The Photoshop Lightroom 4 Software Upgrade For Mac And Windows from Adobe is a complete photo management and editing suite for Mac OS X and Windows. Ideal for enthusiasts and professionals alike, Lightroom takes a nondestructive approach to photo editing, leaving the original files unmolested. All your adjustments and edits are stored in a database and applied to an image on the fly, so that you'll always be able to go back to the original image. This enables you to execute as many post-processing adjustments on a photo as you'd like, without making permanent changes to the original image.
Lightroom also serves as a powerful organizational tool for your photographs. Organize photos to suit your needs via an intuitive folder-based data structure. Lightroom lets you store images on multiple storage devices, and it stores low-resolution previews of each image in its central database, allowing you to browse photos even when the original files are offline. You'll be able to search your images based on any number of criteria, accelerating the process of locating a specific image.
Lightroom's interface is divided into five major components: Library, Develop, Slideshow, Print, and Web. Each screen serves its own purpose, and you can go back and forth between them easily. There is some overlap in functionality, but for the most part, the components are compartmentalized.
The Library screen is where you organize and browse your photos. Enjoy full access to all folders in your library from this screen, allowing you to reorganize as needed. Apply keywords, ratings, color labels, and metadata additions to images. You can make custom searches to create "Collections" based on any of these criteria. The "Smart Collections" function updates on the fly as additional images meet your criteria. For example, you can have an up-to-date collection of all images that you've given a 5-star rating. There is also a "Quick Develop" panel allowing you to make minor adjustments to an image, without having to venture into the Develop screen.
The Library also serves as the gateway to import and export images. Clicking "Import" brings up a redesigned screen: The Import window now expands to fill your entire display. Browse through your hard drive or a memory card to find images for import. You can leave the images in their original location, copying or moving to a different folder, or copy and convert them to Adobe's DNG format. Apply Develop settings, add metadata, and add keywords during import, such as one for the camera used to capture the photos. Rename files and save a second copy to a backup drive during import.
When you've finished editing, use the Library screen to export your photos with ease. You can use the "Export" function, which brings up a window with numerous settings -- including image size, sharpening, file format, and the like -- that you can customize. There is a new "Publish Services" section, enabling you to send images to your hard drive or Flickr with ease. Create as many presets for Publish Services as you'd like, giving you one-click access to frequently used export operations. This section can be further expanded via third-party plug-ins, available from Adobe's Lightroom Exchange website.
The second major component of Lightroom is the Develop screen. This is where you'll do the vast majority of your photo editing and toning. Perform any adjustment imaginable here, including color temperature, exposure, black levels, contrast, sharpness, and brightness, to name just a few. You can make adjustments via sliders or tone curves, discretely modify color channels, and convert images to black and white. Numerous presets are available, allowing you to quickly apply a certain "look" to a photo, and you can create your own presets based on your favorite settings.
The Develop screen also features useful History and Snapshot functions. History lets you browse through all of the adjustments you've made to an image, in the order that they were made, so that you can revert back to any stage in the image process. At any time, create a Snapshot of an image, which saves all of the settings you've applied, allowing you to continue to experiment with a photo after you've found a look you like.
Remove dust spots and red eye from photos, thanks to Lightroom's spot editing tools. Create image masks to apply graduated filter adjustments to a photo, or use the brush tool to dodge, burn, and make other spot adjustments. You can add vignettes and simulated film grain to images, great for breathing analog life into digital photos.
With distortion correction, "defishing" of images captured via fisheye lenses can be done from within the program. Correct for both fisheye and rectilinear distortion, a capability highly useful for those shooting with extreme wide angle lenses. Numerous lens profiles are included with the software, and you can save your own presets for oft-used lenses.
Lens corrections can also eliminate the keystone effect that ensues when your camera is not straight-on a subject. Basic crop and rotation tools are also available for quick and easy adjustments. If there is anything that can't be handled by Lightroom, it's easy to export a photo to Photoshop CS4 or CS5 for editing; any changes you make to an image in Photoshop will be automatically reflected in Lightroom.
Lightroom's other three screens are all about sharing your images. The Slideshow screen gives you all the tools necessary to create digital slideshows of your images, complete with transitions and music. View these from within Lightroom or export them to a PDF or video file to share.
The Print screen allows you to print your images in any way imaginable. Adjustable for many standard paper sizes, it lets you visually lay out photos on them, allowing you to maximize the number of photos on a single page -- thus helping to reduce printing costs. Lightroom can automatically position photos so that space on a page will be used as efficiently as possible. Adjust prints for different paper types and color profiles, and add a signature plate if you wish.
The Web screen gives you numerous means of outputting photos to the web. Adobe includes a number of HTML and Flash galleries, allowing you to create a web gallery without any knowledge of programming. These can be customized to suit your needs, and third-party galleries are available via the Adobe Lightroom Exchange website.
Top new features in Lightroom 4 include: Highlight and shadow recovery, photo book creation, location-based photo organization, extended video support, white balance brush and additional editing brushes, video publishing, soft proofing, improved online sharing integration, emailing from Lightroom, and importing libraries from other software.
To be eligible for this upgrade, you must currently own a previous version of Photoshop Lightroom: 1, 2 or 3.
Lightroom is sold as multiplatform software, which means it can be installed on either Mac OS X or Windows. It's compatible with Mac OS X v10.6.8, 10.7 and 10.8, as well as Microsoft Windows Vista with Service Pack 2, Windows 7 with Service Pack 1, and Windows 8.
The purchase of this software entitles you to free downloadable updates to Lightroom 4.1-4.4 and all subsequent versions of Lightroom 4.

