I have had several tough cameras in the past. My first one was an Olympus when they first came out and it was great back then. It did have a few glitches like the lens shutter and it was slow taking pictures. I had it for a long time and took a lot of underwater pictures with it. It died one day in Aspen in a giant hot springs there. I then bought a Fuji 20 tough camera and did not like it at all. Very Very slow starting up and taking pictures. Most of my pictures were blurry.
I recently got this 820 and man they have improved things. It is fast and takes great pictures. We were in Florida at the beach and it took all I could dish out. I am very hard on things and this camera took it all. They have really improved the performance and the picture quality. I am very pleased. Now I have to see how long it will last. I will check back in December.

The recently released Olympus Tough TG-820 has been a huge disappointment to say the least. I purchased it for a trip that I took to the Caribbean, and I was angered beyond belief when the camera door opened up while I was shooting underwater! I was fly fishing for bonefish on a calm ocean flat in only in two feet of water when this occurred. Luckily the invaluable images on the memory card were saved, but the camera is completely dead. This happened on the first day of my trip, so I was without the ability to shoot underwater photos and video for the remaining 6 days!

This pains me a bit because I've been a huge fan of the Olympus underwater digital cameras from the day the first one was released. I own the original Olympus Stylus 770 (that still works) and has a SOLID closing system for the door. Two friends of mine own the follow-up Olympus Tough camera and have had the same wonderful photography results that I have experienced with the Stylus. They also have never had a problem with the door opening unexpectedly. Unfortunately, this new TG-820 is a weak follow-up to these cameras. The lock has NEVER failed on these previous models, but this new "dual lock" system on the TG-820 is a joke. All you have to do is accidentally brush against it and it unlocks. I have taken amazing photos over the years with the Stylus 770, but I wanted the ability to shoot 1080 HD underwater. The variety of waterproof cameras on the market that shoot HD is endless, but I stayed the course and went with what has been good to my underwater needs in the past. I "upgraded" to the TG-820. Big mistake.

I haven't used this camera yet for underwater photography, so will do an update after my trip to Hawaii this Christmas. So far, I'm happy with it's construction - seems very sturdy, so perfect for hiking and getting wet. My main purpose in buying it was to use it while snorkeling. The instruction booklet that comes with this camera is useless and hard to read. The online guide is confusing and not helpful at all. This will be a trial and error learning process.

Comments about Tough TG-820 iHS Digital Camera (Red):

I purchased the Tough TG-820 IHS Olympus for its potential durability, and it certainly lived up to its name for being a tough camera. The camera was used for my 12 hour 17 mile GORUCK challenge of which it was literally dragged through mud, crushed by feet, submerged in the ocean and I used the camera throughout the entire challenge, in addition; the weather never got above 36 degrees. The memory card is perfect, the pictures came out fine, and the camera works like new. In fact, there is no damage at all. The IQ, is like I said in the subject line, OK at best. However, if you need a camera that can take a beating, this is the camera for you.

Comments about Tough TG-820 iHS Digital Camera (Red):

I work on the Mississippi River, which can cause such high humidity that it will fry a typical "Mom" camera in a matter of minutes. Not so with the Tough Series cameras. The 820 is my daily working camera and lives slung around my neck, day in and day out- taking thousands of photos monthly. I have yet to mechanically destroy or even damage one of these cameras. They seem impervious to dust, humidity and shock. The optical and digital zooms are amazing for the size of the camera. With ASA ratings up to 6400, I get fantastic photos at night. As long as I have just a little light, I can get useable photos in near total darkness. Battery life is excellent. I can usually get by for an 8 hour shift with 1 spare battery in my pocket- which is excellent when you consider that I might take 200 photos before changing batteries.

I bought this camera as a gift for my grand daughter, who is rather careless. Her dad loves it, her mother raves about it and her brother is vaguely jealous. They love the special effects features and say it is easy to use. The best feature is its toughness. They live in the mountains with a dog, three cats, and snow from September to April.....

