The pinestone gray Retrospective 5 Shoulder Bag from Think Tank is a small, discreet and simple bag designed for the photographer who carries a small system like one DSLR and 1-3 lenses. If you own a micro 4/3 system or a rangefinder, this is a bag worth considering. The interior dividers are customizable to accommodate the gear you carry on any given day.

The large front flap covers the entire bag and prevents anyone from seeing what's inside. The hook & loop closure is unique with its Sound Silencer system that eliminates the tearing sound normally encountered when you open a camera bag. This is especially valuable when you are shooting in quiet venues like courts, wedding services or chess matches.

The inside of the bag contains an organizer pocket that is perfect for a note pad, mic, or small pack of tissues. Two collapsible nylon pockets are inside and are designed to hold a flash or other similar sized accessory.

Outside, an expandable pocket is large enough for a regular size DSLR body. The back of bag has a wide storage pocket that is made to hold collateral material like paperwork, maps or a note pad. Additional webbing loops are found outside to hold some small Modular, Skin or Multimedia pouches. Or, you can attach a carabiner to it for quick access items like keys. Two side pockets will hold small water bottles or even some small shoe-mount strobe lights. Under the main flap, you have a business card holder.

The carry handle is removable and the shoulder strap contains some non-slip material to keep the bag stable while moving. There's also a breathable cushioned pad along the strap to aid in positioning.

For complete protection, there's a neat rain cover that can be rapidly deployed when the weather turns sour. The cover has been configured to allow the handle and strap to extend but not interfere with the security of your gear. The Retrospective is backed by Think Tank's lifetime warranty against manufacturer's defects.

The exterior of each Retrospective shoulder bag is purposefully simple, allowing photographers to inconspicuously blend into their shooting environment
The Retrospective 5 fits a standard size DSLR kit. A compact kit of prime or small zoom lenses fits easily with one lens attached to the camera body
The Retrospective 5 easily accommodates a Micro Four Thirds camera system with 3-6 lenses and accessories
The "Sound Silencers" underneath the main flap eliminate the loud tearing sound hook-and-loop makes while opening the bag. Simply release the Sound Silencer panels and cover the hook-and-loop strips to prevent the hook-and-loop from contacting
A clear business card pocket, for identification and spare cards, is located under the main flap
Hook-and-loop panels securely fastens the main flap down keeping valuable photo equipment hidden from view
An organizer pocket is located inside the main compartment. It gives photographers enough space for small, but significant, accessories necessary for a successful shoot
All the dividers inside the bag are removable so the interior can be customized to any photographer's set of gear
Inside the main compartment are two collapsible nylon pockets (one on each side). These pockets are tall enough to fit most flash units or other accessories. A hook-and-loop strap can be used to secure the contents or it can be tucked into the pocket for quicker access
An expandable pocket on the front of the Retrospective 5 can be used to carry a regular size DSLR body
A wide storage pocket is located on the back of the Retrospective 5. This pocket can be used to carry small maps, booklets or other paperwork
Removable carrying handle
A fully adjustable, canvas strap is integrated into the bag. For extra comfort, a breathable cushioned pad slides along the strap for optimum positioning. Sections of non-slip material on the pad helps keep the entire strap on your shoulder
Webbing loops on both sides of the Retrospective 5 can be used to carry some small Modular, Skin or Multimedia pouches on the side of the bag. Alternatively, a carabiner (not included) can be used to quickly clip accessories to the sides of the bag as well
Side pockets on both sides can be used to carry smaller water bottles and will even fit some shoe-mounted strobe units
The included seam-sealed rain cover was specially designed to keep the carrying handle and integrated shoulder strap outside the rain cover without compromising protection from the elements
Compatibility
One standard size DSLR with 1-3 lenses and accessories
A complete Micro Four Thirds or rangefinder camera system with 3-6 lenses and accessories

I was a little skeptical at first if this small bag would fit my SLR with wide angle attached and 2 other lenses but it worked out perfect. Although I might be defeating the purpose with packing tight and not being able to use all of the handy storage areas, It carries what I only need for my trip and its not too bulky and looks casual! Everything I look for in a perfect camera bag. It all depends on what you use.

I bought this based on a recommendation from a few dicussion threads and blogs. I used this to carry a Leica M8 with one lens attached and a couple lenses with the SD24 flash and a Polaris light meter.

Needless to say, all of these barely fit in this bag.

The shoulder strap is also waay to thick. The velcro silencer is next to useless..as you will just end up not closing your bag properly and have your expensive camera equipment fall into a concrete floor.

