The TiVo box and the TiVo service are great, but the cable company they are wedded to limits both. For example, Brighthouse and Charter require connecting a cable card and a tuning adapter (they provide these for a small monthly fee) to the TiVo so that it can receive cable channels. Intermittently these two items will malfunction causing channels to "drop out" without warning. If you are watching a program--or worse, recording one--you lose picture and sound. You then have to go through several steps to reset the tuning adapter and hope that the channels reappear. The tuning adapter and cable card also limit which channels you can view. Again, with Brighthouse and Charter you cannot access OnDemand content. Some other services, like the NHL CenterICE hockey package, cannot be viewed on the TiVo. If you are willing to pay for a DVR from your cable provider to use as a backup you can mitigate these problems, but not entirely resolve them. Regarding set up, the TiVo printed "start here" guide and the on-screen process are very clear and extremely easy to follow. The difficulty I noted in the "Cons" section of this review is due entirely to the time involved. It can take hours (literally) to complete the whole process. If any problems do arise however, TiVo tech support is far and away the BEST I have ever dealt with. In sum, any problems with the TiVo DVR and the TiVo service usually turn out to be problems with the cable company, not with TiVo.

I bought this unit to replace rental unit from Entouch. I had 2 tuner, 17hr (125GB?) unit. Good things about Premiere XL4: 4 tuners, plenty of space (300hrs) and ability to control/program via mobile devices. Down side: TiVO service fee and interface. $16/mo for I don't know for what, not easy to program repeating shows - "season pass" programs for 1 season only. I find user interface too cluttered. I would not have bought it if I knew $25/mo rental from Entouch included TiVO fee (even though I could only get 500GB unit from them.

Great product overall. Because you are having to deal with the cable company setup AND Tivo, I'm hesitant to say that the setup is easy. I kind of felt like a chicken/egg dilemma when trying to figure out who to speak with first. I had a little bit of difficulty getting a picture but wasn't sure who to call. Took about an hour to get things setup and squared away. Definitely read the manual to get the most out of this device. Recording 4 shows at once has changed my world.

            Comments about TiVo Premiere XL4:

Been very pleased with the XL4 to this point. It's done everything I've needed it to do and then some. I was skeptical at first about it's ability to manage four concurrent recordings, but it seems to do so with ease.

I'm still not really sure how it does it, but it can decode and record four separate feeds at the same time using just one Multi-Stream Cable Card.

Also the multi-room playback has been a nice feature. Recently moved the old TiVo to an upstairs bedroom. Didn't have to worry about the cable hookup, can watch in the bedroom anything that's recorded or recording to the TiVo downstairs via Ethernet.

I would recommend this to anybody looking to upgrade a DVR. TiVo in general has some quirks, but I've loved this device.

I use all 4 tuners and will really appreciate the 2 TB. I load videos from my Mac, I have 40 season passes that transferred seamlessly from my old Tivo as did 200 gb of shows. I will not miss the buggy awful Verizon DVR. Channel changing can be slow, some of the remote features are odd. Tivo website pretty bad, but iPhone app is very good.

                Comments about TiVo Premiere XL4:

This is our third Tivo and have loved them all. The XL4 is easy to self set-up despite what a service provider (Comcast in this case) might tell you. However, there are two minor, but annoying issues I have. First, the number of clicks to get to some screens (or action buttons) has been increased due to the growth of some menus. Second, there are annoying delays after clicking to get to a screen or have some action take place. Others have complained about this and I agree. Tivo in reply to my inquiry about a future software fix for this stated they're not aware of the problem. The respondent must not own one or have read any comments on the XL4. Still, these are minor compared with all it can do. With the clipping of so many shows these days having 4 tuners should enable always seeing "who dun it".

                  Comments about TiVo Premiere XL4:

I've owned several Tivo's since the 1990's. This one really got my attention with addition of the 4 tuners and the large amount of HD recording capacity. Set up with the multi-stream cable card went flawlessly. I've had the unit in use for a month now, and I am impressed with many of the new features that Tivo has incorporated. The HD recording capacity and the ability to record three shows while watching live TV on the remaining tuner is a huge plus for me. Playback of HD recordings is crystal clear. Initially, I had to get used to the changes in the navigation screens, but that is becoming second nature as I get more experience with some of the new interfaces. My most notable negative issue is the often slow response when navigating through some of the menu screens. There has also been several instances of "pixelation" during playback on a small percentage of my recordings. I am not sure if this is a Tivo issue, or an issue with the cable signal. Overall, I am satisfied with the performance of this unit, and I would not hesitate to recommend it.

Love Tivo. This is the perfect addition to our cable system. The cable HD box only provided 25 hours of HD recording and 2 channel recording. This unit records up to 300 HD hours on a 2TB drive. Also, the Tivo interface is so much cleaner than the cable company.

                    Comments about TiVo Premiere XL4:

Bought this unit for my parents. Upgraded them from a Series2 (Dual Tuner) to this. Works out great, since they never upgraded to the HD/Premier series and they have HD Cable channels which the other unit cannot really record (in HD) and the way it (Series2) had to record from the HD Tuner, it (Series2) flagged all recording as "Do Not Copy" so no sharing between their other TiVo (an even older Series2). Also freed up a HD Tuner for another TV. Unfortunately (but knowingly) you can't share HD recordings to Series2 TiVos, only other "Premier" units. On the bright side, this came labeled as "Premiere XL4", which is the exact same thing as Premiere Elite, just the updated naming scheme.
