I bought the Nikon D3200 as a replacement for my old trusted D80 and D40x combo. I also decided to downsize my lens collection to just two lens (for now) with the kit 18-55mm lens and the 55-300mm package lens for portability purposes. I have shot stills extensively for years now and I plan on do so on a ongoing basis but I am interested in doing motion work as well.

I notice that autofocus for still images is snappy in all sorts of lighting conditions (as long as there is some illumination, it can lock onto the subject). I used it extensively in a dark reptile conservatory at South of the Border and managed to capture quite a few good shots of the reptiles in their dark tanks.

As suggested on many DSLR filmography sites, I rely on manual focus for any video capture since autofocus hunts and creates a lot of audible noise. I tend to pre-focus on my subject and maintain a consistent distance from my subject.

As far as ISO noise goes, at 100% magnification, sure you are going to notice a lot of noise at higher ISO levels but once images are downsized, it is reduced drastically. Thankfully I have to do that for many of my images thanks to the 24 megapixels. In short, do not worry about any noise issues.

All in all, I definitely recommend this camera. The only things that I really miss compared to my D80 are the ability to autofocus with older lens, the Nikon CLS flash commander mode, and bracketing.

I bought one of these cameras in September with the new Nikkor 18-300 lens. I took about 300 shots in all light conditions, and had NO keepers. Most shots had little or no depth of field, even in bright sun. They were progressively focussed from the foreground to the subject, and progressively de-focussed from the subject to the background, but the subject was not in focus. None of the pictures looked sharp. The 18-300 lens vignetted and cast a large flash shadow at wide angle. While zooming-in in Photoshop, the pictures got really fuzzy way before pixelizing. The camera might as well have an 18 MP sensor. Thinking there must be something wrong with the camera and lens, I returned both. After a month, I bought the standard body and lens kit from B&H, along with the highly touted new Sigma 18-250 macro lens. Unfortunately, I got the same problems, and returned everything again. Now, before you say "operator error" let me tell you I've been taking pictures for 45 years, I bought my first medium format camera in 1985, and I have used 8 digital cameras since 2001. Everybody has marvelled at my pictures. I bought the D3200 thiking it was finally a high MP camera at a reasonable price from a reputable manufacturer so I could start making sharp 24" x 36" prints. Well, I was stumped at just trying to get good pictures out of it. I did side-by-side comparisons with my Sony Cyber-shot 16MP DSC-HX9V, and the Sony won. I also agree with dpreview that the extra MP's are probably not useful unless you use the fast Nikkor lenses that costs $2,000-12,000. Unfortunately this will probably be true for the new D5200 as well. Having had these experiences, and consider all the problems people are having with other new Nikon cameras, such as the D800 and D600, I think maybe Nikon is having a serious quality problem. I'm still searching for a reasonably priced camera with a long telephoto capability, and with a large sensor, that's easy to carry around. Maybe this is not "possible", but I think the manufacturers could do better than what they have now. Sony seems to recognize this nitch with the introduction of the RX1 and RX100, but they still don't have one with a long zoom.

Comments about D3200 Digital SLR Camera With AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-55mm 1:3.5-5.6G VR Lens (Red):

I do mostly portraits and children and occasional wildlife.

The camera exceeded my expectations. Infinitely better than my Iphone and point &shoot camera.
It is simple to use and is first camera since my film days and has exceeded my expectations.

It may be considered entry level Nikon but it is superb. It has superior sharpness. Prints to 13X19 are great.5x7 etc are as sharp as you can get.

It is simple to use. Instructions are adequate. You can put it on auto pilot or futz around with it like an old photographer. The odds are it is a better camera than you are a photographer.
Easy to access controls, simple commands and light. It is plastic and not water proof but it is a fine buy at its price.
I put a glass cover on view as the only modification. I have done about 1200 shots and am very happy with results.

My only disappointment is that it has no automatic exposure bracketing command. The 18-55 zoom is good. I have added a couple of other lens and made a mistake of getting 200 zoom and not the 300.

I have not used video so no comment.

Overall I would recommend to friend and I would buy again.

I use this for both photos and videos as I am a media specialist for a day camp through the summer. The quality of the video is unmatched compared to the cameras provided. Great coloring and vibration reduction. Great quality overall.
Picture quality is incomparable in its price range. It even can compete with the higher end cameras with its 24.2mp capabilities. Great quality overall.
Only con I have of the overall product is the neck strap could have been thicker so I will be purchasing a new neck strap as I shoot 9 hours of the day estimated 800 shots and 3-4 mins of video.
I would recommend this to anybody as Nikon has respectable quality. Used a D3100 that had been dropped, slimed over, and even splashed with water, and it still provided great quality; I expect the D3200 to do the same.

Can't think of anything bad about this camera except the strap, wish it was more secureto the body...
Huge upgrade over my Nikon L110 ( Both Red )d3200 has much more detail over the l110.
I use my d3200 at car shows and capturing import models posing next to best cars....

This is not my first DSLR, but it is the best one I have owned. I am amazed at the quality of the product & the outstanding clarity of the photos.
I just received the camera about 10 days ago & I am getting used to the finer points of it's operations & I am amazed at what I will be able to do once I learn.

I purchased this camera after a recommendation from a friend as a first step into photography and I am in love. This camera is very easy to use but takes really great pictures. It was easy to figure out all the bells and whistles right out of the box. The LCD monitor is large and easy to read. Great quality for the price.

She knows Canon and Nikon gear thanks to my jobs and picked the D3200 for the ease of use and video quality. Like I said, great starter camera and room to advance your photography.
