The Photoshop Lightroom 4 Software For Mac And Windows (Boxed Full Version) from Adobe is a complete photo management and editing suite for Mac OS X and Windows. Ideal for enthusiasts and professionals alike, Lightroom takes a nondestructive approach to photo editing, leaving the original files unmolested. All your adjustments and edits are stored in a database and applied to an image on the fly, so that you'll always be able to go back to the original image. This enables you to execute as many post-processing adjustments on a photo as you'd like, without making permanent changes to the original image.
Lightroom also serves as a powerful organizational tool for your photographs. Organize photos to suit your needs via an intuitive folder-based data structure. Lightroom lets you store images on multiple storage devices, and it stores low-resolution previews of each image in its central database, allowing you to browse photos even when the original files are offline. You'll be able to search your images based on any number of criteria, accelerating the process of locating a specific image.
Lightroom's interface is divided into five major components: Library, Develop, Slideshow, Print, and Web. Each screen serves its own purpose, and you can go back and forth between them easily. There is some overlap in functionality, but for the most part, the components are compartmentalized.
The Library screen is where you organize and browse your photos. Enjoy full access to all folders in your library from this screen, allowing you to reorganize as needed. Apply keywords, ratings, color labels, and metadata additions to images. You can make custom searches to create "Collections" based on any of these criteria. The "Smart Collections" function updates on the fly as additional images meet your criteria. For example, you can have an up-to-date collection of all images that you've given a 5-star rating. There is also a "Quick Develop" panel allowing you to make minor adjustments to an image, without having to venture into the Develop screen.
The Library also serves as the gateway to import and export images. Clicking "Import" brings up a redesigned screen: The Import window now expands to fill your entire display. Browse through your hard drive or a memory card to find images for import. You can leave the images in their original location, copy or move to a different folder, or copy and convert them to Adobe's DNG format. Apply Develop settings, add metadata, and add keywords during import, such as one for the camera used to capture the photos. Rename files and save a second copy to a backup drive during import.
When you've finished editing, use the Library screen to export your photos with ease. You can use the "Export" function, which brings up a window with numerous settings -- including image size, sharpening, file format, and the like -- that you can customize. There is a new "Publish Services" section, enabling you to send images to your hard drive or Flickr with ease. Create as many presets for Publish Services as you'd like, giving you one-click access to frequently used export operations. This section can be further expanded via third-party plug-ins, available from Adobe's Lightroom Exchange website.
The second major component of Lightroom is the Develop screen. This is where you'll do the vast majority of your photo editing and toning. Perform any adjustment imaginable here, including color temperature, exposure, black levels, contrast, sharpness, and brightness, to name just a few. You can make adjustments via sliders or tone curves, discretely modify color channels, and convert images to black and white. Numerous presets are available, allowing you to quickly apply a certain "look" to a photo, and you can create your own presets based on your favorite settings.
The Develop screen also features useful History and Snapshot functions. History lets you browse through all of the adjustments you've made to an image, in the order that they were made, so that you can revert back to any stage in the image process. At any time, create a Snapshot of an image, which saves all of the settings you've applied, allowing you to continue to experiment with a photo after you've found a look you like.
Remove dust spots and red eye from photos, thanks to Lightroom's spot editing tools. Create image masks to apply graduated filter adjustments to a photo, or use the brush tool to dodge, burn, and make other spot adjustments. You can add vignettes and simulated film grain to images, great for breathing analog life into digital photos.
With distortion correction, "defishing" of images captured via fisheye lenses can be done from within the program. Correct for both fisheye and rectilinear distortion, a capability highly useful for those shooting with extreme wide angle lenses. Numerous lens profiles are included with the software, and you can save your own presets for oft-used lenses.
Lens corrections can also eliminate the keystone effect that ensues when your camera is not straight-on a subject. Basic crop and rotation tools are also available for quick and easy adjustments. If there is anything that can't be handled by Lightroom, it's easy to export a photo to Photoshop CS4 or CS5 for editing; any changes you make to an image in Photoshop will be automatically reflected in Lightroom.
Lightroom's other three screens are all about sharing your images. The Slideshow screen gives you all the tools necessary to create digital slideshows of your images, complete with transitions and music. View these from within Lightroom or export them to a PDF or video file to share.
The Print screen allows you to print your images in any way imaginable. Adjustable for many standard paper sizes, it lets you visually lay out photos on them, allowing you to maximize the number of photos on a single page -- thus helping to reduce printing costs. Lightroom can automatically position photos so that space on a page will be used as efficiently as possible. Adjust prints for different paper types and color profiles, and add a signature plate if you wish.
The Web screen gives you numerous means of outputting photos to the web. Adobe includes a number of HTML and Flash galleries, allowing you to create a web gallery without any knowledge of programming. These can be customized to suit your needs, and third-party galleries are available via the Adobe Lightroom Exchange website.
Top new features in Lightroom 4 include: Highlight and shadow recovery, photo book creation, location-based photo organization, extended video support, white balance brush and additional editing brushes, video publishing, soft proofing, improved online sharing integration, emailing from Lightroom, and importing libraries from other software.
Lightroom is sold as multiplatform software, which means it can be installed on either Mac OS X or Windows. It's compatible with Mac OS X v10.6.8, 10.7 or 10.8, as well as Windows Vista with Service Pack 2, Windows 7 with Service Pack 1, and Windows 8.
The purchase of this software entitles you to free downloadable updates to Lightroom 4.1-4.4 and all subsequent versions of Lightroom 4.

