Comments about Synology DiskStation DS1512+ 5 Bay NAS Server:
Not too difficult to setup, and once setup the web management is easy to use. I'm not sure how pricing or performance compares to other brands but this stands out, and the expansion options for the DS1512 are good to know about.
I haven't installed any apps since I'm using this mostly for backups and it seems that you'll spike the CPU during disk operations more than you will the memory, so most people probably won't need the RAM upgrade. Performance is great using the native RAID modes, you'll want to make sure you have a gigabit switch if you're going to max this out with high volumes of storage or transfer, especially with B&H's kit with the Hitachi 4TB drives.
I'm a bit concerned with thin/thick provisioning and what might happen if something gets trespassed, but it's not the end of the world since I use this in addition to online backups.

Comments about Synology DiskStation DS1512+ 5 Bay NAS Server:
Price were the cheapest out of many other retailers. Getting great out of the NAS to be used as multimedia server DLNA, download station and many other awesome features from Diskstation. I move from a DS209 to this unit and it was much faster in terms of performance of a NAS. Setup/Migration from old harddrives was a breeze. Highly recommended for anyone looking for a robust NAS and great buying experience from B&H.

Comments about Synology DiskStation DS1512+ 5 Bay NAS Server:
I have been using this product for almost a month now and it is hands down the best 5 bay NAS on the market right now. I had been using a Drobo FS before the Synology and it was showing its age by the slow transfers. I was only getting about 30-50MBs, it would not fully saturate my gigabit network connection. The Synology is 2-3x the speed of the Drobo FS. I almost went with the Drobo 5N because I loved how you could mix and match drives with the Drobo. Though I learned you could now do the same with Synology products. I have had no issues running 1x3TB, 3x2TB, and 1x1TB drives. Configuration is also much better than Drobo and many more options. There are also a great number of useful apps to download. I cannot recommend this NAS enough, if you are in the market for a NAS don't hesitate on the Synology DS1512+.

Comments about Synology DiskStation DS1512+ 5 Bay NAS Server:
All this amazing hardware wouldn't be worth without quality software. DSM 4.1 is all that and more. Everything you could possibly want and PAINLESS to set it all up. Only con would be the 1512+ makes you wish your little at home router came with link aggregation. This is top tier, non nosense, NAS at it's finest.

Comments about Synology DiskStation DS1512+ 5 Bay NAS Server:
Running RAID6 with five WD 3TB Red drives. Runs fast, cool & quiet. Excellent throughput for large files (movie transfers saturate single gigE), with decent throughput for smaller files. Synology Assistance software makes setup and tailoring quite simple. Good set of software packages to support most users' needs… and differentiates Synology from other NAS manufacturers.
A couple minor annoyances that keep this from being a five-star product:
1) The DSM software starts setup of Synology's proprietary SHR disk management by default-- even though one explicitly indicates not to do so in setup. SHR install is easy to halt and instead set up RAID, but software should respect settings.
2) The screws that hold the DS1512+ cover in place are small, soft and easy to strip. Makes adding the additional RAM module a bit harder than need be.
Otherwise, despite some plastic parts, is sufficiently robust in design with good cooling even under load. Synology software makes the DS1512+ easy to manage and simple to monitor. By using the Synology support forums I was easily able to find a compatible UPS.
FWIW:
1) I immediately expanded the RAM to 3GB. So far, with light use (file sharing, streaming, backups) the extra RAM hasn't been needed. Processor hasn't been taxed, either.
2) Buyers considering a smaller four-bay NAS might want to read up on the different between RAID5 and RAID6 when using drives greater than 1TB. There is enough math to show that you might want RAID6 (if not 10) due to the increasing likelihood of concurrent failures. (Consider how manufacturers used to warranty drives for five years and now 2-3 years is the norm). This is why I paid the extra to move up to a five-bay NAS rather than the four-bay I was originally planning.