So I bit the bullet and bought the Billingham Hadley Pro. If you are buying this bag because you think the Billingham is expensive, I'm telling you that it's worth it...don't do what I did where I ended up spending more.

Comments about Retrospective 5 Shoulder Bag (Pinestone Gray):

I bought this bag to use with my Olympus OMD EM-10 on trip to Italy. In addition to the camera and kit lens, this bag holds my 40-150 lens, a 25mm 1.8, a 46mm 1.8, a wide angle converter, and my spare Panasonic LX-7 as well as a handful of accessories. I was concerned about the weight before I bought the bag, but I found that this bag is actually more comfortable to wear all day than some other, lighter bags. This bag is nice looking, solidly built, comfortable, and functional. I couldn't ask for anything more.

Comments about Retrospective 5 Shoulder Bag (Blue Slate):

The retrospective 5 was to small for my D600, 28-300mm and the 16-35 wide angle. The bag works just fine and hold s all my stuff, looks good and I very pleased

I am using this bag to carry a fuji mirrorless body, a couple of extra lenses, batteries and sd cards. Styling is good, shoulder strap is comfortable. Only downside is that it isn't big enough to fit an ipad (Retrospective 7 can fit one, but it is quite a bit larger in all dimensions).

Comments about Retrospective 5 Shoulder Bag (Pinestone Gray):

Very useful. When on vacation it does not look like you are carrying camera equipment. Bag is constructed very sturdily. I wish it was a little larger but not as large as the next size up in their line. I can put in a few filters a Canon 60D with a 24-105 lens attached. Holding the 16-35 lens with sun shade is a real squeeze. Also the pockets on the ouside ends are useless. As they are too small for even a small water bottle. Overall I like the bag a lot and would recommend the product to anyone who wants to look anonymous while carrying equipment.

Comments about Retrospective 5 Shoulder Bag (Pinestone Gray):

I also have the discontinued black version of this bag....

This new version of the Retrospective 5 bag, in Pinestone Gray, is clearly several steps above the previous one I own. First the fabric is much thicker and more robust offering more protection. Second it just feels and looks much beefier and the quality of construction is clearly evident. I would describe it as almost bullet proof!

I use this bag for street shooting and informal portraits with my Fuji X100S and a small TTL flash. I can carry everything I need to work with plus it has room to spare.

            Recommended!!

I bought this to use with my Fuji XE-1, and it's proved to be ideal. I'm able to carry the camera with the 18-55mm lens attached and the 14mm and 55-200mm lenses separately. The zippered back pocket provides plenty of space for filters and other stuff. Like all Think Tank products, it's very well made and will probably last longer than I will. It's attractive but it doesn't look like a bag full of expensive camera gear. An excellent product.

This bag is great in many ways. Offers good protection of my gear, a modern yet undercover look, and it is very comfortable to carry around. Going on a trip to Europe this summer and plan to use this as my main bag while roaming the cities. Reason I gave it a 4 is because I wish they had magnets built in so that when you choose to use the silent option, the flap would still stay closed.

I own the Airport Takeoff Rolling Bag and nothing but perfection. 5 years strong and no issues. When I needed a new shoulder bag for my mirrorless system ThankTank was the bag I wanted. I bought the 5 and am thrilled with it. The only issue I have is that I should have ordered the next size up. This bag holds my Fuji w/lens, two other lenses and batteries, SD cards. Not much else. I am not unhappy with the bag, just unhappy that I bought the smaller bag. The construction of the bag is as good as their roller bags and with that I am pleased. I will use this bag for small walking jobs, but will purchase the next bag up for when i may need more gear.

I love this bag. Think Tank has thoroughly thought out every aspect of its design and construction. It is beautifully made and each inch of space is wisely utilized. There are many pockets for batteries, extra lenses, cards and more. There is a rain cover for the bag included.

Access to your camera is just a few seconds away. I also love the fact that it does not look like a camera bag. There's no logo to draw attention to it.

This series of bags is truly great.

I tried to find something to complain about but this bag has everything that I might ever need.

Practical and sturdy photo bag, understated looking great at the same time. Would have given 5 stars, but wish I'd selected a bigger one to accommodate more gear.

Think Tank puts out an excellent product, and well worth the money. The material is very classy, and blends in as a regular day bag, which is nice when shooting in heavily crowded areas where theft can be an issue. There are plenty of slots and pockets to organize your gear, and I have a feeling the bag is going to last a long time, based on the build of the product. My only complaint would be the size. The description mentioned one DSLR and 1-3 lenses. I have a 6d, with a 135, 50, and 17-40. If I attach the 135 to the body, I can barely squeeze all of my gear into the bag. In addition, if I include my flash into the front pocket, the bag becomes bulky and does not truly close. I would suggest this bag for anyone who travels and shoots during the day with one extra lens. If you have any idea as to what you will be shooting ahead of time, you can always leave some things at home.

