As a Canon top-of-the-line flash, the Speedlite 600EX-RT takes the best features from existing models and adds functionality for enhanced digital photography. The 600EX features a new wireless multiple flash system using radio wave communication that provides more precise control over as many as five groups of flashes. There's also more power, with a guide number of 197' (60 m) at ISO 100, a zoom flash head that covers a 20-200mm range. Compatible with the AF frame of all EOS cameras, the Speedlite 600EX-RT even works perfectly with the 61-Point High Density Reticular AF found in the EOS-1D X and the EOS 5D Mark III.
The 600EX-RT offers radio controlled, two-way wireless transmission up to 98.4 feet, among up to 5 groups with a total of 15 individual speedlites. Communicating on 2.4 GHz frequencies, it doesn't have the same directional limitations of traditional wireless optical transmitters. Where other wireless signals can be interrupted by physical obstacles, radio controlled systems excel. 15 transmission channels are available, selectable manually or automatically, and radio transmission IDs can be set to prevent misfiring in the event of signal interference on the same channel
The included color filter holder and two orange color filters multiply your creative options--the holder is compatible with Canon as well as third-party gelatin filters. The 600EX offers several other improvements--it's been redesigned, with a metal hot shoe, improved dust- and water-resistance and body strength, plus the ability to control flash functions and settings from the camera menu. A dot matrix LCD panel and backlit button deliver much-improved visibility.
The flash supports all current versions of TTL, including evaluative E-TTL II. This is great for photographers who shoot high contrast or reflective subjects, like those encountered in wedding photography. Photographers can now capture every detail from the black of tuxedos to the white of wedding dresses. The 600EX-RT is compatible with all E-TTL II/E-TTL autoflash EOS DSLRs.

I have 3 of these units as I use off camera flash often. One is on camera the other 2 are off camera on stands or held by my assistant. I like the built in radio control and one button to swivel and tilt the head. The previous units have seperate buttons that took longer to adjust. It comes with a couple of color gels which I have yet to use. So far it looks like the exposure sensor is very accurate. I do use external battery packs with them. The menu is extensive and you'll need to play with it for a while to get used to it. After a few shoots it really becomes easy. Since I purchased my first the price has come down and it is affordable.
The GN that Canon gives is very misleading. It is as accurate as their claim that the 5D III has continous auto focus in video mode. A claim they have had to pull. The GN number is a specific formula that photographers have used from the beginning. It is specific so we can compare apples to apples at a glance. My Metz 60 series flashes have a GN of 197. When I do need high power the flashes made today do not compete. I still recommend these flashes as they are good. Just feel a little insulted at Canon's advertising practices. You can't fool all of the people all of the time.

I own 4 of these, replacing 2 580EX IIs. I use them with a 5D Mark III and 7D. The features are incredible and the display is much easier to use than any other flash I've owned. If you own a 2012 Canon camera or later, the 5-group Gr mode is the ultimate in easy and complete remote control: you can have the A flash in ETTL, the B flash in Manual, the C flash in Manual with a different power, and D and E different as well. All can be easily controlled from the master, whether it's another 600EX-RT or the ST-ET-R3. However, I was disappointed with the mechanical fit and that's why I didn't give the 600EX-RT 5 stars. The 580EX II battery door easily opens and closes with one finger. All 4 of my 600EX-RT's have trouble closing the battery door; you have to push in on the top of the door with one finger while you slide the door up to close it with another finger. This problem doesn't happen if there are no batteries in the Speedlite, but the force of the batteries pushing up prevents the battery door from closing. The fit of the hot shoe is also poor. It feels like a cheap, stiff chuck of metal sliding into the camera, compared to the 580EX-II which slides into the camera's hot-shoe like a glove. The 600EX-RT door and hot-shoe are both secure, but for this price I expect a more refined feel. I still love this Speedlite, but come on, Canon - get your act together. This flash is just a little bigger than the 580EX II, so any snug-fitting accessories like the Sto-fen Omnibounce won't fit. The 600EX-RT comes with a nice filter holder that can even tell your camera which filter is installed so you get the correct white balance. However, the filter holder is an awkward L shape that feels vulnerable to breaking in transportation. The filter holder and filters come with their own bag.

I have 3 Canon 600ET-RT I use them for on location shoots, events and portrait work. I use the Canon ST-E3-RT trigger with al thee units. It has been reliable and when needing additional light I gang all three lights together to get 180w/s of light on my subject. Very useful in full daylight.

Comments about Canon Speedlite 600EX-RT:
I haven't even begun to touch the features of this flash, but I'm already in love. Upgraded from the 420EX and can't believe the difference in battery life and recycling time, for starters -- never missed a shot! Nice, even lighting. The built-in bounce card is convenient. Can't wait to test it out as a master/slave combo with my 430EX.

Used this flash for the first time at a Triathlon event this past weekend and I was amazed on the nighttime pictures I took of the event and the fast recycling! Pictures came out perfect every time! As a noobie on this flash it has a lot of features that I am still learning about them that will keep me busy praticing!
Altough it is my first professional flash and have nothing previous to compare with, I think it is still the perfect match for my 5D Mark III.

This is the third 600EX-RT flash I've purchased. The wireless two-way radio communication works great, and was way overdue for Canon. The build quality is one of the best ones on the market, and the menu layout is 100% better than previous models.

The unit came well protected and was delivered on time. I bought it along with the ST-E2 optical transmitter. I had not used a portable flash with a camera mounted transmitter before. I find the 600 EX-RT very versatile in that it can be fired any one of four ways, from use as a primary camera mounted light source to being fired remotely as a slave. It can also be employed as an off-camera flash with either a TTL sync cord or wireless transmitter. It's a terrific product once you master setting your preferences and navigating the complex menus. There are ample accessories available for this flash unit.

I chose this flash because it is the best hot-shoe flash Canon makes for the 5D Mk II camera. It has the highest guide number and the most features. This flash is an incredibly flexible device; it has many applications and features that I will probably never use, but it's my opinion that it's better to have something and not need it than to need it and not have it.
