Too many reviews treat this camera as one to replace a Canon 7D or Canon 5D, and, therefore, complain about its shortcomings relative to those cameras. That's just dead wrong. That is not what this camera is about.

I use a camera for scenic views in places like National Parks, and to record memories of interiors of museum, castles, art galleries, Bhutanese temples, Papua New Guinea long houses, etc. during my travels to the far corners of the earth. It is perfect for those activities. It has a huge sensor with pixel density roughly the same as that of the Canon 7D, and a high performance Digic 5 processor. It has an excellent stabilized lens. It has an excellent artuclated screen. It has a poor view finder. It takes brilliant pictures in outdoor settings. It takes totally usable pictures in the dimmest of lighting at ISO settings up to 3200, and quite acceptable pictures even up to ISO 12,800. It is the perfect camera for those environments. It takes HD video. The lens is somewhat slow, but its high ISO capability makes that not an issue. It is bigger than most compacts. I need to use hiking sticks to walk, so I use a belt attached device that holds the camera comfortably in a locked state, and releases rapidly for use. Its weight is totally tolerable for this transport method. I will use it where lugging my Canon 7D is just too taxing.

It uses a contrast focusing technique that is not the fastest, but focuses perfectly for my uses.

If you are into sports photography, or photography of any rapidly moving objects that you want to focus on qickly, and hold the focus, this is definitely not the camera for you. If you are into macro photography it is also not the camera for you. It has poor close focusing capability. It has a fixed 4x zoom lens, 28 to 112, so it is not great where large zooms are required.

I had an opportunity to try this camera and shot quite a few images. I love Canon camera and especially their G-series, of which I've owned three.

The G1X is very similar to the rest of the G-series in build and control placement. It's a bit larger and uses (gasp) a detachable lens cap.

PRO: Outstanding image quality with its large sensor.

CONS: Slow, inaccurate focusing and abysmal close focusing distance. Lens is a small aperture. Pronounced lag-time when shooting.

CONCLUSION: If automatic focusing speed and accuracy along with close focusing capability are not important to you, then this is a truly outstanding compact camera. If, on the other hand, you crave speed and accuracy, you'll be happier with Canon's G-15 (which I've also used). The image quality is amazing for a small sensor.

Comments about Canon PowerShot G1 X Digital Camera:

I come from a very well-schooled large format background and sell prints of my work for a living. The G1X is my current PS camera and I could hardly be happier with the quality of the image files for a camera of this size. The G1X does have its short-commings as others will point out, but if you want high IQ files to work with from a PS camera - then this should be on your short list. My best selling image of the last 2 years was made with this camera and I regularly sell 40 inch prints of that image. When I tell people it was made with my PS camera - they cannot beleive it!The majority of my BW work the last 5 years or so has been IR. This camera does long exposure IR quite well with a 760nm filter. Not as good as my 5Ds, but very useful non-the-less.If you know what you are doing or want to learn how to do it really well - then the G1X will not disappointed you. I'm giving it 4 stars only because it does have a few limitations and it is not the PS for everybody. For IQ I'd give it a 9+ if I could and I'm a 30 year+ Zeiss fan.BTW - f/5.6 gives the best IQ on my copy - FYI

Comments about Canon PowerShot G1 X Digital Camera:

A bit of a quirky camera, but our needs required a silent camera with low light capability. Replaced an awkward and difficult to use silenced (blimped) camera. The G1 X delivers if you are willing to adapt to the camera. Mechanically solid and produces high quality images.

It's like haveing a 35mm with a 28 to 112 lens; I set mine where the front dial changes the zoom range from 28mm to 112, in set increments, it goes 28mm, 35mm, 50mm, 85mm, 100mm, and 112, so there's not guess work in focal lenght...I'm in hog heaven...

Comments about Canon PowerShot G1 X Digital Camera:

I've used Powershot G-series including G2,G6, G9, G12, and now this. Bought the G1X when the Mk2 was announced, I like and use the swivel screen and the optical viewfinder, however bad it is. I use as rangefinder style camera either in addition to dslr or solo if I want to travel light.

The biggest difference to me between the G1x and the G9/12 is the front to back form factor/thickness. I usually carry in large inside breast pocket, and I will place a strap on this one as I feel it's easier to drop than the smaller g series preceeding it. No complaints though on usability, it fits my hands better when shooting than any prior g series.

The image quality is superby, and the Highspeed full resolution on the custom dial isn't too bad either.

Comments about Canon PowerShot G1 X Digital Camera:

I bought this camera after already having a Canon 5D Mark II. The 5D is great and takes beautiful pictures. However, it, and its lenses, are pretty bulky. The G1X is small enough to put in a jacket pocket and leave it there, so you can always take pictures whether you plan ahead or not.

