Tamron's SP 24-70mm f/2.8 DI VC USD Lens for Canon Cameras delivers a very useful range from 24mm true wide-angle to 70mm short telephoto, useful for landscapes, interiors, portraits, street photography and much more. The continuous maximum aperture of f/2.8 combined with built-in Vibration Compensation image stabilization make it possible to achieve stellar results in low-light situations, while the Ultrasonic Silent Drive (USD) gives you very quiet autofocus capabilities that are ideal for shooting video.

The 24-70mm lens uses specialized high-grade glass in the three LD elements, three Glass Molded Aspherical Lenses, one Hybrid Aspherical Lens and two XR (Extra Refractive Index) glasses, for excellent image quality. Using a rounded 9-blade diaphragm, the lens delivers fine bokeh--the out-of-focus area in a photo. Moisture-resistant construction helps protect the lens from any water that comes near it. And all of this is in a compact (3.5 x 4.6"), lightweight (29.1 oz) package that won't wear you out, even carrying it all day.

High-Speed Standard Zoom With Built-In VC (Vibration Compensation)

World's first full-size, high-speed standard zoom with built-in VC (Vibration Compensation). Even when shooting in low-light conditions with a slow shutter speed to render sharpness, Tamron's acclaimed VC allows for stable handheld camera work, to more fully enjoy the benefits of this high-speed zoom lens.
Uses specialized high-grade glass in the three LD elements, three Glass Molded Aspherical Lenses, one Hybrid Aspherical Lens and two XR (Extra Refractive Index) glasses, delivering top-of-the-class quality images suited to this high-grade lens. Using a rounded diaphragm, the lens achieves gorgeous blur effects.
Features USD (Ultrasonic Silent Drive) to power a speedy AF drive together with a continuous manual mechanism.
This high-speed standard zoom lens has a wide-end focal length of 24mm that expands the photographic area.
The lens adopts the new technology including the latest optical design, VC (Vibration Compensation) image stabilization and USD (Ultrasonic Silent Drive), all in a lighter and more compact package.
Moisture-resistant construction helps prevent water from penetrating the lens.

VC (Vibration Compensation)

VC (Vibration Compensation) is Tamron's proprietary image stabilization system. Tamron's VC is a three-coil system, whereby three driving coils activate the shake-compensating VC lens group electromagnetically via three steel balls. The VC lens elements are held in place only by contact with the steel balls, achieving smooth movement with little friction. This provides a stable viewfinder image with excellent tracking performance. And as the VC lens may be moved in parallel using only the motorized control, the mechanical structure has been simplified, enabling the creation of a more compact lens.

New VC System (Moving Coil Method)

Tamron's original VC image stabilization mechanism utilized a moving magnet system whereby a heavy magnet was positioned near the moving VC lens element. In the new VC unit the positions of the magnet and the coil are reversed, because of this the VC optical lens element is attached to the coil. The new VC mechanism employs a moving coil mechanism with a lightweight coil, and the lighter coil reduces the load on the drive system. Thus, the lighter, more compact new VC unit contributes to the lens's overall light weight and compact size. Because the 24-70 mm F/2.8 Di VC USD is a high-speed zoom lens with maximum aperture of F/2.8, its VC system must drive a lens that is larger and heavier than other zooms. Therefore, the shape, size and layout of the drive coils are all designed to obtain sufficient thrust. The result is a full-size, high-speed zoom that provides the same high level of compensation effect.

About the Ultrasonic Motor

In the ultrasonic motor, a piezoelectric element arranged in a ring formation generates ultrasonic vibrations in a metallic ring stator, and the vibration energy is used to rotate a metallic ring rotor that is attached to the stator. The rotation energy is in turn transferred from the metallic ring rotor to operate the focus lens.

