Comments about Korg KO2 Kaossilator 2 Dynamic Phrase Synthesizer:

I bought this as a gift for a friend who makes electronic music. He likes to go on long bikerides and is inspired to make music while he's out. This allows him to make all kinds of loops anywhere, record his beatboxing, and take them back and sample them in ableton.

The touch pad can be linked to a key and mode allowing you to cheat in the best sort of way. you can swipe your fingers over the pad semi randomly and grab only the notes you want. The loop recording has two decks and can be overdubbed for layering sounds.

Not a big box on sound design. Most of the sounds are presets. This being said it reduces the tweaky ness of the process and allows you to jump right in.

I highly recommend this box. Its like a gameboy for making electronic music.

Comments about Korg KO2 Kaossilator 2 Dynamic Phrase Synthesizer:

Bang for your buck, the greatest studio tool you can find (except maybe an SM57). You can do so much with this thing, loop beats, bass lines, record it internally then put it into your computer. The drum sounds are extremely high quality for a $ machine. Love this thing. Don't expect it to do everything, but for the price and near unlimited possibilities its amazing. Learning to program it will help you out alot, adjusting BPM and keys and scales.

Comments about Korg KO2 Kaossilator 2 Dynamic Phrase Synthesizer:

First off The Kaossilator 2 is not a synth. Its more a interactive sample player. interactive in that the touch pad allows for accessing several variations of each sound giving the impression of a synth. This is not a negative as the device is brimmimg with great useful sounds. the most unique feature are the two independant multy track banks. Like a looper you can layer a seemingly infinate number of performances in each bank (there is some degridation of sound when you get beyond 4 or 5 layers but again for something the size of a cell phone theres a lot of function.operation is dead simple, a slider chooses sounds and function parammiters and the performance pad is used for triggering and melody. melody creation on the very small pad is assisted by presetting the scale mode which helps you play in tune. All scale and tuning functions are available.this is a kicken musical device and I do recommend it but there are a few downsides. primarily the input output jacks. There's not much you can do with the stereo 1/8 plugs. the out put level is quite low and requires an external pre amp if you plan on using it live (as I do) Battery life at 2 hrs on 2 double AA's could be better. I'd like to see a Kaossilator 3 with the larger form factor of the original with the functionality (or more) of this device.I could go on there are many more excellent functions and there are more drawbacks but this is a useful device just don't expect it to do everything you would wish for. This a great tool for the upcoming rapper or for soloist accompaniment or just for fun.

Comments about Korg KO2 Kaossilator 2 Dynamic Phrase Synthesizer:

First just to address the comment on: ". There is ZERO file management." - this is simply not true: I just saved and deleted 2 test tracks: Create a test track and then navigate to the menu option "Loop Save/Load" using the "fnc" button, then press the "-" key to save the track. When it completes press "fnc" a few more times to get to the "Audio Player" function. On this screen you can completely navigate throug the entire Micro SD contents, and if a file is a selected you have options "Back" "|> (Play) and "Delete". If you select delete here, the saved tracks will be gone. You can access all files saved without any trouble.Regarding the 1 longer 16 beat track vs. 2 8 beat tracks - yes it is technically the same, however you have a lot more ease of being able to mix 2 totally different sounds because you can save 1 8 beat track and take as long as you like to create the 2nd. Then on top of that save unlimited mixesl. To me this is a gain, not a loss here, and probably just a bit different if you were really into the Kaosillator 1. I personally like having the 2 loops over the 1 longer one because I can mix more diversely Tons of built in sounds, drums, and mix options - I'm quite enjoying it, though I never owned the original one.

Comments about Korg KO2 Kaossilator 2 Dynamic Phrase Synthesizer:

OK - this does more or less what the product description says, and in some ways is improved over the KO1. There are specific improvements: more sounds, 2 loop tracks, saving to SD card, informative display, sound input to name a few. BUT there are some problems:1. The loops are only 8 beats long. No 16 beat option like on the KO1. 2. There is no easy "undo" like on the KO1 when you add a layer to a loop, so this can be frustrating. 3. There is ZERO file management. So you can save to SD but you cannot delete your saved files or choose to overwrite an old file if you want. So EVERY time you save, it is in the next of the 99 slots. File number is ALWAYS incremented EVERY time you save. And you cannot save or load individual loops - only pairs of loops. 4. There are some bugs - it does not correctly display loop length after loading a new loop. If you load an 8 beat loop it still displays as if you are working with 4 beats, and this impacts recording. At times, text on the screen gets garbled- words overlay other words and it is not readable. 5. You cannot control the volume of tracks or loops directly - you can only cross-fade the two loop tracks. 6. The arpeggiator patterns are only 2 beats long, and they always start with a note played on the first beat. Kind of limited and (I hear) a step back from the KO1 arpeggiator options. Let's hope Korg offers some kind of firmware update, otherwise this seems like a bit of a dud. Honestly, the file system and file loading problems make this feel like a pre-release or immature product.
