Comments about FEISOL Tournament CT-3442 Rapid Tripod Legs:

Don't be fooled buy the reasonable price, this tripod is world class. The legs deploy and retract smoother tha any other brand of carbon fiber tripod I've tried, and I've had 'em all. It's extremely light, but rock steady plus with a head attached works at eye-level for me and I'm 6' tall. Another big plus is the accessories are reasonably priced, especially compaired to Gitzo. If I were to nit-pic, it would be the bag. The legs have to be folded 180 degrees and even then it's a very snug fit. It will not close with the weight hook attached and it's a little flimsey. I use Domke bags in the field, so for me it's no big deal. Other than that, there are no complaints. With a quality compact head, you can have an outfit weighing 3.5 lbs. or less that will handle most of cameras.

Comments about FEISOL Tournament CT-3442 Rapid Tripod Legs:

First, a little perspective:My go to tripod when not hiking is the Gitzo 2531. When hiking, I use a small carbon fiber Manfrotto which was showing signs of the abuse I have given it over the past few years. Time for a new small tripod. The compact Gitzo seemed way overpriced so I was looking for alternatives that were lighter than the Manfrotto, with quick release legs.Mike and Kelly B.'s review on this site caught my attention, especially Kelly's OCD comments and very entertaining evaluation. I've now had the tripod for a few weeks and have fallen in love with the combination of the tripod with the acratech ball head. This is a light and extremely sturdy tripod. It extends several inches above the old Manfrotto and is rock solid while holding a Nikon D600 with up to a 70-200 1.4. ( monster of a lens).Construction is excellent. I love the fact that it has no center column so I can open the legs and get as low to the ground as I want. I originally set out to replace one tripod but have replaced two for the price of one. I have not even looked at the Gitzo since getting the Feisol. This has become my go to tripod for all occasions. Extremely happy with my purchase. Excellent value!!

Comments about FEISOL Tournament CT-3442 Rapid Tripod Legs:

I originally purchased a CT-3372 on a limb. It wasn't very expensive (comparatively), so I decided to take the gamble. After all, if it was worthless, I could send it back to B&H and go buy the real deal. Turns out it was the exact opposite of worthless. It was built like a tank, lightweight, supported more than I could load on it, and had zero signs of cutting corners or thoughtless design. The only issue I had was trying to figure out which Feisol to buy. Their nomenclature system isn't terribly intuitive or easy to remember, but that's hardly a complaint.

As much as I like my CT-3372, it has a WH-200 on it. That doesn't really make it too friendly for an easy-to-pack travel tripod. Now, I don't want to be unscrewing my WH-200 and replacing it with a ball head and vice versa all the time, so I went out for a second tripod. Something a little less heavy duty, smaller, lighter, but still the same rock solid design. The CT-3442 was the perfect choice.

Here's what I wanted in a travel tripod sans head:

          - Weight < 3 lb.
I want a tripod that is very light. The more weight I carry, the less photos I take. This one ranks in at 2.5 pounds by itself.

          - Min height < 10"
For macro shooting, I need to be able to get pretty low. This one comes up about 7" from the ground when at the lowest angle lock setting. Add in gear, and that's about 10" of sensor height. It is certainly possible to go lower, just have to forgo angle locks.

          - Max height > 50"
For this tripod, add in a ball head and lens collar/pro-size body and that is within 1" of eye-level for me. I'm 5' 11.7".

          - Max load > 15 lb.
These are always a joke. They claim it holds 22 pounds maximum. Well, I loaded it up with a gripped 5D III, 800mm, and Acratech GV2. That's about 20 pounds total, 2 short of the stated max. I then got beneath the tripod and suspended myself (I'm 142 pounds) from the mount. One of the legs started to collapse with resistance. I'm going to take a wild guess that it supports a lot more than 22 pounds. Whether or not you want to top load a simple tripod with 80 pounds is another question.

          - Folded length < 20"
18.9". It's surprising to see how short 18.9" is. With the Acratech GV2 it fits beneath my CT-3372.

          - Little bowing when loaded
This one doesn't bow a bit as far as I can see with all gear stated above. I couldn't tell how well it bowed when I, too, was on it, but since the leg lock failed at that weight it was impossible.

          - Absolutely no center column
Don't like 'em. Never use 'em. You can buy a center column for this thing from Feisol if you really want one.

          - Absolutely no skimping on quality
Just like the rest of the world. This tripod is well made and to the point with its design.

          - Reversible legs
This tripod can, which helps eat the extra height added by any head on it. Just be aware that how well it can fold up depends on how bulky the head is.