I shoot general photography, which includes all sorts of activity, from restaurant outings to gardening. When I bought this lens, I had currently owned the Canon 24-70mm L mark 1, and loved that lens, except it didnt have IS, which is incredibly useful for video and low light. I found that my keeper rates have not changed going to the Tamron (if anything, it improved from great to excellent), but the sharpness had definitely improved at every focal length and aperture. I had to verify that it wasnt my imagination, so I tried a few tests on a tripod, using live view, and indeed the tamron was a tad sharper at every focal length and aperture on my full frame camera.

It's not the perfect lens though (I dont believe one exists!), it is the jack of all trades. VC is extremely competent, probably the best in the business. AF is not L fast, but fast enough that I dont miss shots, and even AI Servo works fine. The build quality is on par with the 24-105mm, very very solidly built. The bokeh does have issues(onion and a tad bit busy), but I've found them to be very minor with real world shots, and very easy to clean up. The color rendition is L level. Vignetting is kind of odd on this lens. The drop off is less overall than the mark 1, but where it actually vignettes, it's more pronounced. F2.8 is very sharp, from corner to corner, I have no hesitation shooting it wide open. There was no way I could get the canon 24-70mm Mark 1 to be as sharp as the tamron at F2.8. I was very suprised by that finding, but it is what it is.

In the end, it came down to a hard decision. Having a Canon L series lens is very comforting. You know that you've got the best tool made by the manufacturer. It had better bokeh, but was less sharp. It was built like a brick, and weighed like one too.... It didnt have VC no matter how you looked at it, and I found overall image quality slightly better on the tamron, since bokeh is mostly preferential, sharpness is not. It's not that the L is a poor performer, it's just that I found out that the Tamron is better, so I cant go back, it's no longer a logical decision if I did. I sold my L mark 1 after a few days of shooting and personal tests. Very happy with this lens.

I am using this lens with Canon 5dmk III. I purchased the lens about three months ago. I was excited with the VC feature on this fast zoom range (one and only?) 24-70.

Then I discovered inaccurate autofocus when I was using the left-most and right-most 3 columns AF points of 5dmk3. Not just slight out of focus but way off. Turned the lens in for service/calibrating. The technician said the lens has not been updated for the latest mk3. After a few days, I got the lens back, tested it, and the same problem still existed. Turned the lens in again for calibrating. Same result. The technician kept adjusting. As we were getting the closer to accurate, the center AF became compromised. Then we set back to default. Accurate center but inaccurate at edge.

Finally, I request for an exchange and they replaced it with another copy. Tessted the new copy, and I discovered the same problem. I talked to the technician and he said no idea why this happening. So they sent my sample images to Tamron Japan and still awaiting for replies until today i wrote this.

This is so frustrating, as I am using edge AF points 80-90% of the times. For still objects; shooting on tripod, I can AF with center point and pan. But for other cases (moving objects), in which I do the most, this method is not possible. I really wish Tamron will resolve this issue. I really like this lens but without accurate AF at all points, this lens does no good for me.

    Great all around lens

Comments about Tamron SP 24-70mm f/2.8 DI VC USD Lens for Canon Cameras:

So far, I really love this lens. The build quality is nice and I've already have gotten some beautiful shots with it. This is a great alternative to the more expensive Canon L lens. Yes the L is slightly better at 2.8 but for the money the Tamron really shines. The differences IMO doesn't justify the price difference.

This is a very versatile lens with fast shutter speed. I have only had it a short time but has become my go to lens. The focus is fast and quiet while providing sharp images. Great lens for landscapes and portraits. Will be testing on architecture soon but expect same positive results.

I debated for quite awhile about getting this lens, and now I'm glad I did. It's a great all purpose walk around lens which produces very good images. I have been using my Canon 70-200 2.8 for just about everything but this 24-70mm, in my opinion takes photos equal in quality. Using my 5d mark ll, I can really crop a photo and keep great resolution. I'm not a professional but I do know this lens rocks.

