Complete with built-in radio transmission wireless functionality, the Speedlite 600EX-RT sits at the top of Canon's on-camera E-TTL / E-TTL II compatible flash lineup with a powerful guide number of 197' at ISO 100 and 200mm. This two-way 2.4 GHz radio system provides added reliability and a range up to 98.4' among up to 5 groups with a total of 15 individual Speedlites. This system also does not need direct line-of-site like traditional optical-based transmission and will work through obstacles.

For added coverage and functionality, the flash's zoom head can reach from 20-200mm, with the option for wide 14mm coverage when the built-in diffusion panel is used. Also, the unit can tilt from -7 to +90° and rotate 180° either left or right for complete bounce capabilities. On the back of the 600EX-RT is a backlit dot-matrix LCD panel that displays the status and allows users to easily access and change settings. Additionally, the flash is durable with a redesigned contact construction and improved dust and water resistant sealing.

Other capabilities of the 600EX-RT include a stroboscopic mode as well as high-speed, first and second curtain sync settings for more control over your image's final look. The flash is powered by 4 AA batteries which provide a recycle time of 0.1-5.5 seconds, though it does have a port for an optional external power pack. It comes with a color filter holder with case, a light orange filter, a dark orange filter, a mini stand, and a Speedlite case.

I maybe can open a leason and talk about the pros of Canon's newest speedlite – 600EX-RT, and that is how much I like this unit.

I heard people said some like like "If you don't take advantage of the radio transmition of the 600EX-RT, you are simply just using a more expensive 580EXII". I strongly disagree with the statement like this. These people might have never used 600EX-RT, and review it based on its specification. You don't give comment like this if you have never hands on with these 2 speedlite.

Well, everyone know about how good the radio wireless is, so I am not going to talk about it. I am going to talk about how good 600EX-RT is even if you only have one unit and use it on the camera hot shoe instead of wireless. The pros are (in comparison to 580EXII):
    1. Better GUI
    2. Easier to operate based on new designated buttons.
    3. Better Auto White Balance.
    4. Support 61 points focus system.
    5. Wider and Farther
    6. Sound to remind you battery cycle complete

I believe there are more pros, and I think it is worth the price difference in between 580EXII and 600EX-RT for use stand alone. So please stop saying the 600EX-RT by itself is just another 580EXII, it's not, it's much better than 580EXII. and it is even better if you have more than one of it, or have a ST-E3-RT.

So if you do not have an external flash for Canon cameras and thinking about buy one, get this! If you already have only ONE 580EXII, 580EX, 550EX, sell it and get this one before you invest more in the old technology. If you have MANY previous version of Canon flash, maybe stay with them with the 3rd party wireless trigger because they might not have great resell price in used market while they are still functioning well.

I own 4 of these, replacing 2 580EX IIs. I use them with a 5D Mark III and 7D. The features are incredible and the display is much easier to use than any other flash I've owned. If you own a 2012 Canon camera or later, the 5-group Gr mode is the ultimate in easy and complete remote control: you can have the A flash in ETTL, the B flash in Manual, the C flash in Manual with a different power, and D and E different as well. All can be easily controlled from the master, whether it's another 600EX-RT or the ST-ET-R3. However, I was disappointed with the mechanical fit and that's why I didn't give the 600EX-RT 5 stars. The 580EX II battery door easily opens and closes with one finger. All 4 of my 600EX-RT's have trouble closing the battery door; you have to push in on the top of the door with one finger while you slide the door up to close it with another finger. This problem doesn't happen if there are no batteries in the Speedlite, but the force of the batteries pushing up prevents the battery door from closing. The fit of the hot shoe is also poor. It feels like a cheap, stiff chuck of metal sliding into the camera, compared to the 580EX-II which slides into the camera's hot-shoe like a glove. The 600EX-RT door and hot-shoe are both secure, but for this price I expect a more refined feel. I still love this Speedlite, but come on, Canon - get your act together. This flash is just a little bigger than the 580EX II, so any snug-fitting accessories like the Sto-fen Omnibounce won't fit. The 600EX-RT comes with a nice filter holder that can even tell your camera which filter is installed so you get the correct white balance. However, the filter holder is an awkward L shape that feels vulnerable to breaking in transportation. The filter holder and filters come with their own bag.

    Much better than my 430ex

    By Jennlynnz

    from Maryland

    Comments about Canon Speedlite 600EX-RT:

I bought this to replace my 430ex, what a difference. Construction, metal hotshot is very sturdy and rubber grip is awesome on the sides. The battery door is two step now, with a slide and then manuever to open but far less of a hang up than the construction of a 550 that I've played with. The flash is far better than my 430ex which I bought before I planned to go into event photography. The buttons are much easier to find your way around and the icons are easier to read. I can not wait to learn this flash! The light is beautiful, glad I held out for this one. Also seemed to be better on battery usage but I've only used it at one event thus far, so we'll see if this part truly was improved upon.

