The Canon EOS 5D Mark III DSLR Camera (Body Only) is a full-frame 22.3MP DSLR featuring exceptional still image and movie recording capabilities. Integrating Canon's new DIGIC 5+ Image Processor and 14-bit A/D conversion, this camera is able to produce superbly detailed imagery with immense low-light sensitivity that is further aided by an extended ISO range up to 102400. Image quality is further enhanced by the new 61-point high density reticular autofocus, including up to 41 cross-type AF points and 5 dual diagonal AF points for ensured sharpness. iFCL metering works in conjunction with the AF system and uses color information from scenes to produce accurate exposure readings using a 63 zone dual-layer metering sensor. HDR and Multiple Exposure modes provide greater creative opportunities and help you to reduce the amount of post-production time needed to produce high quality imagery. The 5D Mark III is also capable of recording full HD video with manual exposure control and in multiple frame rates, including 1080/30p and 720/60p. Still images can also be recorded up to 6fps.

Image review is possible using the 1,040,000-dot 3.2" Clear View II LCD monitor, which features a high-transparency, reflection resistant multi-coating for adequate viewing under bright conditions. The Intelligent Viewfinder also integrates a superimposed LCD providing you with exposure information and features a 100% field of view.

A highly durable magnesium-alloy body surrounds the components and offers increased dust and weather resistance. An updated EOS Integrated Cleaning system also helps to reduce and remove dust within the camera body. Several of the physical controls on the camera body are fully customizable for a more efficient workflow and more convenient handling scheme. Dual CF and SD memory card support also increases the compatibility of the camera. Support is also provided for the optional Canon Wireless File Transmitter and GPS receiver for remote logging, tracking, and sending of your imagery.

22.3 Megapixel Full-Frame CMOS Sensor
A newly designed 22.3MP full-frame CMOS sensor is incorporated into the 5D Mark III providing you with highly detailed, rich images with a maximum resolution of 5760 x 3840 pixels. The sensor is also features a high S/N ratio and larger individual pixels for increased visual depth and cleaner looking images. A new photodiode structure and increased photoelectric conversion rate also helps to improve the overall sensitivity of the sensor, resulting in a reduction in image noise and improved high ISO performance.
DIGIC 5+ Image Processor
Processing speed and power are increased to promote significantly greater overall performance and response from all aspects of the camera. New algorithms are incorporated in order to promote better noise reduction for higher ISOs and chromatic aberration compensation. The increase in processing speed also helps to improve the continuous shooting rate, bringing it to 6 full-resolution frames-per-second.
14-bit A/D Conversion
The 14-bit signal processing helps to improve the quality and gradation of images by producing more natural, smooth-looking results. An increased ISO range is also provided, from 100 to 25600 in standard modes and 50 to 102400 in expanded modes. The ISO range can be controlled and customized depending on the user's preferences, and additionally an auto ISO mode can be employed. This extended sensitivity range helps to counter frequently changing and difficult lighting situations and significantly minimizes noise when photographing with even the top-rated sensitivity.
61-Point High Density Reticular AF
The newly designed 61-point autofocus interface helps to ensure critical focus no matter how complex or difficult the situation is. Featuring up to 41 cross-type AF points (with f/4 lens support) and 5 dual diagonal AF points (with f/2.8 sensitivity); this AF system is highly accurate and extremely low-light sensitive.

The dedicated AF menu tab permits quick and easy access, eliminating the need to navigate through settings menus in order to modify your AF settings. Autofocus point selection is broken up into 6 different methods-Spot, Single Point, Single + 4 Adjacent Points, Single + 8 Adjacent Points, Zone Selection, and Automatic AF Point Selection-as well as a dedicated AF configuration tool for control of AI Servo AF III tracking parameters.
iFCL 63-Zone Dual Layer Metering Sensor
An intelligent metering system works in conjunction with the autofocus system and independently analyzes 'Focus, Color, and Luminance' within the scene for the most precise exposure settings possible. The 63 zones cover the entire image area with great detail and the dual-layer design permits a wider sensitivity to different wavelengths of light.

