Tamron's SP 24-70mm f/2.8 DI VC USD Lens for Canon Cameras delivers a very useful range from 24mm true wide-angle to 70mm short telephoto, useful for landscapes, interiors, portraits, street photography and much more. The continuous maximum aperture of f/2.8 combined with built-in Vibration Compensation image stabilization make it possible to achieve stellar results in low-light situations, while the Ultrasonic Silent Drive (USD) gives you very quiet autofocus capabilities that are ideal for shooting video.

The 24-70mm lens uses specialized high-grade glass in the three LD elements, three Glass Molded Aspherical Lenses, one Hybrid Aspherical Lens and two XR (Extra Refractive Index) glasses, for excellent image quality. Using a rounded 9-blade diaphragm, the lens delivers fine bokeh--the out-of-focus area in a photo. Moisture-resistant construction helps protect the lens from any water that comes near it. And all of this is in a compact (3.5 x 4.6"), lightweight (29.1 oz) package that won't wear you out, even carrying it all day.

High-Speed Standard Zoom With Built-In VC (Vibration Compensation)

World's first full-size, high-speed standard zoom with built-in VC (Vibration Compensation). Even when shooting in low-light conditions with a slow shutter speed to render sharpness, Tamron's acclaimed VC allows for stable handheld camera work, to more fully enjoy the benefits of this high-speed zoom lens.
Uses specialized high-grade glass in the three LD elements, three Glass Molded Aspherical Lenses, one Hybrid Aspherical Lens and two XR (Extra Refractive Index) glasses, delivering top-of-the-class quality images suited to this high-grade lens. Using a rounded diaphragm, the lens achieves gorgeous blur effects.
Features USD (Ultrasonic Silent Drive) to power a speedy AF drive together with a continuous manual mechanism.
This high-speed standard zoom lens has a wide-end focal length of 24mm that expands the photographic area.
The lens adopts the new technology including the latest optical design, VC (Vibration Compensation) image stabilization and USD (Ultrasonic Silent Drive), all in a lighter and more compact package.
Moisture-resistant construction helps prevent water from penetrating the lens.

VC (Vibration Compensation)

VC (Vibration Compensation) is Tamron's proprietary image stabilization system. Tamron's VC is a three-coil system, whereby three driving coils activate the shake-compensating VC lens group electromagnetically via three steel balls. The VC lens elements are held in place only by contact with the steel balls, achieving smooth movement with little friction. This provides a stable viewfinder image with excellent tracking performance. And as the VC lens may be moved in parallel using only the motorized control, the mechanical structure has been simplified, enabling the creation of a more compact lens.

New VC System (Moving Coil Method)

Tamron's original VC image stabilization mechanism utilized a moving magnet system whereby a heavy magnet was positioned near the moving VC lens element. In the new VC unit the positions of the magnet and the coil are reversed, because of this the VC optical lens element is attached to the coil. The new VC mechanism employs a moving coil mechanism with a lightweight coil, and the lighter coil reduces the load on the drive system. Thus, the lighter, more compact new VC unit contributes to the lens's overall light weight and compact size. Because the 24-70 mm F/2.8 Di VC USD is a high-speed zoom lens with maximum aperture of F/2.8, its VC system must drive a lens that is larger and heavier than other zooms. Therefore, the shape, size and layout of the drive coils are all designed to obtain sufficient thrust. The result is a full-size, high-speed zoom that provides the same high level of compensation effect.

About the Ultrasonic Motor

In the ultrasonic motor, a piezoelectric element arranged in a ring formation generates ultrasonic vibrations in a metallic ring stator, and the vibration energy is used to rotate a metallic ring rotor that is attached to the stator. The rotation energy is in turn transferred from the metallic ring rotor to operate the focus lens.

I shoot general photography, which includes all sorts of activity, from restaurant outings to gardening. When I bought this lens, I had currently owned the Canon 24-70mm L mark 1, and loved that lens, except it didnt have IS, which is incredibly useful for video and low light. I found that my keeper rates have not changed going to the Tamron (if anything, it improved from great to excellent), but the sharpness had definitely improved at every focal length and aperture. I had to verify that it wasnt my imagination, so I tried a few tests on a tripod, using live view, and indeed the tamron was a tad sharper at every focal length and aperture on my full frame camera.

It's not the perfect lens though (I dont believe one exists!), it is the jack of all trades. VC is extremely competent, probably the best in the business. AF is not L fast, but fast enough that I dont miss shots, and even AI Servo works fine. The build quality is on par with the 24-105mm, very very solidly built. The bokeh does have issues(onion and a tad bit busy), but I've found them to be very minor with real world shots, and very easy to clean up. The color rendition is L level. Vignetting is kind of odd on this lens. The drop off is less overall than the mark 1, but where it actually vignettes, it's more pronounced. F2.8 is very sharp, from corner to corner, I have no hesitation shooting it wide open. There was no way I could get the canon 24-70mm Mark 1 to be as sharp as the tamron at F2.8. I was very suprised by that finding, but it is what it is.

In the end, it came down to a hard decision. Having a Canon L series lens is very comforting. You know that you've got the best tool made by the manufacturer. It had better bokeh, but was less sharp. It was built like a brick, and weighed like one too.... It didnt have VC no matter how you looked at it, and I found overall image quality slightly better on the tamron, since bokeh is mostly preferential, sharpness is not. It's not that the L is a poor performer, it's just that I found out that the Tamron is better, so I cant go back, it's no longer a logical decision if I did. I sold my L mark 1 after a few days of shooting and personal tests. Very happy with this lens.

