Innovative and portable, the cutting-edge Sony HXR-NX30 Palm Size NXCAM HD Camcorder with Projector is a handheld, excellently built HD camcorder that's capable of capturing AVCHD video in Full HD 1080p at 60 fps, as well as high-quality digital still images. It's equipped with 96GB of internal flash memory, an LED video light and NightShot capabilities. It also supports all AVCHD recording formats at 28 Mbps.

The true innovation behind Sony's HXR-NX30 is its 1/2.88 ExmorR image sensor and ultra-wide angle Carl Zeiss 10x optical zoom lens. The lens is mounted within a gyroscope, which affords unbelievable image stabilization. Sony's calls their innovative technology Balanced Optical SteadyShot with Active Mode. In fact, you can choose to shoot in fixed mode, without stabilization, or you can easily switch on the SteadyShot whenever needed. This feature is great for walking and shooting or for journalists who may need to hold the camera steady, high-above their head while demanding the truth in front of city hall.

Other highlights include an onboard level control section with several professional audio controls for tweaking your sound levels just right. The camera also affords dual XLR inputs with phantom power and a stereo shotgun mic (included). If that's not enough, the camera's integrated projector, which is built right into the back of the LCD display, definitely puts this model over the top. Plus, with the ability to project up to a 100" diagonal image on any flat, near-white surface, the projector really opens up the possibilities of how you can use your HD camcorder. If you're also looking to output your video source to an HDTV, the camera's integrated HDMI port affords another convenient way to share your home movies with friends and family.

Ultra Wide-Angle 26 mm Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T Lens
The HXR-NX30 comes with a 26 mm Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T lens that suppresses unwanted reflections to assure faithful color reproduction. It also provides high contrast and high image quality with exceptional resolution from 26 mm wide angle to 260 mm telephoto (35mm equivalent). Thanks to the 6-blade iris diaphragm, you can enjoy an exceptionally realistic expression of natural light 1
1/2.88" ExmorR CMOS Image Sensor
Even when shooting dark scenes, the back-illuminated Exmor R CMOS sensor provides high sensitivity and low noise that are hard to believe from such a compact unit. What is more, using a 1/2.88" type sensor with an aspect ratio of 16:9 is ideal for wide-angle shooting. This lets you record images with even higher definition
Balanced Optical SteadyShot Image Stabilization System
The innovative Balanced Optical SteadyShot image stabilization system eliminates the influence of vibrations from the body by enclosing the entire optical block, from the lens to the image sensor, in a "floating" space. Combined with electronic image stabilization that compensates for rotation around the optical axis, this new system provides powerful image stabilization even when shooting whilst zooming, which was previously difficult to achieve. You can record stable images with minimal blur, every time. To optimize the effect of Balanced Optical SteadyShot, the HXR-NX30 features a FIXED SHOT mode. Press a button and this expands the movable range of the optical block to keep you locked on your subject. This is particularly convenient when you want to maintain the same shooting angle for an extended period
Full HD Video Capture & Still Image Recording
The HXR-NX30 allows you to shoot at 60 fps progressive (1080/60p) with 1920 x 1080 Full HD resolution. Using a 30p timeline setting with AVCHD 2.0 compatible NLE software enables conversion to smooth slow-motion images up to 2x slower. You can also select 1080/60i/30p and 1280 x 720/60p. Simultaneous recording of still images while shooting video is another feature of the HXR-NX30. It is possible to shoot high quality images with a resolution as high as 24.1MP
Embedded Flash Memory & Memory Stick PRO Duo / SD Multi Card Slot
The built-in 96GB embedded Flash memory can record and store up to 30 hours of high definition video footage in HD LP mode with Dolby Digital audio mode. And there is an amulet-card slot that lets you record video images on Memory Stick PRO Duo and SD cards, giving you a range of options in your choice of recording media. You can also use these readily available cards to copy data from the internal memory
XLR Audio Inputs & ECM-XM1 Shotgun Microphone Records Linear PCM Audio
Two balanced XLR audio inputs are built-in with phantom power and attenuation options that professional users require for clean sound quality. Default audio settings for XLR recording are highlighted in green for easy reference in the field in order to reduce operator error under difficult lighting conditions. The ECM-XM1 shotgun microphone mounted on top of the ergonomic handle provides audio recording performance similar to larger shoulder-mounted ENG style cameras. The HXR-NX30 is able to record high-quality 48 kHz/16-bit Linear PCM audio as well
Timecode / User bit Recording & HDMI Embedded Timecode Output
The HXR-NX30 features the important professional camcorder functions of timecode and user bit settings. Like other NXCAM camcorders, the HXR-NX30 allows timecode to be centrally reset using an infrared remote control for easy synchronization of video from multiple cameras. Using NLE software, live footage shot with multiple NXCAM camcorders can be efficiently edited with timecode sync. Timecodes and user bits can also be output through an HDMI jack 2
Built-In Light Offers Auxiliary Light Source for Video or Flash for Still Image Capture
You can use this built-in light as a flash when shooting still images or as an auxiliary light source when recording video. Using the NightShot mode is particularly effective when recording in low-light conditions and allows you to capture otherwise impossible shots
Built-In Projector to View Footage
A built-in projector can project images up to 100" diagonal (when projecting 16.4' from a screen) or 40" (when projecting 6.6' from a screen). Large-screen projection of images enables all the staff involved to check the rushes at the end of the shoot and it reduces the need for an external display