The dual layers are split into a red/green channel and a blue/green channel; which counters the red light sensitivity bias electronic sensors inherently have. A series of algorithms are employed to combine data received from both layers, with the resulting exposure reading being extremely accurate regardless of the shooting conditions.
EOS HD Video
Full HD video recording is supported in multiple formats, including 1080/30p, 24p, 25p; 720/60p, 50p; 480/30p, 25p. While recording video, a 4GB automatic file partition is employed in order to gain longer continuous recording times, up to 29 minutes 59 seconds. Both All i-frame and IPB compressions are supported as well as the standard H.264/MPEG -4 AVC codec. Embedding the time code is also possible for greater convenience when recording with multiple cameras.

Video performance is further enhanced with the ability to manually adjust your exposure settings and audio levels while recording. By employing Live View, you can view your recording on the LCD and make settings changes with a dedicated menu tab on the fly. The DIGIC 5+ processor also dramatically improves video response times and helps to reduce color artifacts, aberrations, and moiré.
Rugged and Efficient Design
Constructed from magnesium-alloy, the 5D Mark III features a toughened housing that provides enhanced dust and weather resistance. Its ergonomic design also produces an intuitively navigable interface with an emphasis on lessening hand strain and increasing functionality. Handling is simplified and natural with this body due to the incorporation of customizable controls: You can make shooting settings with just your right hand, and fast image check and image processing operations with just your left. The redesigned grip offers easy holding when shooting or carrying the camera, while the rubber skin coating has been engineered for all day comfort in your hand and also coats the camera's card slot cover. Additionally, there's an internal headphone terminal and dual card slots supporting both CF and SD / SDHC / SDXC memory cards. Three recording modes are ideal for a variety of workflows: Auto switch media instructs the camera to swap cards as soon as one card is filled, a great feature for long shoots. The camera can also record separately to each card. For extra security, you can set the Mark III to generate an automatic backup by recording the same file to both cards at the same time.

The 5D Mark III also boasts a dual-axis electronic level indicator displaying vertical and horizontal tilt on the LCD monitor--either alone or during Live View shooting. The indicator may also be displayed in the intelligent viewfinder, if you prefer.

A newly designed shutter is equally as durable and has been tested up to 150,000 cycles. The lightweight, carbon fiber blades also provide support for the increased 6fps burst rate.

The body construction also features extensive gasketing for maximum dust and weather protection, even at connection points around the lens, hot shoe, and memory card slots. Further dust protection and removal is aided by an updated EOS Integrated Cleaning system that uses a vibration-based dust removal process.
Intelligent Viewfinder
The optical viewfinder provides a 100% field of view with 0.71x magnification and a wide viewing angle of 34.1%deg;. A refined design integrates aspherical lens elements into the construction and lessens distortions and color aberrations while providing greater clarity for composing imagery. In addition to a clear view, a superimposed, transparent LCD is also incorporated. This Intelligent Viewfinder mode can be toggled on or off quickly at the touch of a button, allowing you to remove all camera information for unobstructed viewing. The information provided when it is on includes a customizable display of focus points and grid lines, which can also be directed to appear outside of the image area.

Canon's Dual Axis Electronic Level can also be used in conjunction with the Intelligent Viewfinder and visually displays pitch and roll angles, aiding in properly level horizons. When used in the viewfinder, this feature can display +/- 6° of roll and +/- 4° of pitch in 1° increments when held horizontally (the inverse is shown when held vertically). The electronic level is particularly useful for landscape photographers and those working with tilt and shift lenses whose angle of view is especially critical.
3.2" Clear View II LCD Monitor
The expanded 3.2" Clear View II LCD provides high quality viewing with a 1,040,000-dot resolution and anti-reflection coating. This allows for sharp and clear viewing in even the brightest of conditions and displays images and videos with great detail and richness. The display also features a viewing angle up to 170° for review from the side or below.

The Dual Axis Electronic Level is also functional in on the LCD and can display a full 360° of roll and +/- 10° of pitch in 1° increments. When used in conjunction with Live View mode, a smaller display is placed over the image. Live View mode permits real-time image review and can also place grid lines over the image for compositional help. You can also zoom into and navigate within the image when in Live View and use the grid lines for minute control and precision over the alignment of your photograph.
Multiple Exposure and High Dynamic Range
Multiple exposures are possible in-camera and can be recorded onto a single file using 4 distinct settings for control. When in Additive mode, this closely resembles making multiple exposures on film and layers each exposure; manual exposure compensation is required. Average mode layers the images and automatically compensates for the final exposure, eliminating the unintended possibility of gross under or overexposure. Bright mode is specifically designed for photographing in uniformly dark scenes with a bright subject, such as a studio environment. Dark mode functions inversely, and helps to eliminate overly bright sections of the image including reflections and highlights.

