The N56VZ-DS71 15.6" Notebook Computer (Black) from ASUS features a sleek hairline-textured metallic design that is sure to turn heads. The precision-etched hairline cover offers added accentuation with an illuminated ASUS logo. This ASUS notebook also has a ripple-effect speaker mesh, which imbues an elegant look to complement the deluxe audio offered through Bang & Olufsen ICEpower speakers and SonicMaster technology.
The 15.6" widescreen display is backlit with LED lamps, which brighten faster, use less power and provide better picture quality than their CCFL counterparts. The screen has a 16:9 aspect ratio, which is also the standard for HDTVs. The Full HD 1920 x 1080 native resolution is supported by a nVIDIA GeForce GT 650M graphics card with 2GB of dedicated memory.
The system is powered by a quad-core 2.3GHz Intel Core i7-3610QM processor. It also has 8GB of DDR3 RAM, a 750GB 5400rpm hard drive, a Blu-ray player with DVD burning capabilities, Gigabit Ethernet, 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, an integrated webcam and microphone. This is a great machine! I was looking at laptops for a while and had pretty much decided on the N55, but then I found this, and wow. It's so fast! I haven't had it lag yet. The HDMI AND VGA ports are nice too, especially since a lot of computers now only have HDMI. Side note: You can clone and extend using both the HDMI and VGA, but I'm not sure yet if you can use them both together. The keyboard is really nice, especially the backlight. It feels really smooth (and sounds good) and the only issue I have with it is that sometimes some of the keys squeak against the body. Trackpad is awesome, multi-touch gestures work perfectly, and the two finger scrolling is very smooth. The buttons on the trackpad are a little annoying to find at night, but they both work just fine. As for the screen, my only complaint is it's too bright! Just kidding, but I have it on the lowest setting and that's plenty bright most of the time. It also looks grats and the matte over glossy was a good choice by Asus. The speakers are also really good, especially with the external sub attached. In fact, when I first used it I was surprised that the sond was coming from my computer! The battery life is fine, you can get about 4.5 hours on battery saving with the creen brightness down and wireless on. Not really that bad if you ask me, becasue who would really want to work on their computer for 4.5 hours straight? Not this guy. The only issue I've had so far with this computer is the wireless. When I first got it, it worked fine, but then it started dropping my network and I had to disconnect and reconnect about every two or three minutes. So I called customer support and they were very helpful and simply directed me to the new driver for the wireless card. After that, presto, no more dropped signal. That gives the customer service a +1 in my book. Oh, and one more thing. A faster hard drive would be nicer (especially when adding songs to iTunes), but boot times aren't unreasonably slow and it'll wake from sleep in about two seconds thanks to the Instant On feature.Pros: Screen, keyboard, numeric pad, Blu-ray, speakers, trackpad, USB 3.0, Instant OnCons: Battery life can be short depending on usage, hard drive speed (7200 would be nice), wireless driver issues, a little heavyAlso, be warned, this computer is a very wide 15.6". I say that because we bought a 15.6" bag at first, and then had to return it for the 17" bag because this machine wouldn't fit in the smaller bag.Hope this helps!

This laptop is pretty good for gaming and school work. There are something that I don't like on this laptop. 1. Weak wifi connection. At first I thought it was my router's problem but it wasn't. I researched and found out that other people also have the same problem, it disconnects once in a while. It has gotten better now but it was a pain to go though all that. 2. When u first get the laptop, the start up was really slow. When I turn it on some times it is still pretty slow. But everything else is fine. Oh also u might not like the mouse at first but once u get use to it, it is not too bad

The Good: Video rendering is quite fast on this with the dedicated video card and i7 processor.*Can handle running about 4 or 5 virtual machines *no problem if I need to do testing with different OS's or network setups.*Wireless and bluetooth card gets strong consistent signal*The laptop is very quiet and runs cool, doesn't get hot around the keyboard or touchpad at all.*Display looks great with HD content, if you set the resolution at 1920x1080 you may need to set the zoom higher on some webpages or documents. Viewing angles are good. The only complaint I have about this is the HDD. Why Asus decided to put a slow 5400 rpm drive in a laptop of this caliber is beyond me. I replaced it with a 480 GB SSD and it is incredibly fast now. I only used it once with the drive it came with to extract the drivers and it was painfully slow, I reccomend upgrading to a SSD if you get this. The battery life is decent for websurfing or document/office work but if you are doing processor/graphic intensive workk plug it in as the battery will drain fast.