                                          The good:

The bag is well constructed from quality materials and it provides a high level of protection.

Although it's the smallest in the Retrospective line, it has adequate room for a medium-sized camera and one or two extra lenses or a mini tripod. It could fit a larger DSLR if you don't carry additional lenses or if you use smaller primes. You can configure the internal panels to create more space or otherwise accommodate your stuff.

It doesn't look like a camera bag. You don't feel like people see it and mark you as someone carrying camera gear.

                                          The bad:

This bag is basically a shrunken-down version of the larger Retrospective bags. The problem is they preserved all of the features of the larger bags even though this bag is too small for these features to be useful. For example, the side pockets are so small and tightly constricted that you can barely fit anything into them. On the inside of the bag, they preserved the many layers of internal pockets even though this adds considerable bulk. You can't use all of the pockets because you would quickly run out of space. So you're left with several useless pockets because the overall size of the bag is too small to accommodate all of the pockets being used.

They could have fixed this problem by ditching some of the pockets that make sense in a larger bag but just add useless clutter and needless weight in this smaller version. I think it's a lazy design attitude on their part, as they figured they could expand on the success of the larger Retrospective bags by just shrinking them down without thought to whether a smaller size merits a reconsideration of the design features.

One last thing. The velcro used for the main flap closure is extremely grippy. I finally covered it with the silencer flaps because I was tired of it snaring my clothing and any other fabric within range (such as nylon camera straps). It even attached itself to a bed sheet and pulled several threads on the sheet when I removed it. The silencer flaps let you cover the Velcro, which is good, but then you're left without a way to securely close the main flap. Less aggressive Velcro or an additional closure option (a button or strap) would be an improvement.

I use this with my Nikon D5200 and a lens or two. There is room for one lens, plus the one on the camera. I also fit a flash in there, no problem, along with a plethora of memory cars, chargers and other paraphernalia. It's easy to organize and customize with the included moveable and removable dividers.

The thing I like BEST about this bag, however, is the way it looks. No one ever thinks it is a camera bag. It just looks like a man-bag or messenger bag. No one would assume there is a substantial amount of camera kit in this bag. It's stylish, understated and practical.

I purchased this product as a gift for a comrade, co-worker who has recently taken an interest in micro-third format photography. He recently purchased a Sony NEX 6 with several lens collected over time. The bag was perfect the arsenal of lens and body with plenty of room for other accessories. He has nothing but good things to say about the durability, versatility and casual appearance of the bag with strong feature. The stitching is superb and better than any bag used to this day! Strap also has added comfort and padding. The only concern was the weight which seems a little heavier than appearance which is trivial when you consider the assurance that your equipment is well-protected. The versatility is that the bag will hold a DSLR and two lenses! As I was looking for this gift, I myself own a Crumpler, Domke, and Tamrac backpack for my Canon 5DmkII, I am now considering one for myself when I begin to delve into the micro-third system! I highly recommend this for anyone looking for a compact, portable and very versatile bag that is casual in appearance and doesn't scream out "CAMERA BAG!". Worth the purchase!

I was looking for a dedicated camera bag for my Panasonic GX-1 and asundry lenses, filters, etc. As soon as I got this out of the box, it was a winner. Used it on a 3.5 mile trail hike the other day, and it performed great.

It's a little heavy, but that's because it's well made from durable material and has a TON of pockets and they are thoughtfully placed and useful. Very, very pleased with the design and quality.

I am a long time hiker/backpacker so I've had a lot of experience with bags that work and don't work and I get irritated easily with bags that are "overproduced" (too much padding, useless features, etc.). This is the first bag I've owned for anything where the pockets and design were really thought out and actually work. Major plus is that it stays stable and upright when you pop open the top so you can get to everything easily without your bag falling over.

I also like that it doesn't look like a camera bag.

For serious hiking/backpacking, I'll be using an insert rather than this bag just due to weight and bulk. However for a short hike, I did just shove this whole bag inside my big backpack.

                                                  Highly recommended.

Comments about Retrospective 5 Shoulder Bag (Pinestone Gray):

This is a great bag to keep a very small DSLR and 1 to 3 very small lenses or your high end point and shoot with its gear. I tried to fit a Canon Rebel series DSLR with a Tamron zoom lens and all that goes with it like extra SD cards and battery with charger, the manual, cables and forget about the external flash and dispersion filter. It was just too small. No problems returning it and getting the Retrospective 10. Now that's more like what I need.
