The PowerShot A4000 IS Digital Camera (Red) from Canon allows you to see more and capture images from a great distance away for such a small camera. At about 1.0" thick and 2.2" tall, the A4000 still manages to shoot large 16 megapixel resolution images using the 35mm equivalent of a 28 - 224mm telephoto lens. It also employs advanced image stabilization technologies and techniques to ensure your HD videos aren't shaky and your photos aren't blurry. This allows you to capture clearer, truer images without unwanted blur or camera shake.
With its 16 megapixel image sensor this little camera is still able to capture poster-sized images at a maximum 4608 x 3456 resolution. This gives you the flexibility to enlarge or crop any section of your image for printing or sharing online. Digital Image Stabilization ensures those images are as sharp as possible and not blurred due to low lighting, holding the camera away from you, or aiming at a moving subject.
The DIGIC 4 Image Processor powers all of the camera's advanced systems and features--ensuring you get fast, reliable performance with low battery consumption. With it, the camera can have its enhanced picture quality, alongside features like HD video, high-speed continuous shooting, and Face-Detection Self-Timer.
In addition to the speed of shooting, the Optical Image Stabilization and Intelligent IS work in combination to deliver sharper and clearer images to your camera and memory card. Using multiple types of image stabilization, the camera selects the best and most appropriate method to capture your photo or video without distracting camera shake.
The A4000 IS doubles as a high definition camcorder that fits in your pocket with its 720p HD video resolution. Capture more than a snapshot of your memories by recording all of them in outstanding HD quality. With the video capabilities, as well as the dozens of photography features, it is a feature-packed camera that likely takes up same amount of space as your cell phone.

Reviewing the A4000IS as a consumer point-n-shoot, not trying to compare it with a much more expensive DSLR.
Bought this camera for a trip to Patagonia where we'd be hiking and engaging in lots of outdoor activities. I knew I would be unwilling to carry my large DSLR camera all day long for what was essentially a family vacation.
At 4.4 oz. the A4000IS was perfect to drop in my pocket every day and be ready to shoot at a moments notice. The 8x optical zoom, and the optical image stabilization sold me on this particular model and these features worked as advertised allowing me to frame a variety of scenes without a tripod.
As my primary output is either 4x6 prints or web pictures (Facebook), having 16 megapixels means that I can crop extensively on my iPad or computer.
As one would expect, the images were pretty clean and noise free in bright lighting, but considerably noisier in low light. Additionally, if you greatly magnify the images, you will see some chromatic aberration from the lens, but at any reasonable image size, this is not a problem. All in all, the camera exceeded my expectations for image quality for a camera of this price.
Other reviewers have complained about the battery life being short, and therefore I travel with an extra battery, but surprisingly have never had the need to use the 2nd battery.
Due to the small camera size and the large LCD screen, there's not much room for the buttons and thus they're a bit smaller than ideal. I learned to poke at them with a fingernail (I have big hands) and the buttons were fine.
In summary, this is a great camera for the casual shooter who wants flexible optics, high resolution, a camera that's not much bigger than a cellphone, and is willing to live with the tradeoffs in image quality and lighting that is inherent in an inexpensive point-n-shoot. The Canon A4000IS offers a lot of capability for the price and size.

I generall find the Powershot series to be good, reliable cameras and this one is not different. But there were a few small things I don't really like about the design of the camera hardware. The hinged panel to access the battery and SD card was difficult to open. One of the buttons also became stuck in the pushed position, which didn't cause a problem and was easily fixed, but it shouldn't have happened, especially 10 minutes after taking the product out of the box.
The image stabilization and quick response to taking the photos was good, as it usually is with Canon.
I would recommend spending slightly more money to get slightly higher quality.

This is the second one for me. The first one I dropped and broke. The first one worked so well I got another and am very pleased with it as I was with the first. I use it to take pictures @ my church in very low light. What I like about it is it takes very good pictures in low light and I don't get the blurred pictures that I used to get with my other camera. This camera would be good for any type of pictures you won't to take.

I am a semi-pro photographer and use the camera for family gatherings, vacations etc. It is with me at all times.
The resolution and versitility are good and the zoom is very nice. I had a Cannon A2000IS and it was easy to grip and switch modes with the control wheel.
The A4000 IS is difficult to grip and cumbersome to switch modes.

I use this little camera for mundane point and shoot fun like pics of a friend's new car, party shots, insurance claim. It's easy to use and very versatile. Plenty of ways to use manual settings to improve photos in special situations or just leave on automatic and takes good clear sharp fotos and excellent accurate color rendering. Fits in your hand and everything to touch is just right. Long battery life allows lots of shots per charge. Terrific zoom.
Highly recommended, clever, competent, sturdy and reliable. Amazing satisfaction for great value price. The blue body I bought is simply stunning. Good camera for any skill level, any age or gender user. .

I have a larger Canon which I've happily used for about 5 years. I particularly like the fact it has a 10X telephoto lens. Recently my visiting relatives bought a Canon A2300 and I was amazed with the handiness and picture quality. In a review I read it could be improved with image stabilization. I finally settled on the step up to the Power Shor A4000 IS. It is small yet still capable of being held firmly.. It produces really fine photos and has an equal to an 8X optical telephoto lens. I've tried it in closeups and am happy with its ability to shoot decent photos in low light.

At first I wasn't sure about that little camera by Canon even if 16 Mega Pixels sounds good. But this super light Canon for me works well, easy to carry in a pocket as snowboarding or traveling. Photos done during night, day and cloudy days comes out pretty good. I was very suprised when on very cold day at the mountain battery work well, had no problems with it. Canon zoom lens 8x - is just enough. It was a great deal and overall I'm very happy with that almost pocket size camera.

Got this as a gift for my parents after owning a previous generation power shot SD750. This camera is great for those that want to take casual shots. The menus are self explanatory and have on screen "guides" as far as to what each option does. My parents liked the large screen and the compact size. Plus this has a better optical zoom than others in it's class. For [$] bucks. Cant go wrong. Expecting to become the next photographer to have your pictures hosted by sports illustrated and national geographic? Well, this camera wont get you there.