I had been renting the Canon 24-70 as needed for quite some time before I decided it was time for my own. I had never considered Tamron before, but after talking with a few other photographers, and a little research I decided to try the more cost-effective Tamron. I don't regret it for a second, I wish I had purchased it sooner! Photos are very sharp, focus is great, quite and quick. Plus, this has vibration control which the Canon version is lacking. I'd definitely purchase this lens again.

Nice solid feel to the lens! I've had the lens for a little over a week and have taken some really nice shots with my Canon T3i. As others have mentioned, it takes some effort to move the zoom ring (as compared to other lenses where one can easily adjust the zoom with just a finger).

Great lens if a bit heavy. Image stabilization very effective, was able to hand hold at 24 mm braced down to 1/2 sec with sharp results. Autofocus quick and sharp. Vignette is pronounced at wide angle but easily corrected in post. LR profile works quite well with little to no tweaking. After using this lens for a few weeks I am quite happy with this purchase.

Comments about Tamron SP 24-70mm f/2.8 DI VC USD Lens for Canon Cameras:

After read many good reviews, bought one, tested and compared wiht my 24-105 F4L, found it is really sharp wide open at F2.8. at 24mm & 35mm F2.8 it is sharper than 24-105 at F4 in the center, at 50mm & 70mm F2.8 it is about the same as 24-105 at F4, color and contrast are excellent same as Canon. It can produce very very usable images at F2.8, this is what I paid for, since I already have the excellent 24-105 F4L. Field test samples are available at my photostream [@]. The focus is slower than Canon. The VC does not work well as Canon IS at shutter around 1/60 S - 1/120 S, the VC works really well when the shutter speed gets really low, I can get sharp images at 1/3 S. some of the field sample images were taken in the late evening handheld and with CP filter mounted on the lens.It is not a perfect lens, the copy I keep is the 3rd copy I have tested. The first copy I got is back focus, it was sharp, just back focus, this is not a problem if your camera has AF Microadjustment foundation. If you got a copy not sharp, then try AFMA. The 2nd Copy I got has focus problem, single point focus mode can get sharp images, but multi-point focus mode can result blur images. For the copy I keep, multi-point focus mode can produce excellent images, but when single point focus mode used, the images are evne better.I do not have the Canon 24-70 F2.8 II, can not compare side by side. What I think is that in the lab, probably Canon 24-70 II sharper the Tam, but in the field if you shoot handhled, the Tam will be sharper than Canon. The VC will help you to get sharper images.I am very happy with my new Tamron, look at sample images and zoom to 100%, it could not be sharper. this is my 3rd Tamron lens, Previously owned Tam 28-75 F2.8, recnetly bought Tamron 150-600, all of them are excellent and affordable. Tamron has done a great job.

I am mostly a wildlife/bird photographer, but was looking for a good quality, medium build 24-70 for taking quality pics of the grandkids. After reading the reviews the tamron seemed to be a good choice. Ordered from BandH and promptly received it. From the get go I could sense problems. The autofocus was slow, inconsistent and I could not get very good images. So I set the micro adjust and ended up at a plus 5 which should really not make to much of a difference. In just nice, easy autofocus situations I was getting very few quality images. I spent about 3 hours with it and shot about a thousand images of which very few were acceptable. Put my canons back on and they worked fine. Rather than mess around with it anymore I just sent it back for a refund. I must say the image stabilization seemed to work very well when looking through the viewfinder and it appears to be a very well made lens it just didn't work for me. BandH was great and promptly refunded the money. I will do business with them again.

Comments about Tamron SP 24-70mm f/2.8 DI VC USD Lens for Canon Cameras:

I have now used this lens for the past month. I purchased it to replace my old worn Sigma 24-70. I will tell you it never ceases to impress me. I have been able to use it in situations I would never have DARED to before. As a result, I have spent less time in photoshop correcting problems I had with my other lens. It is now my go-to lens and rarely leaves my camera when taking images. I highly recommend it. Don't delay ORDER today!!

