The Pentax smc DA 645 25mm f/4 AL (IF) SDM AW Lens is a wide angle lens for use with the Pentax 645D digital camera. Its 25mm focal length is equivalent to 19.5mm in 35mm format and provides you with an angle of view of 95°. The combination of such a wide angle focal length and a minimum focus distance of 1.31' / 0.4m gives this lens a tremendous hyperfocal distance, ideal for landscape photography and other broad scenes.

The lens features Pentax' SDM autofocus system for quick and quiet performance. It is also coupled with the Quick Shift focus system for disengaging the AF motor, allowing instant switching between auto and manual focus modes.

The lens elements also features an Aero Bright coating for reducing aberrations inherent to the wide angle design as well as providing greater light transmission to the camera's sensor. The SP coating on the front element helps to prevent dust and oils from obscuring the image and makes it easier to clean the surface. The entire lens construction is weather and dust sealed for reliable operation in harsh conditions.

25mm wide angle lens is compatible with Pentax 645D and provides a 95° angle of view.
SDM autofocus system provides highly accurate, fast, and quiet performance.
Quick Shift focus system allows you to disengage the AF motor for seamless, instant transitioning between auto and manual focus modes.
Aero Bright lens coating helps to reduce aberrations and promotes greater light transmission.
Inline filter design permits the use of 40.5mm drop-in filters for use within the lens body; screw-in type filters are not compatible due to the convex lens design.
9 rounded blade diaphragm design provides an aesthetic out of focus quality that is especially noticeable when photographing with wider apertures.
SP coating protects lens elements from dust and oils and makes it easier to clean.
Weather and dust sealed construction gives reliable performance when working under less-than-ideal conditions.

Comments about Pentax smc DA 645 25mm f/4 AL (IF) SDM AW Lens:

I am very pleased with this lens. Corner to corner very sharp with little to almost no vignetting. The area of coverage is very impressive. Extreme quality build, quick to focus, and the inclusion of a UV and polarizer filters are nice touches. The front metal petal can't use Lee filters, but Pentax's own filter additions are a welcome inclusion. Some complain about the weight of the lens, I personally find it to balance very well with the Pentax 645 digital cameras. I primarily use it for landscape photography and have been very pleased with the output this lens delivers. Highly recommended.

        Good. But not great

Comments about Pentax smc DA 645 25mm f/4 AL (IF) SDM AW Lens:

It is a good lens, is you truly need the FL and can't live with 28mm. If you can live with 28mm the 28-45 zoom is much better and you get more for the money. Also you can use regular filters on the 28-45 which you can't on this one because the lens hood is not removable. Is is pretty sharp from wide open to fully closed, but the 28-45 is even sharper. I bought both lenses and tested both in the same situation at every aperture and the zoom was always sharper specially on the corners.

Comments about Pentax smc DA 645 25mm f/4 AL (IF) SDM AW Lens:

Primarily a landscape photographer I am constantly trying to find new compositions, angles, and scenarios that will make my scenes more dramatic. A tough nut to crack for me was having my widest 645 lens be the 55mm kit lens that came with the 645D and a 120mm f/4 Macro. When I sold the 645D and some dSLR equipment to cover buying a 645Z system, I went the extra mile to get the 25mm AW lens. From the first moment of shooting on, I knew this was going to be my go-to landscape lens. Right off the bat you are amazed at how little distortion there is...and this is a hair narrower than 19mm in 35mm format!!! I remember shooting with a Sigma EX 20mm on my 20d...it almost had a tiny planet effect. With the 25mm I am shooting scenes that require so little work in the post production workflow in terms of distortion and/or horizon straightening. Couple that with the fact that you're shooting on a 51MP sensor and there's just so much information to play with, and it is TACK SHARP. This is certainly no cheap purchase, but if you are a landscape photographer, I cannot see a world for you without it. If I had to take just one lens, it would be this one. Oh, did I mention I have shot with it in torrential downpour only to keep on shooting for over an hour?!? I do wish Pentax made the AW feature more widespread along their 645 lineup-for classic and modern lens alike. Overall, I would give this lens 6 stars out of five, but that's not possible, and even if it was, well, the cost....ohhh the cost.

Comments about Pentax smc DA 645 25mm f/4 AL (IF) SDM AW Lens:

This lens is one of the best wide angle lenses out there for medium format cameras. It ideally expands the Pentax line-up into the far wide range.

One must consider that such extreme lenses are difficult to manufacture for medium format. Having said this, the 25mm equals or surpasses the best 35mm options and most medium format competitors.

What I like about the lens is its sharpness and the almost complete lack of distortion. Some complain about color fringing but I have not found that to be an issue.

Some complain about the price, but it is actually reasonable compared to similar offerings from competitors (Leica, Mamiya/Phase, Hasselblad).

The only concern is the somewhat sluggish manual focusing ring. Autofocus is just fine.

25mm is a great medium format wide angle focal length and this lens has become one of my favorites.

Comments about Pentax smc DA 645 25mm f/4 AL (IF) SDM AW Lens:

This is the sharpest wide angle lens I have ever used, and I have tested every lens out there from zeiss to leica , fuji, hasselblad etc... And this lens is my favorite. From the edge to edge sharpness, the contrast, the color, and the lens has the drop in rear filter system , which is optically genius... I shoot landscape with it mainly, along with the Pentax 645d & the new 645z body, and print 40x60 inch fuji flex prints that are tack sharp. If you are thinking of shooting wide , it doesn't get any better. Thanks BH for having in stock just in time for my Iceland trip. You guys rock! Thanks Pentax for making an amazing medium format digital system . #F64_JoeySkibel

They say that "you get what you pay for", and with this lens, you get a lot! The drop-in filter is a great solution to the otherwise protruding front element, and works well with polarizers. This lens is sharp! It resolves amazing detail and focuses quickly. It is a beast of a lens, no doubt. I can see how landscape photographers love this lens, but architectural photographers should appreciate it too. This, and the 90mm are simply the best 645 system lenses available from Pentax today in my opinion.

This is a fantantic super wide angle medium format digital lens for Pentax. Images are sharp. The focus is fast. Lens is weather sealed. I really like the small (40.5mm) drop in filter which can be rotated if needed when using a polarizer. As far as I know, this is the widest angle medum format digital lens available for any system. I use it for landscapes for David Muench type "near far" images.
