What item is right for you?

Ask our Experts!

With the wealth of large high-definition video and picture files, storage is becoming a rapidly growing concern. Before you look to the clouds for an answer, consider the 4TB Touro Deskpro Hard Drive to alleviate some of the pressure.

That's right - 4TB. Breaking it down, that equals about 2,000 full-length HD movies - your entire Blu-ray collection, for example - 1.5 million 3-4 minute songs, and over 4 million high-quality photos. If you have that much data lying around and you need to consolidate it in one central place, then this unit has more than enough storage space for you.

The sleek, stackable design is easy on the eyes as well. At only about 2 inches thick, the compact drive will easily fit on your desk without cluttering it. And the amount of storage you gain could get rid of all the discs, memory cards, and other external drives you have taking up precious desktop real estate.

Thankfully, the unit is USB 3.0 ready, which means speedier transfer rates. It's also USB 2.0 compatible so you won't be left behind if you have an older computer. The purchase of the unit also gets you 3 GB of free cloud storage, which gives you even more room to put essential files in, allowing you an extra level of protection against lost or stolen files.

Small Form Factor
The 4TB Touro Deskpro Hard Drive easily fits on a desktop, giving you a total storage solution coupled with an outstanding design. Stack them together, and you could have every storage need for an entire company in one place.
Fast USB 3.0 Interface
Forget the days of huffing and puffing data through the synchronous transfer of USB 2.0 - the new USB 3.0 interface uses asynchronous data transfer giving you almost ten times the speed of USB 2.0 - basically the difference between watering your garden with a watering can versus a full-powered fire hose.
Cloud Storage
The unit also offers 3GB of cloud storage out of the box, and additional 250 GB of cloud storage with a paid account, adding to the 4TB of on-deck storage. Why the extra storage? With an upgraded paid account, users can access their cloud storage from their iPhone or iPads over WiFi - and for essential and much-needed files, this is certainly a plus.
Stackable Design
Multiple units easily stack on top of each other in a concise, form-fitting manner, allowing you to keep several in one place without giving up more real estate on your desk or in your workroom. Their portability also lets you remove a drive for travel, without giving up too much space in your luggage.

The things that make this item great are: 1) FAST - High RPM drive means noticeably faster access times than most large TB externals. USB 3.0 means fast transfer speeds.2) Cheap - Post hurricane storage prices have not been coming down at all. [$] for fast 4TB is a STEAL. I bought this as a drive to attach to my WD TV media center. I was a little bit worried that the USB 3.0 wouldn't work with my media box, but there have not been any problems at all with USB 2.0 backwards compatibility. The USB 3.0 boost in speed is noticeable when I connect to my computer.Another thing I like about it is the 2 year warranty. WD just bought Hitachi. I was skeptical about buying a non Seagate or WD drive, but now the drive is backed by WD and I feel a bit better. Because of the hurricane the only drive to currently compare this to is a seagate goflex 4tb (WD does not make a 4tb drive). I am turned off by the design of the goflex (it has to stand up, it has a weird base interface), so this drive's simple design is a big plus for me. However, it is oversized (much fatter/thicker than my WD Elements drives), and it has a bright blue blinking neon light that can't be turned off that can be kind of annoying. I think these drives are meant to be stackable, but the casing doesn't have the strongbox feel that the WD Elements drives do. Also it runs a bit hot. So I'm hesitant. All in all, though, these things have been running great. As soon as I plugged it into my PC it ran fine. I haven't tried the free 3gb of cloud storage, so can't speak to that feature.

I bought three of these when i recently upgraded to a new Imac. Two regular backups and one for off site storage. Althought each drive comes with it's own backup software, the software will not reformat the drive, which comes formatted for PC. You'll have to use your disk utility or software of choice to get each drive ready for use on a Mac.

The body has a cheap build to it, the power cord could be longer, and it would be nice if it had a firewire port ont back. Like so many other products, it has an annoyingly bright blue light that doesn't turn off.

On the plus side, it has a lot of space, it is not nearly as loud as my Seagate or Iomega external drives, and it comes with a USB 3 cable.

