Questions? Ask our experts:

The black Digital Holster 50 V2.0 from Think Tank contains a unique "Pop Down" feature that allows the lens hood to be kept on the camera held in shooting position. For the active shooter, this is a real time-saver. The case is made to hold a regular-sized DSLR such as a Canon 1D, 1Ds or Nikon D3, D4 with a 70-200mm f/2.8 with its hood either reversed or in shooting position. Or, it can hold a wide lens such as a 24-70mm f/2.8 with the hood in shooting position. Your camera can also be placed in the bag with a tripod plate or L-bracket attached to it.

This is a form-fitting case, somewhat reminiscent of a western holster - ready to draw and shoot at a moment's notice. The case comes with a side rail attachment that accepts a small Modular, Skin, or Multimedia component. This increases the footprint and capacity of the holster as well as your shooting capabilities. The holster comes with Think Tank's "Rotate or Lock" technology for their Pro Speed Belt, Thin Skin Belt or Steroid Speed Belt that permits you to attach the holster with no effort at all. There is also a smooth fabric on the belt to minimize friction against your body. One of the best features of the bag is that the lid opens away from your body. This enhances access to your gear as well as adding a significant security aspect to the bag since, when opened, the lid acts a shield preventing others from seeing what's inside. The removable shoulder strap and top grab handle are complemented by dual zippers that guard the access to the main compartment.

For accessories, a front stretch pocket can hold lens caps, batteries and other small items. Another touch fastened small accessory pocket is located under the top lid that is perfect for holding a filter. For ultimate protection of the delicate LCD screen on your DSLR, a soft divider fits over the top protecting it from the strap that may be stuffed inside.

There's nothing like networking so the bag comes with a neat business card holder right under the top grab handle. Finally, for maximum protection while outside, the bag comes with a built-in rain cover that is stored in an outside pocket and which can be easily deployed when the weather turns against you. The holster comes with Think Tank's lifetime warranty against manufacturer's defects.

Form-fitting to hold a standard DSLR with a 70-200mm f/2.8 attached (hood reversed or in shooting position); or can hold a 24-70mm f/2.8 with hood attached

I bought this to fit my Sigma 150-500 OS mounted on Nikon D7100, which I use for bird photography. I do not use extension (to fit lens hood) in the holster as I do not use a lens hood for my lenses. The lens along with the camera just about fits in the holster without opening the holster extension. I also attach my speedlite and the Better Beamer to the side of the holster (refer to the attached image) ... in addition it has several very clever little pockets to keep batteries, memory cards, filters etc ... this set up helps me be ready for wildlife / bird photograpy at a moments notice and provides adequate protection for the camera & lens, while driving through rough/bumpy terrain.

I bought this holster after going to the "Think Tank" website and reading, "Carries a gripped DSLR with a 70-200mm f/2.8 attached and its lens hood in position or reversed. Also fits the Tamron 150-600, Canon 100-400 (both versions) with hood reversed." It must really take some breaking-in because the Tamron 150-600mm mounted on my D90 or D810 is a battle getting in the holster without the lens hood period and it definitely will not go in with the tripod ring in place. Very disappointed in "Think Tank." It does appear to be made well but since I haven't really used it, I can't really say.

Comments about Think Tank Photo Digital Holster 50 V2.0 (Black):

I use it to carry/protect my Tamron 150-500mm lens on a D7100 body (while I wear my D800 cross body with another lens. The Tamron is >not< quick/easy to get out of the holster when the hood is attached in the up position. As an earlier reviewer mentioned, when the hood is attached in the up position it gets caught on the stitching in the extended part of the holster and you have to fiddle with it to get it out. Not fun if you are trying to be quick to capture an image. If it didn't catch on the stitching I would give it 5 stars. Regardless it is a Think Tank product and is very well made so I love that.

Comments about Think Tank Photo Digital Holster 50 V2.0 (Black):

I bought this bag primarily for the the zip down extension that allows the lens hood to stay attached (which works as promised). What hasn't worked so well is the lack of space for the lens/tripod foot (Nikon 70-200 2.8). I find it difficult to pull the camera and lens out holster style because the lens binds up.

I have a Canon 7D (with battery grip) and the 28-300mm lens (with lens hood) which I carry all the time. I have used a variety of bags but invariably, the safest option has been to take the lens off the body and put it in one of numerous bags. This holster fits everything perfectly, comfortable to carry and answers every need I have. Convenient pockets - this bag was designed using common sense.

I bought this to carry my 60D with the Tamron 150-600 attached. This allows me to carry my 6D by other means, thereby having both crop and full frames with me when out on a shoot. It provides protection while still offering quick access to the camera. I don't reverse the hood on the Tamron, I remove it. It hangs up in the bottom of the case when trying to remove camera quickly. It's really not a problem, I strap it to the case on the outside. Overall it is well constructed, sufficiently padded and much better than having a camera bouncing around on a strap unprotected.

Very satisfied, other reviewers claimed this would hold the Tamron 150-600mm mounted on the Nikon D7100, with hood reversed. They were right, it does, and this is all I wanted. I was pleased also how this tended to hug close to my body while using with shoulder strap, as well as appreciating the belt loop, which I haven't used yet but certainly will when carrying two camera bodies.

Large and sturdy; able to hole a pro body and a zoom lens like a 80-400 zoom lens in a convenient manner so that one is ready to shoot quickly. A little bulky, but necessary given the size of the equipment it's holding.

I bought the 50 simply because it was the longest holster. I like almost everything about it. The zippered extension is brilliant---the bottom zipper goes around and around to lengthen or shorten the holster. I am a full-time, off-trail wilderness photographer. I use no camera bags---just two holsters in which I store my lenses and camera. The 50 will exactly hold the Canon 5D III, the new Canon 100-400 w/1.4 extender...with the hood extended. A unique, well thought-out bag, well-made and at a reasonable price.

I use this with my D7100 and Tamron 150-600 lens. I needed something to place the unit in when I change to my smaller camera for landscape or macro pictures. I walk a lot so this is perfect for my needs.

Wrote first review two weeks ago, and I still think the bag is first-rate. Only negatives are the poorly designed rain cover and the shoulder strap being lees comfortable than the one on the Tamrac holster.

Perfect for carrying my crop camera with Canon 300MM, f4 lens attached. Belt and shoulder strap work perfectly. Light weight and like a quick draw holster.

My Tamrac 5627 Zoom 7 holster [now discontinued] is perfect for Canon T3i with grip & E1 hand strap mounting EF-S 15-85 with shade. However, it's not large enough for my new Canon 7D mkII with grip & E2 handstrap. After a lot of research, the Thinktank 50 with 18.5 x 18.5 cm opening beat the Lowepro 75 AW for a new holster bag. Very impressed with the 50's carrying capacity and the quality of Thinktank's materials & construction. Replaced the Thinktank strap with the wider, curved, better padded one from Tamrac bag as it is far more comfortable. The design of the Thinktank rain cover is absolutely useless and will not fit the bag with shoulder strap attached. Aside from that, the Thinktank 50 holster comfortably rides above hipbone with cross chest strap.

Very well designed top loader. I use it with my Canon !DX with 70-200 F2.8 mounted. You can unzip the extension on the bottom and it will hold this setup with the lens hood in place (ready to shoot). The only knock I have on it so far is the padding on the shoulder strap is less than desirable. This bag is much more useable than the Lowpro I was using, the lowpro would not zip closed with my 1DX.
