Product Highlights
  • Wide-Angle 24-70mm Full-Frame Zoom Lens
  • Built-In Image Stabilization
  • Ultrasonic Silent Drive for Silent AF
  • LD, Aspherical Elements for Sharp Images
  • Moisture-Resistant Construction
  • Compact (3.5x4.6") & Lightweight (29oz)

Tamron's SP 24-70mm f/2.8 DI VC USD Lens for Nikon Cameras delivers a very useful range from 24mm true wide-angle to 70mm short telephoto, useful for landscapes, interiors, portraits, street photography and much more. The continuous maximum aperture of f/2.8 combined with built-in Vibration Compensation image stabilization make it possible to achieve stellar results in low-light situations, while the Ultrasonic Silent Drive (USD) gives you very quiet autofocus capabilities that are ideal for shooting video.

The 24-70mm lens uses specialized high-grade glass in the three LD elements, three Glass Molded Aspherical Lenses, one Hybrid Aspherical Lens and two XR (Extra Refractive Index) glasses, for excellent image quality. Using a rounded 9-blade diaphragm, the lens delivers fine bokeh--the out-of-focus area in a photo. Moisture-resistant construction helps protect the lens from any water that comes near it. And all of this is in a compact (3.5 x 4.6"), lightweight (29.1 oz) package that won't wear you out, even carrying it all day.

High-Speed Standard Zoom With Built-In VC (Vibration Compensation)

World's first full-size, high-speed standard zoom with built-in VC (Vibration Compensation). Even when shooting in low-light conditions with a slow shutter speed to render sharpness, Tamron's acclaimed VC allows for stable handheld camera work, to more fully enjoy the benefits of this high-speed zoom lens.
Uses specialized high-grade glass in the three LD elements, three Glass Molded Aspherical Lenses, one Hybrid Aspherical Lens and two XR (Extra Refractive Index) glasses, delivering top-of-the-class quality images suited to this high-grade lens. Using a rounded diaphragm, the lens achieves gorgeous blur effects.
Features USD (Ultrasonic Silent Drive) to power a speedy AF drive together with a continuous manual mechanism.
This high-speed standard zoom lens has a wide-end focal length of 24mm that expands the photographic area.
The lens adopts the new technology including the latest optical design, VC (Vibration Compensation) image stabilization and USD (Ultrasonic Silent Drive), all in a lighter and more compact package.
Moisture-resistant construction helps prevent water from penetrating the lens.

VC (Vibration Compensation)

VC (Vibration Compensation) is Tamron's proprietary image stabilization system. Tamron's VC is a three-coil system, whereby three driving coils activate the shake-compensating VC lens group electromagnetically via three steel balls. The VC lens elements are held in place only by contact with the steel balls, achieving smooth movement with little friction. This provides a stable viewfinder image with excellent tracking performance. And as the VC lens may be moved in parallel using only the motorized control, the mechanical structure has been simplified, enabling the creation of a more compact lens.

New VC System (Moving Coil Method)

Tamron's original VC image stabilization mechanism utilized a moving magnet system whereby a heavy magnet was positioned near the moving VC lens element. In the new VC unit the positions of the magnet and the coil are reversed, because of this the VC optical lens element is attached to the coil. The new VC mechanism employs a moving coil mechanism with a lightweight coil, and the lighter coil reduces the load on the drive system. Thus, the lighter, more compact new VC unit contributes to the lens's overall light weight and compact size. Because the 24-70 mm F/2.8 Di VC USD is a high-speed zoom lens with maximum aperture of F/2.8, its VC system must drive a lens that is larger and heavier than other zooms. Therefore, the shape, size and layout of the drive coils are all designed to obtain sufficient thrust. The result is a full-size, high-speed zoom that provides the same high level of compensation effect.

About the Ultrasonic Motor

In the ultrasonic motor, a piezoelectric element arranged in a ring formation generates ultrasonic vibrations in a metallic ring stator, and the vibration energy is used to rotate a metallic ring rotor that is attached to the stator. The rotation energy is in turn transferred from the metallic ring rotor to operate the focus lens.

I ordered this lens with high hopes; to use as my all-purpose "walk around" lens etc... I was blown away by the IQ, colors, contrast, and VC. Everything about this lens was perfect. Then I started checking out the bokeh in the shots I took in my garden and of kids standing in front of trees with dappled light... and my heart just sank! I had not read the reviews about the "onion bokeh", but it is DEFINITELY there, and for me it was a problem - VERY distracting. I will watch what happens with this lens and will purchase again if this issue is corrected (or if the lens becomes significantly cheaper in the future). For now though, I will have to pass.

