While this product was designed with videography in mind I've been using this product for regular photo shoots with great success! Having the capability to change the temperature of the light from 3200 - 5600K has made lighting shoots so enjoyable and easy. You can control the temperature and dimness/brightness settings using the digital display on the back of the light or the remote that comes with it. Ensuring the correct output you need, instead of having to guess that you have the right temperature. Because they are LED the power draw is greatly reduced compared with traditional lights and with the added flexibility of AC/DC I'm also able to be on location with these lights and not have to worry about running out of juice. I haven't yet had a chance to use it for video but we'll be soon and I'll repost my thoughts then. The only drawback/s that I've noticed is that because the lights are LED the drop-off point is shorter than a standard light so you need to either get a beefier light [like Ikan's IB1000], or have multiple lights [which you would for a studio setup anyway], or adjust the distance from which you are shooting. Keep in mind though that the drop-off difference isn't bad, it's just something to be aware of. Besides that, the construction is solid and the digital display is great for making sure you are set to the correct temperature and brightness you want for the environment your shooting.

I bought 2 units on sale, and they are decent considering the money spent. It provides strong output, and is easy to use. It's nice to be able to dial in color temperature. I purchased the optional Anton Bauer type battery adapter, and yolk. The battery adapter is fine, but the cable that goes from p-tap to 4 pin really should be a 90 degree connector - it sticks out awkwardly. The yolk is available, presumably, because the original mounting option is a bit flimsy. The yolk is OK, but it slides up and down the channel on the fixture, so you can lock it in place, but again, it's awkward when you want to tilt the light. The locking screw that tightens against the stud of your light stand is cheaply made. Another thing to be aware of is that as you narrow the barn doors, the light becomes more focused and starts to show the pattern of the LED's. I tried removing the reflectors from the barn doors, and it had a minimal effect. I put a layer of 1/2 opal directly against the LED's, and monitor the position of the barn doors to manage the problem. The wider the barn doors - the better. I don't know if this issue is specific to the Ikan lights, or a byproduct of the barn doors.

Comments about ikan IB500 Bi-Color LED Studio Light with Anton Bauer Battery Mount:

In comparison to my non LED photo/video lights these have been great so far. I've only used them a couple of times so far but the digital display, remote control ability and non existent heat are all huge upsides. I hope they last a long time and will be getting another larger LED to have a complete three point lighting set up.

Comments about ikan IB500 Bi-Color LED Studio Light with Anton Bauer Battery Mount:

I actually really like this light. It's not the greatest but I bought this light with a battery back and yoke for it for a good deal on B&H and I'm really happy with it.

It has a lot of punch for its size. It's actually a little smaller than I would want it and thick, but it kicks out a lot of light so it works out. The CRI is only 89 according to the website, but I plan on using this light for run-and-gun shoots with a anton bauer battery, and on BRoll in order to brighten up the room on wide shots without having to bring too much equipment in the room.

It has a 60 degree angle output, and you can go from 3200 to 5600 kelvin, so it has a lot of play for the price. I think for my uses it will be very good to me.

I'm thinking of buying a couple more and using it to light greenscreens from underneath. We will see.

Comments about ikan IB500 Bi-Color LED Studio Light with Anton Bauer Battery Mount:

So far, so good. Kelvin controls come in handy. The remote control is good if you're working solo or need to mount these high. You can also mount vertical or horizontal which is nice. Not sure how I feel about the backlit display yet. We'll see how long it lasts. Pushing the touch-screen buttons is loud--but the User Manual outlines how to disable the sound. Currently I use the AB battery plate. But I'd like to rig it to use NP-F970 batteries in the future. Quality studio lights ...bright enough for most needs.

I shoot professional video - a lot of talking head and interview-stye videos and these are a great addition to my lighting setup. They are pretty solid, have a little bit of sturdy weight to them, and are a nice construction of solid metal. Definitely brighter and have more power than I expected, and having the ability to change color temperature at the touch of a button is awesome! Also having the remote control is pretty handy as well.