I am not a geek so any upgrades to software and hardware can be stressful just thinking about starting the process let alone actually doing it. My upgrade arrived in the usual quick efficient way (I live in Australia - B&H is quicker than AU Post!). The pretty box sat beside my desk for a week before I had the nerve to open it up and start the process. To my delight it was quick and easy. The whole migration process was uneventful, to my delight. I did my first import into LR4, thinking I would have to keep LR3 around in the event I got lost. I have not gone back to LR3 yet. I shoot everyday so importing occures consistently.
I am thrilled with the upgrades. It's amazing how much more powerful the tools feel. The develop modual has a lovely intutive feel now. From slider bars that move intuitively to being liberated from just "Blacks" to black and white. I also love that the 'recovery' tool was removed and replaced with a more intuitive and intelligent (learning) method of editing. The gradient tool is on steroids! It's fantastic.
I only wish I had not taken so long to do the upgrade from when it was first announced, even in Beta!
I don't have GPS in my dslr at this point so unfortunatley, the fantastic MAP module will have to wait.
The only 'con' I have is more of a growing pain. The migration of already edited images from LR3 to LR4 is 'was' at first a bit dramatic and scary for me. The thought of having to re-edit hundred's of gigs of images is daunting and obviously will not happen. I can wrap my head around 'why' only because it tells me just how different this upgrade is, without having a clue, technically speaking, what all that entails, except the outcomes. I love the outcomes so far - so forward I go.Cheers and happy shooting!

Thankfully I am not a professional photographer as version 4 of Lightroom is really slow! I did not have a problem with version 3, and am certainly not alone with this problem in V4. I have tried several of the user "remedies" for the slowness. None seem to really correct the problem. I'm waiting for Adobe to announce a fix or come out with an update.
It would be much faster for me to open each photo in Photoshop and edit it than it would to use Lightroom 4, but I would prefer Lightroom because of the other advantages it offers and use Photoshop only when necessary.
Some users of LR4 are not experiencing the slowness but there are many who are. If you have version 3 I would stick with it until Adobe has corrected the problem.

Comments about Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 4 Software Upgrade For Mac And Windows:
Having used Lightroom 3 for several years - a program I love - I upgraded to version 4 and believe it was a waste of money. Lightroom 4 appears to be more consumer/amateur oriented with a silly group of "app-type" filters. I could no longer classify it was a professional photography program. The power of Lightroom 3 through its controls is gone, replaced by seeming illogical sliders that lack intuitiveness. My recommendation is to avoid the Lightroom 4 upgrade.

Having used Lightroom 3 for several years, I bought the upgrade to Lightroom 4 and regret my waste of money. Lightroom 4 seems less professional and more consumer app focused, offering a group of largely amateurish filters, in my opinion. The wonderful intuitiveness of Lightroom 3 controls are gone. Of greatest concern is that the power offered Lightroom 3 to edit images seems diminished by the upgrade. My recommendation is to avoid Lightroom 4, an Adobe mistake.

Easy to install and keeps your photos where you left them in 3. I do like how they have improved
the Develop module. My biggest complaints are that it's overpriced for what you get for an upgrade and if you own certain new cameras you have no choice because 3 will not download your raw files.

I have Lightroom 3 and CS5. I purchased a new camera and found out that the raw format isn't supported in CS5 and you have to convert to dng. It's rather annoying to have to convert every picture to dng so I upgraded Lightroom when I found out that it would handle my raw pictures without conversion. It has almost as much functionality as CS5 and I if I need the extra capabilities then I will convert the 1 picture to dng. Very disappointed in the direction Adobe is taking with their products. They are pushing everyone towards subscription based products which is rather expensive for non-pro photographers. I was going to wait and upgrade to Lightroom 5 when it came out but guess what, you can only upgrade from Lightroom 4 not Lightroom 3. Thanks Adobe. Of course, buying from B+H was a breeze as always.

I was upset when LR4 was released at half the price of LR3, and that it would cost me even more to upgrade. I got over it purchased the upgrade. It feels like LR3 was a beta version. Get it if you didin't already. I'm just hoping Adobe doesn't release LR5 next year and expect me to upgrade again.
Great software. Probably the best post-processing and photo management software.

Comments about Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 4 Software Upgrade For Mac And Windows:
I have followed Lightroom since its inception. The people at Adobe could have rested on the laurels of Photoshop since many of us were using it by default. Instead, they continued to retool Lightroom until they got the right combination of features and performance such as to allow the program to reach its full potential. The adjustment brush is the crown jewel of Lightroom. That alone makes it worth five stars but when you consider the shadows and highlights recovery tools now we are talking about taking the program to the next level.
After using the trial version for only two weeks, I totally revamped my workflow to place more of an emphasis on Lightroom. Now I do all my heavy lifting with Lightroom and only use Photoshop for things like smart objects and the occasional layers. My current workflow is approximately 85% to 90% Lightroom and the remainder Photoshop. The only reason my Photoshop percentage is so high is because, I use my plugins in Photoshop as smart objects.
Prior to purchasing Lightroom 4, I read some of the comments made by other reviewers and I will just say two things: first, the current release is 4.4 and my understanding is that the bugs have been fixed and second, even if Adobe had not fixed the bugs, the performance of Lightroom 4 is otherwise so good that whatever time that you think that you are losing because the program is slow you more than gain back in efficiency in other areas.
Simply put, it is the best product of its kind on the market.
