The Kinect for Windows Sensor (For Developers Only) from Microsoft is not the same as the motion-tracking, voice-activated gaming controller for the Xbox 360, but it's a tool for developers to use when creating new motion-tracking applications for Windows computers. While you won't be able to play your favorite Kinect games or connect to the Xbox 360, the Kinect for Windows sensor can be used with the Kinect for Windows Commercial Software Development Kit (SDK).
Connecting to a computer running Windows 7 or Windows Embedded Standard 7 via a USB port, the Kinect for Windows allows a variety of different input methods for the computers, such as gestures, voice activation and more. You can connect up to four Kinect for Windows when using them in conjunction with Kinect for Windows Commercial SDK.
Note! The Kinect for Windows sensor is intended to be used with the Kinect for Windows Commercial Software Development Kit, which is only licensed to developers and not sold. This product is not for use with the Xbox 360 video game entertainment system

- Near Mode enables the camera to see objects as close as 40 centimeters in front of the device without losing accuracy or precision, with graceful degradation out to 3 meters
- USB Harmony
- With a shortened USB cable and a smaller dongle, the Kinect for Windows sensor ensures reliability across a broad range of computers and improves coexistence with other USB peripherals
- Support and Software Updates
- The Kinect for Windows sensor includes a one-year warranty, support and access to software updates for both speech and human tracking
Kinect for Windows Commercial Software Development Kit (SDK)
- For Developers Only
- The Kinect for Windows sensor is intended to be used with the Kinect for Windows Commercial Software Development Kit, which is only licensed to developers and not sold. This product is not for use with the Xbox 360 video game entertainment system
- Commercial Ready
- The installer makes it easy to install Kinect for Windows runtime and driver components for end-user deployments
- Raw Sensor Streams
- The depth sensor can see objects as close as 40 centimeters and also communicates more information about depth values outside the range than was previously available. There is also improved synchronization between color and depth, mapping depth to color and a full frame API
- Skeletal Tracking
- The Kinect for Windows sensor provides more accuracy and skeletal tracking now enables control over which user is being tracked by the sensor
- Advanced Speech and Audio Capabilities
- The latest Microsoft Speech components and an updated English Language Pack allow for improved language recognition accuracy. In addition, the appropriate runtime components are now automatically installed with the runtime installer
- API Improvements
- The Kinect for Windows sensor enhances consistency and ease of development. New developers should have a much easier time learning how to develop with Kinect for Windows and all developers will be more productive

I bought this to add to my Visual and Interactive art, and it works even better than I'd hoped. Skeleton tracking is fast, and there's virtually no lag on the color or the depth stream; setup was also extremely fast and easy. The one thing about it that I wish were different is the cord: it's a little short for what I use it for, however this is a very small issue.

Bought this to use with iClone5 and I have been having so much fun!! It's not perfect but once you get the hang of it it's a great time.