I received that lens and was delighted by its dimensions. I was very surprised when trying to disengage the sun hood, it was hard to remove. After one week shooting the problem went worse, I noticed the lens barrel turned by 2mm and broke the inside focus motor. This was due to the fact that the sun hood was of a bad production batch. Its unproper dimensions made it unproper to safely disengage.
I had to return it to the aftersale service, and as a journalist I informed Tamron there was an issue.
The lens was repaired within one week.
I had no more confidence in this lens due to its not sturdy construction.
Tamron wants to play in the PRO yard, but does not build sturdy enough, they have to improve this side.
It is a pitty, as the lens diserves interest, the images shooted are sharp and punchy, but the zone outside of the focus does not propose a nice bokey, it looks like drug pills, not soft at all.
The AFspeed is satisfying also, although a little slower than the Nikon 24-70 and 24-120, the stabiliser is good, stable enough for low speed shooting ar 1/15th sec, and good too for video shooting with a Nikon D8OO. I also have a Tamron 70-200 f2.8 its a good lens and it is sturdy.Very bright and satisfying.
I hope that Tamron is going to better the mechanical part of the 24-7O because the optical part deserves it.

Comments about Tamron SP 24-70mm f/2.8 DI VC USD Lens for Nikon Cameras:

About to depart for several days in Iceland, at the last minute and based on widespread positive reviews, I decided to splurge on this medium zoom for my D700 and am glad I did, the item arriving by overnight UPS the day before I left. For landscapes, the majority of my shots, this lens was great. Given the high ISOs of my camera, I didn't need f2.8, but it's use for occasional intentional bokeh is a nice bonus. The lens feels solidly constructed, so much so that my several consumer grade equivalent focal lengths tend to feel flimsy in comparison. It handles nicely, and I like the snugness of the zoom and focusing rings. Sometimes used in rain more than I wanted, its weather sealing gave me confidence to do so. Image quality appears quite good. The vibration control feature and significantly lower price swayed me away from Nikon's 24-70, and I'm quite pleased with my choice of this SP Tamron. It's now my 'go to' lens.

      lens hood problem

Comments about Tamron SP 24-70mm f/2.8 DI VC USD Lens for Nikon Cameras:

It's a good lens overall on my d610. 2.8 is sharp. However the lens hood is a major issue. I read on some forum before that the hood is so snuggy peopel broke the internal parts when tried to rotate the hood in place. I tried it, and they were right. I cannot get the hood to click into the final position. I need to get a replacement.

I use it on small excursions with a friend, we are both hobbyist and this lens has proved it's worth, especially in lower light situations. Mostly landscapes, waterfalls and a few caves.

Comments about Tamron SP 24-70mm f/2.8 DI VC USD Lens for Nikon Cameras:

I was debating between buying this one and the more expensive Nikon version and after a lot of research, decided to buy the Tamron. A photographer friend of mine told me this was a great piece of glass and I would not be disappointed and he was right! Save some money and buy this lens. I can see this lens being on my camera the majority of the time.

I bought the lens for low light indoor sports photography. But, the 1st time I used it was for a portrait shoot and as an afterthought. I was very pleased with the image quality and boken of the lens. Some reviewers have complained about it's weight, but it balances nicely on my D800 and battery pack.

Comments about Tamron SP 24-70mm f/2.8 DI VC USD Lens for Nikon Cameras:

I had initially decided to skip a mid-range zoom in favor of 35mm, 50mm, and 85mm primes for indoor photography involving family gatherings and my wife's indoor woodwind quintet performances. However, I often could not properly frame my shots with primes because I could not move either close enough to or far enough away from my subject. So I picked up this zoom. I'm impressed by its performance for these indoor events. VC switched on really does give me a 3-stop advantage compared with VC switched off. Its focus is accurate and it is also quick enough for my needs. Finally, I used it at an outdoor mid-day wine festival set in a wooded environment and the reflections from tree leaves resulted in quite noticeable "onion" bokeh. Maybe it's just because others had commented on it and I was looking for it, but once I saw it I couldn't ignore it. Consequently, for scenes that have smallish bright highlights against dark backgrounds I will continue to use prime lenses and my other zooms (Nikkor 18-35mm f/4 and Nikkor 70-200mm f/4). In most other situations, the bokeh transitions are quite smooth.