Sharp images, good colors, excellent bokeh. Focus is a tad bit slower than I expected, but it is fast enough. A bit heavy, but feels sturdy. For the amount I saved by not paying for Canon, the minor differences are more than worth the savings. Glad I got it.

Comments about Tamron SP 24-70mm f/2.8 DI VC USD Lens for Canon Cameras:

I use this lens for video on a couple of camera bodies. It is just a great all around lens, good quality and image stabilization! I can't exactly rave about it, but for that matter I've never used a 24-70 that I've loved...including Canon's L series which I sold a while back. The build quality of the Tamron has a bit more plastic than I'd like, but I really can't complain. Four stars because it doesn't blow me away and the build quality could be a wee bit better. But for $ it's a no brainer over Canon's L model imho. I'm enjoying it and it gets it's use. I'd definitely recommend it.

Comments about Tamron SP 24-70mm f/2.8 DI VC USD Lens for Canon Cameras:

I use this lens for photography and videography on a Canon 6D. This lens is as sharp as the Canon version, and sharper than the Sigma version. Focus ring is smooth. Smooth enough to rack focus, but the zoom ring isn't as smooth as a Canon L ring. You can't pull off smooth zooms in video. I had a minor problem with AF, a few times it took a long time to focus, but the problem seemed to "go away." Also, the lens is built great, same material that the camera is made of. It is relatively heavy, but that's not something that bothers me. The lens doesn't claim anything about weather resistance, but I have found that it is weather resistant somewhat. I haven't dunked it in the pool, but I did a shoot with it out in the snow, when it was really coming down, and it did fine. Lastly, I would like to say that for $1,000 less than the Canon version, PLUS image stabilization (Vibration Compensation) it is definitely a deal breaker for me to choose Canon 24-70 2.8L. GET THIS LENS RIGHT NOW!

I purchased this lens at the recommendation of my photography mentor. And I couldn't be happier! The lens performs as promised. It is well-crafted and had features I hadn't expected (like the LOCK button to facilitate safe transport of the lens). I also enjoy the image stabilization offered on this lens, which I wasn't able to find elsewhere.

Totally happy with this lens, and I expect to purchase more from this brand in the future.

Last year I bought this lens with Nikon mount for my D-800 and D-600.
I used it all year for landscape shots as well as a general "walking around"
lens. I was so satisfied with it that this year I bought the same lens in a
Canon mount for my 5DMKIII, and my 6D....Again, it has performed
flawlessly....It focuses quickly, it takes great landscape shots and I am
very pleased with this lens. NO regrets....

Comments about Tamron SP 24-70mm f/2.8 DI VC USD Lens for Canon Cameras:

Bought this lens mainly for my C100 during wedding video shoots. As this was my first image stabilized lens, I was amazed! Had been shooting with the Canon 24-70mm 2.8L lens, wonderful picture quality, but every touch, pan, zoom was extremely difficult. Even the glidecam shots were tough. First day with the lens, my C100 would stop autofocusing. Lens was on autofocus, C100 was set to autofocus. Would have to power cycle the camera several times to get the auto focus to return. Thought is was just a fluke, then on the second day this happened during a training class for the C100 in New York. Happened several times in the hotel room, yet I could not produce this auto focus problem with a Canon lens. Decided to return the lens to B&H rather than risk this happening during a wedding. Bummer, I LOVED the specs on this lens! The auto focus was fast, much faster than my Canon L glass, had image stabilization and f2.8. Probably a great lens for photography, just question the compatibility with the Canon C100 with dual pixel upgrade.

Yes, the zoom ring goes the 'wrong way' and it's a -tad- stiff (for now). AF isn't as "fast"; but the 24-70 Canon isn't a peach compared to others either.

Now that's out of the way. It's near perfect in every other regard. The VC in exchange for some overall sharp pixels is worth the trade off.