The specs speak for themselves. I would highly recommend this light to fresh filmmakers who are in search of a portable, flexible solution. The CRI was one of my main concerns when I first bought 2 of these but I was later relieved to know that Ikan rated it at around 89 CRI. There doesn't seem to be a troubling amount of colour quality lost when I import footage into Resolve (on a calibrated HP Dreamcolour Z24x). Beyond this, I *would* still like to know what the TLCI rating of this light is (CRI ratings work well for tungsten lights, but they do not accurately represent an LED light's colour quality as much as TLCI does).

Comments about ikan IB500 Bi-Color LED Studio Light with Anton Bauer Battery Mount:

When B&H offered the Ikan IB500 at a special one-day discounted rate I decided it was a good time to grab one. I'd rented it before for interview video shoots and was happy with its quality and ease of use. It is a somewhat large instrument. While the Ikan is not nearly as compact as, say, the Lowel Blender (another great LED light) it does give a whole lot more light (Ikan 500w vs. Blender 56w). The Ikan makes for a very nice key or fill light for interviews, depending upon your situation (with the Blender a nice back or hair light). Ikan also offers a softbox solution (sold separately) designed specifically to fit this light, turning it into a nicely diffused key light. Its a relatively sturdy design made with a great deal of metal materials, though there is some plastic in the design as well. What I like most about this light: I love having a built-in dimmer. It eliminates the need for separate dimmer boxes. I love the ability to adjust the color balance. It eliminates the need for gels (in most situations). I love the wireless remote control that allows me flexibility in adjusting the light wherever I am in the room. The fact that the adjustments of both the light level and the color balance offer a numerical value on the digital screen on the back of the light is, for me, a huge plus allowing for more precise setting, especially if I need to recreate a light set-up or match something. Lowel's Blender, by contrast, only has dials with no exact numbering for the light settings. You just have to eye up your setting or put a mark on the dial, which is by no means exact. And, finally, being LED it remains cool to the touch even after long periods of use. Just pack it up and go when the shoot is done. Some cons...I do wish it was a bit more compact design, but the added coverage area provided by the larger instrument helps a great deal in a variety of situations. The barn doors aren't particularly useful in focusing LED light but they do come in handy for clipping on diffusion or a gel. All in all a great light for which I am very pleased to have found at a great price!

Comments about ikan IB500 Bi-Color LED Studio Light with Anton Bauer Battery Mount:

I bought this light for my video business. We often do multiple setups with a short time period and needed a flexible LED. The bi-color LEDs provide tungsten and daylight and any mixture in between. On my Panasonic HPX250 video camera the tungsten (displayed on the fixture as 3200K) read at 3600K and the daylight at 5600K as advertised.

I noted that when I first set the light to tungsten is seemed just a tad less red than a true incandescent lamp and the reading on my camera confirmed my first impression. This may make mixing the light with true tungsten fixtures difficult without a slight warming gel.

This light kit shipped with a nice YK500 yoke for grid mounting. It also shipped with an Anton-Bauer battery plate and XLR P-tap cable. This was a selling point for me since I use AB batteries. With a battery mounted on the light it is easy to move it around for different setups without worrying about a hot fixture or AC availability. The light accepts a standard 4-pin XLR power connector and is supplied with a 12V AC adaptor.

The construction is solid and the supplied remote control may be useful to some. Remember to remove the protective plastic from the LED reflector and the barn doors! It is a light amber in color and will slightly change the color of the light. The top and bottom barn doors have built-in external clips for gels, diffusion, etc. Each barn door also has internal clips.

The carrying handle and mounting bracket can be moved to any side of the fixture. This allows for horizontal or vertical coverage patterns using the full output of the light.

The light does NOT come with a protective case.

I am a still photographer, and I sometimes find myself in pretty dark situations in my real estate work. We mostly shoot bracketed HDR and use the Ikan IB500 as fill light. The instrument is easy work with. Dialing the intensity and color temperature is really a snap with the remote. It subtly boosts the ambient just right for a good image. It's not too heavy and the price was right.
