The black U100 Urban Elite Backpack with 15-17" Laptop Compartment from Pelican delivers total functionality and ergonomic design in a strong pack designed to hold either your 15" or 17" Apple laptop. In addition, its hard shell, impact protected front panel unzips to reveal another safe compartment large enough for an iPad or tablet plus organizer for small stuff such as pens, note pads, or business cards. This panel also serves to protect the pack in case of drops or severe contact during your travels.

Your laptop is held securely within one of the pack's two cavities. This first compartment is an ABS thermoplastic (Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene), watertight and crushproof, and tested to meet IP67 (Ingress Protection) standards of 3' for 30 minutes. An EQ valve helps control pressure while traveling. The second zippered cavity is for anything else you might want to take along-clothes, documents or collateral material.  An additional rear zippered compartment provides for extra storage capability. Access to this top-loading pack is via the easy open push button latch and easy throw zippers.

The U100 is made from 1000 Denier Kodra Nylon and is polyurethane backed for added strength. Kodra nylon has a rougher, fuzzier texture than traditional nylon. It's more abrasion-resistant and generally more lightweight. The front plate is hard polypropylene

The U100 is carried by its padded, adjustable shoulder straps and supported by a sternum strap to help with stability while walking. The pack also comes with Pelican's rigid, well-balanced, rubber molded top carry handle. Compressions straps help you adjust the overall footprint of the pack allowing you to expand or contract the overall size to suit the load you are carrying. The back panel is S-curved and ventilated for maximum comfort.  As a bonus, the bottom of the pack has sling straps that are used for attaching your jacket or bed roll. And, since a day in the field can be long and arduous, Pelican has provided a hidden water bottle pocket on the side of the pack.

This pack is made by Pelican-a company world recognized as a leader in the design and manufacturer of protective bags and packs for amateur, professional and military use. The backpack comes with a one-year warranty while the plastic casing comes with Pelican's lifetime guarantee of excellence.

I use this case to carry my Laptop, iPad, wireless router and various tools associated with my job as a live sound operatorI love the waterproof laptop compartment, the carry straps are comfortable and durable. It is good being able to padlock the laptop compartment, but having to use 2 padlocks is a bit annoying. Also I have a 13" laptop and use the block spacers provided, though the glue isn't sufficient and they just don't stick properly. My only other complaint is the outside pocket with the plastic protective cover. It would be good if this pocket was fixed to the outside of the backpack rather than integrated into it because when you fill the other compartments it makes this compartment difficult to use and close. I guess in general there are heaps of pockets but loading pockets in one layer affects what you can put in the next layer and in some cases making them unusable.

I generally am not one to write very many reviews of products, but after the trouble I had finding any information on this bag I figured I would do my best to put some information out there.

First of all, this bag from B&H arrived fairly well packed and survived the trip across the world to my APO. I ordered through B&H because unlike other retailers, they were willing and able to ship this to me where I am overseas. Mail normally gets here pretty well crushed, but the packaging for this protected it fairly well (not that it couldn't protect itself.)

The main laptop compartment was quite enough for my 15.6" laptop, though the adhesive squares provided to help fill extra space seem laughably inadequate and the instructions with them are equally bad.

The tablet pouch located on the far outside of the pack also leaves a great deal to be desired. It seems like it would work if you had a 9 inch or smaller tablet that was completely bare bones, but will not fit with ANYTHING else installed on it. I have an ASUS EeePad Transformer with the keyboard connected (makes it about as thick as 2 iPads stacked together) and there is no way that thing will cram in there. Even if I remove the keyboard and slide in the tablet by itself, the pouch lacks the adequate depth and the tablet protrudes about 1 inch above the face of the hard protective cover on the outside and rubs right against the pouch's zipper.

One side of the bag has 6 MOLLE loops on it. (That is 2 wide by 3 tall) That would allow you to add one M4 mag pouch or other small item, but not much. The other side has a nifty little expandable water bottle holder. It is cute, but doesn't seem too sturdy. I feel like if the water bottle got snagged on something you would tear the pouch pretty quickly.