Comments about Tough TG-820 iHS Digital Camera (Red):

I used this little camera as my go to snapshot camera while hiking in Glacier National Park. I stuck it in my hiking shirt and pulled it out for quick shots or video.
This little camera is great at taking pics and video literally on the fly. The panoramic feature is amazing as well as the HDR feature.
This was a quick to learn camera, and I would recommend this for some who wants to have a camera on hand at all times, it now occupies a permanant place in my purse. I'm not a fan of the camera on my phone.
What I would like to see is a little faster writing to the sd card.
I also wish it has shot RAW

I got this as something to actually carry around while hiking and in town-I have an SLR, and while it takes awesome pictures it is exceptionally cumbersome, to say the least. This camera is great-it takes multiple shots very quickly! I haven't read about any of the settings and it still takes decent pictures most of the time. I strongly suspect it would take good pictures ALL of the time if I actually set it correctly (i.e., lighting adjustments and all that good stuff). A good camera for a good price.

Comments about Tough TG-820 iHS Digital Camera (Red):

Bought this camera before a trip to Lake George. Was considering the Olympus TG-2 and Nikon AW110. These two cameras definitely seemed to be best of the lot based on the research I did but finally switched to the TG-820 based on the pricing.

I used this camera extensively during the Lake George trip both underwater as well as outside. The camera performed exceptionally well. Took great pictures both underwater as well as outside. Was so much fun that my friends also plan to buy this camera now.

                          Positives:
                          1. Great pricing
                          2. Great picture quality (I do own a DSLR as well and you cannot compare it with a DSLR but the picture quality is great compared to point and shoot camera's).
                          3. Takes beautiful pics under water.
                          4. Very easy to use - very simple menu and some cool features. In some of the reviews I read people had mentioned that it is hard to use selection button - but once you get used to it; its very easy to use.
                          5. Love the dedicated video recording button - neat little feature - I dont have to flip through the menu to take a video - just hit the record button.
                          6. Decent battery life. I took aroun 250+ pictures (quite a few using the flash) plus video's and the battery still had juice left. So should work out great for most families taking pictures during a trip.
                          7. Great macro features - focuses in distances as less as 1 cm. Awesome!

                          Negatives:
                          1. Does not have GPS. I really dont care about this feature much though - because the GPS typically drains the battery - so even if you have it you wouldnt want to use it.
                          2. Does not have wifi - again dont care for this too much - because this camera is compatible with eyefi card so you can easily pick up one of those cards and you would have wifi.
                          3. Not very good with low light (Note the flash is great but if you are taking pics in low light w/o flash then the pics dont come out too good).

Now - as I said I was initially considering the AW110 and TG-2 - so here are some notes comparing the TG-820 to the AW110 and TG-2.

The TG-820 is pretty much comparable to the AW110 in almost all aspects. The AW110 has a bit better picture quality as well as has GPS and Wifi. Again I dont really care for GPS and Wifi and the pictures I got with the TG-820 were really good so I dont think there is much between the AW110 and TG-820.

The TG-2 is definitely better. It has an f2 lens, a CMOS sensor and also has a wider angle lens. These in my opinion are definitely great features. As such you would get much better low light pics and the wider angle is a plus too. I think the TG-2 definitely scores over the TG-820 because of the better lens and sensor but it is nearly double the price.

So bottom line - if you are okay to spend the money go with the TG-2 else the TG-820 is a great camera - you will definitely enjoy it !

Finally - if you are buying this camera dont forget to get a floating camera strap :-)

I wanted to replace my Olympus Stylus 850 after 7 years of trusty service. It operated perfectly underwater in Hawaii, the Caribbean and Atlantic Ocean as well as the neighborhood pool above and below the water. I didn't want to spend a lot on the Olympus higher end line, so when I found this it was love at first sight. The price was right and it was a big upgrade from my 7 year old camera. Low light in a museum without flash was amazing. Wedding photos were perfect! I can't say enough great things about this camera.

Purchased this camera to replace a point and shoot that was ruined by water damage. Love this camera. Easy to use, functions and buttons are in logical location. Would recommend this camera for those of us who are still wanting freedom from camera phone.

Comments about Tough TG-820 iHS Digital Camera (Silver):

I bought the TG-820 for snorkel trips I had planned. I selected this camera because of the features and the price. Not only did it take excellent underwater pictures. Which was the main reason I bought it. But I found myself grabbing it instead of my "main" camera. The picture quality and settings are great. The fact that it is "tough" is a plus on vacatons. I didn't have to worry about sand or splashes. Just drop it in a pack or bag and you don't have to worry about it. A very good sturdy camera for outdoor activities.
