How to Set Up and Shoot Awesome Interviews with LED Lights from Vortex Media is all about making your presentations more professional and consistent. It doesn't matter what video camera you use, what questions you ask or what your budget is, without the proper lighting to make your subject look his/her best, the interview will not come off as a success.

This DVD, produced by a very seasoned and knowledgeable videographer/producer, will show you how to achieve the best results by not only teaching you the basics of good lighting, but various other aspects of shooting including camera placement, composition, depth-of-field, exposure, and white balance.

Doug focuses on LED lighting for several reasons. LEDs are cost-effective, lighter to carry around than traditional hot lights, are faster and easier to work with and are better for the environment since they require less heat to operate. The DVD will lead you through what you should have equipment-wise as well as steering you away from what you really don't need. Once you've mastered Doug's protocol, you may decide never to use your older tungsten lights again.

If you can sit through the non-stop promos for courses and services at the beginning of the DVD, you'll find some good info. You might want to watch a couple times and take cheat sheet notes. And, afterward, you might wonder if the author is in bed with LitePanels.

Comments about Vortex Media DVD-Video: How to Set Up and Shoot Awesome Interviews with LED Lights:

At first I felt I was getting ripped off by sitting through a bunch of commercials for the instructor's workshops. That was a bit sleazy. Then, the Litepanels product line was pushed on viewers throughout. That is a great manufacturer, but there must be others that work as well and one must wonder if there is some quid pro quo going on. Next, we get WarmCards (a product of the instructor's company) pushed on us. In between all of this, there is a lot of excellent information for both beginners and professionals.

I used this training aid to learn how to set up 3 point lighting and camera distance control for video interviews. The instructor is not pushy about his approach to lighting but suggestive.

Comments about Vortex Media DVD-Video: How to Set Up and Shoot Awesome Interviews with LED Lights:

I've been lighting video for several years using tungsten lighting and had used LED for a couple of green screen shoots. I've recently struck out on my own and am going to use LED exclusively, so this video was of interest to me. First the good news: If you're brand new to lighting video it does have several good tips. One especially is to build your own kit. Do not purchase a preconfigured kit. Then, of course he talks about how to set up the lights and camera, the advantages of LED, etc. However, here's the bad news. I had a couple of real problems with it. First, he doesn't take his audience into account. If someone is purchasing this video, chances are they are just starting out and don't have a lot of money. The CHEAPEST light he shows costs close to [$] and most are well over that. Sure, LitePanels makes a great product, but his audience probably can't afford them. And, there are much cheaper options available online. I've built an entire kit with 2 panels, stands, a reflector and a LED fresnel for under [$]. Is it the best? No, but it works and it's what I can afford right now. He also shows cameras that are several thousand dollars. Again, not thinking of his audience. Showing expensive equipment like this could discourage someone from getting into video. He also doesn't mention reflectors AT ALL! To talk about lighting without this basic piece of equipment is really bad. If I can get a fill light with a reflector, and use one of my LEDs for a kicker, I've just saved myself money! Also, the first 10 minutes or so are just a pitch for his seminars and hands on classes. This REALLY annoyed me. There are lighting classes all over the country. You don't have to travel to Maine. To put this at the beginning of the video is cheesy and off putting. If he wants to pitch his seminars, put it at the end, and label it appropriately. So, overall, I would recommend it as it's a good video, but skip the first one or two chapters. Also, it would be nice if he'd put out one on how to light LED on a budget.

Comments about Vortex Media DVD-Video: How to Set Up and Shoot Awesome Interviews with LED Lights:

if you are now starting out and looking into getting at getting your first set of lights and your strongly concidering LEDs. STOP! and then buy this DVD. i looked all over the internet and i didn't get the definite answers i was looking for on LEDs. I didn't know what i would need for my interviews or what accreeories i would require and this DVD answered that for me.

However i found it very annoying that for the first 10 munites the presenter spent alot of time reffering to his classes and workshops.

Unfortunately i feel like they are capitalizing on the lack of information out there for novices on LED lighting technology. Without this DVD i would have probably spent a lot of money on equipment I didn't need. Is this DVD worth the money? NO WAY!! for the price i chould have gotten a four box set! but unfortunately most lighting DVDs are outdated and practical information on LED lighting it dosen't seem to be abywhere else.

        Great Introduction to LED Lighting

Comments about Vortex Media DVD-Video: How to Set Up and Shoot Awesome Interviews with LED Lights:

This video would be a great value at half the cost or at twice the length. While it's an excellent video, it should be titled "An INTRODUCTION for How to Set Up..." because of what it does not cover and because it only provides one setup example, and that example is not typical of 95% of interview setups.

            The video provides:
            - Good information about the characteristics of the two common types of LED lighting instruments
            - A solid introduction to (Jensen's style of) three (or four) point lighting
            - An excellent presentation of all the process steps of doing video interviews

The video is well produced and Jensen's script and presentation style is very good. But, as he conveys early in the video, if you really want to shoot awesome interviews with LED lights you need to attend his full day training course, not just for the hands on pracice but to get all the information that should have been included in this video but was not.