    - Note: I bought this to serve as a camcorder. The photo features are a nice bonus, but not important to me, so I did not review that feature set.I was looking for a camcorder with the best optical stabilization first and foremost, that also had pro-level features such as an XLR audio block, time code, but was also small and lightweight enough for backpack travel. After searching high and low for the better part of half a year (Since October 2013), I kept coming to the NX30u. Quite simply, it had all these features at an attractive price point. I realize that there are other offerings from Canon/Panasonic/JVC that have these features as well for around $[$]or less too, HOWEVER, what really sold me was the Balanced Optical SteadyShot by Sony. After seeing the demos online, and finally trying it in person, WOW, it is quite simply the best hands down. It isn't hype at all, it works as advertised. At full 10x zoom, high magnification macro shots, holding really stabled locked off shots is easy hand-held. And this becomes pretty much perfect with any type of rig which is how I use it. It is effortless to also get handheld shots equivalent to pan, tilts, and slides that would normally require a tripod, jib, or slider. This stabilization system is phenomenal, and makes the NX30u hands down a winner in this respect by itself.Fortunately there is more to love:- The build quality is impressively robust, better than I was expecting. High-quality plastics with nice textures encompass the shell. - The XLR audio block with top handle feels solid with my guess a magnesium build. The manual dial up front is easy to access and very effective. The audio controls are easy to get at and protected by a clear plastic door, yet you can adjust the levels via finger under the door if needed. The supplied microphone is very good, more than adequate to get you started. And at the top is an additional cold-shoe mount for other accessories like a light or wireless mic receiver. Bonus points for the built-in cable management to pinch the mic cords for cleaner routing.- The camera is highly menu-driven (unfortunately), but the use of on-screen assignable quick buttons helps get to desirable functions quick. - Battery life is impressive for the included NP-FV70, which gets you around 3.5hrs or record time. And the internal 96GB capacity is more than enough for 7+hrs of 1080p footage at the highest bitrate. - What is a nice and genius touch is the built-in USB cable that tucks into the hand strap. It sounds insignificant, but it's a small detail that will prevent you from ever being unable to transfer footage out of it if you forget a USB cable.- The projector as others have mentioned is highly useful. It;'s icing on the cake to this impressive camcorder.- face tracking is wonderful. It's much more valuable than i originally thought. The camera can adjust focus much faster than i can, along side exposure which leads me to:- The auto modes are impressive. Coming from a HDSLR, I am used to doing everything manual. But in dynamic run and gun situations, the NX30 handles this intelligently and much faster than i can. It does so in a fashion that seems human. Well done Sony for auto features that really work.- low light performance is respectable. I had no high-hopes in this regard, but was pleasantly surprised at how good the images looked.