Connect eSATA Drives To New Macs

Better speeds, better value. With the eSATA Hub Thunderbolt Series, now you can connect eSATA drives to your Thunderbolt-compatible Mac. Connect up to two drives to the Hub, which connects to the Thunderbolt port on your new Mac. The eSATA Hub is the perfect solution for companies that use eSATA drives, but have upgraded their Macs to versions without ExpressCard/34 slots. It also offers a great way for photographers or other creatives to boost eSATA drive performance

Unleashing Full eSATA Speeds

The ExpressCard/34 maximum bus speed is 2.5GB/second, which limits eSATA 3GB/second transfer speeds. The eSATA Hub clears this bottleneck, since Thunderbolt's 10Gb/s provides more than enough speed to accommodate 3GB/second. Achieve the full speed potential of your eSATA drives

Bring New Value To Your Storage

You already own eSATA drives, but can't connect them to your new Mac. The eSATA Hub modernizes your drives and puts them back to work. You don't have to buy new drives and scrap the old ones. eSATA and Thunderbolt connections are even software RAID compatible. Upgrade your storage with Thunderbolt technology

Daisy Chain For Convenience

Thunderbolt technology supports daisy chaining, so you can connect a display or other Thunderbolt device to the eSATA Hub. This means you can connect, for example, your high-end LaCie 324i display and your eSATA Hub to your Mac via a single Thunderbolt cable

So, this is the 3rd kind of hub I've owned. I own a USB 2.0 hub built-in to my iMac stand (4-port minus 1 to connect), a Nitro AV FW800 hub (8-port minus 1 to connect), and this one (2x Thunderbolt and 2x eSATA minus 1 Thunderbolt to connect).First off, let me start by saying that the build quality is superb. Very solid construction and the transfer speeds, I absolutely love. I love the fact that now my 2012 iMac gains 2 eSATA ports in addition to connecting a Thunderbolt drive.Thunderbolt speeds are as if they weren't being daisy chained with this hub.Let me explain how I'm connected:Late 2012 27" iMac- Thunderbolt to DVI-I adapter (External monitor)- Thunderbolt to Drobo 5D--- Thunderbolt to LaCie eSATA Hub------ eSATA to RAID------ eSATA to RAID------ Thunderbolt to HDMI adapter (external monitor)--------OR (depending on my needs)------ Thunderbolt to FW800 adapter-------- FW800 to powered Nitro AV FW800 HubYes, it's a lot. I'm a film editor and need that setup. One thing I would've liked is a third Thunderbolt port on the back. Since you have to connect this hub using a Thunderbolt cable (not included btw, so tack on at least additional $ to the overall price of this piece), you don't really gain any Thunderbolt ports since it takes 1 port away from any device just to connect to it. I would've liked to have gained a Thunderbolt port to further expand my capabilities so I don't have to take one Thunderbolt device out to plug another in...I get that this is an "eSATA Hub" but still...an extra port for this price would be a no-brainer for most creative professionals who rely on Thunderbolt speed and expandability. For that, I really call this more of an "expansion" than a "hub" since all it's really doing is allowing you to connect 2 eSATA drives in addition to the Thunderbolt drive you would've plugged into the Thunderbolt port in your computer.Finally...Be wary of how you're connecting your drives to the hub!Using the above scenario (iMac to Drobo to Hub) rendered the 2nd eSATA port useless. It doesn't function at all. My computer won't notice it at all. I have to turn off the Drobo in order for my Mac to see the 2nd eSATA drive. Why is that??? It's powered... Thunderbolt (10Gb/s)... What's the problem?Apparently, it's all in how you connect your devices. I wanted to make sure my Drobo was getting the fastest performance, so I figured to plug the Drobo directly into the iMac would be the fastest. Speed difference is negligible, but I didn't have access to both eSATA drives at the same time. So make sure you go from your Mac to the hub then to your Drobo or other Thunderbolt device!Overall, I'm happy with this, but having an extra Thunderbolt port and even a small (.5 meter) Thunderbolt cable would've made this a 5-star review.