Quick note: the bag that comes with this CT-3442 is about the exact height and width of the tripod itself, which means you can't store it in that bag with a head unless the head is small enough for near perfect reverse folding (which is pretty much never given the knobs). The bag that came with the CT-3372 was larger. It's about seven inches longer than the tripod and a less form fitting. I'm not really sure why they went with an almost skin tight fit on the CT-3442's bag. It is a nice bag... just a bit short if you want to leave the head on. Of course, when you're traveling there's no real point in the bag. You just attach your tripod to your pack or carry all three to four pounds of it in hand.

          Bottom line:
If this tripod does what you want, there's a very high chance you won't regret buying it.

Comments about FEISOL Tournament CT-3442 Rapid Tripod Legs:

My husband and I were in the market for our first set of tripod legs (and a ball head) to take with us on our vacation to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. I'm pretty OCD about things, so I researched everything EXTENSIVELY prior to making this choice. Our requirements were as follows:

          - Lightweight combination of tripod legs and ball head (no more than 3.5 lbs combined) - I carry our camera backpack with all of our gear (and my husband carries our hiking bag with all of our other items), so I needed a combination I would be able to physically lift and carry with us. Carbon Fiber construction was a must here for us.
          - Collapsible down to a compact size - again, since we use the tripod exclusively for hiking.
          - Twist lock legs for easy set up and take down - I hate leg clips, but that's a personal preference. Leg warmers are also a plus...and I grew to appreciate them in the brisk mountain air haha.
          - Rock solid stability - I would legitimately cry if our expensive camera gear toppled into a waterfall or river because of a flimsy tripod.
          - 4 leg sections - I initially only wanted 3 sections, but the smaller size when collapsed down of the 4 leg section tripods won me over.
          - Variable height that would work for me (5'5") and my husband (6'3") without either of us being uncomfortably hunched over.

I was frustrated when first starting my research, because all of the forums I initially found exclusively recommended Gitzo tripods...which was way out of the price range for what we wanted to spend.

Further research led me to narrow down our choice to either the Feisol CT-3442, or the Induro 8X CT214. The Feisol won out in terms of weight (~1 lb. lighter), and portability (~2 inches shorter when folded); but the Induro had waaaaaaay more reviews on B&H's website. I typically rely very heavily on reviews, but we went out on a limb and purchased the Feisol, even though there only like 3 reviews at the time (all positive, mind you)...and we could not be happier with our choice!

This tripod was lugged EVERYWHERE with us, and was used daily during our 2 1/2 week vacation, and it performed like a champ! It was lightweight enough for me to carry with no issues. And we had this tripod set up on cliffs (with steep drop offs), at the top of waterfalls (the dry part, of course!), in streams, on rocks in streams...and it didn't miss a beat. I was initially worried that it wouldn't be super stable with the fourth leg section extended, but it was rock solid - even in brisk winds, I was never worried that it would topple over. Our heaviest lens (Canon 70-200mm f2.8 IS) combined with our camera body (Canon 650D) were no problem for this tripod (when coupled with the Feisol CB-40D ball head...which is also FANTASTIC).

In closing, this has been a fantastic addition to our collection of camera gear...we got so many wonderful long exposure shots of waterfalls on our trip! And we cannot wait to use this tripod again!!

Comments about FEISOL Tournament CT-3442 Rapid Tripod Legs:

This is no toy, this is a full size tripod, very well made, and unbelievably light and compact. I have the largest Feisol CT3472 for supertelephotos and other heavy duty applications, but wanted an even lighter and smaller "travel tripod" for hiking landscape and macrophotography , using either a compact camera or a prosumer DSLR with wide to medium telephoto (180-200mm). I have paired this CT3442 with the Arca Swiss p0 head and Sunwayfoto 64mm discal clamp, and the legs do fold 180 degrees over the properly arranged head/clamp, and the tripod and head does fit into the small-ish bag. Note, if you want to keep it in the bag, the short spikes might be better than the long spikes, which definitely won't fit in the bag when on the legs.

Comments about FEISOL Tournament CT-3442 Rapid Tripod Legs:

I purchased this tripod to replace my heavier but more sturdy Gitzo for long backpacking and hiking trips. I climb a lot of mountains here in Colorado and like to take the tripod to the summits with me, so the lighter the better. I wanted something super light, easy to set-up, and sturdy enough to do astrophotography in light wind. I definately feel like I made a great selection after meticulous research. The Tournament 3442 provided me with every feature I asked for. I did not get the center column and found I really don't need it. The tripod was very easy to set-up for shots, much easier than my Gitzo, due to the Rapid legs. Amazing product, highly recommend.

Comments about FEISOL Tournament CT-3442 Rapid Tripod Legs:

This was a long awaited upgrade from a set of low-end aluminum tripod legs. There is a huge difference! These are lighter, stiffer, and fold up smaller than my old tripod. I couldn't ask for more than that!

              Quality seems very good.