      Comments about Canon Speedlite 600EX-RT:

I waited a long time to purchase a flash. I am not skilled with a flash, but after doing a good bit of research, this seems to be the top or near the top of the line from Canon. It contains a ton of feature that I have yet to discover on my own, such as remotely connecting and triggering other flashes wirelessly and even other cameras if you have them set up for another angle. That's pretty awesome right there.

There are many options to dial into, literally. The dial on the back sets most of the options, which is similar to the DSLRs you can connect them to. The backlighting of the options/menu display makes it easy to see what you're doing in low light or no light.

It mounts on the camera pretty easily and has a locking mechanism. The flash itself can rotate 360 degrees around and tilt 90 degrees I think and down to 7 degrees. So you can bounce off of something behind you or the ceiling if you wish.

I've taken a few test shots and wondered why I didn't purchase a flash like this to begin with. Now my photos look as though they belong in a magazine. You shouldn't be disappointed.

It even comes with a few gels that fit over it and a few other accessories.

      Comments about Canon Speedlite 600EX-RT:

I have had a Panasonic flash for a few years and I've gotten by with it, but it was frustrating. When I put this flash on my camera, it was like getting a new camera. First of all, simply the fit of the flash to the body of my canon 5d was a major improvement... It's very secure and not flopping around (or falling off like my Panasonic did). Additionally, it communicates with the camera consistently shooting both in manual and automatic. With the other flash if I shot photos in a setting with backlighting and then turned to shoot from the other side, the photo would come out completely overexposed. I challenged this new flash in a variety of settings and was beyond thrilled to see how consistently the images came out. I honestly feel like I've been shooting in the dark all these years... I'm so happy to finally have a flash that does my camera justice. To anyone contemplating getting this flash or trying to save money on a less expensive one, I have to tell you, don't waste your money on the inexpensive flash... It's not worth it. You have a nice camera and you need a flash that can keep up with it or what's the point? This flash is well worth it!

I am a wedding photographer. I do not typically use a flash until the reception but found that the flash I was using was not strong enough for some terribly low lit reception venues. It was not strong enough to my liking anyway. So I bought the Speedlite 600EX-RT and I LOVE it! It was perfect! I shot a wedding this past weekend and I will never go back.

I bought this flash so that I could get rid of my Pocket Wizards and use two flashes at a wedding reception. So far, I love the upgrade! Thinking about getting a third flash. A feature that I'm finding most useful is being able to change the flash output (as I like to control it manually as opposed to ETTL) for flashes that are being used remotely via the one on my camera. I don't have to physically go to each flash to change the output which is very convenient for me during weddings!

I purchased 3 Speedlite 600EX-RT's and the Speedlite Transmitter. I upgraded from 580 EXII's. The radio's on these flashes are awesome and the menu system is greatly improved. The best part is being able to use the master flash or the transmitter to control each of my flashes. This is helpful when I want to make changes during a wedding reception. I can make the change in a second instead of 5 minutes (with having to lower the stands to get to the flash units). The group mode is great but I've only tested it out, I haven't used it for a shoot yet. I also love how the "master" color is different than the "slave" color. Less room for error that way. I highly recommend these and I'm sure I'll have even more good things to say once wedding season starts.

                  Comments about Canon Speedlite 600EX-RT:

I'm very impressed with this flash. The communication between the units makes setting up easy. I like that you can control everything from the master unit without having to walk around to each remote slave unit to change settings. You can even trigger a camera wirelessly with this flash.
                  Cons:
Wireless range isn't very far. They should have been able to triple it easily.
When using as a camera trigger, flash won't fire.

                    Comments about Canon Speedlite 600EX-RT:

I tried a different brand (not a low end flash) but was disappointed with the output. I bought this 600EX-RT and began a comparison to the "other" flash.

Such a huge difference in output. Further, still in comparison, with the 600EX-RT I could shoot at 1/4 power and at a lower ISO.

With an external battery pack the recycle time was virtually instantaneous! The red light never went off - shot after shot.

                      Comments about Canon Speedlite 600EX-RT:

Finally got around to learning the menu. It seems to be user friendly but I need to sit down with it a few more times to really get the hang of using the two lights as a master and slave. It is a solid piece of equipment. I am selling my Quantum lights and going light with the same effect.

                        Comments about Canon Speedlite 600EX-RT:

As as speedlight alone it's powerful, quick to recycle and easy to use. Excellent for fast and easy fill flash or on camera bounce. I use it with my 1DX cameras. The radio control is excellent.

When I got my first one I intended to use it with my PocketWizard FlexTT5 transceivers. Unfortunately the PocketWizard FlexTT5s were still not reliable so I purchased the Canon ST-E3-RT transmitter along with a second 600EX-RT. It works like a charm and is FULLY funtional with TTL or manual. It does everything I had hoped (as advertised) the PocketWizard system would do but didn't do reliably.
