I wanted a 3D Bluray player with connectivity to Video On-Demand and Prime, as well as Netflix. One of my pet peeves with Bluray is how long it takes a player to load main menu. This player is blazingly fast. Instead of the usual 30 to 45 seconds it used to take, it now takes 5 seconds. The other thing I love about this player are the menu aesthetics. The design is sleek and responsive. The built-in wifi works great. And, since I have a DSD-compatible receiver, support for SACD rounds things of very nicely. For me, this player is the new bar of quality for all my future players! My only warning is this: make sure to turn off the 'BD Mix' option as it prevents the unaltered sound bitstream to go through. This unit has tremendous value for what you're getting. Excellent DVD upscaling and its fast. It streams just about everything I throw at it. The picture quality is better than my ps3 or older Sony blu ray player. The only negative is that the motor has a very high pitch whine and if your couch is close to the player you'll hear it. My family actually preferred to use the ps3 because of that.

I used this BDP-S790 with Sony "Bravia TV" and control with "Bravia app" on Windows phone8. Make my life easy and I am really satisfied with picture and sound quality even original remote. Steaming movie from Netflix was fast thanks for the dual core processor. Turning on or off was fast. Set up manual was easy to understand and use. I am going to buy Sony ES receiver for making my life easy too. I always want entertaining products to be really easy to use because I want just watch a TV.

Comments about Sony BDP-S790 4K and 3D Blu-ray Disc Player:
The player was very easy to set up and connect to WiFi. Load speed is excellent (it takes 5-6 sec to load 3D disk).
The only thing is that that some web site require latest Flash player and seems like Sony hasn't released the latest firmware to support it.
Excellent addition to my 65 Lg 3d tv, 7.1 Cerwin Vega and Onkyo 717 set up.
Player was not available in Canada, so I had to order it from States.
Very happy with the purchase.

Comments about Sony BDP-S790 4K and 3D Blu-ray Disc Player:
Just a followup to my earlier review, where I noted some odd problems, including a tracking problem on a DVD and a lack of responsiveness to the remote after playing a Bluray for about 30 minutes.
As expected, these issues appear to have been firmware-related. With the latest firmware, 0460, behavior of the 790 has been perfect.
I still don't love the soft-touch buttons, and I still want the typical Sony time countdown feature in this product. These things have faded into the background, however: The product's just too good.
I've watched a few dozen Blurays by this point, and performance here is great.
I've watched additional DVDs as well. More importantly, I've made sure the unit is configured with all player-side image processing enhancements turned off. I'll say it again: Absolutely the best DVD playback of any device I've ever seen, bar none. Good DVD transfers are sometimes better-looking than weak Blurays.
Also, the Netflix app on the player is much better than the one on my HX929. Bigger artwork, great search interface, cool browsing for multi-episode programs and -- perhaps most importantly -- noticeably better image quality. I wouldn't say it's a gigantic difference, but it was definitely obvious.
This thing's a classic. If it was region-free and could convert PAL, it'd be perfect. For those buying all their discs in North America, image quality and UI get no better.

