This redesigned EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM Lens from Canon ups the ante for optical performance for a professional standard zoom lens. It has one Super UD lens element and two UD lens elements that minimize chromatic aberrations in the periphery at wide-angle, as well as reducing color blurring around the edges of the subject. In addition, two types of aspherical lenses are combined to help reduce spherical aberration over the entire image area, as well as through the full zoom range. Optimized lens coatings help ensure exceptional color balance while minimizing ghosting.

A ring-type USM and high-speed CPU with optimized AF algorithms ensure silent, fast autofocusing. The lens is constructed with improved dust sealing and water resistance, while fluorine coatings on the front and rear lens reduce fingerprints and smearing. A circular 9-blade diaphragm gives beautiful, soft backgrounds. A zoom lock lever locks the zoom position at the wide end for safe transporting while attached to an EOS DSLR camera over the shoulder.

Large aperture L-Series standard zoom lens that combines high image quality and enhanced durability. Constant f/2.8 maximum aperture for effective imaging in low light and shallow depth of field.
New optical design utilizes one Super UD lens element and two UD lens elements to minimize chromatic aberration in the outer area at wide-angle; as well as eliminates color blurring around the edges of the subject, for images with high resolution and contrast.
Combines two types of aspherical elements to reduce spherical aberration, and achieve high image quality across the entire screen area and throughout the full zoom range.
Highly resistant to dust and water, enabling shooting even in harsh and rigorous conditions.
Nine-blade circular diaphragm delivers beautiful, soft backgrounds.
Ring USM, high-speed CPU, and optimized AF algorithms for fast autofocusing.
Manual focus override in One Shot AF mode allows precise manual focus even in AF mode.
Optimized lens coatings ensure exceptional color balance while minimizing ghosting.
Fluorine coating on front and rear lens surfaces reduces smears and fingerprints.
Zoom lock lever locks the zoom position at the wide end for safe transporting.

This has become my most used lens. Great for portraits, great for landscaping, even took it to the zoo and shot some fantastic photos. Crops at 100 percent look great with this lens. This lens is about as heavy as the 24-105 but much sharper. Outstanding in low light and razor sharp. The great thing about this lens, when traveling my backpack weighs a lot less. The only down side to this lens is the price. Price along will keep it out of reach of many folks. Don't forget, a great camera like the Canon 5D Mark III, requires good glass if you want your photographs to stand apart from the average photo. If you want to take snapshots, use your phone. If you want to take outstanding photographs that will be praised, save your money and get this lens.

I am a wedding photographer and pre-ordered this lens with a specific need; I wanted a wide lens that had the equivalent quality and sharpness that my 70-200 IS II produces. After months of staring at the amazing MTF charts & waiting for the lens to be available, I was under the impression that this lens was the "messiah" & that IF it produced images equally as breathtaking as my 70-200 IS II, then it would be worth every penny. (You'll have to pardon my fixation with the Canon 70-200 2.8 IS II; it is the best lens I have ever owned. If I was able to shoot an entire wedding with it, I WOULD. If you don't own it, I highly recommend purchasing one.) So far I've shot 2 weddings with the 24-70 II & have come to the conclusion that it is a GREAT lens. Great- NOT spectacular. It has fast & accurate focus, bokeh is beautiful, it feels well made & heavy, but it did not give me the "quality" that I was personally looking for. There is nothing wrong with this lens. The only negative things I could say about it is 1) the lack of protection from the redesigned hood and 2) price. At the full, introductory price, I see no reason to rush and buy one. If you can wait, THEN WAIT. If you have a perfectly working 24-70 mark 1, THEN WAIT. For the money, I had high expectations. Again, this lens is great, but was not impressive enough for me to keep (based on picture quality vs price). I previously owned the original 24-70, and do not notice a vast difference between them. My needs may be very different than yours; that's why I tried to describe mine specifically. I plan to return the 24-70 II and replace it with the Canon 24mm 1.4 II. I recently had the opportunity to shoot a wedding with the 24mm 1.4 & was very impressed with it; but I already had the 24-70 II on pre-order. I plan to "possibly" purchase the 24-70 II in 1-2 years, when the price equates the quality it produces.

Comments about Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM Lens:

I've been a Canon user for 40 years and this is by far the most versatile Canon lens I've ever owned and I've owned dozens...! Let me start by saying this is my second lens of this type. My first was the 28-70mm f/2.8L USM which made me over seven hundred and fifty thousand dollars. When I sold it the USM mechanism needed fixing however it could be manually focused and still produced great photographs.

This lens came about after having bought a new 1DX with a 24-105mm f/4L lens. It was the first non f/2.8 lens I ever owned and I quickly found that my montra of always owning the BEST was true. Trying to save a few bucks by pairing the 1DX with a sub-par f/4 lens was so incredibly noticeable that I got rid of the 24-105mm f/4L QUICK and purchased this newer version of my old lens. The difference is Night and Day!! Let's say that the f/4 is great for those that believe they are my competition but for me only the BEST will do.