Also, anyone who thinks this backpack offers a large capacity has never had to carry any quantity of equipment. For military personnel and others who have to haul their electronics as well as maybe a little clothing, paperwork, and hygiene items, this is NOT the bag to do it all. I emptied out the contents of my normal S.O.C. Bugout Bag and moved my electronics to this Pelican backpack. I was able to put my electronics only in the bag, with about half the remaining contents having to stay in my S.O.C. bag.

The main compartment (not the laptop case)is little more than 5 inches in width when fully expanded. It will not hold any large items, which leads to the question, "does this backpack have ANY compartment that will hold anything large?" The answer is no. There is a small pouch on top in the center which is good for about one set of full size noise cancelling headphones. The tablet pouch is currently holding my iPod touch and the rest of that compartment is holding my tablet inside of a CaseLogic sleeve.

The way the bag is designed there is no support for the weight of all of your belongings other than the latch on the main hardened compartment. By that I mean that if that latch were to fail there are no straps or anything else to tighten or reinforce that point of failure. If while you are carring your bag that latch button gets bumped, "crash," there goes everything falling backwards while the shoulder straps remain over your shoulders. I wish Pelican would have added some compression straps or something that would secure from the rear to the front of the backpack and support the closing of the main hardened compartment.

In retrospect, I wish I would not have purchased this backpack for the price. I think the Pelican laptop sleeve is much more reasonably priced and provides arguably better protection. Pelican makes pretty great hard cases. Putting one of those in a better tactical bag (S.O.C., 5.11) would serve much better than this little handbag with a hard case built in. While the shoulder straps themselves are comfortable and secure, there is no lap belt with this bag. It shouldn't really matter because this is not a bag you would carry all day. It doesn't hold enough. I am at the point where I will have 2 backpacks to take everywhere I go if I use this.
I will say that weight is not an issue though. Because the bag has so little capacity, you could pretty much fill it with iron and be able to carry it with ease. However, all that iron would be held solely by that little latch at the top of the hard case.

Overall it is not a terrible bag - if what you are looking for is just a small bag with a hard case built in. But as I have said, you can add a Pelican sleeve to a real tactical backpack and be much better served. Perhaps my expectations were too much. But where I work the expectation is generally that zippers should be durable because they're going to be abused and pulled on, bags should have lots of MOLLE webbing so you can add more pouches to things, and that your bags should be able to hold more than you can carry (and that you should then fill them up and carry them anyways.)

I use for the everyday war getting downtown on the train or subway, throwing it in and out of the truncks of taxi's and limo's. THE ONLY THING WRONG IS THAT IT COULD BE DEEPER AND WIDER,I LIKE TO KEEP MY LAPTOP IN A NEOPREEN CASE 15" TO 17" IT IS VERY TIGHT.

I travel extensively for work and need a durable, well designed way to safely carry my laptop and work related items. I've tried a courier bag, backpack, briefcase and about everything else out there. Finally, Pelican has developed a way to manage everything in an organized way that carries really comfortably and I will never have to worry about my laptop! The hard shell compartment is waterproof and secure.
I definitely recommend this bag if you travel, carry a laptop and are not wanting to be a part of the briefcase/shoulder bag awkward carry crew.

As a Department of Defense contractor jumping on an off Hercules C-130s and helicopters to recover WWII MIAs from inside glaciers and rainforests around the world I rely on this backpack for my MacBook Pro, iPad, SatPhones and ACR PLBs PLUS a set of clothing and survival essentials. Its comforable and replaces an awkward shoulder bag. The water tight compartment for the MacBook was the clincher for me. The Pelican Urban Elite Packpack very adequately protects the iPad and supplies well thought-out organization for other mission essentials.

Comments about Pelican U100 Urban Elite Backpack with 15-17" Laptop Compartment (Black):

I travel often and this backpack organizes and keeps my MacBook Retina safe. Its solid and comfortable. Zippers are strong and there's a lot of attention to detail of the bag...even the bottle openers on the straps. Couple of minor complaints..the laptop compartment is a tad big for the retina even with the additional foam pads. The other is the thickness of the back..if you dont overload it, it should fit under the seat of an airplane. If you do load it, it will be tight.
