The Yamaha YHT-497 5.1 Channel Home Theater in a Box System features 5.1 channel surround sound audio with powerful speakers. The system features a full range of connectivity options for a convenient central command station for all your home theater devices. Included are four HDMI input ports, two component video input connections, AM / FM antenna connections, and coaxial ports.
Additionally, a front panel mini jack provides an easy way to input music from a portable player while the front-panel USB port can be used to connect an iPod or iPhone.

Audio Features
5-channel powerful surround sound (100W per channel)
HD audio format decoding: Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio; Dolby Digital Plus and DTS-HD high resolution audio
192kHz / 24-bit Burr Brown DACs for all channels
High dynamic power, low-impedance drive capability
Full-range piano-black speaker system
6.5" (16.5 cm) 100W active subwoofer
4K Pass-Through for Next Generation Super High Resolution Images
This AV receiver provides advanced HDMI features including 4K pass-through. 4K refers to four times the resolution of a 1080p display. While not yet available, 4K displays and sources are sure to become popular in the future. This receiver is capable of passing the 4K data from the source to the display, for image clarity far beyond present standards
HDMI with 3D and Audio Return Channel (ARC)
3D means the receiver can handle 3D signal data. The Audio Return Channel (ARC) function enables data to be sent and received via the same HDMI cable, so you can hear the sound from the TV via a single HDMI cable, with no need for an extra optical cable
YPAO Sound Optimization for Automatic Speaker Setup
YPAO analyzes the room acoustics and adjusts various audio parameters for optimum sound in just a few minutes. It's like having a professional installer calibrate your system
USB Digital Connection for iPod and iPhone
A USB port on the front panel allows convenient connection of an iPod / iPhone, which also charges when connected. Because the digital signal from the iPod / iPhone is transmitted directly to the AV receiver, there is no signal loss or interference, so you enjoy the best possible sound quality. In addition, you can use the receiver's remote control unit to operate the iPod / iPhone music playback functions
SCENE for One-Touch Start
Pressing a SCENE button powers on the AV receiver and selects the input source and DSP mode. You can re-set the buttons for different sources by selecting a source and DSP mode, then pressing a SCENE button for more than three seconds
HD Audio with Cinema DSP
Yamaha's exclusive Cinema DSP technology supports playback of HD audio (Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD Master Audio, etc.), providing natural and expansive sound imaging
HDMI CEC for Easy Operation
Another benefit of HDMI is the availability of CEC functionality. When the unit is connected to a CEC compatible TV, it will turn on and off together with the TV, and you can use the TV remote to control the volume. CEC also provides advanced functionality with other components. For example, you can use the receiver's remote unit to control player functions like skip and stop. All connected devices must be HDMI CEC compatible. Some CEC compatible TVs/players may not work
Subwoofer Trim for Improved Sound Imaging
The subwoofer trim control enhances the low frequencies by avoiding overlap with the front speaker output. This will result in a cleaner, more focused sound stage while providing a seamless frequency response. When subwoofer frequency overlap occurs in conventional systems, the overall sound is pushed toward the subwoofer. Subwoofer trim takes care of this by separating the low subwoofer frequencies cleanly, thus stabilizing the front stage while providing a well-balanced enhanced bass sound
Compressed Music Enhancer
When music is encoded into a digitally compressed format like MP3, the frequency response suffers. Yamaha's Compressed Music Enhancer employs sophisticated digital signal processing using exclusive algorithms to restore what was lost, so the music always sounds the way it should
Adaptive DRC (Dynamic Range Control)
Adaptive DRC automatically adjusts the dynamic range of the sound according to the volume level. This ensures that you hear clear dialogue and vocals, and all sound effects at comfortable levels. There is no need to adjust the volume level as you listen; everything from whispers to big explosions will be heard clearly and comfortably at the same volume setting. It also tones down loud TV commercials, and is ideal for low-volume, late-night listening, when you do not want to disturb others
ECO Mode Lowers Power Consumption by 20%
Yamaha's new eco mode reduces power consumption by about 20%. It can be set from the top of the GUI menu. Compared to power consumption when eco mode is off (Yamaha measurement)
Selectable Auto Power Down
Auto power down lets you save energy by selecting to turn off the power after 2, 4, 8 or 12 hours
Low Standby Power Consumption
Yamaha makes its receivers eco-friendly with a low standby power consumption of 0.3W

