The ART USB Phono Plus is a flexible phono (turntable) preamp with a USB interface and digital connections. The USB Phono Plus is an ideal solution for quality recordings while digitizing old vinyl collections, connecting a turntable to a line input, or as a simple audio interface for your Windows or Mac OS computer. There are optical digital inputs and outputs, S/PDIF input and analog preamp outputs. Also featured is a headphone output, gain control and monitor level adjustment controls. I have used the product several times and it works as described very well. I have copied several vinyl LPs and the digital result seems to be virtually identical to the source. SoundSaver Express software is included and I use it to make the initial digital conversion. This software has some signal modification features that claim to fix the LP static and noise problems. I have not used those features because I do not want the noise filter to be applied to the entire digital file. Instead I have elected to use Audacity software, which I am familiar with, to clean up the digital file. The bad thing about the Art USB Phono Plus is that it accurately captures everything that the phono and LP produce, namely static and pop. So the reality in my case is that there is a lot of work to clean up the original digital file before it meets my standard to include in my digital playlist. I have used Audacity to clean up the file and then I make an uncompressed .wav and a .mpg file. I then use the .wav file to create a music CD to store with my other CD's and now I have a backup for my vinyl LP.

Unit seems well built, tested and works, though not able to check that it meets its published specs. Doesn't require a special driver, and the USB connection seems solid. The software won't run. Not at all. Tried it on older XP computers, even though the company only allows you 2 computers to run on, which is a ridiculous limitation, especially when you are trying so hard to get the recording software to work at all. It doesn't. Not ever. Wrote to them, not a peep in response. You will either have to buy their recording software for $, or look elsewhere. Either way, forget the lure of noise and pop reduction, you won't get even a look at it, so don't waste your time.Despite what seems to be good hardware, I can't give higher than one star, since the company won't respond, won't provide software as advertised, and obviously wan't stand behind their product.[*] Unfortunately, other units with similar specs are not nearly this low priced, but if you want good sound and software, you have to pay, as this avenue is a dead end. Too bad too, because there are a lot of us out there with vinyl and tape that want to convert, and this product comes close, but no cigar. They just don't care.

USB Phono Plus, What I Wanted

Comments about ART USB Phono Plus Phono Preamp with USB:

The ART USB Phono Plus with the enclosed software for Audacity 2.5 were work for me. My old turntable has no line output, but it didn't matter. The USB can handle either phono, or line inputs. No more under amplified LP to CD recordings, plus the vinyl library can now be recorded and passed onto others. It will take a while, though. I have over 700 records to sort through. I like the size of the USB too. It's about the size of Don Trump's wallet, and 140 times smaller than his ego.

I use it to transfer my old vinyls and cassette tapes to CDs. It works fine with Audacity, but I understand it also works well with other similar software programs. My only complaint is that it requires headphones to monitor input music programs and no input volume control. But that is minor. Other than that, it accomplishes all that I intended to use this device for.

Comments about ART USB Phono Plus Phono Preamp with USB:

My USB Phono Plus came bundled with Bias Soundsaver Express which no matter what I tried would not run on Windows 7 64bit. Additionally, the software authorisation process will not allow me to de-authorise to even tranfer licence to another machine.Bias website does not respond for email help requests. I have managed to record off a vinyl test LP using Wavelab, however there seems to be an inordinate amount of gain in the driver, I needed to set the control panel volume to 12 (out of 100) and the gain trim knob on the unit set at zero, to get what I would consider a reference level. While I believe the unit is capable of delivering good results, it's not really an out of the box solution for the novice hence I would only conditionally recommend this unit to others(re "Bottom line" above).

Bought and returned 2 of these. Everyone is singing its praises, and when it worked it worked nicely, but every so often - 2 or three times per song ( i was using it to digitize vinyl) I heard beeps and other weird noises. When i brought the second one back the salesman at B&H explained that ART is slow to release Mac drivers. So, it's probably awesome if you have an old OS, but if you're with Mountain Lion or later, until they update the drivers, you're not gonna like this thing. This review is from 12/13

This preamp is built like a tank. All alum Housing. This is a perfect quick interface between a vinyl record player with a magnetic cartridge. You can use the earphone jack to monitor. You can pipe the audio from ANYTHING else you can find to connect to this preamp (like tapes, a mic). The controls have an excellent range of control. None of this too loud, oops, too soft stuff. If you want to record music from sources that use almost extinct unamplified musical instruments, this is the go between control. This preamp doesn't add any noise. A re-recording passing through this preamp into a PC is worth being lovingly restored with your favorite music software.

I've tried hooking it up various ways and so far have not been successful in getting this to work. I'll try again. Thus, I give it a "3" for now. It's not intuitive. I wish the instructions were more detailed.

Perfect, no nonsense converting. Been recording from tape to computer using Audacity. Feels well built too, and connections feel nice and sturdy. Powered by the USB, so no power cord to worry about. Not much else to say, it just gets the job done and is easy as can be. Plug in the source, adjust the gain, record on computer. Just what I was looking for.

You have a good-quality old turntable, a laptop, and a pile of precious old vinyl. What to do? Get this, plug it in -- it powers from the USB -- connect it to the turntable, and you have all the hardware you need (assuming the laptop has a sound card). For software, I use audacity on linux -- I didn't have to buy anything. One key point: Be sure the button is INPUT button is pushed in to its PHONO setting (it lights up yellow), or the level it puts out will be too low. When it's pushed, the level should need at most minor tweaks. Build quality is very nice, with an aluminum case.

I bought this product to replace one that quit working. I am using it to convert my analog albums to the digital format.

                                                  I simply love the line/USB/optical in/out.

I purchased this item after my GemSound device stopped working. I am really happy about the improved quality this device outputs. I am using this to digitize my vinyl collection of house, hiphop, and freestyle.

I wish I had bought this one first instead of buying something cheap before. Now it cost me 1.5 times.