I am using this lens with Canon 5dmk III. I purchased the lens about three months ago. I was excited with the VC feature on this fast zoom range (one and only?) 24-70.

Then I discovered inaccurate autofocus when I was using the left-most and right-most 3 columns AF points of 5dmk3. Not just slight out of focus but way off. Turned the lens in for service/calibrating. The technician said the lens has not been updated for the latest mk3. After a few days, I got the lens back, tested it, and the same problem still existed. Turned the lens in again for calibrating. Same result. The technician kept adjusting. As we were getting the closer to accurate, the center AF became compromised. Then we set back to default. Accurate center but inaccurate at edge.

Finally, I request for an exchange and they replaced it with another copy. Tessted the new copy, and I discovered the same problem. I talked to the technician and he said no idea why this happening. So they sent my sample images to Tamron Japan and still awaiting for replies until today i wrote this.

This is so frustrating, as I am using edge AF points 80-90% of the times. For still objects; shooting on tripod, I can AF with center point and pan. But for other cases (moving objects), in which I do the most, this method is not possible. I really wish Tamron will resolve this issue. I really like this lens but without accurate AF at all points, this lens does no good for me.

    So far so good

Comments about Tamron SP 24-70mm f/2.8 DI VC USD Lens for Canon Cameras:

I'm a hobbyist and like to shoot my kids mostly. This lens has already improved my indoor shots by simply allowing a larger aperture at the most common shooting distances. Not sure if the IS feature is working... it seems like getting the focal point is a bit more difficult than the kit lens or a nifty fifty. Time will tell if I love it or not.

I use this lens for everything from weddings to catalogue photography, and it stands up to the Canon 24-70 L on sharpness and overall quality. As an added bonus, this lens has image stabilization, which the Canon does not! So far in my use I've been super impressed, and am really pleased with this purchase.

      Nice lens !

      By Al

Comments about Tamron SP 24-70mm f/2.8 DI VC USD Lens for Canon Cameras:

Well, after reading a lot of reviews on this lens sometimes very polarized I still decided to go for it. Absolutely do not regret buying this lens ! This lens is way better than my kit 24-105 F4.Auto focus works very well on my Canon 6d even at f2.8. Lens is very sharp thought out the aperture range. My only remark is about vignetting in the corners when it is at 2.8. But this is easily correctable. The main advantage of this lens is VC which allows me to shot in the low light hand held, this is feature cannot be matched by competeters. This what I figure out there are probably shady vendors who are salling defective batches of the 24-70, look at the serial number and check it with Tamron. The Serial number of my lens starts with 04, I may speculate that some lenses before number 02 had some auto focus issues, apparently Tamron has corrected this in the later series of the lens. I bought my lens from B&H and so far so good. I live the lens.

My lens also has auto focus issues but it works ok. I feel that the images are soft. Does not compare with the Canon 24-70mm f/2.8 either version. I paid $ but as I write this I see a price of $ which I would never pay for this lens. The lens has no lens creep. Image stabilization woorks very well.

I bought this lens for portraits, landscapes and distances too short for my Canon 70-200. I have taken a lot of portrait shots and candid party shots with and without the 580ex flash. It works well on both my EOS 50D and 70D. I am very pleased especially with it's no flash low light performance. It's not a cheap lens unless compared with the Canon 24-70.

I use it professionally for portraits and weddings and have not run into any problems. It is a little slower than my canon lenses when it comes to focusing but not so much that it is a deal breaker.

Comments about Tamron SP 24-70mm f/2.8 DI VC USD Lens for Canon Cameras:

Got the lens to complete the lens range from 10mm to 200mm and this lens fits perfectly with my other equipment.

I use it for many different "jobs" from photographing hummingbirds (using remote trigger) to church photos (inside low light) and it works as intended. No complains.

A minor issue is that the lens hood is hard to attach and takes some "force" to get it locked.

So far, I really love this lens. The build quality is nice and I've already have gotten some beautiful shots with it. This is a great alternative to the more expensive Canon L lens. Yes the L is slightly better at 2.8 but for the money the Tamron really shines. The differences IMO doesn't justify the price difference.

This is a very versatile lens with fast shutter speed. I have only had it a short time but has become my go to lens. The focus is fast and quiet while providing sharp images. Great lens for landscapes and portraits. Will be testing on architecture soon but expect same positive results.

Comments about Tamron SP 24-70mm f/2.8 DI VC USD Lens for Canon Cameras:

I debated for quite awhile about getting this lens, and now I'm glad I did. It's a great all purpose walk around lens which produces very good images. I have been using my Canon 70-200 2.8 for just about everything but this 24-70mm, in my opinion takes photos equal in quality. Using my 5d mark ll, I can really crop a photo and keep great resolution. I'm not a professional but I do know this lens rocks.

Comments about Tamron SP 24-70mm f/2.8 DI VC USD Lens for Canon Cameras:

I had been renting the Canon 24-70 as needed for quite some time before I decided it was time for my own. I had never considered Tamron before, but after talking with a few other photographers, and a little research I decided to try the more cost-effective Tamron. I don't regret it for a second, I wish I had purchased it sooner! Photos are very sharp, focus is great, quite and quick. Plus, this has vibration control which the Canon version is lacking. I'd definitely purchase this lens again.