Connected to 2012 MAC MINI. OS 10.8 2-Bay JOBD esata Drive, Blue-ray DVD External Burner, G-Tech MINI 1TB Raids

Esata Speed is max when using the the HUB. Single drive enclosures work best. Works fine with external Blu-Ray burner. No problems using HD dock.

What isn't so great is compatability. I found, as others have, that the Unit works flawlessly when connected to an "Esata only" external HD enclosure interface.

When connected to a multiple external interface device (FW800-FW400-USB) it's really hit or miss whether the drive will ever mount. Then if you ever get it to mount, the HD will just drop out, sometimes as soon as you try and access the drive or sometimes it stays mounted. I've actually had this HUB wipe out my access to my G-TECH raids when this has happened. Requiring them to be re-formatted. So use with caution.

    Comments about LaCie eSATA Hub:

I bought this product primarily for video editing to use with my two CalDigit eSATA RAIDs until the prices of TB RAIDs with high capacity SSDs come down from the stratosphere. The build quality is great - the unit is very solidly constructed. The biggest drawback is that one or both drives occasionally fail to mount and have to be restarted or reconnected. This is a nuisance to be sure, but it happens fairly infrequently. Once the drives are mounted, the unit actually works very well. I've noticed a significant improvement in performance - for the first time since I've owned these drives I'm seeing speeds close to native SATA, which is impressive. Overall I'm quite happy with this product. It's an imperfect, but competent solution that allows me to max out the performance of my existing system. With both FW and eSATA dead in the water, I don't foresee too many new products coming out that will support these legacy technologies. At some point I'll have to bite the bullet and upgrade my drives. Until then I'm glad there's a product that does what I need reasonably well.

      Comments about LaCie eSATA Hub:

Great product. Simple, straightforward, and does what it says it does. I am using this in a portable rig to connect a Mac Mini to an existing eSATA disk array for multitrack music recording. This is hardly scientific, but connected to a 4-disk, 10k RPM hardware RAID-5 array, I'm getting ~170MB/s sustained writes and 225MB/s reads. This same configuration run via the mini's FireWire 800 port only gets about 60&70 MB/s, respectively.

I have not had any problems at all connecting to the Sans Digital array I own. No port multiplier problems, and all components sleep/wake and shutdown/boot cleanly.

I have no complaints other than maybe that the device, when turned on its side, is taller than the height of a mini, and slightly exceeds one rack-U in thickness. And the activity light can't be defeated. Whatever - great device!!

                  Comments about LaCie eSATA Hub:

I got a LaCie eSata Hub about a year ago to hook my early 2011 MacBook Pro to a RAID drive for my photos. So far it has worked well. I can easily get 150 MB/s access rates via the hub (this is 1.5 Gb/s), and I haven't had any problems with disks.

However, occasionally when my MBP wakes from sleep it "loses" the screen that I have hooked up via the Thunderbolt connecter. You have to unplug and replug the screen for it to be recognized. This happens infrequently, about once a month. Otherwise, no complaints. This is much cheaper and more flexible than trading in my Sata RAID drive for a Thunderbolt RAID.

The only thing it does not work on is my 12TB GRaid (striped for speed). But I didn't really expect that. But for every other eSata drive, the speed was actaully faster than when I used the LaCie CardBus.

                            Comments about LaCie eSATA Hub:

I have been using this hub for a couple of weeks and it has been working very well. I have been using it on set and near set with good reliability. I also use this for my own projects and data/file management.

I have only daisy chained, via Thunderbolt, to the Lacie 2TB Little Big Disk. I took out the 5400rpm drives and stuck a pair of 1TB 7200RPM drives inside. I do not recommend SSDs for RAID. Speed to the Little Big Disk has been quite good. Sorry, I don't have any benchmark numbers.

