This redesigned EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM Lens from Canon ups the ante for optical performance for a professional standard zoom lens. It has one Super UD lens element and two UD lens elements that minimize chromatic aberrations in the periphery at wide-angle, as well as reducing color blurring around the edges of the subject. In addition, two types of aspherical lenses are combined to help reduce spherical aberration over the entire image area, as well as through the full zoom range. Optimized lens coatings help ensure exceptional color balance while minimizing ghosting.

A ring-type USM and high-speed CPU with optimized AF algorithms ensure silent, fast autofocusing. The lens is constructed with improved dust sealing and water resistance, while fluorine coatings on the front and rear lens reduce fingerprints and smearing. A circular 9-blade diaphragm gives beautiful, soft backgrounds. A zoom lock lever locks the zoom position at the wide end for safe transporting while attached to an EOS DSLR camera over the shoulder.

Large aperture L-Series standard zoom lens that combines high image quality and enhanced durability. Constant f/2.8 maximum aperture for effective imaging in low light and shallow depth of field.
New optical design utilizes one Super UD lens element and two UD lens elements to minimize chromatic aberration in the outer area at wide-angle; as well as eliminates color blurring around the edges of the subject, for images with high resolution and contrast.
Combines two types of aspherical elements to reduce spherical aberration, and achieve high image quality across the entire screen area and throughout the full zoom range.
Highly resistant to dust and water, enabling shooting even in harsh and rigorous conditions.
Nine-blade circular diaphragm delivers beautiful, soft backgrounds.
Ring USM, high-speed CPU, and optimized AF algorithms for fast autofocusing.

Haven't had a lot of time yet to use this lens yet. However, initial shots I've taken so far with this lens does NOT disappoint at all! I have the Zeiss 35 F/1.4 Distagon prime which is no slouch when it comes to 35mm. I also have the 16-35mm Canon ii. I've never been too happy with the 16-35 ii in terms of IQ (although it will "hit" sometimes.) ... I've always found myself falling back on the Zeiss 35mm, but there is a problem with that lens--manual focus only. So forget about action shots. The Zeiss 35mm F/1.4 beats Canon's prime 35mm hands down, so this is why I never got the Canon 35mm prime. I've been waiting in reality a couple of years for a solution at the mid-range zoom, because I also was not at fan of the original 24-70mm lens.

I have great news. This lens at least to my eye is as sharp as the Zeiss 35mm prime F1/1.4, and that's saying a lot! Others are reporting at 24mm, it's the sharpest of them all including canon's prime. Pretty much from 24-50 you are looking at stellar results, which is perfect. At 70mm, folks are reporting some loss of sharpness in the corners. To that I say, there are always compromises, and I would much have it sharp corner to corner at the wider focal. (Think about it, you are probably doing portrait at 70mm, so a little less sharp in corners is not a deal breaker!)

I'll write more when I have some more time to really put this lens through its paces. But I did attach one shot I got already with the lens (Canon 5d Mark iii) for which I am very happy with (and impossible with the Zeiss manual focus)

2 Thumbs up! ... wish it had IS like everyone else is whining about... BUT this lens I don't think should be underestimated.... it's a killer!

I am a wedding photographer and pre-ordered this lens with a specific need; I wanted a wide lens that had the equivalent quality and sharpness that my 70-200 IS II produces. After months of staring at the amazing MTF charts & waiting for the lens to be available, I was under the impression that this lens was the "messiah" & that IF it produced images equally as breathtaking as my 70-200 IS II, then it would be worth every penny. (You'll have to pardon my fixation with the Canon 70-200 2.8 IS II; it is the best lens I have ever owned. If I was able to shoot an entire wedding with it, I WOULD. If you don't own it, I highly recommend purchasing one.) So far I've shot 2 weddings with the 24-70 II & have come to the conclusion that it is a GREAT lens. Great- NOT spectacular. It has fast & accurate focus, bokeh is beautiful, it feels well made & heavy, but it did not give me the "quality" that I was personally looking for. There is nothing wrong with this lens. The only negative things I could say about it is 1) the lack of protection from the redesigned hood and 2) price. At the full, introductory price, I see no reason to rush and buy one. If you can wait, THEN WAIT. If you have a perfectly working 24-70 mark 1, THEN WAIT. For the money, I had high expectations. Again, this lens is great, but was not impressive enough for me to keep (based on picture quality vs price). I previously owned the original 24-70, and do not notice a vast difference between them. My needs may be very different than yours; that's why I tried to describe mine specifically. I plan to return the 24-70 II and replace it with the Canon 24mm 1.4 II. I recently had the opportunity to shoot a wedding with the 24mm 1.4 & was very impressed with it; but I already had the 24-70 II on pre-order. I plan to "possibly" purchase the 24-70 II in 1-2 years, when the price equates the quality it produces.

Comments about Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM Lens:

I was hesitant with upgrading from my older 24-70 2.8L lens to the newer version because the price made me gag! This lens consistently delivers in low-light settings without a hiccup. If you have a 5D MK iii, do yourself a favor and utilize all 61 focus points. Bite the bullet ... you'll never look back.

Saved up quite a while to move up to this lens. Now I can more easily obtained a blurred background and low light photos. It is heavy. As I try to move up to the next level I no longer will have the lingering worry or ready excuse that it is the lens which is limiting.