Comments about HGST 4TB Touro Deskpro Hard Drive 7200 RPM:

I use the product to back up multiple PCs as a NAS was far too slow and the NAS dumbed down interface was unsatisfactory. I removed the cloud storage offer as it was too small to be useful and buying more would be pointless and expensive. It does take a long time to backup 2+TB of data but USB3 speed was good and much faster than to a NAS. Though the enclosed HDD is still the most reliable HGST/Hitachi and not from the new owners, I like to keep offline between backups to extend life.

Pros: Reasonable price, 7200 rpm.Cons: I've purchased three units, two are fine, but third out of box has a plastic piece inside the housing apparently loose and will have to exchange at B&H. I realize things happen in manufacturing, and this may not affect function if the drive, but with item used for media data, need better Quality Control.

Comments about HGST 4TB Touro Deskpro Hard Drive 7200 RPM:

I'm happy with it! Works for Mac or PC, has a ton of space, and so far have had no problems with it (it's been about a month.) Set up was easy peasy, and the machine itself doesn't get too hot. The whole set up is super simple for storage and time machine uses as well. Only thing is that the fact that it needs a wall plug-in with no on/off switch is slightly annoying, because you have to unplug whenever you're done instead of pushing a button -- but it's pretty big and meant to be an at-home-use drive anyway, so not too big a deal.

Though I've only had this for a month, I've used 1 TB touros for the past 3 years, and I'm extremely happy with them. I've used them A BUNCH and taken them around, and have never once had an issue with them, so I'm a fan of htis brand.

I used the 4TB Touro Deskpro Hard Drive 7200 RPM for backing up my computer, which had two failures. It was quick and easy to store my data to the Touro. I did some comparative shopping, and the price I paid was very reasonable. I also purchased the two year warranty in case of drops and spills.

Moved it to my other system that has USB3 and found again that it so much slower than my other Seagates. Probably won't return it, but it has been assigned to very limited use.

Great price for what you get. I had a seagate 1.5tb usb 2.0 5900rpm's, and it was in the same price range when I purchased it.

The 4th drive out performes my old one easily!

I was recommended this product and bought it like 2 weeks ago. Since then I used it twice and like it so far. Speed is pretty good, and it wasn't expensive. However you can't really use it if you travel or being away from the outlet or move it while in use because this hard drive requires to be connected to it, but the good thing about it is that hard drive doesn't take energy from my laptop

Bought this unit to replace a Seagate (lost 2 in 3 months!). Running on an XP system USB 2.0, so I know that I'm not getting optimal performance, however... The Seagates (I have 6 of them still in operation) are also USB 3.0/2.0 compatible, but are at least 5X faster. The Touro is SO disappointingly slow that I am considering returning it. Will try it on my Win7 system (with 3.0 ports) to see if it is acceptable there. If so, will still have to purchase another much faster drive for the XP. Wasn't looking to invest in 2 drives at this time...

Everything so far is as hoped for EXCEPT for the sleep cycle. This thing sleeps more than a 99 year old dog. Only things is, the dog wakes up faster ! Were it not for that I would have given it 6 stars ! Blazing fast (for an HDD) when it is awake. Quiet! Runs a bit hot. Case feels solid. USB3 cable included. Have already bought a second one. Now I need to find a way to inject it with caffeine

So far the 4TB Touro Deskpro 7200rpm USB 3.0 ext HDD is working great. It has plenty of space for my 1080p home videos and whatever else needs backing up. I don't mind not having a power switch since it could cause problems if shut off when your computer is on.

Lots of storage at a good price. I only have USB 2 so I can't take advantage of it's full speed, but speed is acceptable w/USB 2. Have used it for a couple months with no problems. Wish it had a power switch.

Great build, great company, Great drive, but a bit slow on the MacPro towers since they don't have USB 3.0. Also, the drive comes formatted at FAT32 so if you are on a mac, youll need to reformat it for use.

Also, there is 2 flavors of this drive floating around, Western Digital and Hitachi... however, if you are dubbing from one brand to another, its the same buuld just with different drives. I give it 4 stars, 1 negative for being ONLY USB 3.0