A High Dynamic Range (HDR) mode is also incorporated and allows for the creation of HDR images in-camera, reducing the time needed to manually overlay images in post-production. When using this mode, a series of 3 bracketed exposures are made of the same image, then automatically integrated into the same frame, resulting in a photograph without blown highlights or blocked up shadows and a long middle range of tones. This mode is especially useful when photographing scenes with a great deal of contrast.
Wireless and GPS Compatible
The 5D Mark III is compatible with the WFT-E7A Wireless File Transmitter as well as the GP-E2 GPS Receiver (both not included). The WFT-E7A, which supports 802.11 a/b/g/n and sports a built-in Gigabit Ethernet connection, provides LAN and Bluetooth image transfers and features an FTP mode with automatic image resend function to ensure file delivery even if the signal momentarily drops. The transmitter also has EOS utility mode and WFT server mode, and is capable of performing time sync multiple cameras on the same network. The GP-E2, which connects via USB or Hot Shoe, automatically embeds location data into the images' metadata, including latitude, longitude, elevation, and the camera's orientation in relation to a compass reading when shooting. It also has a GPS time sync function, particularly useful when a project is shot among different time zones. Both of these accessories do not compromise the 5D Mark III's dust and weather resistance and are designed to the same rugged specifications. 1
Silent Shutter Mode
In both single shot drive and continuous shot drive, a Silent Shutter mode can be employed to significantly reduce the sound the camera makes when shooting.
Electronic Level
By pressing the INFO button an electronic level can be engaged and will appear on the LCD monitor to indicate the horizontal and vertical tilt of your camera. This is a very helpful feature for all photographic applications, but particularly landscape and architecture photography.
Optional Battery Grip
The optional dedicated Battery Grip BG-E11 (not included) features buttons and a multi-controller. It delivers seamless performance regardless of whether the camera is in vertical or horizontal orientation. The grip takes 2 LP-E6 batteries or an included AA battery magazine, and is useful in counter-balancing large lenses during handheld shooting.

I've been taking family portraits for almost 3 years now. I went from a Canon T1i, to the 7D, to 5D Mark III.

Anyone looking to upgrade from the 7D has a tough decision on their hands, as the 7D is a great camera. After reading hundreds of reviews, I decided to take the plunge.

I received my camera yesterday, and already used it for a family portrait session (natural light). All I can say is WOW! I use Lightroom to edit all photos taken ~ brighten eyes, soften skin, etc. Instead of spending hours in Lightroom, I was able to turn the photos around in a fraction of the time. The clarity is undeniable. I was able to crop the photos and not lose any sharpness (to the naken eye).

I performed a quick comparison between the two cameras using my Canon 100mm f2.8L IS USM. This comparison really doesn't do the 5D3 justice, but at least it will give you a good idea of the clarity, color, brightness, crop factor variation and sharpness difference between the two cameras.

Hope you find this useful, as I would have during my comparision shopping.

I shoot weddings professionally. I use a journalistic style where I need to respond to a shot quickly. Lots of useful new features. Focus seems to work better from a technical standpoint. To me, they are also holding back on some featurs so they will always be able to come out with something new on the next model. This I understand. What I don't understand is going backwards with features. The ability to see a highly visible focus point PRIOR to focus lock is gone. They have technical reasons for doing this but its hard to get used to if you had the Mark II, use manually selected points, and shoot where split seconds count. They made it better with firmware, but its still frustrating. Also apparently a fairly common issue is the joystick is fickle/inconsistent on many builds. The place where you rest your left fingers on the case while reviewing a shot is now angled, creating a very cool looking apearance and also making it much harder to hold in this position. You could hold it by the lens but if you shoot 1000's of images in one day you will know what I mean here. I wonder how much they tested it with real photographers. Overall I am happy (not thrilled) with it, so I am keeping it. It's the only option now at this price/preformance level.

