This is an excellent recorder! I don't know why it doesn't seem to be all that popular. Most who use it will sing it's praises.

Low-noise preamps. Better than the Tascams and Zooms that it is kind of completing with. Very solid metal build and mechanical switches for almost everything you need. It really is in a different league than those other devices. Don't let the fact that it comes with a screw-in mount for your DSLR deter you. It's built like a proline device.

I see a few people in the reviews complaining that it has three channel inputs, but only two recording tracks. Well, this may seem a bit foreign to the DSLR shooters out there who got their feet wet with an H4n or the like. But if you come from the professional sound-for-picture side of things - it's a very common arrangement. Usually you'll put the boom on channel one recording to track one, and put two lapels into channels two and three and mix them to track two. There are a few other common arrangements for this setup too. It covers you for most basic dialog scenarios. Have you checked out the Sound Devices 302? It's a high-end 3 channel mixer - and guess what it does? Mixes down to two.

In fact, we will often pair this recorder with a Sound Devices 302. Works beautifully.

Another nice feature about this recorder is that it can be powered externally from 9-24v. This makes it great for an audio bag.

Much lower price than it's initial release. No doubt due to that fact that it simply didn't seem to gain much traction - oh well, bonus for us right?

I just bought this unit for an educational film series. I'm recording 2 lavs and a boom. It's great that you can control 3 channels independently live but what I don't like is that it doesn't save as 3 separate channels. It exports 1 stereo .wav of all 3 channels combined so individual channel post production manipulation is almost impossible. Perfect for 2 channels though! You can set one mic to left and the other to right and process accordingly afterwards.

Comments about Fostex DC-R302 3-Channel Audio Mixer and Stereo Recorder:

From the reviews, I really thought this would be a great solution for me. I've owned or used multiple Zoom and Tascam recorders as well as field mixers by Shure, Sound Devices and Azden. This Fostex seemed like it would combine the best of a mixer and recorder into one unit. Unfortunately it is just mediocre at both. It's missing display information such as file name, record time, and battery life common on other recorders. On the mixer side, it handled phantom and powered mics fine. It wasn't to the quality of a Shure or Sound Devices but it also wasn't that much better than digital preamps in a Zoom or Tascam. In the end it's just OK, and not worth its $[$]price point.

Comments about Fostex DC-R302 3-Channel Audio Mixer and Stereo Recorder:

Have had it a couple of weeks and used it in a shoot after minimal familiarization. Sound is VERY clean!Used it for a voice-over into Premiere and it worked easily to acquire the PC and work as a midi.Takes you to a pro level for fraction of the cost and is practical for double system use with DSLRs or any camera that doesn't have quality audio. Also great for adding another 2-3 mics to a shoot.A bit larger than the usual Zoom type unit, but well worth the extra weight. Well built and has secure click-in XLR connectors.Love the 3 beeps at front and end to sink with. Wish there were a way to hear it better when one of the cameras is not connected. Also, would be great to hook up a way to flash the start, but this may be disruptive on most shoots. Still would be great to eliminate the slate. Like the clip naming: (scene name)+auto incremented. Easy to sink video and sound with the beeps and if you're careful to stop camera and recorder in short order. One problem with the cheap stuff is the inability to change gain or volume during a take (Zooms and other such units have very noisy digital pots that cannot be adjusted during a take). Not the case with this unit. So, this fills a gap between cheap units and $ entry level pro Sound Devices units. For $2-300 you have pro sounding sound. Why is this unit not better known? Thanks to the B&H guys who recommended it. Apparently many pros buy these as a backup and are amazed by the quality.PS. when you read reviews you will read scary stuff that was corrected right after the unit came out. There are no such problems now.

