The GP-E1 GPS Receiver from Canon is a convenient tool to enhance the organization of photos and recording of data for photographers constantly on the go. Used exclusively with the EOS-1D X, the GP-E1 is a compact and durable accessory that automatically appends accurate geographical coordinates and cardinal points as Exif data for both images and videos taken with the EOS-1D X.

Featuring accurate clock adjustments and synchronization, Canon designed the GP-E1 to share the same rugged and durable exterior construction as the EOS-1D X without adding any additional bulk. Incredibly lightweight, this receiver integrates seamlessly with the camera's extension system terminal, allowing the hot shoe to remain accessible--while still being powered by the main camera unit. Able to withstand harsh weather conditions, the GP-E1 is a great enhancement to the EOS-1D X for those who wish to take their EOS system out into even the most remote environments.

Rugged, compact, and designed to integrate seamlessly with the EOS-1D X's construction.
When in use, the GP-E1 Receiver will automatically record the geographical information (latitude, longitude, altitude, and cardinal direction) of videos and photos whether the camera is held vertically or horizontally. Detecting altitude is even possible from inside an airplane or helicopter.
Accurately adjusting the EOS-1D X's internal clock is easy because it can use the UTC (Universal Coordinated Time) transmitted from the GP-E1 with a margin of error of about 0.01 second.
The GP-E1 is designed to enhance the workflow of professional users by incorporating global information into an image or video's Exif data. For example, photojournalists and other users can utilize the GPS data to organize their stock photos by location.
Includes GPS Receiver Software, as well as Map Utility software that uses information recorded by receiver to show shooting location/direction on a virtual map. Additionally, ImageBrowser EX software, also bundled, updates Map Utility and makes managing and searching for images easy. It also displays shooting information.

Note:In certain countries and regions, the use of GPS may be restricted. Be sure to use GPS in accordance with the laws and regulations of your country or region. Be particularly careful when traveling outside your home country.

Comments about Canon GP-E1 GPS Receiver:

I was hired to do some legal work over a large area. Over 1,000 photos submitted. With the Google Maps app, I was able to send the attorney exact locations off every image, with thumbnails appearing on the map...they were very impressed. Well built and it fits beautifully and snugly to the camera. This is just a brilliant photographic tool. It paid for itself instantly.

Comments about Canon GP-E1 GPS Receiver:

I recently used this on my hunting property to located deer stands and feeder locations in the middle of the woods. When viewing the photos on the map, I was shocked to find where they actually were. (I thought I was in a different location on my property.) However I confirmed the actually location with a handled GPS device as well.

Unfortunately I lost the device while hiking my trails (had it on my 1DX hanging on my side and it must have worked it's way loose). However I actually used the photographs I had taken to find where the last photo having GPS coordinates were, and where the 1st photo without GPS coordinates were. After retracing my steps, I was able to locate the device....not an easy task amongst all the leaves, fallen branches, etc. I will keep a check on it more frequently and make sure it is attached firmly.

I was very pleased with the results and accuracy. As well, I was pleasantly surprised that it had no issues in locating satellites while amongst tall trees. As others have stated though, if you don't leave your camera on it must "re-find" itself which could take a few seconds. If you shoot photos before it finds satellites, no problem though.....just no GPS coordinates attached to them.

Love it and glad I bought it.

Comments about Canon GP-E1 GPS Receiver:

Very sensitive GPS receiver, powered by the camera battery, not in the way during normal handheld operation of the camera. One word of caution though. If you use a large L bracket with your camera, make sure it can accommodate this accessory being attached to the camera.

Comments about Canon GP-E1 GPS Receiver:

Installation was extremely simple - just attach, change settings in menu, calibrate compass, and you are ready to go (there is also an option to allow the device to update the clock automatically). Integrates into Lightroom Maps. I've used for about a month and see no change to the camera's battery life. Have been leaving the GPS attached since the camera still fits in my backpack.

Love this handy little tool to help geotag the locations of my photos. Would have liked to have seen this built into the camera itself, but still happy with the purchase of this GPS receiver. Haven't really noticed any effect on the battery life of my camera and the unit synchs onto a signal very quickly.

Only used it once. It's small and lightweight. The build quality looks nice. Weather resistance matches that of EOS-1D X. It took some for the first connection. Information available: longitude, latitude, GMT, elevation, and compass. Elevation may not be available depending on the signal, and sometimes unreliable. Canon should really make only one module for both GPS and wifi. Or, design a splitter so that both can be connected.

Comments about Canon GP-E1 GPS Receiver:

I have been using the GP-E1 pretty much full-time since purchasing. I use Apple's Aperture programme and it seamlessly logs and displays the coordinates of my Raw files. It seems very accurate, to within a meter or so of my exact location. The only (minor) issue is that the compass is not fully functional with my 400mm f/2.8L IS. I've searched this issue on Google and others have also reported that there are some issues with the compass when using the 'older' superteles. This does not affect GPS accuracy at all, just the compass.

I "glued" the GPS to the camera a it's there all the time now. This streamlined my workflow as I don't need to geotag my photos with .gpx files anymore.

The only issue is with camera (EOS 1D X) standby mode, because if you took a photo immediately after, the photo probably wouldn't be tagged.

After years of manually geotagging my photos I now have my 1D X photos automatically geotagged. Amazing to see an aerial view of my tagged photos which show exactly where and what time the shot was. I just leave the GP-E1 on my camera and don't even know it's there anymore (other than my photos are tagged). Very easy to use- just attach it, turn on GPS in the menu, and that's it.

Comments about Canon GP-E1 GPS Receiver:

I travel the world and wanted to have a method to identify where in the world the photo was taken. I think the GP-E1 will do that for me. I will know better in a few weeks. The compass / level funtionality helps me to confirm framing since I developed a verigo issue a couple years ago. All my photos were 15 degrees askew. I hope this will help me as one more check in the framing process of people, buildings, ruins and landscapes.

Comments about Canon GP-E1 GPS Receiver:

The GPS connect easily and picks up satellite reception quickly, sometimes even in doors. Since I travel a lot having it imbed the GPS data in in the picture file makes it easy to chronicle our trip