Comments about Canon EOS 5D Mark III DSLR Camera (Body Only):

Excellent quality, but don't like it with larger zoom lenses. Found it hard to get a good balance when using with Canon 70-200 L or the 28-300 L series lenses. I use the 1DX as my main camera and although it is heavier, it is much better with big glass. The 5D III would be much better suited when paired with a 16-35 or 24-70 for example.

Although I am far from being a professional photographer and own 2 full frame Nikon cameras (D700, D800), I simply wish to comment that this camera is brilliant. Great LCD display and much easier video mode compared to the D800.

Upgrading from the 7d, which I also love, but the noise control is just not manageable. Used to primarily shoot sports in well lit conditions, but over the past years have migrated to portraits and weddings and the noise issues with the 7d were just too much. Love this camera!

I have to echo the rave reviews here. No weakness to this camera at all. The most obvious differences that I have noticed is the plethora of focus points and the ridiculous low-light performance. You can practically take pictures in the dark with a slow lens and get something usable. Won't regret this purchase!

Comments about Canon EOS 5D Mark III DSLR Camera (Body Only):

I upgraded from a Rebel T3 that I have been using for the past 3 years....a pretty big leap! The difference is beyond amazing! The images that I was able to produce with my T3 and 135L look pathetic compared to the ones that I've produced with this camera so far. I liked my Rebel images but I LOVE my Mark III images.

I use it mostly for images of my children, nature and macro. It focuses so quickly compared to my Rebel. I used to throw out so many photos of my children that ended up OOF when shooting with a shallow DOF. I was very, very pleased with my first set of photos of them running around and playing....ALL of them were keepers. I didn't miss a single shot and that was shooting wide open or close to it for all of them. The difference here alone makes it worth the money spent.

I knew this camera would be larger and heavier but comparing side by side to my Rebel it is gigantic! I wondered if it would take some time to get used to the size but it felt perfect the first time that I held it.

No complaints whatsoever. I'm in love with this camera!

I love this camera! its low light ability is exactly what I need. Such a solid built camera. Its color saturation is spot on, its new focus system works fast and accurately and its exposure range is great!

Before purchasing this camera, I used the Canon T2i. This upgrade was much needed for the full frame, the ISO sensor, and the video expanded ability. This purchase was well worth the value. The 5D MK iii exceeded my expectations providing the sensor to stunningly capture my images both photography and video. As well, the camera body is more durable and heavy giving me a great sense of feel when shooting. Though I realized that some of my kit lenses for my T2i aren't compatible with my 5D, the majority of my lenses are. As well, I just shot a video project and have no complaints. Awesome purchase - I'm completely satisfied.

Amazing image quality! BH has awesome customer service as well!

I waited untin June of 14 to get this camera and I wish I had gotten it sooner! The AF is pure pleasure, and accurate too! The sharpness of the images are a huge upgrade from the 7d bodies I had been using for several years before.

So far I have nothing bad to say about this camera. It's very user intuiutve if you came from Canon, and pretty easy if you didn't.

I use this camera for Weddings and Portraits and it blows me and my clients away!

                          This camera + my 50mm 1.2 and 85 mm 1.8 are magical!

Comments about Canon EOS 5D Mark III DSLR Camera (Body Only):

I am amazed at the image quality, even at ISO 25,600. I do freelance work for a local newspaper. The Mark III enables me to take low-light photos w/o flash. I also appreciate the higher frame rate on the high speed setting. Not quite ready for sports coverage, but very, very good at catching movement & sequence. Love the larger LCD screen. Love the "silent" (quiet, actually) shutter. Love that I can use both CF and SD cards. Can't wait to do in-camera HDR and multiple exposures. Worth every penny.

Comments about Canon EOS 5D Mark III DSLR Camera (Body Only):

The Mark III is a really fine full frame camera delivering picture quality unmatched by cameras with smaller sensors. However, it is not perfect by any means. The autofocus is good but not as amazing as marketing would have you believe. The lack of built in flash is justified by "most pros use a speedlite anyway" but this isn't technically a pro body... and even if it were, there will be times you miss having a built in flash (such as when you leave your speedlite behind for reasons of space). Not having a speedlite means not having optical transmission for remote speedlite shooting, thus forcing you to buy an external transmitter. There are some issues with using SDHC cards due to write speeds (well documented on the Internet). That being said, if you want a full frame DSLR and are sticking with Canon, this is the one to get, if only for lack of a better choice. The best part of this camera is that it is relatively easy to learn for a semi-pro body and going through the manual took no more than half a day - I think it took me longer to go through the 600EX (speedlite) manual. And the camera itself is very well put together.