Comments about Fostex DC-R302 3-Channel Audio Mixer and Stereo Recorder:

Even though this Fostex Mixer/Recorder costs a bit more than other audio recorders, it's much more useful for video production then other recorders from Zoom, Tascam or the others. No, it does not have the myriad of features that the other recorders have, but that's also it's strongest attribute. When I'm working audio on my day job, I'm used to using equipment from Sound Devices. I was cautious buying the DC-R302 simply because I've been spoiled using the Sound Devices equipment but for the price, I'm pleasantly surprised with the Fostex. Recording audio from a line level sources is clean as a whistle. Mic level inputs are just as good on low gain, mid gain introduces a noticable yet acceptable noise. On it's highest gain setting, there is too much noise introduced to be considered acceptable however. If I were to make a comparison, the noise floor on the Fostex with it's low gain setting is astoundingly better then a Zoom H4n or Tascam DR-40 and is comparable with the Tascam or Zoom on it's mid gain setting.I didn't realize just how small this mixer was until I unboxed it and that's not a bad thing. With it's size, it fits very well riding underneath an SLR with the included camera bracket. Additionally, the Fostex SC-302 carry case that was included is much better then I was expecting. It's not fancy and nowhere near the build quality as a Porta Brace bag, but it's functional and serves it's purpose well. The only ding that I would throw at this mixer is it's menu system. It's not very intuitive, but in all fairness there aren't too many options that can be adjusted anyways. Basically, I set the date/time setting once using the manual but I was stumped when it came time to do it again without. On the flip side, when it comes to actually operating this thing, it's much, much easier to hand this off to a new user then a handheld recorder. All the controls you need are at your fingertips and not buried in a menu system. WYSIWYGThis is a mixer that I would definitely buy again. It's the only true mixer I've seen at this price point that integrates an audio recorder. If you've ever worked as a boom pole operator before, you know how important it is to have the controls at your fingertips without any fumbling. I've tried the handheld recorders before and even though they have their niche applications, I feel that most users have turned to them because they don't know any better. Once you give this a try I doubt you'll go back.

Comments about Fostex DC-R302 3-Channel Audio Mixer and Stereo Recorder:

An update to my last review: the mechanical switches are not designed very rigidly, so that it is possible for a switch to be stuck in between two selections. When this happens to the gain switches, it turns the input into a useless, noisy channel, and even if it is not perfectly placed in its specific switched position, there will be random clicks and pops.

With that said, all the relevant switches are there on the device itself rather than in menus, allowing for quick switching. Just know that the switches with more than two positions tend to be very finicky with where exactly they are positioned.

              Other thoughts:

The SNR is unbeatable, especially with low sensitivity microphones. It absolutely smashes the Zoom H6 and Tascam DR-70D's XLR inputs in terms of SNR. I tested this with very high gain settings for all three devices, and that was my conclusion.

The mounting bracket and holes are a blessing. I can mount this to a microphone stand and not worry about 50ft microphone cables. The body is solid metal, and it's got the weight of a well-made sound device. It can act as counterweight to an unbalanced microphone stand (I haven't mounted it to the actual boom, but to the vertical portion of a mic stand, although boom mounting does not seem impractical to me).

It is made in Japan(!!) not China, and the difference is clear.

Sometimes it will encounter a read error with the SD card and stop recording. I think I will attach its input to another recorder for more important recordings just in case this happens mid-performance.

With two phantom powered condenser microphones, the batteries last about two hours with 4 professional Ni-MH batteries (Eneloop). I might need to get a power adapter at some point.

It's kind of obvious, but the markers on the volume control knobs are very useful. Silly Tascam and their markerless knobs...

Of course the con that everyone mentions for this recorder is that it only records to two channels even though it has three inputs. I would gladly buy a 4 channel recorder if Fostex decided to distribute one...

Basically all controls on this unit are manually operated physical switches. As such, there is no software to streamline electrical processes. In my case, this means that when I had gain set to high levels, turning on and off phantom power permanently damaged the unit.

Everything else I wanted to say (and more) has been mentioned in other reviews on this item.

I tried several of the best-known competitors to this product and was really disappointed in the results (bad noise floor, lousy gain control, lots of hiss, just generally bad pre-amps) and ended up returning those products.I am extremely happy with this unit which has none of those problems. Build Quality. The build quality is much, much more robust than the competitors' units. This little box is made of steel and features mechanical switches for the most critical functions, which is a huge advantage.Sound Quality. Just terrific. The pre-amps here are excellent and vastly better than the competition. Seriously. Test it yourself and see.The only thing that I don't like about the unit is that although it has 3 mic inputs, it outputs to 2 channels, so you have to mix 2 channels into 1 which somewhat limits your options in post. If you are looking for a field recorder for DSLR filmmaking, this is the best unit in the price range. The next step up from this unit is going to be roughly 5x more expensive. This unit is a killer deal at its current price.

