A tripod head is required and not included with these legs. Be sure you purchase a tripod head to attach to your camera.

Comments about Gitzo Series 3 6X Systematic 4-Section Tripod (Long):
I decided on the 3542ls because I wanted a tripod that would put my camera at eye level, be able to shoot nearly flat on the ground and be able to hold enough weight so I don't have to worry about it when I rent the big heavy telephoto lenses. Getting the camera to eye level without a center column was a big point for me. I'm right at 6ft. and these legs set the eye level perfect.
There's not much else I feel I need to say about this tripod. I figure if your looking at it your like me and most likely did several months of research before buying. Only thing I would add I didn't see in the other reviews or the description is the legs come with gitzo snow/sand shoes in a cool little drawstring bag. Nice little bonus.
Bottom line is you get what you pay for, and the attention to detail and high level of craftsmanship in Gitzo products made this an easy choice.

I am 5'10". The tripod is slightly taller than me. I like 4 sections becasue the folded lengh is smaller than the 3 sections.I use BH-55 ballhead. It is a very stable setup.

This a really nice still tripod for sure. However, I do a lot of cinematography as well and sometimes like to do video on my dslr while traveling. This tripod is,perfect for that. You can quickly pop off the top plate and add a75mm bowl head video head. Lightweight and can still carry on plane. Perfect for travel.

Comments about Gitzo Series 3 6X Systematic 4-Section Tripod (Long):
Rock solid, quick and smooth setup, and feels lighter than the stated weight. The price is hard to swallow, but I can see the quality in the construction and the performance. More than adequate for a 500 f4 series lens with Wimberley head. The new features, safety lock disk and built in spike feet are definite improvements over earlier models. If only the matching accessories came out at the same time, e.g., additional center plates. Great tripod, but is the price really justified?

Comments about Gitzo Series 3 6X Systematic 4-Section Tripod (Long):
I upgraded from a G1340 to the GT3542LS and I could not be happier with my new tripod. I love the lighter weight. The GT3542LS with my Kirk BH-1 ballhead weighs a bit less than the G1340 legs alone do. I like that it is more compact too, (since it is a 4-section model vs the 3-sections for the G1340). The GT3542LS rides very comfortably strapped to the side of my F-stop Loka backpack. As much as I like the lighter weight I also like the anti-rotation leg locks just as well. They make the GT3542LS much quicker to set up. Finally Gitzo seems to have eliminated my biggest complaint with their older tripods. The leg locks no longer swell and lock up so tight you can't undo them when they get wet. I've used the GT3542LS in a pond without doing anything special to it afterwards and have experienced no lock-ups.

Solid as a rock. A little heavier than the 2-series, and a little more bulky, but wow is it solid. The twist-lock leg sections are so much better than lever-locks. One twist of a quarter-turn and you can extend all sections at once. Build quality is outstanding. Highly recommended.

Comments about Gitzo Series 3 6X Systematic 4-Section Tripod (Long):
I have only just received this tripod a few days ago, but I can already tell this is going to be a lifetime purchase. Incredibly solid. Everything about it just oozes quality. I had purchased a GT2541 and only had it for about 2 weeks before I realized these new '12 Systematics were available - I did a return with B&H, which was super easy, and I am amazed at how much more solid this is vs. the 2541. I am a semi-pro photog, doing weddings, portraits, etc, but I'm most excited about using this for my personal projects. Macro, outdoor/wildlife, etc. The length is great - will fit into a carry-on, although may need to be sort of diagonal in your bag. It's got quite a bit more girth to it vs. the 2541. The head-section is probably 1.5x as wide as that one. But it's just so incredibly solid. Now my ball-head is the weak link, so I have to plan for an upgrade there, and maybe someday to a Wimberly head for wildlife. I highly recommend this tripod.