- I realize the PJ790 is essentially the same camcorder as this, without the XLR block basically, but that XLR block is pretty awesome. I think that is worth the additional cost for the NX30u because it also is a top-handle. You can add this stuff to the PJ790 via various 3rd-party products and a rig with a top-handle, but now you are looking at possibly more money than the NX30u, and a more ungainly package than if you just bought the NX30u. I am assuming you are looking at the NX30u because these professional features are important to you. Which if that is the case, keep in mind that:- The NX30u has built-in timecode, whereas the PJ790 does not. Some notable things I did NOT like about it:- The camera does NOT allow simultaneous manual control of Focus/Iris/Shutter Speed/WB/Gain "technically". Setting one of these parameters defaults all ithers to Auto mode. Frustating, however I say "technically" because I later found a way to emulate this somewhat. WHat you need to do:Set the three onscreen control buttons to 1) shutter speed 2) AGC 3) WB, and set the Manual dial (on front of camera) to AE Shift. By doing this, you can then control all three of these independently and simultaneously without the camera reverting to auto. AGC allows for limits for 0,3,6,9,12,15,18,21,24db, pretty much manual exposure. With this combination you get to control of Shutter speed, White Balance, Gain, and exposure of +/- 2.0 EV via the front dial. This method also lets you fix a shutter speed of 1/48th all the time for a filmic look.Unfortunately I haven't found a way to "trick" the camera to also let you use the manual dial for focus while keeping the other modes in manual. SUCKS! I have emailed Sony pleading to revise the FW to allow proper full manual control of the NX30u.- A nitpick: the tripod screw is NOT inline with the lens. Not a huge deal unless you wish to attach 15mm rod accessories. Why is this important? Because:- The camera does NOT have built in ND filters. And the supplied lens hood does not allow the simultaneous use of threaded filters either. What the heck Sony. So if you like shooting at 1/48th for a more filmic look, you'l need to sacrifice the hood to use a variable 52mm ND filter. I hate not using at shade/mattebox outdoors. So what if you could add a 3x3 mattebox with 15mm rods? Perfect! But the rods don't line up because the tripod screw is off-center. I don't feel like buying a specialized 15mm railblock that allows lateral adjustment that would cost 1/5 the price of the camera. A disappointment.- I wish the XLR audio block had a better shock-mount for the shotgun mic. You can easily hear low rumble if handling the camera. This can be mitigated via the low-pass filter applied to the channel, but it would be nice not to have to sacrifice frequency response because of this. With all this said, Would I recommend the NX30u? If it suits your needs NOW the same way as it did mine, I would say YES, because there still isn't anything else that comes close to what it can do for the size and price. BUT, it's been out since 2012...that is an eternity for camcorders. I can only speculate a new revision will be released soon, although I could not find any evidence online to suggest anything yet. With NAB2014 around the corner, it's a gamble. But like I said, if you need something like this now, it's still the king when it comes to optical stabilization for this price category. I think the stabilization feature really sets this apart from all comparable brands, and the extra differences I outlined above make this a better buy than the consumer versions if you need the pro audio and editing features.

