The black 5.140 Lens Case from Beta Shell is a unique entry to the world of lens cases. It provides you with a durable way to protect your optic while traveling or out in rough weather. It has been heavily tested to be water-proof to 5.0' (1.5 m)and also withstand severe weather conditions. The shell itself is made from rigid and shock-resistant ABS plastic. Inside, you'll find 1.5" thick polyurethane memory foam at the bottom that is used to hold the lens in place once inserted into the case. This foam is soft, strong and extremely resistant to losing its shape. Also included with the package is silica gel for additional moisture protection.

Your lens is placed element down with the back end facing upwards. The twist lid is then placed over the case and sealed with an internal O-Ring. Once closed, to make sure your lens is seated properly, shake the case. If you feel the lens move around, re-open it and reset the lens making sure it does not move around once closed. For added convenience, if your lens is a bit smaller than the case, Beta includes a foam spacer disk to make up the volume difference. The Beta Shell opens and closes much like any twist top bottle but you will notice the outside of the lid displays machined icons to indicate the proper directions for opening and closing the case. The lid is also machined with good-sized ridges for a very firm finger grip that will be especially useful if you are wearing gloves. Topping off the system is a bungee-style strap on the lid that makes removing the case from your backpack or shoulder bag much easier.

It is important to note that Beta Shell defines "water-proof" as preventing water and moisture from entering the case when the top lid is securely closed. Proper adherence to the included instructions are mandatory if the case is to be used correctly and the lens completely protected.

For the inveterate and intrepid outdoor photographer - or even if you just want a very strong, secure and water-proof lens case, the Beta Shell system is a cost-effective way to protect your valuable optic. It's backed by Beta's lifetime warranty against manufacturer's defects.

Comments about Beta Shell 5.140 Lens Case (Black):

I use this case with my 28-70mm f/2.8 ED IF AF-S Zoom Nikkor. It fits perfectly *without* the lens hood. I never wanted to carrry the hood in this case as it is not my carry-around case. I use this case for travel. This last trip was a four-day hike in the Needles section of Canyonlands National Park. I needed dust-proof, drop proof protection and this case fits the bill. Although Beta Shell sells a line of "Light" lens cases, this is not very heavy when considered as part of the overall lens weight.
The good news is I never dropped it. The really good news is this thing is seriously padded. It has adjustable foam padding so the lens just does not move and is protected completely. There is always a layer of shock-absorbing foam between the case and the lens.
The outer shell appears to be made from a polycarbonate resin thermoplastic such as Lexan or an equivalent. This is the main component in bullet-proof "glass" and I suspect is the reason for Beta Shell's ad phrase "bullet proof lens case".
The top screws on snugly, but has a very wide, easy-to-grip handle for easy removal. No need to worry about torque: you are not stronger than the material unless you are Bruce Banner on a bad day.
I am an amateur photographer of 35 years in all formats of film and digital, including MF digital. I have now ordered other Beta Shells for my expensive, or just much-loved lenses.
Another use I have found for these is fungus-prevention for older lenses. This case is vapor-tight and light-tight. It comes with a desiccant pack (and replacement pack in a sealed bag). Toss in that old lens with a pack and close it up and the combination of darkness and low humidity will protect your lens. I sealed my grandfathers Summicron Type 2 in one of these topped it with nitrogen to store it for another generation. I will update this review in 10 years when I hand it off my my granddaughter ;)
            To summarize:
The Beta Shell 5 series are the best protection you can get for your lenses (6 series for long Teles).
There are no cons at all as the quality justifies the price.

Comments about Beta Shell 5.140 Lens Case (Black):

My toy box is overflowing but I needed protection for a recently acquired 85mm 1.4 Nikkor lens that I can't afford to replace. A larger percentage of my photography occurs during hiking and a lens on camera and another in backpack has to be sufficient. One Beta Shell was ordered to accommodate four different lens sizes. The 'Shell' is bulky but there isn't an alternative form of lens container that offers the same worry free caliber of security and safety that it does. It doesn't eliminate all possibility of a disaster but for a few dollars extra it does reduce the odds.

The very best in lens protection. Also great to put into a soft bag yet still have the safety of a hard case where it counts.
