This redesigned EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM Lens from Canon ups the ante for optical performance for a professional standard zoom lens. It has one Super UD lens element and two UD lens elements that minimize chromatic aberrations in the periphery at wide-angle, as well as reducing color blurring around the edges of the subject. In addition, two types of aspherical lenses are combined to help reduce spherical aberration over the entire image area, as well as through the full zoom range. Optimized lens coatings help ensure exceptional color balance while minimizing ghosting.

A ring-type USM and high-speed CPU with optimized AF algorithms ensure silent, fast autofocusing. The lens is constructed with improved dust sealing and water resistance, while fluorine coatings on the front and rear lens reduce fingerprints and smearing. A circular 9-blade diaphragm gives beautiful, soft backgrounds. A zoom lock lever locks the zoom position at the wide end for safe transporting while attached to an EOS DSLR camera over the shoulder.

Large aperture L-Series standard zoom lens that combines high image quality and enhanced durability. Constant f/2.8 maximum aperture for effective imaging in low light and shallow depth of field.
New optical design utilizes one Super UD lens element and two UD lens elements to minimize chromatic aberration in the outer area at wide-angle; as well as eliminates color blurring around the edges of the subject, for images with high resolution and contrast.
Combines two types of aspherical elements to reduce spherical aberration, and achieve high image quality across the entire screen area and throughout the full zoom range.

Haven't had a lot of time yet to use this lens yet. However, initial shots I've taken so far with this lens does NOT disappoint at all! I have the Zeiss 35 F/1.4 Distagon prime which is no slouch when it comes to 35mm. I also have the 16-35mm Canon ii. I've never been too happy with the 16-35 ii in terms of IQ (although it will "hit" sometimes.) ... I've always found myself falling back on the Zeiss 35mm, but there is a problem with that lens--manual focus only. So forget about action shots. The Zeiss 35mm F/1.4 beats Canon's prime 35mm hands down, so this is why I never got the Canon 35mm prime. I've been waiting in reality a couple of years for a solution at the mid-range zoom, because I also was not at fan of the original 24-70mm lens.

I have great news. This lens at least to my eye is as sharp as the Zeiss 35mm prime F1/1.4, and that's saying a lot! Others are reporting at 24mm, it's the sharpest of them all including canon's prime. Pretty much from 24-50 you are looking at stellar results, which is perfect. At 70mm, folks are reporting some loss of sharpness in the corners. To that I say, there are always compromises, and I would much have it sharp corner to corner at the wider focal. (Think about it, you are probably doing portrait at 70mm, so a little less sharp in corners is not a deal breaker!)

I'll write more when I have some more time to really put this lens through its paces. But I did attach one shot I got already with the lens (Canon 5d Mark iii) for which I am very happy with (and impossible with the Zeiss manual focus)

2 Thumbs up! ... wish it had IS like everyone else is whining about... BUT this lens I don't think should be underestimated.... it's a killer!

I am a wedding photographer and pre-ordered this lens with a specific need; I wanted a wide lens that had the equivalent quality and sharpness that my 70-200 IS II produces. After months of staring at the amazing MTF charts & waiting for the lens to be available, I was under the impression that this lens was the "messiah" & that IF it produced images equally as breathtaking as my 70-200 IS II, then it would be worth every penny. (You'll have to pardon my fixation with the Canon 70-200 2.8 IS II; it is the best lens I have ever owned. If I was able to shoot an entire wedding with it, I WOULD. If you don't own it, I highly recommend purchasing one.) So far I've shot 2 weddings with the 24-70 II & have come to the conclusion that it is a GREAT lens. Great- NOT spectacular. It has fast & accurate focus, bokeh is beautiful, it feels well made & heavy, but it did not give me the "quality" that I was personally looking for. There is nothing wrong with this lens. The only negative things I could say about it is 1) the lack of protection from the redesigned hood and 2) price. At the full, introductory price, I see no reason to rush and buy one. If you can wait, THEN WAIT. If you have a perfectly working 24-70 mark 1, THEN WAIT. For the money, I had high expectations. Again, this lens is great, but was not impressive enough for me to keep (based on picture quality vs price). I previously owned the original 24-70, and do not notice a vast difference between them. My needs may be very different than yours; that's why I tried to describe mine specifically. I plan to return the 24-70 II and replace it with the Canon 24mm 1.4 II. I recently had the opportunity to shoot a wedding with the 24mm 1.4 & was very impressed with it; but I already had the 24-70 II on pre-order. I plan to "possibly" purchase the 24-70 II in 1-2 years, when the price equates the quality it produces.

Comments about Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM Lens:

I have used Version I of this lens for a decade, and always appreciated its image quality, so much so that I was dubious version II could be significantly better. The detailed comparative review at http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Canon-EF-24-70mm-f-2.8-L-II-USM-Lens-Review.aspx, particularly the MTF chart comparison, and http://www.lensrentals.com/blog/2012/09/canon-24-70-f2-8-ii-resolution-tests, pushed me to upgrade. From the first image, clarity, color and contrast seemed markedly improved.