Comments about Tamron SP 24-70mm f/2.8 DI VC USD Lens for Nikon Cameras:

I still can`t figure out how a tamron lens can do the same things a Nikkor does, reducing those awful blue fringings, adding VR, while at the same time costing a third less. Really, I am blown away, what a bargain. I use it with a Nikon D610 body (24Mp). This lens is incredibly sharp even wide open, with sharpness decreasing for the 50-70mm at f2.8, but still being wonderfully sharp. Contrast is phenomenal, while color is great too.

I had the 24-70 Nikkor until it fell and broke and can tell you I don't miss it at all now. Autofocus is a tad slower (really don't mind that bit), but now I have VR and virtually no chromatic aberrations. If you are thinkin about it, go for it. The famous onion bokeh is really not a problem for me: it appears only on very few occasions with certain lights on the BG. But then, I can easily fix it on Lightroom with blur or de-clarifying tools. I actually love the creamyness of the background in tha majority of my pics.

Other details such as distortion and vignetting are not a problem today. Just a click and LR fixes it with its lens profiles. Would definitely recommend to pro photographers. For Dx shooters there are obviously better choices. For Fx, I think this is the must have until Nikon comes out with a new 24-70 without those terrible CAs, and with VR. But then, will it cost 3K? better get this lens!

Comments about Tamron SP 24-70mm f/2.8 DI VC USD Lens for Nikon Cameras:

I'm not a pro, just a serious amateur. I'm using the Tamron 24-70 with a Nikon D800. For years I had been shooting with a D700 with Nikon's 24-120 f/4. I had upgraded to the D800, but really was never very happy with the 24-120. I replaced the Nikon 24-120 with Tamron's 24-70 and 70-200. I couldn't be happier.

I *really* like the image stabilization on the 24-70. I shoot indoors a great deal and am not a big fan of flash -- like to take advantage of natural light. Having IS on a standard zoom is probably my favorite feature.

I also find the lens to be very sharp. In fact, the quality of the photos of the Tamron 24-70 is so much better than my Nikon 24-120 that, in hind sight, I'm thinking there was a problem (e.g. front- or back-focus issue) with the Nikon 24-120. Putting the Tamron 24-70 on my D800 brought out the sharpness that I felt should have been there all along, but had no basis for comparison.

My *only* complaint -- same as some other reviews -- the lens hood fits *very* tight. I have adopted a special way of putting it on and taking it off so as not to twist the lens. It has become a little easier over time, but it still quite a snug fit.

Great lense. Would like to see the outter housing more like Nikon though.

Comments about Tamron SP 24-70mm f/2.8 DI VC USD Lens for Nikon Cameras:

This lens has the image quality that I was looking for with the fast high end lens, and the V/C, (Vibration Control), Which gives me an extra two stops before you need a tripod; a lot of opportunities to take handheld shots. Also, I could not beat the $[$]savings compared to the Nikon.

I was considering buying the Nikon version of this lens and I am glad that I saved the money I did. This lens is SHARP. I've been shooting with it since I got it and have found the images to be extremely detailed and I love the color rendition. It does, as has been reviewed, have an issue with vignette wide open but who cares? I add a vignette in LR anyways! The VC has also proven to be very useful for video and it works as advertised.

I'm an intermediate photographer investing in this beautiful piece of glass. Every photo I've taken has been extremely sharp. Low light shooting is also flawless with this lens. The only thing I've found "not so great" about it is that i'm not used to telephoto lenses weight. Other than that, I'm completely pleased with this lens!

Comments about Tamron SP 24-70mm f/2.8 DI VC USD Lens for Nikon Cameras:

Within two weeks this lens became my new favorite. At 24mm it's wide enough to cover my needs as a wedding and portrait photographer and 70mm is right on for head shots. It's the Vibration Compensation that makes this lens. Through the viewfinder you can actually see the lens locking on. I was able to shoot at 70mm 2.8 and at 1/30th of a second and still get tack sharp images. While I hear that the Canon and Nikon version has a slightly faster autofocus, I still find this lens incredibly fast. Faster than all my others. This lens will live on my D800 the majority of the time.

The only con is the lens cap is a little hard to put on because there isn't much in the way of traction or grip for you to pinch - no biggie though.

Vibration reduction is a huge plus on this lens. Have been able hand hold shots as slow as 1/20 sec. and still have photos in focus. I have used Nikon's 24-70 for about a year and decided to get this Tamron lens as backup. I have not found the focus speed to be all that different in the real world compared to Nikon's lens. Excellent lens for the cost. Images are sharp!
