The LaCie 0TB Diskless 5big Network 2 5-Bay RAID Server provides professional, reliable, central data storage. Instantly store, share and back up from any PC or Mac on your network. With up to a whopping 15 TB of storage capacity and a total of five drive bays (drives sold separately), the 5big is further expandable with 2 USB and 2 eSATA ports--giving you all the space you need! Dual Ethernet ports enable you to perform link aggregation and get twice the performance of a single Gigabit Ethernet connection. Recommended for networks of up to 50 users, the 5big Network 2 is the solution for IT environments seeking high capacity and high data transfer rates.
Courtesy of the secure RAID modes, including RAID 5 and RAID 6, the 5big Network 2 allows you to retain data access, even if one disk should fail. Hot-swappable disk trays even enable maintenance without affecting workflow. "Spare" modes permit a second level of protection, a kind of "automatic maintenance" that will instantly start rebuilding the RAID protection in the event of disk failure. With space for 5 disks, the 5big provides greater capacity than 4-disk solutions in nearly every RAID mode. Additional spare disks are available as an option for immediate replacement (not included).
Get added security and improve data portability by backing up your LaCie 5big Network 2, at your own convenience, to an external hard drive. Accomplish this via the server's USB and eSATA ports using the built-in copy system. The 5big Network 2 also comes equipped with 3 client licenses for Genie Backup Manager Pro for Windows, as well as 3 licenses for Intego Backup Manager Pro for Mac. This software may be installed on each PC or Mac for client backups to the NAS, and enables you to reliably and efficiently back up your documents, emails, settings and other assets. The software supports compressed, encrypted or image backups, and implements a computer recovery function in the event of system failure. You can also use Windows 7 Backup, if you prefer. The LaCie 5big Network 2 works with Mac OS X 10.5 and 10.6, too, including Time Machine, making it the perfect partner for your Mac!
Set up an iSCSI share of your 5big Network 2 and mount it as a local share on your computer, in the same manner that external hard drives get mounted when you connect them to your PC or Mac. An iSCSI connection will grant you performance and versatility for professional applications. You can even use the 5big Network 2 as the final backup destination for any server integrating an iSCSI initiator.
Thanks to the 5big Network 2's new widget-like dynamic web interface, administration is simple, convenient and safe. With DHCP and Apipa support, network configuration is quick and automatic. The product integrates easily with existing Windows domains via Active Directory, and enables user, group, share and quota management. Access to administration pages and shares is simple with LaCie Network Assistant. What's more is that the server can provide you with email notifications of events such as backups, disk failures, dangerous temperatures, and more.
The 5big Network 2 assists you in the reduction of power consumption by switching to idle mode (where the disk spins off) after a pre-determined inactivity time. You may also schedule a deep sleep on / off mode, according to your requirements. Courtesy of the Wake-on-LAN feature, the server may be switched back to operating mode from the client side. The 5big Network 2 also integrates UPS support via its USB ports, in order to ensure proper shutdown in the event of a power failure. Additionally, its exclusive durable and elegant aluminum design, by Neil Poulton, makes it your partner in being environmentally conscious, as it's recyclable and ROHS compliant.
Note! Total accessible capacity varies depending upon operating environment (typically 10-15% less).

Comments about LaCie 0TB Diskless 5big Network 2 5-Bay RAID Server:
I bought a 5TB unit a couple of years ago. It was easy to set up, once formatted (I formatted as RAID 5), I started using it as a NAS on my home network. Worked well but the sleep function didn't work. I had to manually spin the disks down and then leave the switch in the middle position. It didn't spin back up unless I went into the control software (which didn't work on Windows 7) and manually wake it back up. Guess that's wake on LAN? Not so bad but then... One day one of the disks went bad. I bought an identically spec'd disk from a local store ($) and installed it in the hot swap cage. Plugged it in, told it to add the disk to the RAID. After 18 hours it completed and looked great, for about an hour. Then it started blinking red again and the admin page said the disk was "removed from the RAID". Huh? I submitted a ticket on the support web site and was told I had to buy a replacement drive from LaCie. Okay, $ (plus the original $) later, the same thing happened! Another submittal to the support desk and I'm told I have to try reformatting the whole thing. What? That means I loose all the data off the drives in the RAID. What's a "hot swap" RAID for??? To avoid this!!! So I bought a USB drive, plugged it into the unit and I can't access it. Riduculous! I'll try again, plugging the USB drive into my computer and copy everything off and see what happens. This has now been weeks and I've had the unit off because I don't trust it. I'm going to buy another unit (don't know what kind yet but not LaCIE!). If I get this one restored, I will use it again but I won't treat is as more than a way overpriced external drive. I will not buy another one for sure. Several other drawbacks. Can't access over the web. It's pretty slow compared to a share folder on any of my computers on the same network.

Comments about LaCie 0TB Diskless 5big Network 2 5-Bay RAID Server:
The unit is perfect for backup and file sharing, and has been working flawlessly thus far. With the 5big configured, we now have a centralised printing solution among other things. It resloves a bunch of headaches we used to deal with and makes an excellent addition to our network.

Comments about LaCie 0TB Diskless 5big Network 2 5-Bay RAID Server:
A few weeks ago I was stuck between buying a backup system and a second system to store large project files. I didn't want the excess drives so this 5big Network 2 is perfect. I can keep my work data securely backed up as well as my work files which I can easily access over the local network or remotely. I can also add more dtives as the storage needs grow. Best of both worlds again LaCie.

Comments about LaCie 0TB Diskless 5big Network 2 5-Bay RAID Server:
We needed some external storage space for our office, and ended up buying this unit. It's a perfect solution for us - easy to set up, there's loads of storage space (we've installed 3 disks, 2 TB each) and possibility to add more disks if needed. The unit is compatible with Time Machine. We are very pleased with it.

Comments about LaCie 0TB Diskless 5big Network 2 5-Bay RAID Server:
An all-purpose, easy to setup RAID server, which I personally find very useful. Setting it up took me just one evening, including installing the disks, and setting up RAID. The unit has been working flawlessly so far, and it doesn't require much attention from my part. It's silent and doesn't overheat.

Comments about LaCie 0TB Diskless 5big Network 2 5-Bay RAID Server:
I bought this to use it to store video projects and backups. I installed four 2 TB drives. The initial setup and mounting were faster than I expected. The speeds are good. The unit is very quiet and well designed.