Comments about Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM Lens:

I read several reviews about this lens, all gave outstanding remarks. I have lens mounted on my Canon 5D Mark III and the results are stunning. The sharpness of the lens is only equaled by my EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM lens. The 24-70 is a super fast and super sharp exciting lens. The detail in photos is fantastic. Even my black fur Pug who never photographs well looks like she just won Westminster Dog Show. A bonus I did not expect was the quality of the jpeg files. I always use the raw file for post edit, but the jpegs in many cases were near perfect in color and overall appearance. Excellent for social media as is. This lens has become my favorite for versatility and speed. The zoom range is really nice as well. This lens will not disappoint any level of photographer.

Comments about Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM Lens:

I use this lens for in a variety of ways. I use it for all kinds of events (Weddings, parties, engagement shoots, gallery openings, performances, etc.) and to shoot short videos. In all of the situations I have used the lens, it has performed superbly. I love how fast it focuses and the sharp images it produces. For video, it performs just as well. I love the lock feature to keep it from sliding out when you are walking around with it attached to the camera.

The only thing I would like to have as an improvement is to have a better lens hood to prevent lens flairs. The one that comes with the lens is too small for certain situations.

This is possibly one of the most versatile and beautiful lenses in my bag. A go-to lens that you won't regret investing in!

I've shot with the Version 1, and love how much sharper and lighter this lens is. Also, and this is minor, zooming from wide to telephoto actually pushes the elements apart; unlike Version 1. On V1, what drove me crazy was that the elements actually compressed when the focal length was at 70mm.

I've had this lens now for two weeks and taken it on one large shoot. I have no idea how I got along without it for this long. I use it mainly for outdoor portrait style photography. The clarity is unbelievable. Eyes are crystal clear even from a distance. Depth of field is good and the background drops out of focus perfectly. Believe me, you need this lens!

Comments about Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM Lens:

I have been shooting with prime lenses, but when I read the reviews of this lens I had to give it a shot.

                - Sharpness is great, I could be happier.
                - Distortion is minimal (correctable)
                - F2.8 isn't as fast as my 24mm f1.4L II, but then again I was willing to give that up for the range.
                - I wasn't to thrilled about 82mm Filter.
                - Lock is a neat option, but don't really see the need (yet?)

I would have given it 4.5 Stars, but could figure out how to minus the 1/2 Start. 1/2 deduction due to the 82mm filter.

If this lens cost half as much as it does, I would have given it 5 stars. That pretty much sums up this lens in a nutshell. It's a good lens, but it isn't as sharp as say the 100mm f/2.8 Macro. You won't confuse this with a bargain/economy lens for sure, just don't necessarily expect to be blown away.

The only negative is the price (I'd have given it 5 stars if it was more reasonbly priced). This is my second copy of this lens. The first one was stolen, which made me ralize just how much I relied on it. You'd expect a lens at this price to focus fast, be sharp at all focal lengths and apertures, so it goes without saying, this lens excels on all of those points. While it may be missing IS, I didn't miss it on the first copy I owned, and doubt I'll miss it on this one. Image quality is superb, which is what matters most to me.

Comments about Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM Lens:

I am a hobbyist that recently upgraded to 5D MkIII from Canon 7D w/ EF-S 17-55mm f2.8, so I thought i'd save a nickel and get the Tamron 24-70MM f/2.8 but when I got it on the camera it had really bad vignetting. I was used to the previous set up that had almost no vignetting. So back to the brick & mortar store it went. Got my refund and ordered this lens from B&H. Usual fast delivery! After two days of test shots I am convinced that this lens far and away out performs the Tamron (at least for someone with my skill set). I believe that great pros can make a coke bottle work as a lens but amateurs need a great piece of glass like this lens to help us compensate. The first test I did was directly at the sun on a very bright sunny day and man what a difference over my old setup. I have attached that picture (Un-edited except for conversion to jpeg). Canon got this right and this lens makes a great combo with the 70-200mm f2.8 IS II. The UV filter seems quite good in this deal but I was not overly impressed with the C-PL filter with first test shots.

My go to lens for many tasks. I use it for aerial photography and landscape photography. Lately, I've set aside my 50mm and 135mm primes and used this one for many portrait shots. I can't see how it could be any sharper.

I have been using this product on my EOS 6D. The lens is amazing. great photos. Some of the photos are softer than expected. Not sure yet if it is the lens or me (most likely me since i am new to photography).

The only reason I gave it 4 stars is because of the price. I wish the price was a bit more reasonable.

I thought about this lens a long time before I bought it. I waited for a sale and rebate. Still expensive but worth it. I wanted this lens to compliment the 70-200. It did not disappoint.

It is light enough to walk around with. I like the zoom lock. Used with my 6d, it is great!!

I use the 24-70 as a non-specialty lens for weddings mostly. Super lens in low light, like when the DJ turns the lights low during the reception. Also use when the 85 f1.2 isn't handy. So I open up the aperture and zoom to 70 as a good stand in. Works well as a stand in for my macro lens as well.