Pros:The speaker connections are not proprietary so you can use any type/brand of speakers you'd like.Great sound for the price.Way more connection options than other receivers - 4 HDMI inputs.Con:It can only pass video signal out to the tv though hdmi if the input comes through hdmi. In other words, it couldn't send video to my tv from my wii because my wii was connected to the receiver through composite. So in order to get the video from me wii to the tv, I have to either connect a component video cable from the receiver to my tv or send the wii video component cable straight to my tv or use a wii to hdmi dongle and then connect the wii to the receiver via hdmi. I currently have a component video cable running from the receiver to the wii but the picture doesn't look as good. Final thought: I still really like the product and would buy it again if given the choice.

I bought this system from B&H to better enjoy watching movies, based on positive user reviews and recommendation in Consumer Reports. It definitely fulfilled my hopes in that regard... at first. HOWEVER, during the fifth week of use I finally tried using headphones in the receiver and when I pulled the headphone plug out of the jack I discovered the tip of the plug had come off inside the jack and was stuck inside it - because inserting a headphone plug automatically disengages the speakers, this means that with the plug tip stuck inside the jack I couldn't listen via headphones or speakers at all: the unit was completely unusable/dead to me.There is no way this should happen with a brand-new unit - obviously whatever grips/connects with the phone plug inside the receiver was way too tight and broke the tip off when I pulled out the plug. No, I didn't force it or yank it out or pull it out too hard: I used the same amount of pulling one would normally use.So, despite having had the receiver/system only 5 weeks, my receiver is now in the local "Yamaha-authorized" repair shop waiting for a part - and I don't even know if this is going to be covered under the manufacturers warranty: it sure as "heck" ought to be!!This is ridiculous & complete nonsense!!A real shame because I was really enjoying my new home theater system... until I tried the flippin' headphone jack. So, caveat emptor: let the buyer beware. :(

Comments about Yamaha YHT-497 5.1 Channel Home Theater in a Box System:

All speakers are nicely designed, loud and clear in my mid-sized living room. I must confess I was slightly concerned with the subwoofer after reading some reviews stating that it just wasn't very powerful and couldn't keep up. I found that the subwoofer has PLENTY of punch, so much so I only have its volume up half way. Also, another great thing about the system is the YPAO sound optimizer. It's VERY simple to use and cut out what could have been a tedious job to do manually! I am very impressed and satisfied with this setup and would recommend it to anyone.

This is my second Yamaha surround sound system - the first lasted 13 years so, not bad! We did have a little trouble setting it up....the rear speakers didn't work at all and trying to connect the sound system with cable TV and a Playstation was challening. A quick call to Yamaha customer service solved the problems and we are rolling with excellent sound!

Comments about Yamaha YHT-497 5.1 Channel Home Theater in a Box System:

I was looking for a nice surround sound system without spending a lot of money. The Yamaha YHT-497 Home Theater System is a great system for the price. It's loud enough and set up was super easy. I hooked my projector and blu ray, as well as my IPad to it very easily. I recommened this for those that aren't wanting to pay a whole lot of money but want a nice system.

Comments about Yamaha YHT-497 5.1 Channel Home Theater in a Box System:

I researched home theatre in a box systems for a while before deciding on this one. The system is well designed and attractive. It was very easy to set up and has good clear sound, making my old system seem shamefully inadequate now. I use it mostly for listening to music and radio, though I use it for movies as well. I would have liked to see a more robust remote that could be better used for other theatre system components as well. The stock speaker wire seems thin and flimsy but seems to deliver comparable sound to the better stuff I already had. Overall I am pleased with the product and would recommend it to others.

The product shipped across the entire country and arived on time and in tact via UPS. Highlighted in Cusumers Reports the YHT-497 performed even better than expected. It replaced my 10 year old Sony home theater. With the old Sony speakers still mouinted in place simply adding the model RX 373 receiver in place of the old unit was an ear-opener! What a difference! If you are looking for a superior sound and a full range of features at a great price this one's for you! Vegas Rick

I really liked the YPAO automatic speaker set-up. It really made a difference to the overall sound the system produced. Sounds great with Video games or movies, my kid was playing Madden football and he said "It sounds like you are at the game".

It also cuts down on the amount of cables running to the TV. I have the Xbox, DirectTV, BluRay and PS3 plugged into the reciever and then there is only one HDMI cable running from the receiver to the TV.