The image quality is very good, the size is nice and compact, I like the stabilization. My biggest complaint is that you cannot adjust the shutter speed and Iris at the same time! This really bummed me out when I could not keep a consistent shutter speed to match other footage I shot at 24p @ 48th sec shutter. Because there is no ND filter the camera compensates exposure by ramping up the shutter speed to create the jittery high speed shutter look. If it were not for this, I would buy one in a heart beat. I am glad I got to use one extensively on loan though. To combat the "Saving Private Ryan" look, I bought an ND fader for the front of the camera to help with bright shooting. It is an otherwise awesome camera for someone who just points and shoots.

    Extremely stable piece of gear

Comments about Sony 96GB HXR-NX30 Palm Size NXCAM HD Camcorder with Projector:

I am extremely satisfied with the NX30u. It works great in a low light situation. Carl Zeiss' lense adds extreme quality to the footage shot with this camera. At first, I thought the projector was a sales gimmick. The project is high quality and pretty powerful, I was impressed. I would reccommend this piece to everyone.

Comments about Sony 96GB HXR-NX30 Palm Size NXCAM HD Camcorder with Projector:

I've always was against Sony because of it's dedicated memory card. I looked this up, and was also worried about the quality of the projector. I needed a camera to document my newborn son's christening and didnt know what to do. I had my wife pick between a Panasonic and this one, and she made the best choice. The price is great. The mic inputs, along with the mic is great. The projector is great as well. I used this more as a hobby, but it seems like I will push myself to semi-pro because of this. All manual functions make you shoot anywhere!!

        Front heavy, bad ergonomics

        By Dale C.

        from Austin, TX

Comments about Sony 96GB HXR-NX30 Palm Size NXCAM HD Camcorder with Projector:

The camera is front heavy to begin with, and putting the XLR handle and mic on makes it really awkward. And the placement of the headphone jack behind the hand strap is ridiculous. Those bad design features, plus the lack of full manual exposure control, made me return the unit. The image stabilization is cool but doesn't outweigh those flaws for me. If you didn't handhold it, or always used a Glidecam, it might make sense, but that kind of defeats the point.

Comments about Sony 96GB HXR-NX30 Palm Size NXCAM HD Camcorder with Projector:

I'm a filmmaker who usually shoots movies with my trusty Canon 5D. However, sometimes I just need the convenience and simplicity this camcorder offers. If I need a shot that requires more stability, a smaller and much more low profile set up, or a slow motion shot at 1080p (my Canon 5D only shoots 60fps at 720p), then this is the camera I will use. I would give it a five star rating were it not for a few things. All of the usual good thins are here. Image quality, sound, stabilization and so on. I just have to dock it down one for it's lack of total control. I am not as able to fully control the settings on the camera as I would like to be. However, the good news is that this camera is surprisingly smart in it's automated features. I can manually control the shutter speed and let the exposure do it's thing and be confident in the shot I get. The same can be said about manually controlling the exposure and letting the shutter speed do its thing. Also, given the size of the camera, a lot of the control features are done through the menu screen. Which isn't my first choice but is not a problem. Given the capabilities of this camera, it's worth learning the menu system. I mostly work in low light situations. While this cameras low light footage is not noise free by any means, I would still defiantly use it. Noise does not bother me too much provided it's at the very least manageable and not incredibly noticeable. Which, in this cameras case, fits the bill very well. I was also very surprised and impressed at how well the footage can work with various color LUTs. I loaded some test footage in various situations and applied Vision Color's M31 LUT and it came out stunningly beautiful. It practically matches my Canon 5D footage in terms of color and tone. I highly recommend this camera to both hobbyists and professionals. This camera will make a great companion to your DSLR and will make a better choice for some video and film projects.

Comments about Sony 96GB HXR-NX30 Palm Size NXCAM HD Camcorder with Projector:

I was impressed by ease of use and intuitive ergonomics. Both Image stabilization and autofocus are amazing, Stills are quite good as well (I usually play with DSLR's). I give 5 stars, assuming that the supplied software is not useful.(I will never have a chance to use it, since it refuses to install after not recognizing the camera).

The quality and the sound of the pictures or movies where awesome.

The product was also delivered to us on time and no change in our plan.

I use this camera in the studio and in the field. The size of the camera is perfect for my hands. the one down side is the input for the headphones, its on the right side and gets in the way of your hand if your hand is big. Sony should rethink the location.

I bought 2 of them originally after I did some research on line about them. Got them home and fell in love with them right away. The projector was a added bonus but the light weight and stabilizer and ability to adjust in different lighting has been a blessing. I immediately bought a 3rd one used and having the 3rd has helped so much. I bought mine used and they have been great.

Comments about Sony 96GB HXR-NX30 Palm Size NXCAM HD Camcorder with Projector:

I have recorded grandchildren moments, and look forward to Europe trip in 10 days. The projector feature is very cool and will be nice to have on the trip to share the day's video with the group. One correction to an earlier reviewer's comment on the camera requiring use of a data card: it is NOT required. Simply go to Setup on the LCD screen, and select Internal memory for recording rather than the default Of the Data Card. Records fine with no data card installed! Next purchase will be a portable TB hard drive to offload video while traveling. 4 stars (not 5) is due to size so small even my relatively small hands have had trouble finding a comfortable grip without frequent adjustment. Other than that, ease of use is excellent. I bought this model for the option of XLR mic input and manual sound level without requiring carrying that capability around all the time. (I use to do wedding videos.)