Comments about ASUS N56VZ-DS71 15.6" Notebook Computer (Black):
Bought this and had it shipped to New Zealand. Wasn't too much hassle; even after paying duty and tax, it was still cheaper than the N56VM model that is the only variant of this laptop available here. There is really no comparable laptop.Arrived in one piece, no issues whatsoever getting it set up. Uninstalled all the junk, although I would recommend a fresh install for anyone with the means and the patience.Build quality is excellent; on the same level or higher than my Vaio S series that I bought last year. It is also thinner than I expected, and lighter than I expected. I thought this thing would be a BRICK, but it's definitely a reasonable size and weight. The brushed aluminium back is gorgeous, and I'm definitely a huge fan of that.Matte screen is excellent. FAR better than the aforementioned Vaio S. 1080p is perfect for a 15" screen. I don't require an extremely high quality screen, but this is definitely a great screen for a laptop.Keyboard is solid. No flex at all, and the backlighting is nice.I used the touchpad briefly. It works fine, but I strongly prefer a traditional mouse, so I will always carry one with me.Battery life is fine. I estimate 3 - 4 hours max with light use. Likely less than an hour with heavy use. For this kind of laptop, I think it's unreasonable to expect much more than that.Speakers are average, but I will be using my headphones anyway. They lack depth; everything sounds dull on every laptop speaker I've ever heard. My cheapo PC speakers (although I do have a subwoofer) sound a thousand times better, but for a laptop, it's passable.Performance is good for gaming, although I will not be playing anything on 1080p. Borderlands 2 played okay on 1080p with lowered settings, but it definitely did not have the same smoothness as on my desktop. Lowering resolution to 1600x900 helped a lot. I will probably play most games on 1366x768 anyway, so it's not a big deal. When I first got the laptop, I would get some cursor stutter after a period of idle activity. Not sure what causes it, but it seems to have gone away for now.Overall, excellent laptop for the price. Feels solid, performance is great, MATTE! screen is leagues ahead of most other laptops. Speakers are average, but expecting great audio out of a laptop is rather silly anyway. It is a somewhat portable laptop which you can lug around if you wish, though the battery life means you won't be going all day without a power jack.

After quite a bit of research I bought the N56VZ-DS71 15.6" laptop. I am a consulting engineer and this computer replaces a four-year-old one. Nearly everything is fine about this unit - fast and quiet with a bright, full HD screen and a nice, backlit keyboard. My only two complaints - a little too much bloatware from Asus (mostly easy to remove, though) and a wider chassis and display than my previous laptop. As others have mentioned, 16:9 may be great for movies, but it isn't particularly helpful for productivity. B&H Photo made the whole process easy; they were familiar with the product and shipping was fast and painless.

1. The major problem I have is inability to type in browser search or login window.
It happens with IE 64 bits.
The only solution is to reboot laptop.
2. Letter "V" of keyboard is malfunctioning and requires to be pressed few times to be typed.
I would not recommend this laptop.

I bought this laptop after my old one of 5 years decided to go out on me a couple weeks ago. I use it mainly for school, working with Microsoft Office and mostly running reports online. I have to say that I wasn't expecting much out of the computer but it has blown me away with how fast it is. It runs all my applications (usually running 6 or more programs at once) smoothly without any glitches or erros. With work and school, I am up at all hours of the night trying to work on assignments. I fell in love with the backlit keyboard the first night. I haven't had any issues with this computer so far and would highly recommend it if you are in the market for a new one.