I have been hooking up the Newer Tech Voyager Q, OWC Mercury Elite Mini and Dual Mini, via eSATA, with good results. These have all been using 7200RPM spinning disk HDDs. Glyph drives also worked well. An older Aleratek eSATA "Toaster" runs noticably slower than the Voyager Q. It's probably SATA I (1.5Gb/s).

There have been reports of some trouble with the Lacie eSATA/Thunderbolt Hub, but during these first few weeks of usage I have had excellent performance. I still have to see if it will play well with other Non-Lacie Thunderbolt devices.

My 2007 17" MacBook Pro has only one T-Bolt port, so being able to daisy chain multiple T-Bolt devices is helpful. I think you do need to be aware of what devices are where within the T-Bolt chain. I believe monitors should be at the end of the line. I am usually only hooking up hard drives via T-Bolt and eSATA, so all has been well. It is a good idea to follow the LaCie setup guide, regarding device plugging, power on/off, etc.

Thunderbolt 2 is coming, so you may want to wait and see if there is an upgrade. I regret waiting so long and should have gotten this a long time ago.

I have two of these units the first one works terrific the second drive on the second unit doesn't seem to want to mount. Not sure if it assigned a thunderbolt Id to each drive and I ran out of ids. But it works great for the three drives that work. Very fast and no hiccups.

I bought one of these to speed up my workflow on the job I am currently working on. I am a media manager in the TV industry and we are pumping out 3.5-4TB of data/day. This would NOT be possible with our current setup without this bad boy. I loved the first one so much I immediately bought a second one, daisy-chained it and now enjoy transfer speeds of up to 190MB/s. I can see how this will become an essential part of my media management kit. These boxes run cool even after 20 straight hours of transfers/day. Worth every penny.

Great eSATA/Thunderbolt hub for digital downloads/transfer of video footage. I use it as a part of my Digital Download kit on commercial and motion picture video shoots. Solid product and a good investment. Absolutely worth buying two if planning on working with a lot of media.

I've gone from a MacPro, dual processor beast running in my home office, to a MacBookPro that I can take with me anywhere (and save alot of energy leaving on all night for rendering)- in large part because of this hub.I'm a video editor with stack upon stacks upon stacks of hard drives- for many years I used an eSata bay that I purchased off [*]- a generic device that has worked perfectly for the last two years- connected to my Mac Pro Tower. The thunderbolt drives are still too expensive for the amount of storage I need, and this hub allows me to utilize my drives, and 4 slot bay perfectly with my MBP. The drives are hot swappable, everything works as it should, sleep, restart- etc.. I would say its more reliable than the eSata card on my MacPro, as if it put that to sleep, I would need to restart in order for the drives to mount! Nice (and really necessary) piece for me.

                                    Comments about LaCie eSATA Hub:

Before purchasing this hub I was using the expresscard/34 to esata adapter on a 2011 macbook pro. That adapter works well but since I own several drives expansion was necessary.

My first concern after research was the compatiblity with multi-interface external enclosures. I own several esata/fw800/usb drives and usually run these concurrently along with an external monitor connected to the second thuderbolt port. No problems here. Everything works beautifully.

I was able to transfer 500gb of video under 50 minutes!! Another cool thing is that it's bus powered which minimizes cables.

I use the hub to add another drive to my iMac. So far it has performed well, but initially it took rebooting the computer several times in order for it to identify the drive so I could format it.

So far it works perfectly. Took it out, plugged it in, plugged in my esata reader (newer tech voyager) and it worked perfectly. So far no issues at all.
The unit is very small and takes up almost no space on the desktop.
I'm only using it with the newer tech voyager so I dont know how it does with multiple devices connected.

Have backed up large folders to WD Green drives for archiving - folders have been in the area of 125gb. Transfer time has been respectable in the neighborhood of 20-25 minutes.

Overall, it does exactly what it's supposed to do with zero fuss.

This was a lifesaver for me with all the bare sata drives I have... great product.