I used this camcorder for the first time last weekend in the Louisiana swamp and it was very easy to handle in those rugged conditions. I have not had a chance to download the video to the computer for editing yet, but if it looks as good on the bigger screen as it does on this camera playback, I will be very happy. So far so good.

I use this camcorder to create films for my film class. The features are sooo nice, I particularly like the "image stabilization" feature. Makes such a difference. The only feature I have trouble with is the switch between auto and manual modes, it kind of lags and doesn't enact as quick as I need it o.

I researched high and low before settling on this camera. The review that was the absolute best was by Video Whisperer (http://thevideowhisperer.wordpress.com/2013/04/24/pure-frickin-magic-sony-hxr-nx30-review/).

This camera is everything it claims to be! It is SO easy to use, with amazing quality. The only thing I don't like so far is that it is difficult to remove the XLR mic cables.

I had read some older reviews on Amazon that said it wasn't compatible with a Mac, in particular with iMovie. Happy to say that it is completely compatible with both. (Note: I have the newsiest Macbook/iMovie to date so not sure about older versions). It was as easy as point/shot/plug in with attached USB cord and import to iMovie. Seamless. I cannot wait to discover everything about this camera and will be using it on a 3 week trip to Ireland next week so am sure to get some great footage! Cannot recommend it more highly!

As a novice videographer, I will be using my new SONY NXR_NX30 HD camcorder for two projects: a dance video and an oral history project in my community.
It is intuitive to use and the automatic features create a quality image in a variety of lighting environments.
I am disappointed with the view finder: too short and too small.
The audio is not strong but is adequate. I will likely buy a Rodemic for the interview videos.
I think I will outgrow this camcorder in a couple of years but it is perfect for me now.

I needed a new small but powerful addition to my camera gear. This thing is incredible! It has much better stabilization than cameras costing many times more.Alright, so you can't change lenses. But the built-in Carl Ziess lens is pretty good, and the aperture settings allow you to get those depth-of-field shots; though not as quick and easy as using a good lens with a low F-Stop.As far as lenses go, Sony has a tele and wide converter, that's about it. With the addition of these two converters, for 90% of what I do, this is now the tool of choice. The only negative comment I have is that it didn't come with a wall-charger. The included charger makes you charge the battery while it is mounted on the camera. For $[$]that's easy to fix.Low Light - The camera's 1/2 sensor is about twice as good in low-light as the previous 1/3 Sony sensors. Overall it's not bad. If you want something better, you will have to go with a full size sensor.Sound - Sony adds some improvements to their camera-top two-channel XLR mixer. You can now turn off AGC and control the volume right there with dials on the mixer. This is handy when you're getting a bad feed; you don't have to fidget around in the on-screen menu to adjust your sound.Manual Control - There's no comparing this camera to up-scale models that give you more manual control. Having said that, Sony has added a manual F-Stop, which is an improvement over the HVR series cameras. This control can be configured as EITHER focus or F-Stop control.Media - Love the ability to record AVCHD on SDHD cards. For shots longer than 20 minutes, you will need Sony's File Management Utility (included) to transfer the file to your computer. Failure to use this utility will result in a dropped frame every 20 minutes. You can drag and drop your files directly into Premiere without using Sony's utility. This works well, but if you do a lot of shooting, you will end up with many clips named the same.Applications - Best suited for Run and Gun filming, or whenever you don't have the time for a director to yell "cut," so you can take an hour to set up your larger manual camera. The built-in projector feature is just cool! It's not a high-end home theater projector, but its decent, and it allows you to view and collaborate with your crew or clients immediately without a playback monitor. To Sony - A 4K update for this camera would be VERY nice!Overall this camera is worth the price! B&H also gets five stars for their professional service. Buyer beware, if you find it cheaper, check Sony's Authorized Dealer list first.
