Product Highlights
  • Ideal with iPad with MovieSlate App.

The ikan Tablet Production Slate, a.k.a. the T-Slate, is designed to perfectly integrate with the MovieSlate app. via an iPad, but it can certainly also be used standalone, at the employ of a marker like in the old days. The clapboard is white acrylic with engraved lines and titles, and the clapper is made of durable wood and drops with a loud and crisp clapping sound.

But ideal use would be with an iPad and MovieSlate. MovieSlate's built-in clap detection function can detect T-Slate's clap by measuring a combination of sound and vibration.

Setup requires an iPad case and is simple. Slide the case into a slot and secure it with a waistband. A waistband isn't included but most any kind can be used. And most iPad cases can be used except for magnetic ones such as Apple's Smart Cover.

Comments about ikan Tablet Production Slate:

Well-made and needs an iPad to fully use its design. The clapper is solid with magnets and the bolts used for the hinge can be tightened. Instead of getting upset that the bolts loosen, I'm happy that I can tighten them. Most products don't give you that ability and then you have a floppy slate with no chance of improvement. No one likes a floppy slate. I do wish the Scene block was bigger.

Comments about ikan Tablet Production Slate:

Sure, it may just look like a basic slate with a port hole for an iPad. But,...well okay, it is just that. The iKan is a quality slate made of durable heavy plastic construction, and a tite fit all around, that serves both traditionasl; (grease pensil or erasable marker both work well) and when used with a good iPad case can actually be a little lifesaver!I use it with the Movie Slate app, and find it pretty indespensible on set.Regarding cases, I found that the inCase works best. Not anything to thich or with a magnet (like the Apple case)My only caution is to think about buying some stick-sided velcro, where without some place in a couple strategic locations between the iPad's case and clapper, it tends to flop around like a dead fish. All in all a good investment but I'd like to have seen it closer to like $[*] bucks.

Comments about ikan Tablet Production Slate:

Our productions have used Movieslate by movie-slate.com for quite some time on an original model iPad. No matter how carefully our AC's tapped the clapper sticks, half the time they didn't fire or they swiped instead of tapped... the end result was delay during the roll which made NOBODY happy.

We bought this product and the recommended iPad cover. The slate itself does NOT hold the iPad, but rather allows the front cover of the iPad to slip through a slot just below the clapper sticks. In our case, we ended up taping the case in the back and just living with the fact that the iPad face was unprotected. It sits quite securely in there now.

The slate functions exactly as you'd imagine, offering a clapper with a nice, sharp sound. If your iPad runs out of juice you can always just use it as a standard marker slate.

The only problems we encountered were more a function of the software than the hardware: it can require a rather firm "slap!" from the sticks... not a good thing when "soft sticks" are recommended working near an actor's face or an animal. Even with the software set up right and a good clap, on some occasions the slate wouldn't fire. Again, these were infrequent and were NOT the fault of the T-Slate, but since they're designed to work together, it's worth mentioning.

Comments about ikan Tablet Production Slate:

I received this slate as a gift over the holidays. I had bought a cheap slate in the past on [@], and it broke after a few uses. So I wanted something that wasn't going to break in the same ways.I think this slate is one of the best quality builds that I've seen. The board attaches to the sticks with a sturdy screw/bolt on each side. Most slates are just glued in, and that for us is the part that broke very quickly. When you pick this thing up, you know it's sturdy. I have an iPad2 with the MovieSlate HD app. However, I keep it in an Otterbox Defender case with the Otterbox Utility Strap. I don't really know if I'd use this in conjunction with my iPad or not. I just prefer it as a dumb slate that you can hang a log notebook on. And it's a nice one when using it in that regard.I don't really have anything bad to say about the slate. However, if you're purchasing this (or any other acrylic slate), keep in mind that it's not ready to mark on with dry erase markers out of the box. It's best to get a bottle of 91% rubbing alcohol and give the slate a nice wipe down before you try marking on it. The alcohol cleans the acrylic board of any contaminants, and afterwards will allow dry erase ink to be removed with much more ease. If you have already marked on the slate and are desperately trying to remove the dry erase ink, don't worry, just get a bottle of this alcohol and clean the board. I also recommend keeping a small bottle of 91% alcohol in your slate/expendables box to help clean the slate, lenses, or other gear that needs to be cleaned on a set. Great for removing residue left from gaffer's tape. With this slate - if you're rubbing down with alcohol, avoid the INT EXT DAY NITE markings, as they aren't engraved, just printed on the top. Though they are easy to replace if they get messed up, just remember for longevity purposes.

Ergonomics are better when compared to other dumb slates.
Adding weight to the bottom for your notes makes it super easy to handle.

But there are weak points where the sticks attach to the slate.
My sticks cracked and the slate broke off during a feature, not sure how but it did. Works well but it's still not as durable as a real TC slate(obviously). Still my top dumb slate choice.

Comments about ikan Tablet Production Slate:

I use this slate for any short film that I shoot. What's best about it is the fact that if I don't have a dry erase marker, I can use the slate in conjunction with my ipad. The frame its self is very sturdy. The actually acrylic piece is manufactured into the clapper with bolts which make it so much more reliable. Definitely better that other that are just hot glued together.

Haven't used it with an iPad yet, but it worked well as a regular slate. As good built quality as any slate i've worked with and held up well over my last 17 day shoot.
Only thing that needed a touch up was some of the markings, just went over them with a black marker after a few weeks of use to keep them clear.
