The Manfrotto SYMPLA Clamp-On Remote Control for Canon DSLRs connects to a Canon DSLR by USB and interfaces directly with the camera and lens firmware to control focus operations and the main functions of the camera. The remote can either be clamped onto the SYMPLA spacer that comes with SYMPLA Adjustable Handles, which are part of most SYMPLA rigs, or it can be clamped onto round tubes, pipes, bars, pan bars or anything similar between 12 and 23mm in diameter.

Direct controls include auto focus, start/stop recording, photo shutter release, live view and live view digital zoom. Other than direct controls, the remote features a customizable focus direction and speed limit, focus memory settings, and fixed or variable focus control modes. It also has LED indicators that display its own battery status, the camera's mode -- "Photo" or "Video" -- and whether the camera is "Recording" when in video mode.

The focus operation is totally remote, without any contact with the camera or lens, and is performed by a 3-step, ultra-precise focus speed. Compatible cameras are Canon DSLRs because the remote is geared specifically for Canon DSLR firmware.

The advantages of this remote are few but huge. Follow-focusing is automated. Lenses can easily be swapped. Extending the distance between the remote and the camera is as simple as using a longer USB cable. And very importantly -- you're afforded more self-reliance.

This works great! But the tiny little cable that comes with it is useless for most of our purposes. It's so short and cute and short. I had to create a male to male usb mini using some adapters and it works great on our jib now. So if you're buying this for a jib, just know that you need to by two male mini to standard USB cables and a female adapter to connect the two.

Just got the SYMPLA remote and it does a few things great, but there are a few things you should be aware of. I tested this on my 5D Mark 3 and the 7D. The 5DM3 is not currently supported by Manfrotto, but most things work as expected, except for the 1-button autofocus. Right now I press it and nothing happens. Perhaps a firmware update will fix this. I also noticed some drift in the focus memory once I moved between the same two points more than twice. The SYMPLA remote also doesn't fully replace a manual follow-focus, because the electronic lens control can be rather noisy, depending on the lens. If you're using on-camera sound, you will quickly grow frustrated. But hey, how about the positives? It's a great remote record trigger for a rig and it has a zoom-in button, so you can quickly check your focus and keep your hands off the camera body. This is its best use. You have to be careful how you enter Live View mode with it on a 7D however, as I had trouble to the point where the camera wouldn't shut off or stop recording until I ejected the battery. Of course, that corrupted the movie file too, so you just have to use Manfrotto's defined procedures when pairing it with a 7D. Also, FYI, this unit only has three focus speeds and I found the fastest is rather jerky and steppy. Bottom line, it won't put your follow-focus out of business, but it can make your shoulder rig more effective if you rely on it's strengths.

Comments about Manfrotto Clamp-On Remote Control for Canon DSLRs:

I think this is the best USB focus controller in the market if you are looking for one to use with Canon 5D Mark III. Its design also make it easy to use with the tripod, however it lacks the focus wheel.

Comments about Manfrotto Clamp-On Remote Control for Canon DSLRs:

Purchased it to control my Canon 5d MkIII. Out of the box the auto focus button didn't work properly. After an advised firmware upgrade, now the REC/Shutter button won't toggle between video and photo mode (it worked before the update). The remote seems promising. Focus control is very smoot and precise. Focus memory is a cool feature. Just wish I could get it to work as advertised.

Comments about Manfrotto Clamp-On Remote Control for Canon DSLRs:

I was planning to use this on my 5D mkIII for shoulder mount video run and gun on a zacuto double barrel, and it just flat doesn't work. I called Manfrotto and after two days, their tech support "guy" - it literally goes to the voicemail of one person - explained that a firmware update would make it work.

I had tried it with the 7D and the 5DmkIII and it had only worked once with the 7D and never with the 5D. After the firmware update, it will work for the first two (always two) times it is turned on, and then never again after that until the batteries are removed from the unit AND the camera that the unit is connected to.

As a professional, I can't depend on gear that doesn't work 100% of the time, especially shooting events where you can't stage shots or wait around for your gear to work.

It looks good and sounds good, but it works only some of the time. Unacceptable Manfrotto.

I use this product all the time. It makes recording time on jibs and cranes much easier. I have a seven inch monitor connected to my DSLR, and have my Manfrotto SYMPLA Clamp-On Remote Control connected as well. I no longer have to stop what I am doing to review my recording through the camera. I just get the action in one shoot and right to the computer I go for editing.