Comments about Synology DiskStation DS1512+ 5 Bay NAS Server:
Bought this DS1512+ to replace the D-Link DNS-323 NAS I've been using for years. Installed 3x Western Digital Red 3TB hard drives configured as Synology Hybrid RAID (SHR). This DS1512+ is 20x faster in transfer speed and offers much better user account control compared to the D-Link.
Set up was easy, and documentation is good. Set up a print server, link aggregation and Plex Media Server in no time.

Comments about Synology DiskStation DS1512+ 5 Bay NAS Server:
After 2 weeks of productive use, the DiskStation is competently and quietly keeping my various personal and business clouds up and in sync with many devices. The install was a breeze and the vpn software was very easy. We are also using the array for scheduled backups and the backup software is easy and straighforward. As a small business owner, I highly encourage others to buy this product. Definitley get enterprise-class drives for it - RAID/SHR is more reliable on enterprise-class drives due to handling of bad sectors. Finally, I am impressed with the build quality of the DiskStation - you get the feeling that this piece of hardware was engineered to exacting standards. Time will tell on the reliability but so far, I am very impressed.

Comments about Synology DiskStation DS1512+ 5 Bay NAS Server:
I had a aging linux based fileserver that needed replacing. Figured Synology would cost just a little more than building a new one myself and was impressed with the features. Installation was fast and simple. Online expansion of the array works flawlessly. Started with two new 2TB drives and copied my data over. Then I was able to expand my new array by adding two old 2TB drives from my linux server, even though they were not on the supported drive list.
The Synology features were as promised. So far, I've setup NFS, AFP, some user accounts, Time Machine support for backups of our MacOS machines. The iTunes sharing works great for music, having trouble with video though. But the DSVideo app on my iPhone can play anything but the Synology can only transcode one video stream at a time so this works best for movies that are already encoded for the iPhone. Playback over NFS to XBMC running on three Apple TVs is flawless, even while uploading new data to the Synology at 100Mbps (my network limit).
There are so many more built in services, I feel I'm just scratching the surface of what this unit can do. Easy configuration, there's a minor thing with NFS vs. XBMC and MacOS that you can lookup on google (manually set insecure), otherwise the web interface works very well. DDNS support could use more services, but I'm sure there is a work around.
The other major benefit is that this unit uses 43 watts active with four drives and hibernates down to 23 watts, as measured with my kilowatt meter. Far less than the old server. I also don't even notice a delay when waking the system up from hibernation.
Would buy again, or definitely will buy the expansion modules when needed.

Comments about Synology DiskStation DS1512+ 5 Bay NAS Server:
This is our second Synology. Our first Synology is a 4 bay system that we outgrew. WE will replace the drives in the older unit and will use the old one for a backup.
This new 5 bay is extremely fast, quiet and seems to outperform the older unit which has given us excellent service. The service at Synology has always been great. We will be adding a surveillance system using the Synology NVR Application. You cannot find a bad review on this product and my experience with the company over the years is superior to any computer hardware company.
You cannot do better than to buy from B&H either.

Comments about Synology DiskStation DS1512+ 5 Bay NAS Server:
The DS1512+ is an upgrade from my DS211 and contains all of my images - about 250,000 of them. I mirror this to my DroboPro, so I have two RAIDs protecting these images. Synology Assistant is capable and sometimes a bit opaque, but reliable. It always finds my two Synology NAS devices. For a simple mirror, I use FreeFileSync and for huge archives, Genie Backup Manager Pro 9.0 - both work well with the Synology.

Comments about Synology DiskStation DS1512+ 5 Bay NAS Server:
I would highly recommend this Synology NAS unit. Being new to using NAS drive, I was concern with setup but everything was so easy with Synology user interface. I have both a PC and a couple of MAC at home and now I am able to use the 1512+ to backup all three computers plus my office files. Next I am trying to use the media server capability and use it as my music server for my home sound system. I am also getting the expension unit. I am using SHR-2 (which is really equivalent to RAID 6) with 5 x 4TB drive.

We needed a means of storing data but having access to it from other computers. Out IT guys recommended this, NAS, and 3T RED WD hardrive compared to an online cloud storage. The cost is much less overall and we can expand to 15T. This is a great inexpensive server alternative
