Excellent System
I put this in my living room (20x20), for general use (general TV and Movies). I picked up this system to add surround sound (never had before) to my entertainment.

The YPAO microphone made the audio settings PERFECT. I didn't use the YPAO at first, and thought the sound quality was "Uh.." and was somewhat dissapointed. I connected the microphone and put it where I sit, and went through the simple onscreen setup and left the room. Came back and re-ran my test movie, WOW!!! Huge difference!
The subwoofer will rattle my windows if I turn it up to max. But at the suggested mid level, it is just right. Not to loud, not to soft.
The pre-defined EQ settings for Movies and Music are decent. A bit echoie for my taste, but sometimes I turn it on.
My only complaint is that when my display with HDMI with ARC (Audio Return Channel) turns on and syncs with the reciever, the receiver switches to AV4. I have to reselect the HDMI input source. That or turn off ARC and get an optical cable (defeats the purpose of ARC). A bit frustating when I first turn my setup.
Hopefully a firmware update will allow one to set "TV Audio Input" = HDMI on the reciever. Or if ARC = On, then "TV Audio Input" is non-selectable.

Once I finally got it set up,I love it. Beautiful sound when listening to my iPod, radio and of course movies/TV.
I have set up stereos many times over the years, but not for the past 10 years. I figured this would be a snap. But it took my wife and I several hours over 3 days to get it all set up: Blue Ray, CD Player,cable box/DVR, FM radio. We constantly would have some components working and not others. Two trips to sound store to buy accessories soured us. HOWEVER,keep in mind we are not good at setup. If you are a novice like us, Good Luck. It was very frustrating. My wife finally figured she needed a coaxial jack (another $19.99) and we did it. We also bought heavier speaker wire than the thin stuff included, and we are glad we did. So how is the sound? TREMENDOUS. Especially at the 5-speaker stereo setting. Sunday morning jazz playing now and the piano, bass, everything is perfect. Blues really sounds great, as does good old rock n roll. Very clear sounds. Powerful. For the price, you won't go wrong. Happy with the product. Wish there was room for more speakers. 5 in my living room is great, but would like to have the capability to play more speakers out on my porch. But I knew that going in.

I have been very pleasantly surprised with this system, we are using it in a 22' x 24' family room. We were looking to add surround sound for a flat screen that was lacking "clear sound" and this system has been a good match so far. We have used the system mostly for sports events and so far the system has met or exceeded my expectations. Set-up is very simple and our only challenges came from our own access limitations.

Set it up was very easy. Have it hooked to a HTPC and a LG 47LM4600 TV. HDMI conections work great. Sound is clear while listening to online radios and Mp3. Its plenty of power for a small to medium size room. Mine is 12 by 18 Ft.
The wire that comes in the set is enough, but kind of low gauge. It worked ok though.
This is far much better than the DVD all in one home theather I had before.

The clip type spreaker connections are much too close and make it very difficult to connect speaker wires. Banana plug connections are much easier and simpler. I had to use heat shrink tubing on the pin type banana plugs to keep the connections from shorting out. Easy to use YPAO setup once speakers are connected. The sound is the typical great sound like the previous Yamaha receivers I've owned.

Using the YPAO system makes this a very easy speaker setup. The receiver has all the inputs I need for the system I have and includes HDMI inputs which were not available on my previous Yamaha system.
I did find the clip type speaker connectors on the back difficult to use. They are small enough that decent size wires need to be trimmed.

I wanted a resaonable priced surround sound system and started out with a less expensive unit that left me totally disatisfied so I looked again, read all the reviews and priced the various systems before deciding on the YHT-397BL. I have another Yamaha Home Theater System in another room, a higher end item at that but this unit sounds even better than the high end unit. The YHT-397BL sounds so good that what was the second TV room has become the premier room becuse of how good the unit sounds.

I did a lot of research and evaluated systems from onkyo, yamaha, denon, pioneer etc and was also looking to put together a separate component based system which kinda was going over my budget even for a decent system. During evaluation this one from yamaha was on my list but not as a first preference, but with the price it was a looking like a perfect fit within my budget and specs I was looking for. I decided to go with this and I tell you what, I'm very pleased with this purchase and my choice for the price. It actually surprised me with it's performance and I'm more than satisfied with this product. It sounds great, has very nice surround effects and the receiver has a lot of connectivity and features. The sound is clear and loud (although I don't use high volume often as I live in an apt). The bass effect is also perfect and the subwoofer seems to be more than adequate for my setup. This system has completely transformed my entertainment/tv experience, without breaking the bank!!

Excellent value with many superb features. The system delivers outstanding sound performance for movies, tv, or any type of music sound listening. It was highly rated and at a terrific price point. Easy to set up, good remote, decent user manual. The speakers appear lightweight but really deliver, and the sub woofer produces thunderous lows. The only small negative is the center channel which could use a little more punch. The automated sound calibration feature works really well. I was concerned when I moved and there was not room for my beloved large Bose speaker system. As it turned out, no need to worry. Pleasantly surprised at the amazing sound performance from this system. Highly recommended and would definitely buy again.

This is a VERY good starter system but it needs a better sounding center speaker. The center speaker sounded just about the same as the TV speaker. I realize that this is an entry level system but I still think the center speaker should be a little better. I bought a better center and it sounds GREAT! I have it in my bedroom and it works perfectly. I have had a more expensive Yamaha system in my living room for about 15 yrs and it still sounds great so I believe this system should last just as well. Overall I'm very pleased with this purchase. I do kinda wish I'd have bought the next step up Yamaha system, though.

I recently purchased this system not know what it could do. I recently got a smart tv and knew I needed to update my old system for one with hdmi hook ups. This system was very easy to set up in less than an hour I was listening to the radio and a short time later my tv had its great sound. It was very simple to change the presets to what I wanted my tv dvd and record player to be set as. I would recomend this to anyone who wants a great system for a small room and anyone looking to upgrade their TV and Movie watching experience. I know I will whoo my friends this weeks football games.

I did a lot of research on Home theater systems. Consumers report recommended Yamaha system and the reviews were very helpful in making my decision to buy. From receiving the box to playing CD's and FM took about one hour. Illustrations were clear and easy to follow. I enjoy solid bass sounds the YHT-V373 has great sound. I would recommend this system.

This replaced an LG HTS with a built-in Blu-ray player. That player, after just 3 years, was having trouble coping with the anti-piracy coding on newer Blu-ray discs, and LG stopped providing new firmware updates. Glad to have this new Yamaha HTS to which we can connect an inexpensive Blu-ray player and replace it whenever necessary.
Odd that the receiver came out of the box set for 8-ohm speakers, given that the system has 6-ohm speakers. I would have thought Yamaha would adjust that setting at the factory.

Very good system for someone not looking to spend a fortune. Great sound quality and better for a smaller room or smaller finished basement. Can get loud if need be and sounds great with sports, movies and TV shows. I really like it because it enhances my PS3 sound. Really brings a new level of gaming with the surround sound.
