Comments about Fostex TH900 Premium Reference Headphones:

Very musical cans. By that I mean music is presented in a way that mimics great speakers. Bass is authoritative and articulate and punchy. Midrange is a little bit recessed but detailed and mostly neutral. Highs are clear and smooth without much harshness or sibilance. Soundstage is pretty expansive especially for closed phones. Very light and comfortable for audiophile grade headphones. Sound their best when driven by the Fostex HP-A8 DAC/Amp combo. Amazing synergy with that unit.

Comments about Fostex TH900 Premium Reference Headphones:

More balanced sound (more bass) than Sennheiser HD 800. Way more comfortable than Audeze LCD-X. I have not tried the AKG K812 but from what I have heard, the AKGs may be too bright for my liking. Very highly recommended!

Comments about Fostex TH900 Premium Reference Headphones:

Fostex TH900 headphones are fantastic sounding. I am using them with a WA7 Fireflies tube headphone amplifier and a Marantz CD-6004 cd player. The Fostex TH900's sound way better than the Grado RS1i headphones I was previously using (the Grado's are very good).

Comments about Fostex TH900 Premium Reference Headphones:

I have not fully broken them in yet, so I can't say 100%. I tried them with many devices. The Best: in Magnolia, I brought my pair in the store and plugged them into their best McIntosh amp. And wow, that was very warm and beautiful. Full in every way. So nice, exactly what these were meant for. (vacuum tube amplifier)Portable: Fostex HP-P1 headphone DAC/Amp, with a silver audioquest cable at first (Diamond series $600) but that didn't sound so good. The clarity of the silver may have been adding a coarseness, I'm not sure, so I tried the Cinnamon (silver plated copper $80)and that was better but still not good enough for the Fostex TH 900's. (I also used an adapter for the 1/4 inch plug on the TH900 developed by ALO Audio that was a warm recipe of high quality copper and silver plated)The HeadAmp Pico: excellent little amp, warm, powerful, sleek little guy, however it's Dock to Mini (1/8 jack) from the iPod, no usb connection like the Fostex HP P1 amp or the AlgoRythm Solo (the only two portables that I'm aware of that use iPods digital Lossless file format in the form of 30-pin iPod connector to USB, into the DAC for the best quality). The Icon NuForce desktop amp (the nicer one, don't remember which), via pure silver mini to rca y-splitter. (It had a 1/4 jack and had good reviews so I thought maybe for my desk at work). I found it only drove these Fostex TH 900's to less than half their potential and the silver was too bright, too harsh, their DAC wasn't up to it. The amp was not nearly powerful enough either.Basically they need a lot of power to drive them, I believe..So, I have settled on the AlgoRythm Solo and Continental V2 combo package from ALO audio to power these headphones. Due to the military-grade Raytheon vacuum tube (limited supply) in these devices, The Continental will give my Fostex TH900's the warmth they deserve and the AlgoRythmSolo will deliver the power..FYI: Audio Technica's newest Noise Cancelling headphones were hands-down much much better than the new Sennheiser Noise Cancelling headphones at fifty bucks cheaper too (300$). So it'll be the AT's on the plane and the Fostex TH 900 for everywhere else.. They are butter in my ears no matter how it's sliced.