I am highly impressed with Lightroom 4, the new features, as well as the improvements to features from previous versions, are amazing. LR4 has increased my work flow (even over what LR3 could) and made my life much easier when working with photos by the thousands.
I also rarely have any reason to go into photoshop anymore when working with photos.
I would recommend LR4 to anyone who works with large quantities of photos, whether a professional or just a hobbyist.
I would also recommend watching some of the informative videos online that cover the new features and improvements to LR4 to understand just what kind of potential LR4 has. Especially if you have never used any Lightroom program before.
While it's not really a con. I would recommend having a computer with a faster processor (quad-core as an example). Lightroom 4 is heavier on rendering resources and may run much slower than LR3 on some older computers. Any of my older computers take a while to do anything in LR4, even to move a slider. There are a lot of resources online to make sure your computer will be able to run LR4 smoothly.
I put my basic system info below and I have absolutely no problems running LR4:
Intel i7-3770 @ 3.40 GHz
12GB RAM
64-bit Win 7
This doesn't mean it wont run on "slower" computers, just that you may have different results than the next guy, depending on what specific hardware is in your computer.
So do a little research, even if you are just thinking of upgrading from LR3. Just to make sure your system is within the parameters for the best performance.

I tried LR 1 years ago and dumped it, because of its absurdly poor file handling. Now I bought LR4, figuring that file handling will be much improved. Nope. The problem: if you ever move, rename, edit or in any other way touch your digital images in any program EXCEPT LR -- including PHotoshop -- its dumb file handling will fail to find the file. You MUST use ONLY LR for file handling, or else. If you use anything else on your files -- and I do all day long -- you MUST re-instruct LR's dumb file system that the file even exists, and this or that has been done to it, or it may as well have been deleted. Meanwhile, every other program I have, including Photoshop CS5, Bridge, Picassa, Windows Explorer, and even Faststone have no such problem. If Adobe's own CS5 and Bridge have smart file recognition, why not LR? Also, LR is sloowww. I have an image collection of over 52,000 files, and LR drags when moving around directories. Even worse: when I put a group of images from LR into CS5, it's like watching mud flow, and even slower going back to LR, despite my new high end dual-proc digital workstation. Bridge, meanwhile, is quick like a bunny, and easy to use. Bottom line: I regret having purchased LR again, but I am now a wiser man.

Comments about Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 4 Software For Mac And Windows (Boxed Full Version):
Received with a new iMac and both are performing well. Not as intuitive as it could be for those of us who are a bit less technically astute but those challenges are easily overcome. Experienced a bit of confusion with importing photos but the "Crash Course" that came with it made short work of that. It lacks any form of erasure for eliminating things like phone lines that may mare your landscape and that is disappointing but I now have over 800 photos imported and organized and the flow with no complaints and the software is operating as advertised.

While I will be the first to admit that I am still very much new to LR4 , and photo editing in general for that matter, LR has been fairly easy to use after I have messed with it a few times. Didn't realize there was not a layering or stacking feature ( or at least I haven't found it yet and from what I've seen & read it does not have it ) but other than that I am very happy with the purchase so far.

So far I have had the opportunity to review the software and start to familiarize myself with it. It seems powerful but not so intuitive. It turns out that the Kelby tutorial that is bundled by B&H with LR4 really explains how to get started. So LR4 is very good, but the Kelby tutorial makes it easier to use. Once you see the videos, the UI becomes easier to understand. I hope to be able to stop using PSE once I can master LR4.

Comments about Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 4 Software For Mac And Windows (Boxed Full Version):
Having used simpler photo editing tools on Jpegs for about ten years, I thought I'd try moving up to Lightroom 4. I had been told that its more sophisticated tools and RAW conversion abilities would allow me to do more with my images. I looked at Elements, but thought it might be too basic; and Photoshop seemed like it might be too complex for my needs. It turns out that Lightroom 4 is also too complex for my needs and too complex for me. It is definitely not for beginners. I did purchase the Martin Evening "The Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 4 Book" to assist me, but found the first 150 pages were on cataloging and organization of photos on a very sophisticated level. I also tapped into the Lightroom 4 tutorials on YouTube. Even with the extra help, I find Lightroom 4 is too much program for me to handle. The learning curve is very steep. It seems to me that Lightroom 4 is designed for pros to organize their workflow. It may be an excellent tool, if you are on that level already. I wish Adobe would create an intermediate photo editing tool between basic and professional. I'll struggle a bit further with Lightroom 4, but I think I'll probably wind up going back to Jpegs.
