The black Shape Shifter with a gray and blue interior from Think Tank starts off as a compact 3" thick laptop case but can quickly expand to hold two DSLRs and three lenses - in addition to your laptop. This bag is unique in that it doesn't look like a camera backpack yet it holds enough to get you through the most demanding of gigs. The beauty of the pack is that it can expand or contract to accommodate whatever gear you are carrying that day.

It features built-in neoprene dividers that keep your gear separated and safe from rubbing against each other. Your 17" laptop is held in its own separate, padded compartment. It also contains organizer pockets for support gear as well as interior mesh pockets for smaller stuff like memory cards, batteries and cleaning cloths. It comes with two tripod straps that hold your pod in the bottom front pocket.

The waist belt is removable and the liner on the back is breathable for added comfort. In addition to the contoured harness, there's a sternum that will provide added balance while running to get that special shot. The pack's D-Rings can be used to secure quick access items. For even more capacity, the Shape Shifter accepts the optional Think Tank Pro Speed Belt, Modular and Skin on which you can hang additional pouches. Access to your gear is via strong YKK zippers that will accept a user-supplied lock.

For the outside shooter, there's a removable rain cover that can be rapidly deployed during rain or snow. As a final touch, the Shape Shifter will accept Think Tank's Camera Support Strap for holding your DSLR in the front. All this is backed by Think Tank's lifetime warranty against manufacturer's defects.

I can fit a D3s, 14-24, 24-70, 70-200 in it... and even yet still compress/squeeze the bag enough by closing the main zipper.

I'm sort'a a different user as I'm actually a paraplegic. But I can see this bag having great appeal as when you're using it. You have a solid bag compressed to your back rather than a typical one that sits much further out. It will then keep the weight closer to you, keeping the centre of gravity in tighter, making things easier to carry and move around in crowds, when its tuck away under a seat or overhead, etc., or just when its moved around.

The zippers are great. The materials used seem solid. It has water protection and can fit a laptop up to 17 inches.

I just got the bag and need to play with it more. I originally thought it compressed on it's own, but there is a second zipper that does that. I sort'a don't like how that looks, when it's open, but you can fit a ton of stuff in this bag and I prefer a zipper rather than straps that would dangle.

With the stuff listed above, you could still fit - say another full sized camera body, or lens. or flashes It holds a tripod, a bunch of accessories. You can remove the main belt and put on their other action belts where you could add other modular rotation add-ons. There are some you-tube videos on this bag showing how it can be packed. I'm pretty sure I'm going to be very happy with this bag as I already am. Oh... it sort'a doesn't look like a photo bag either.

    Get out there and shoot!

I was originally attracted to this bag for its versatility. Although it can take up very little room, it does not offer sufficient protection for expensive gear. I also noticed that if the bag is not filled up or packed tightly you can feel your gear shifting around inside. I think it is a great idea for a backpack but not if you are entrusting it with the safety of often expensive photo/video gear.

Comments about Think Tank Photo Shape Shifter (Black):

As a run-and-gun filmmaker, this is a dream. I need to be able to pack light, and move quickly.I had been using the Think Tank Airport TakeOff Rolling case with Backpack straps for the better part of two years, and this shapeshifter backpack is so much more effective for my uses. Most of what I shoot are on-the-fly interviews, and bboy/breakdancing, and since most of it is out of town, it's nice having everything I need close by.In this bag, I roll with two bodies (5D, and 60D), 24-70 F2.8, 24-105 F4.0, and 14mm F2.8. A rode videomic pro, zoom H1 and wired lav, and a shoe-mounted light, round out the contents. My 15" Macbook Pro fits in the back laptop pocket, and tripod since snugly in the front pocket and provided buckles. The accessory pocket holds my computer and LP-E6 charger, 8 batteries, memory card wallet, filters, travel documents, etc.Best feature is that when expanded, no matter how much I put in the accessory pockets, it NEVER feels too bulky to zip up... and honestly, I'd say that I put a fair bit in.The only thing I need to carry by hand if I'm using them, are either my video monopod, or glidecam HD2000.Love this bag.

Comments about Think Tank Photo Shape Shifter (Black):

With some airlines recently reducing the size of carry on bags, the Think Tank Shape Shifter was the answer to conveniently transporting my gear. 5DM3 and 6D both w/grips, EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM, EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM, EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM, Extender EF 1.4x III and other smaller items. Did not bring laptop as it was not needed, but it would have fit. I was able to zip up the shape shifter to the smaller size and there was no question as to it being within specifications. On this trip I flew on a 757 to a single engine float plane and the size and weight of the bag was never a problem. I highly recommend this bag.

I just completed a shoot on the beach (The South Florida weather in January is very nice!). Since I hate to put my camera bag down in the sand I performed the entire 3 hour shoot with the Shape Shifter on my back. I was comfortable the entire time! I could not have asked for more.

Comments about Think Tank Photo Shape Shifter (Black):

Seems to be a Great Pack for airline travel (specifically carry on) and for packing gear on location. Durable and spacious enough to carry a 17" Asus laptop, two D800 bases; a 24-70,2.8; 700-200 2.8, 85, 1.8 lenses, 900 Flash and a few other small items. Biggest disappointment was that the lenses must be unattached, so plan on a little time to mount your lenses on location.

Used this to haul 1 camera, strobe, and 3 lenses in main compartment. Carried 2 spare batteries, rain jacket, memory cards, chargers, MAcBook Pro and tripod in the rest of the bag. Other than the tripod carry at night, the bag looked incognito with all the backpacks in Europe. No external give aways for contents. Fit perfectively into the aircraft on flight over. The RRS tripod was in the suitcase. Strap alignment was very comfortable.

Great bag. Carried a D3, 2 lenses, a flash, battery chargers, various filters, and all the needed accessories. Also packed a laptop, iPad, and all the associated cables and chargers. The bag fit perfect in the overhead bin of small regional aircraft. My only complaint is that everything is packed unassembled so it takes a second to get the camera out and snap a shot. Not the bag if you are walking around taking pics but perfect for traveling with your gear.

You can put A LOT of things! and also, you can use it as your regular pack just by zipping and SHAPESHIFTING it!

If you plan on using it while shooting it will be hard to switch lenses because you have to put it down.

Comments about Think Tank Photo Shape Shifter (Black):

I use it for landscape photography in the back country. Very comfortable. Plenty of padding to protect your equipment and keep it off your back at the same time. Easy to get to when needed, with plenty of space for the essentials you will need for a long day in the backcountry.

I also use it for run and gun photography when I'm in the big city like New York.

Problems with the bag? None that I have seen so far!

After going through literally about 10 different bags, I've found the one. In this bag, I keep on a daily basis, the following: Nikon D800 with grip, Nikon 50mm, Nikon 70-200 VRII, Nikon 28-70 2.8, SB-900, blower blub, Nikon teleconverter, ipad and or macbook pro, and many accessories. The bag is extremely comfortable, and doesn't look like a suitcase strapped to your back as most photo backpacks do. I can't say enough good things about the bag. To the people that say you can't shoot out of it, I say you should probably have your camera in your hand or on your shoulder anyway. Hands down the best bag I've used.

The photos on-line do not do justice to this product. I was concerned when I bought it that it would not be what I hoped for, but it is for more than I hoped to get. This bag is very well thought out in all aspects. I loaded all of my gear from my other bag and still had room for more but in a much more compact package.

I pack two camera bodies, two lenses, a flash and accessories into this bag and I couldn't be happier. It holds it all perfectly and doesn't feel super heavy! Well designed and seemingly durable!

Comments about Think Tank Photo Shape Shifter (Black):
