The Series 5 6X Systematic 3-Section Long Tripod from Gitzo is a great choice for those looking for a tripod that features professional support, yet adaptable and flexible configurations. The Series 5 Long tripods are ideal for supporting larger video or DSLR cameras, and lenses.

The Series 5 tripod has a unique modular system that can be quickly transformed into different configurations the same tripod to support both photographic and video equipment. This tripod can be extended to 4.9' high and handle a DSLR with up to an 800mm lens.

Series 5 tripods have an Anti Leg Rotation system (ALR), G-Lock, and brushed matte black finish for improved locking performance and minimized reflectivity. A wide selection of accessories allows you to keep growing your system according to your future needs, whether they are still life, macro, outdoor, sport or wildlife applications.

Anti Leg Rotation
This tripod can be opened in less than 15 seconds. Simply loosen all the twist locks on each leg at the same time, then pull the leg down and tighten the locks individually.
G-Lock
For a strong, fast, and safer locking mechanism, G-Lock's special design provides a 'gravity lock' effect: the higher the load applied vertically to the leg, the stronger the lock becomes.
Leg Ends
With removable rubber feet, the Series 3 allows you to easily change worn out rubber feet or to fit other accessories, such as spiked feet.
Hook
A built-in hook allows you to hang a stabilizing weight, like a full camera bag or a sand bag, from the bottom of the tripod head plate. This is helpful when using long, heavy lenses, on uneven ground or in windy conditions.

Comments about Gitzo Series 5 6X Systematic 3-Section Tripod (Long):

This tripod is incredibly study and built like a tank. Maybe it's even a bit of an overkill for my purposes. It will support my entire weight (180#) so a DSLR and 400 mm lens is easily supported. Tapping on the tripod doesn't cause the camera/lens setup to vibrate like my former tripod/head assembly did.

I also ordered the Gitzo geared center post. I know the "experts" tell you not to use a center post, but with this sturdy tripod, it isn't an issue and it does give the convenience of quick adjustments for macro work. I also teamed this assembly up with an Induro 5-way head. This combo is truly awesome.

There is one small issue using the tripod with the center post. When storing the tripod, the legs touch the center post and could be scratched. A large rubber band strategically placed around the center column solves this small problem.

Another issue is the size and weight of this combination. However, I am prepared for and expected this tradeoff.

There is no doubt that I, not my photo gear, am the the weakest link.

Comments about Gitzo Series 5 6X Systematic 3-Section Tripod (Long):

Another high quality Gitzo product. I own a smaller Gitzo tripod, which I purchased along with my 200-400mm lens. However, I found that the smaller tripod was not as steady with a 600mm. This tripod fits the bill.

Comments about Gitzo Series 5 6X Systematic 3-Section Tripod (Long):

I have mixed feelings about this tripod but I will still give it five stars based on the fact that what I encountered was definitely a rarity. This tripod is top of the line, but the original tripod I recieved had a manufacturer defect. It had a one inch long hairline split on one of the legs, I'm surprised I even saw it. BandH was very quick to help me replace/exchange it. With that being said, seeing that I exchanged it and did not just return it, should speak for the tripod itself.

Comments about Gitzo Series 5 6X Systematic 3-Section Tripod (Long):

This is actually the second one of these I bought. I had one I have been using with a ball head attached. When I purchased a Wimberley full gimbal head, I bought this one so I wouldn't wear the threads out changing them. This is a superb quality, very stable tripod. I was using another manufacturer's model before these and was not pleased with the stability. I have no complaints with these at all. I do however wish they made a caring bag that would hold the tripod with a head attached.

Comments about Gitzo Series 5 6X Systematic 3-Section Tripod (Long):

I use this tripod for nature photography in the field. The gear I load onto it is a Canon EF600mm f/4L IS USM with a 2X extender on a Canon 1D MarkIV. That all swings from a JOBU Pro gimbal mount. So the the gear weighs about 21 pounds and this tripod handles it perfectly. It is rock solid!!! Some new improvements are also definitely worth mentioning: The new style plate is superb. It has a locking mechanism on it that prevents it from accidentally falling out if you would forget to tighten the new style plate retaining screw, which has a built in tightening handle on it (no wrench needed). So, no safety plate needed! It also still has the quaint little hook to hang some weight from. I personally find hanging anything from that hook almost impossible because of its small size. So, screw in a bigger hook ($1.50 at hardware store). The plate is also huge, being a whopping 3-3/4" wide, you can mount almost anything to it and lock it down with the customary stainless steel set-screw.The legs are VERY stout at 1-1/2" diameter on the top sections. The tripod comes with the standard rubber snap-over-spike feet, the old style (smaller) screw in feet and a set of snow shoes (aprox. 3" wide) for mushy conditions. The leg angle locks were also improved by adding a raised little thumb slot on each side so you can get your fingers in there to pull it out...GREAT improvement! Gitzo also added a set of lines on each middle leg section in order to give you a benchmark when setting up the height. I pull out the legs to that exact line and my eye-piece is at the perfect height...lucky I guess, but the idea is, you have something to gauge the leg extension by for your particular set-up.Yes, this tripod is heavier than my old GT3541LS, however, that additional weight is good trade for the additional height. When shooting birds in flight, it's nice not to have to bend like a pretzel in order to look through the eye piece. When you don't need the added height, shove it up into a leg section! I don't mind the additional weight if it serves a purpose, and, it's still very light in comparison to its size.If you shoot a big heavy lens/camera combo...GET ONE! You will LOVE it!Jeff

Pricey and justifiably so. Light and ultra solid mount for big glass. Reeks of quality and works flawlessly so far. Set aside some more cash for the case too (Gitzo). ...and the ball mount (Arca-swiss). ...and the gimbal mount (Wimberley sidekick). ...and the several quick relase plates and mounts (Wimberley). You'll quickly double the price of the tripod just outfitting it with the needed goodies.