Comments about Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM Lens:

The first zoom I've ever owned that I actually like using.I'm mainly a prime shooter. But I hqve an 18 month old child. Outdoors I'm fine with primes, but was just finding it too hard going keeping up with her indoors. It's hard to get framing right -- there's always furnature in the way meaning you can't back up or whatever, and with wide angle shots, a couple of steps makes all the difference so when she doesn't stay still it's a nightmare.I bought the 24-105, which went straight back, and carried on struggling with my 35 f1.4. Finally cracked an bought this and so glad I did. The shots look like prime lens shots -- the colour and contrast and just great. It's VERY sharp, even at f2.8. Not quite 85L @ f2.8 or 135L @ 2.8 sharp, but really not far off. This is now my general go-to lens for anything indoors, or for family outings when I don't know what'll be coming along. No it can't produce the amazing shallow DoF kind of shots that just make people go "WOW" like my 85L or 135L - it's too wide and slow, but it lets me capture a lot more memories in beautiful detail with punchy colour and contrast. just what I needed. the 35 f1.4 is going on [@]AF is very fast too. It's also a very pleasant weight to carry (but I'm used to heavy lenses)Bokeh is pretty reasonable, tough you need to get very close to get a lot of it obviously.

Comments about Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM Lens:

I bought this lens to replace my trusty 28-70 2.8 that I've had for many, many years. While I do think that the new 24-70 2.8 II lens is NOT as well built as the older models that it replaced I KNOW that this lens is head and shoulders better as far as IQ goes. It is without a doubt the best IQ of any of the 13 EF lenses that I have! The first assignment that I shot with this lens was in an elementary school gym. The light was as dark and flat as any that I've been in. I figured that it would tax the camera and lens to shoot the job and get good quality images. Boy was I wrong! This lens has the most "snap" to it of any of the lenses that I own or any that I have ever used. The quality of the images from color to contrast is simply outstanding! While I do think that the lens is way overpriced I do believe that you get an outstanding lens for the money! I also believe that unless you are a pro you probably could get by without spending this much money on a lens. It is not my "go to" lens but could be over time. I haven't had it long enough to really put it to an extreme test but so far it has responded well. I would highly recommend this lens to anyone who needs the highest quality images and who doesn't mind spending the extra money. Oh and for the record the only thing that I don't like about the lens is the cheap lens hood! I think Canon must have designed the hood as an afterthought!

Comments about Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM Lens:

I recently purchased this lens as part of an effort toward converting to pro-level, full frame lenses and body during the coming year. I was looking for fast, versatile, quality glass that will become my "go to" lenses for a multitude of assignments. This lens does not disappoint. At f/2.8, it offers excellent bokeh, and allows me to use noticeably faster shutter speeds, and lower ISO's, than my kit lens. Stopped down, the images are even more impressive, with excellent contrast and vibrant colors throughout the entire zoom and f-stop range. Focus is fast, quiet, and accurate. While it is not the smallest, lightest, or cheapest lens, the build quality is excellent and everything you expect from high-end Canon "L" glass. When it comes to this lens, you definitely get whay you pay for.

Comments about Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM Lens:

I'll first start my review by noting that I got a bad copy of the lens with a squeaky zoom ring, but the lens was very sharp and with nice bokeh. Goof focal length range, and not as heavy as I thought.

The one issue I did see with the lens is that it in the very corner at 24mm there is cut-off when used with a lee holder with one slot and a very slim heliopan polarizer.

Comments about Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM Lens:

I got this lens after trying out the Tamron 24-70 and 70-200 f2.8 lens. However after disappointments with communication errors and focus performance I desided to bit the bullet and get this lens instead. I wish I made this my first choice, focusing is notisible faster even for an amateur like me making it easier to capture those perfect shots. Paired with my canon 6D body the images produced are amazing.

Comments about Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM Lens:

I wanted to replace my 24-105mm for my 5DMIII. I tried the tamron version first and while the quality was also top notch, it had quite a few issues (focusing and strange aperture problems) I never imagned I'd own the Canon 24-70mm due to the insanely high price, but after the differnece in quality I saw with the Tamron, I was more confident that Canon would be better. I still cringed at the price tag though. But now that I own it I wish I bought it last year, what an INCREDIBLE lens. The focusing is fast, even at F/2.8 I can shoot with confidence and get tack sharp images, even with motion. Its extremely consistent also. unlike the tamron, I have yet to get a soft or out of focus image. It works amazing with my 5DMIII. It totally blows my 24-105 away, I'll never be able to use that lens again. I'm spoiled now.

Comments about Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM Lens:

Hello all! I am a filmmaker and Photographer, it is very important to me to have gear that works and delivers quality all the time. I've owned a lot of Canon EF series L lenses and non-L, as well as some Carl Zeiss glass. I sold my 24mm L prime to get this guy. I am now an owner of a C100 and I do many run and gun style shoots so this to me was a good move. The fact that the C100 is a video camera and it's ergonomics are great, it still is not a DSLR and taking off the lens and putting on another one is not as simple as with a DSLR. The menu says its better for it to be off and then change lenses. Now I also shoot photography for weddings, using a mk2 and a mk3. I already had the 70-200mm L mk1 and adding this to my arsenal has made my work a lot better. Again, weddings is something you have to catch the moment and sometimes they happen within seconds of each other. I have some primes that I have for portraits or more controlled environments, but this guy along with a 70-200 gives me my bread and butter and my money shots. It's sharp, pretty fast, and it's nicer looking than the mk1. I give it two thumbs up!