Comments about Sony BDP-S790 4K and 3D Blu-ray Disc Player:
I bought this player as an upgrade over a BDP-S360. My main goals were to get a faster unit and better image quality (especially on DVDs, where reviews have suggested this player is one of the best available).
I'm very satisfied with the product's performance in these areas. Speed is great -- as fast or faster than the PS3 or similarly quick players. While bringing up a BD is not quite as fast as a DVD on my older player, it's very quick.
On image quality, it's spectacular. BDs look great, and I'd even say a bit better than my old player, though maybe I'm fooling myself here :). On DVDs, there is absolutely no question that this player is a huge improvement, and the best DVD upscaling solution I've ever seen. Better DVD transfers look so close to Blu Ray that it's amazing -- on some scenes, you'd swear it was Blu Ray. The fact that it can do 24p for DVD makes it that much better.
I really like movies, and am going Blu Ray on everything. With studios not always helping me out, I suddenly have a way to watch DVD-only movies and be sure that I'm seeing them as best as I can.
The streaming capabilities are very complete and the streaming itself looks great. While the interface is more complete and better-looking that my TV (a late 2011 Sony XBR-HX929), bringing up that interface is a bit slower, say by 5-8 seconds or so for NetFlix & SEN.
An advantage for streaming is that the player supports USB keyboards (for entering search terms), and I can augment the Home Theater review and tell you that they work on both the front and back ports. Since there's no BDLive memory, I wil llikely add a 1GB flash drive in the future, so I'm hoping I can put a USB hub in the back and keep away from having something sticking out the front.
One issue with USB keybaord support is that pretty much only the letter keys are recognized in most of the player's UI. It would be great if the UI could deal with cursor keys, PgUp & PgDown, Enter (or a mouse button press) and similar. As it is, you're on the remote, then the keyboard, then back again, and it's not great.
Cursor keys are recognized in some apps. For example the Bubbles game lets you move around using a keyboard. Problem is, there isn't a key I've found that lets you invoke an action, so you have to stick with the remote to play.
The UI is good-looking, but it's a bit too much color over the older UIs. Not gaudy, but busier. One thing they should have kept was the older player's "staged fade" between screens -- it made things look much more high-end.
Most of my use was with firmware 0443 (August release), though I just received 0460 (December release).
I've seen three problems with the device. The first two I expect were/are firmware related (version 0443):
- One DVD (West Wing, Season 7, Disc 42 in the Complete Series pack), while playing, occasionally causes the player to "mistrack". Signal breaks up, and eventually you get the grinding sound of a player not able to lock on properly. I might expect this from a scratched disk, there was absolutely zero issues with the disk surface here.
- While playing a BD (Thunderball, part of the Bond 50 collection), about 30 minutes in the device stopped responding to IR commands. Top panel buttons still worked. Had to unplug to sort it out. It wasn't the remote (I have three, and tried them all).
One more, likely not firmware-related, was a DVD with a mixed video-and-film program that started out with some high-contrast images. The player appeared to be get the cadence wrong for two shorts scenes (motion judder), but it cleaned up afterwards.
I don't really like the soft-touch buttons, but they do work. I wish the power button also lit up like the other three.
Unlike past Sony players, you can't set the time display to count backwards. However, the status display does show both the current time and the total time together, giving back most of the convenience here.
While the thing has a fan, it's very quiet. You can hear it in a quiet room if you're a foot or so away. Otherwise you won't hear anything.
Built-in Wifi is very good for a player, at least in my experience. Network connection at startup is very fast, probably twice as fast as my TV.
I am a bit concerned over the two items I attribute to firmware above, but if they're truly firmware, I'm not. It's not great that consumers are guinea pigs on this stuff, but I expect these things will get fixed. I bought from B&H late enough to have until Jan 18 to return, though, so that gives me time to find out if there's truly a problem.
Definitely read other forums regarding more esoteric playback items ike SACDs, recordable media, and similar. Others have had problems, and some items could get in your way, too.
Overall, I'm really happy with this purchase. Since I can't get the product via retail in Canada, B&H's price and ability to handle all the cross-border issues up-front is a big win for me.

I use this player to watch DVDs, stream internet content, and listen to my CDs. The quality of SOUND reproduction is a critical issue for me when selecting any home entertainment equipment. I am astonished with the sound quality this unit provides, especially considering the relatively low price. I considered trying the top-end Panasonic, which some people believe sounds even better, but I was so happy when I tested this product that I didn't bother. Comments about Sony BDP-S790 4K and 3D Blu-ray Disc Player:
I bought this bluray player because it was new and looked like the best one on the market. I tend to buy the best and keep things for a while. I am really, really disappointed. Yes, you can go to youtube, but you cannot find all the parts of a show easily like you can on a computer. It does get you crackle, but I am too busy to watch really old, bad TV shows. Yes, you can use netflicks, but nothing on this device is as easy to use as my laptop. Nothing on this device is better than my laptop, except having a remote. Buy a wireless keyboard instead. We still hook up my laptop to the TV rather than use the bluray player for any internet use. It is so slow that we just get the laptop out and plug it in. We have read the owner's manual. We have added all the "features." It is just not worth using if you have an alternative. I suggest you buy a cheap bluray player, a laptop, and a wireless keyboard.

This blueray player does not support advanced network configurations. My DHCP server was configured to use a subnet mask of 255.255.255.224. This blueray player after receiving valid IP configuration settings was unable to communicate with the internet until my DHCP server was reconfigured to host a standard class C subnet mask. 255.255.255.0 This problem has existed since I purchased this blueray pleyer almost a year ago and after several firmware updates.

Excellent replacement for my previous Sony BDP-S350. Much faster loading time of Blu-Ray discs and added internet streaming capability. First of all, if you haven't purchased a blu-ray player in a few years...You'll be impressed with the amount of online sources that this can pull from. I used a hardwired connection, and it worked well. If you've ever owned a Sony Blu-ray player, you will be familiar with the look and feel. Overall the only downsides relate to 2 things...1. The UI while improved, is still not as fast as I'd like. 2. The audio quality over analog connections is good, but could be better. I do enjoy the product, and overall it met my expectations.

Picture quality output is the best my older Sony LCD can display. Added HDMI audio output directly to my Sony Home Entertainment system provides even better surround sound quality. I now use both paid and free internet streaming. B&H Photo Video even price matched lower competitor price after it was ordered and in shipment. Excellent customer service.

This new Sonyis an engineering triumph and a breakthrough for DVD upconversion. Better quality DVDs look like Blu-Rays whenupconverted to 1080P.
The 4K processing is well applied and looks like
a great improvement over the OPPO 93 on the 120 inch screen

Comments about Sony BDP-S790 4K and 3D Blu-ray Disc Player:
Once turned off, the upstream equipment gets the real DTS-HD Master Audio and DSD streams like it should.