Comments about Canon PowerShot G1 X Digital Camera:

            I will make it simple

            Pros:
Excellent image quality since sensor size is big.
DSLR like control in Av and M mode.
Solid Construction and feels good in the hands.
Nice alternative to carrying DSLR (I own 5D Mkii and iii).

            Cons
Focussing: Forget about focussing close (I am not talking about macro but close focussing especially if you zoom).
            View finder is useless.
No TTL flash (called auto in G1x) when you put your camera in Manual mode. This is a serious limitation since most of the time I shoot in manual mode and I have to manully dial in the flash power. BTW I am using 270 ex external flash with G1X)..

Overall it is a good camera if you do not focus close, do not use view finder and get used to manually setting flash power (this is hard when you are moving in a Birthday Party in low light condition). Overall I like this camera but I hope Canon will address the above in G2X..

I use this as a backup for my SLR but carry it when the other would be too much to carry.
Good image quality but sometimes misfires before focus.
I wish Canon would go back to sending a manual. For this camera the digital manual is 240 pages, who could memorize all that. I alway take my manuals along.

I have a Canon 5D Mark II that I love, but I don't always want the bulk when I'm just taking a few pictures. I've had a number of P&S cameras to fill this role, but I've never been happy with the quality of their pictures. The bigger sensor on this camera really does the trick - these pics are so much better than any P&S I've had before. Also, the Manual setting on this camera is very user friendly.

I bought this camera to carry around when I did not want to take my 5D MARK II or my 7D. This camera is a little slow to focus and has noticeable shudder lag, as do most other camera in it's class. That being said, It is solidly built, has great image quality, shots raw and jpeg, has a external hot shoe, will accept a cable release, shots in camera HDR photos (you need a tripod for best results),it's rakes great video, I could go on and on. It will do about anything you would want a little carry along camera to do. I would definitely recommend this camera to a friend.

Comments about Canon PowerShot G1 X Digital Camera:

Yes, it has some shortcomings with respect to close focusing, flash idiosyncrasies, size, and optical viewfinder, but the image quality is excellent, and more than makes up for its problems. On thing that really irks me though is that you can't store the lens hood on the camera, and it's a pain fishing for it every time you want to use the camera. I'd still buy it again in a second though.

bought it for traveling and im pretty happy with it! I own 2 of 5d mark ii and various lenses but I hate carrying them around when I travel. Last time I was in japan i had one body and 2 lenses with me and it was such a pain to walk around with them. I decided to buy a little camera after the trip, and this is it! I only shoot raw and love having a pop up flash! Now I feel pretty confident to travel anywhere with this little camera and not worry about carrying $$$ expensive cameras/ lenses. Perfect little camera to play with when you travel!

Comments about Canon PowerShot G1 X Digital Camera:

I previously owned a G1 and G11 and loved both. When the G11 eventually broke, and was requiring too much to fix, I looked toward getting a newer model. I passed on the G12 & 15, feeling the G11 was better than either.
I had considered the G1x when it came out, with the favorable reviews regarding image quality. But negatives such as a "non" macro and bogus viewfinder, along with a steep $800 price tag, steered me clear. However, in April of this year, I noticed B&H Photo advertising the G1x for $250 off, Still without a second camera, I gave it a shot. So glad I did. Built like a tank, yet compact. Impressive SLR-like resolution. Lots of welcomed features, including a ND filter. Well worth it at the reduced price, and for it can live with the reported downsides.

Comments about Canon PowerShot G1 X Digital Camera:

Looked long and hard for a high quality point and shoot that is still user configurable and think that this one is the best in that respect.

Yes, it's as big as a smaller mirrorless camera and, yes, it costs about the same but the image quality is AMAZING and I don't have to futz with changing lenses. Canon's built in zoom lens is far better quality than the compact zooms on the mirrorless cameras and the reach is good enough. Picture quality is not quite as good as my 7D but so close that you really have to blow up the image to see the difference. ISO1600 is very usable. I've shot interior photos at ISO6400 and the images are good enough for prints less than 8x10. Camera build quality is outstanding. Must agree with most other users that macro mode just doesn't get close enough; HDR absolutely requires a tripod; focus is a bit slow, and after the photo is taken the lag to display the picture on the screen is longer than I would like. Getting 250 photos per charge.

Comments about Canon PowerShot G1 X Digital Camera:

The quality pictures, ease of use and sensor are outstanding on this camera. I shoot more often than I should on automatic and was amazed at G1X's ablity with backlit scenes and picking up rich color. I read all the reviews before purchase and noted the viewfinder and focus speed issues. B & H was very helpful in helping me weigh these drawbacks versus the camera positives and my needs. I am quite happy with the results of my purchase.