By attaching to the base of a DSLR and having good old fashioned knobs and switches on the face of the unit this allows not just recording but full one man operation of on the fly 3 channel sound mixer operation for DSLR cameras... without the need to enter any menus, which is a major plus. You can also use this as a stand alone non-camera mounted mixer in a two person setup making the unit very versatile for the DSLR shooter looking for professional audio mixer and recording options. It's made of a rugged a solid metal body and has a significantly lower body profile than the Tascam DR60. You can shoot handheld comfortably with this unit attached to your camera as well, it actually acts as a nice counter balance weight for handheld shots. The unit attaches to the base of the camera firmly and very quickly and easily. A few advanced setting are accessed through a very simple menu, but after initial setup these settings rarely need to be accessed prior to recording. Meaning you can power this recorder on, adjust a few dials and be recording in a mater of seconds without entering any menus. It has phantom power, gain switches, and low cut filter switches which are all you really need. the playback of files and folder operation is very easy to pick up.The audio quality is superb and virtually noise free. Having analog input dials means that on the fly level adjustments during recording don't have the digital gain "stepping" sound heard in non-analog/digital units. The unit shows remaining battery power but I used it for a solid 10 hour day using only one set of 4 NIMH rechargeable batteries and there was still plenty of power left by the end of the day. It's very easy to use and operate. Well worth every penny if you find current DSLR pro audio recorder/mixer alternatives lacking. My only con is at $ I wish it recorded more than just a stereo pair (2 track) recording. Otherwise it's an awesome professional unit. Well done Fostex.

I had been using a cheaper unit from a different manufacturer but after several smart phone interference and time code drift issues with it I spent the extra $ and picked this up.I have to say this thing is solid, quiet and definitely a piece of gear that will outlast my camera. I had this on ac power during five six hour days plugged straight into my gh series and it worked like a champ.I used it on a 9 hour wedding day and one set of batteries lasted all day.Truly an amazing product.

I paid $[$]! This thing is made of metal. It operates with switches, not menus. It's a 3-channel field mixer, much like a Shure FP33. Like he Shure, it has 3 inputs, phantom power, analog pan pots -- it reminds me a lot of my ENG news days. 1-2 wireless lavs panned to one channel and a shotgun panned to the other. That covers most interview situations. Except, unlike the Shure, the Fostex mounts under your DSLR AND records/mixes/outputs up to 96khz 24 bit audio! Read the specs and reviews. I also have a TASCAM DR-60 D. Admittedly, the TASCAM is half the current price of the DC-R302, but the Fostex is WAY faster to operate. Fast and easy and more durable and way cheaper than its intro price. I love this thing, and its still an awesome piece of DSLR audio kit for $[$]. Highly recommended!

I am mainly useing this product as a field recorder for nature recording. The preamps are very clean and low noise. The interface is simple and easy to use.

Transversing files from the device to a computer does take longer than expected. If you want more advanced functions I would consider a Sound Device.

Easy to use, professional, quality material, small but good quality sound and buttons. There is a slight problem with the files, that's why I gave 4 stars only, they can not be imported in Adobe Premiere 5.5 or 6 (at least, I haven't checked with other versions) The .WAV created must be imported in Adobe Audition, and then saved as .WAV in order to import them in Premiere, otherwise Premiere will close. I am using V1.24
Ps. The .WAV files are recorded at 24 bit 48Khz

Well, the fact that it has 3 XLRs, so much control for each, phantom power, a BUILT IN RECORDER etc., this thing has it all. The quality is great, the features cover everything a DSLR'r or video shooter would love.

My suggestions... wishing they included the power supply! this thing goes through batteries, the menu takes a little while to navigate through.. and hope it can sync up with the Panasonic GH2 soon!

Well worth the money. I have a Zoom H4N too, but this thing is the H4N on steroids.