I've always believed that if I own the best I will get the best clients and for the past 24+yrs I haven't been wrong. For others that believe they can't afford the BEST let me say this to you, save your money, work a little extra and buy the BEST! You can't afford NOT to own the Best!! You'll never go wrong with owning only the Best. Your investment will come back a hundred fold, believe me when I say that about this lens. I sold my old 28-70 f/2.8 for more than half the price I paid for it and it needed to be fixed!! You'll never see that kind of return on a used lesser quality lens.

To stay true to my Montra of owning and using the best and being the best I can be for my clients I am now in the process of upgrading back to Medium format(digital). After seeing the difference in quality and being able to afford the better equipment unlike the other photographers in my area I will be once again adding medium format to my business. It is my way of leading and staying ahead of those that wish to try and compete with me.

It may sound as though I'm a bit conceited however for the Pro in my position reading this it is an easily understood frame of mind.....

I use this lens for portrait work, newborns and children. This lens is fast, sharp, & the color is amazing. The detail it picks up is extraordinary. I compared side by side with my favorite prime lens, and this lens blew it out of the water.

Comments about Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM Lens:

I Haven't had enough time yet to use this lens hyet. However, initial shots I've taken so far with this lens are fenomenal!
I have other 'L' lenses such as 16-35mm f4L IS, the 70-200mm f2.8L IS II and the 100mm f2.8L IS that are anazingly sharp, contrasty and excellent color rendition. I'd never been too happy with the previous 24-70mm f2.8L, but there is a steep price difference so I had to save some money. I've been waiting in reality a couple of years until now that I pulled the trigger and purchase this gem.
IQ and sharpness is on par with my other 'L' lenses throughout the whole focal range and picture frame.
Its AF is faster than my old Canon 24-70/2.8L, bokeh is better and balance better on my 5D3. I also like the lock mechanism at 24mm FL to prevent extension when place downwards
This lens it's a killer and if you plan to buy, just do it. You'll never regret it, it is money well worth invested.

Comments about Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM Lens:

This was one of three lenses I picked up when I moved to the 5D Mk III. So far, I've been really happy with this lens. It has worked well on my back up camera when shooting cycling events. My primary lens is the 70-200 f/2.8L IS II USM, and handles the need to shoot something shorter than 70 very well. Focus is pin point sharp, and the colors come through great. Mechanicals are all working very smoothly inside. So far, it has been a great lens that I look forward to using for years.

I like the lock that keeps the lens from protruding when not being used. I thought it would be all metal but the plastic seems sturdy. I guess the weight savings are worth it...

This is an amazing lens and is the lens I use most of the time. It's a great lens for many situations. It's extremely well made as you'd expect of an "L" lens and works really well even on my Canon 70D (crop sensor) body. I love it.

Comments about Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM Lens:

I was watching this lens for a long time and the only thing holding me back was the price and lack of i,age stabilization. Given the rebate offered by Canon and my taking a chance, I just purchased this lens and have been very excited about photography ever since! I have watched a lot of user reviews and I do believe this lens will not be the best if you are shooting video, given the lack of IS (unless you are shooting with a tripod), but surprising, I am getting sweet handheld shots, even though I am sure I don't have the steadiest hands in the world! The color rendition on this lens is stunning and I encourGe those looking for this focal length to strongly consider this lens. I truly am excited bout photography again and look forward to growing with this lens.

Having just upgraded from my Canon 18-200mm crop kit lens, it was painful to invest in both this lens and a 70-200 f2.8 to get roughly the same range. I thought my 70-200 would get a lot more action than this one, but a couple of recent weddings have proved me wrong, as the majority of my photos came using this lens.I love the focus accuracy, its sharpness, and the 2.8 for low-light conditions. I see now why this is the bread and butter of many wedding and event photographers. A great buy!

Yes, this is the most expensive lens I have purchased in the past ten+ years!!But Wow, what a great lens. In my opinion, it is worth every cent. Very solid Pro feel to it, ightening fast focus and tack sharp image quality. It is always on my camera. I can't image a better lens for life style, family and child photography. Great in low light as well.

I have only had this lens for a little over 2 weeks and I have already made it an integral part of my shooting repertoire.I used it on Thanksgiving to get some great family shots, & I was able to capture more than ever before with my 5D Mk III body. I have also already used it for some landscapes on a hillside for a commercial shoot, and its wide angles when combined with a full frame body really open up the possibilities. Also when combined with a good body, its tonal range and low light performance are incredible. Motor is nice and quiet. There's no Image Stabilization and while that knitting worried me, I haven't noticed at all. Overall, I'm very impressed.

Sold my original 24-70 to upgrade to the II model. Love the new design. Lighter weight. The focus and zoom rings are larger. The lens hood is smaller. I do not think that the image quality is that much better to justify trading in your old lens. I shoot sports and I do believe this lens focuses a little faster.