The most stand-out features of this laptop are as such:* This laptop runs incredibly quietly and coolly for its power output. Amazingly designed heat dispersion aids in this and the fan is generally silent. The arm rest areas never get warm.* The laptop has some great design ideas in place; the cooling system, a well designed touchpad, the well-designed keyboard and the viewing angles of the screen are some of these.* The laptop's battery life performs well for its class (up to 5hours with speakers off and wifi on)

I've had this for about 2 months now. There were some very frustrating hiccups along the way, but now it's running perfectly. In the beginning, the wifi kept cutting out. I read a review that fixed that problem. Second, windows kept freezing. At first I thought it was chrome, which I stopped using, but then it happened at least twice a day using firefox. I updated some drivers, then an Asus live update came that appeared to take care of the rest. No issues now. What you'll like, the specs. Simply amazing. Fast, powerful, 1080p screen. You'll also like the design, which rivals just about anything else. Lastly, the speakers. Freakin' ridiculously good. What you won't like, the battery life. The most you'll get is 4 hours. With the Samsung Series 9 topping a reported 7 hours of use, that can be frustrating. Will you regret this purchase? Unless you get something that slipped through the quality assurance cracks, no. This is a fantastic example of power packed in a beautiful design.

This laptop would be the perfect laptop except for the fact that the trackpad is too large and the edges of my palms touch the edges of them, causing the mouse to constantly twitch while I type. Secondly the area were my wrists rest becomes uncomfortably warm and causes them to sweat. Other than that, this computer is amazingly fast, responsive, amazing sound quality with the subwoofer and great screen(antiglare(like matte)).

Comments about ASUS N56VZ-DS71 15.6" Notebook Computer (Black):
I received mine last Wednesday, along with a Seagate Momentus XT 750 GB 7200 RPM + 32 GB flash hybrid drive, also purchased from B&H. I cloned the hard drive using an inexpensive USB 3.0 enclosure and Seagate's Disk Wizard software (Acronis software with Seagate's name on it), then moved the 750 GB 5400 RPM Hitachi drive that came in the N56VZ to the enclosure to use for file transfer and backup. I've loaded Office 2010, Lightroom 4.1 and DXO Optics Pro 7.5 on the Momentus XT. Windows 7 Home Premium boots to the login prompt in under 20 seconds. DXO Optics Pro loads in about the same time; it was taking over a minute on my Dell Inspiron 6400 with a Core 2 Duo and 5400 RPM hard drive. I can't wait to see how fast DXO Optics Pro processes photos on the N56VZ--the Inspiron was taking as much as 90 seconds and could only do two at a time; the N56VZ should be able to do eight at a time. The screen on the N56VZ looks even better than my Viewsonic IPS display. I calibrated the display colors with my humble little calibration tool (that'll probably be my next B&H purchase) and it didn't change much--maybe the reds went down a bit. The only negative I have on the N56VZ is the poor design of the touchpad: the buttons are hidden under the bottom side of the pad, and are hard to press, and it's hard to keep from involuntarily brushing the touchpad while typing and moving the cursor to another field in a form. I'll solve that by disabling the touchpad and using a USB mouse, although that seems like a terrible waste of a USB 3.0 port--maybe I should look for a Bluetooth mouse. The chiclet keyboard is pretty nice, so far no keys have been too hard or too easy to get a character out of, unlike the Dell. The audio is pretty nice, but not quite as good as my Infinity Kappa 7s :-). The monitor software works better than the Dell's does for setting up an external display--at least the N56VZ remembers which side of the laptop the external monitor is on, something I could never train the Dell to do. The N56VZ gets a little warm after a while, which is most noticeable on the right side nearest me, above the hard drive. The fan has only spooled up to an audible level a couple of times--once after I moved about 250 GB of photos, music, and docs over from the Dell, did some software maintenance and file cleanup, and then defragged the hard drive. I haven't started removing bloatware yet, but there doesn't seem to be an objectionable amount of that, at least from my perspective.