I use the 5D mk lll for mostly people photography. When processing the RAW images in Lightroom 4 and then Photoshop there is little to no color corrections! The images are wonderfully sharp. I love the sensor cleaner! The camera is remarkably light compared to the original 5D. I could do without the video component I am strictly a Photographer. If I could afford another body I would buy it in a minute!

Comments about Canon EOS 5D Mark III DSLR Camera (Body Only):

I have slowly evolved from my Nikon FM2 days to my first DSLR a 40D via an unfortunate loss of my 5D MkII eventually to my current piece of marvelous gear - 5D MkIII.

I am not a professional photographer and do not make a living from my photos. I travel a lot for my primary vocation and have loved the opportunity it creates for my primary avocation. I have been shooting ONLY still for the last 30 years and just enjoy and gift my photos and create large prints for display at home. I have been shooting pretty much everything - from kids sports, kids drama and dance, social musical events, weddings, nature, portraits etc. I am primarily a natural light photographer (but have a flash just in case). I have used some good L glass, some manual Zeiss and Voigtlanders (both primes and zooms) and a large Bigma. With my 5D MkII I was very pleased. Since my entire gear got stolen on a trip to Europe, I have now replaced it with the MkIII. I have shot primarily graduation ceremonies, travel and some portraits with this new Body over the last two weeks. And Boy am I elated!

Yes, I have seen that the interface changes on the MkIII has been a key complaint amongst all the reviews I have read so far. Folks, I spent an entire 14 hour flight duration reading the new manual - agreed this is the poorest reading material; but for my needs, the results I have seen so far are just stupendous. I did contemplate getting the 6D briefly, but since I shoot only in RAW, I decided to go with the 5D MkIII given that in camera HDR in the latter is in RAW compared to the JPEG in the 6D.

With the wide open 135/2L focussing could not be easier. I can focus at any point I pretty much fancy given the capability that the 61 focus points offer. Even with the 50mm/1.4 wide open, I just cannot express how grateful I am to the focussing system to be able to pin point my composition literally.

Noise up to ISO 6400 was just not there! Again given that I shoot natural light this was just amazing. I remember a shot on my 40D with similar light conditions (smog in Beijing does not change a lot) inside the Forbidden City. The noise at ISO 1200 made some of my 200mm shots both blurry and noisy. I was just amazed at what this camera did for me in similar light conditions - 200mm handheld at f8 (1/5) and the result was what convinced me that my hands got steadier over the last 5 years (and I am not young :-)) The sharpness and the clarity (I am using the "faithful" photo setting) is what made spending my money worth it.

Given that I do a lot of night photos (Bulb) I am just looking forward to my next few years with this marvel and handing these over to my kids to enjoy beyond that.

If I have to complain, I wish the body was a little lighter, but at the same time I have to accept how stable my Bigma feels with this body. So this is just complaining for the sake of complaining, and during those hikes where hauling my 35lbs becomes a nightmare. The results help soothe away all the pain though.

I did shoot for a few weeks with tha borrowed Nikon D800 and comparable glass, but stuck around with the Canon given the low-light and better noise handling and over all the PIN POINT accuracy of the focussing system. Shooting wide open at 1.2 at 50mm or 85mm is just not the same anymore. Thanks Canon.

B&H your promptness and helpful staff made my life easy as always.

Comments about Canon EOS 5D Mark III DSLR Camera (Body Only):

The focus system in the 5D MK II was god awful. This makes this camera amazing. Now my wide shots are actually in focus without having to be at f/8+. I use this for photography and video. Its a solid machine. Still really pricey though. I really like the quiet mode. Very crucial when shooting a church wedding. I hate that Beep! CLACK CLACK CLACK. So loud. I also really like the ability to move over to an SD once the CF card is full. I now never miss a shot.

I've had all versions of this camera and I am so pleased with the mark iii. The larger, clearer LCD screen is amazing, the way it handles low light is awesome, I love the dual slots, the sound of the new shutter when it releases just sounds nicer. There is a learning curve when it comes to the new focal point system but I am happy to have more.
