Product Highlights
  • 5 Mega Pixel Color Sensor
  • Live Video; View & Capture
  • Imaging Software
  • Aluminum 1.25" Adapter Barrel
  • IR-cut Optical Window

The NexImage 5 Solar System Imager (5MP) from Celestron is a 5 megapixel color sensor that not only allows you to capture still images of your celestial subjects on a computer but also boasts the ability to view and capture live video as well. A small pixel size provides sub arc-second planetary detail with most telescopes and the Micron DigitalClarity technology reduces image noise levels. The included software automatically filters out video frames that have been the most affected by poor atmospheric seeing and leaves only the sharpest, clearest frames to be stacked and aligned into one high quality image. The software also delivers the ability to manually change the gain, contrast, exposure time, frame rate and color saturation of the camera through the computer. It has a machined aluminum 1.25" adapter barrel that accepts standard 1.25" eyepiece filters. The camera body has integrated C-threads affording direct threaded connection to the telescope. The optical window has been IR-cut for greater precision and there is a selectable "region of interest" for sub-framing. The NexImage 5 has 2x2 and 4x4 binning capability, progressive scanning and includes a high speed USB 2.0 cable.

      Very good camera!

      By Juan MN

Comments about Celestron NexImage 5 Solar System Imager (5MP):

I would recommend this camera because is fairly cheap and the quality of its images are amazing even though I just learning how to use the software that came with it. I am giving it 4 stars because I can't compare it with any other. This is my first one and I am very happy even that here in Minnesota there are not many good nights to enjoy my telescope.

Comments about Celestron NexImage 5 Solar System Imager (5MP):

First night out I got good images of the Moon and Saturn after processing with Registax.Needs far better documentation - there is virtually nothing included. One has to scour the net for tutorials to go beyond the defaults. Can be used as a quide scope for deep space time exposures. Plan on using it with my Nikon DSLR.

Comments about Celestron NexImage 5 Solar System Imager (5MP):

It is very easy to use and get very good quality images better than some planetary images found in old textbooks taken at observatories.
YouTube has plenty of tutorials from the basic setup through the final image processing. Your results will depend on the quality, size, and experience with your telescope and the atmosphere.
I recommend using this on a scope with a tracking equatorial mount, not a Dob. An electronic focuser is also a plus.Owning PhotoShop is recommended, without it you will be limited to only the features of Registax (included).
This is a great value and it's not just for beginners. I use mine with a 12" SCT and have been imaging for over 30 years.

Comments about Celestron NexImage 5 Solar System Imager (5MP):

Initially I thought it was not working, only black screen when looking at the moon. I called Celestron, they told me that for my telescope (NexStar 5se) the magnification was 300X. This of course makes focussing difficult, still the full moon is a big target. The manual says to connect the camera to the back of the telescope. When I used the diagonal I was able to get a picture of the moon (not good due to the enlargement) and later of Saturn. Made movie of Saturn and later picture. Came out very good considering the telescope and viewing conditions. Still cannot get a picture using the back.

        Steep learning curve for beginner.

Comments about Celestron NexImage 5 Solar System Imager (5MP):

This version is a HUGE step up from their previous model and is technically a bargain compared to other imagers with (almost) comparable specifications.

It's appears to be very well made.

I'm a beginner, so I'm getting mixed results with the process needed to get it right.
This is the kind you thing where you must read the manual along with getting advice on various astronomy forums from seasoned astro photographers.

So far, I'm not terribly impressed, but I'm aware of what it is capable of. These are very specific tools for astronomy that I don't fully understand how to use yet. I wish it were more intuitive, but it seems to be the nature of the beast.

        Your mileage may vary.
