The AF-S NIKKOR 28mm f/1.8G Lens from Nikon delivers on all the qualities Nikon is known for: superb image quality, up-to-the-minute features, and relentless attention to detail. This is a very fast 28mm wide-angle lens for full-frame (FX) and APS-C (DX) Nikon cameras. The f/1.8 maximum aperture enables very effective low-light imaging and shallow depth of field focus control.

Superior image quality and clarity is provided by the lens' Nano Crystal Coating which reduces ghosting and interior flare and the Super Integrated Coating which enhances light transmission and color consistency. Two aspherical lens elements minimize coma and other lens aberrations. Nikon's Silent Wave Motor (SWM) delivers fast, accurate, and quiet autofocus which is especially important when shooting video and its Rear Focusing system ensures that the front element won't rotate during focus. Full-time manual focus override allows for precise manual focusing even in autofocus mode. This lens will focus to an impressively close 9.8" and its 7 rounded diaphragm blades lend a beautiful quality to the out-of-focus portions of your images.

This is a "G" series lens, which means that there is no physical aperture ring -- the aperture must be controlled by the camera. When used on a DX-format camera, the lens provides the equivalent focal length of a 42mm lens in the 35mm format.

Fast f/1.8 Prime NIKKOR Lens
Fast maximum aperture is ideal for shooting stills or recording HD video in low-light situations as well as for travel, landscapes and general photography. The wide maximum aperture also allows shallow depth of field focus control.
Engineered for Nikon FX-format DSLRs
This lens is optimized for use with Nikon FX-format DSLRs, providing sharp and high contrast images and HD video from infinity to close up. Provides 42mm focal length equivalent when mounted on DX-format DSLRs.
Aspherical Lens Elements
Minimizes coma and other types of lens aberrations, further improving image integrity.
Nano Crystal Coat
Use of Nano Crystal Coat reduces ghosting and interior flare across a wide range of wavelengths for even greater image clarity.
Super Integrated Coating (SIC)
Enhances light transmission efficiency and offers superior color consistency and reduced flare.
Nikon Silent Wave Motor (SWM)
Enables fast, accurate, and quiet autofocus.
Rear Focus
The rear element moves during AF operation for fast, smooth performance which also eliminates front barrel rotation and lens extension when focusing.
Rounded 7-Blade Diaphragm
Renders more natural appearance of out-of-focus image elements.
M/A Focus Mode Switch
Enables quick changes between manual and autofocus operation and seamless override of the AF system for precise manual focus when needed.
Minimum Focus Distance
Focuses to 9.8" (25 cm) for creative perspectives and versatility.

...before you pass judgement on this lens...I imagine some will start blasting away right off the bat at f/1.8, and then pronounce the lens is "soft", or, they received a "bad copy" (I love that one). The fact is, f/1.8 has a RAZOR THIN d.o.f., and can trick some into misconstruing what's happening with the lens. I DID find I had to fine-tune the focus a tad (+3) on "my copy"...

SO, with all that out of the way, the lens is exactly what I needed...a replacement for my 35mm f/2D, which I was never happy with...too much c.a. wide open (and even stopped down a few).
This 28mm f/1.8 does just fine on my D300.
Why four stars instead of five? The price...that skinny brass ring they put on the end of the lens barrel must be REALLY expensive...

This is a great lens but it is very important to understand that it has a VERY bad issue with focus shifting at apertures between f/4-5.6. I typically use my 24-70 but ended up dropping it and had to switch to the 28mm. This was the first time I used this lens at apertures of 4-5.6 and it performed very poorly. Before purchasing this lens, I would highly recommend looking into the issue of focus shifting with this lens.
Unfortunately, I learned this the hard way - when I went to review the group images of a wedding I shot... all of the images were out of focus and this NEVER happens with my 24-70.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 28mm f/1.8G Lens:

I use it for landscape and people and sports. I love that it's SO light weight... amazing. And it looks sharp corner to corner, which to be honest I was surprised at. On the down side, there is a bit of play in the focus ring which is a minor annoyance. It would be nice if this were a ED lens, but oh well.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 28mm f/1.8G Lens:

I decided to purchase the 28mm lens specifically for landscape photography. I am quite surprised at how well this lens captures the image. Depending on what lighting condition I am shooting in (low light, natural light, etc) there is a slight vignette around the edges of the image. This has only happened in low light situations. If the vignette is very cumbersome, it doesn't take much with Lightroom to correct the problem. The deciding factor (aside from the reviews) was the example images from this lens. I watched many videos on YouTube comparing this lens to others that were similar. Honestly, for the price you can't beat it. The images that this lens produces are fantastic!

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 28mm f/1.8G Lens:

When shooting film with a Nikon F3HP, the 28/2.8 was one of my 2 most used lenses. When I went to DSLRs, I bought into DX and used 16-85 and 10-24 Zooms with happy success. When I bought a D810, I decided to return to primes with the 28/1.8G and 20/1.8G lenses to take advantage of the high resolution the sensor provides.

I haven't done extensive testing, but the autofocus is fast and accurate, I see a very high level of detail from edge to edge and at f1.8 the finder is bright.

The lens feels perfect and is sufficiently unobtrusive to make a good street shooting option on the D810. I find that I'd rather pay attention to framing and focusing than zooming.

An added advantage is that it uses the same 67mm filters as the 85/1.8G and the 70-200/4.

I just started using this lens over the weekend. It's really sharp and the autofocus is nice and fast. The bokeh is beautiful too. I'm only giving it 4 stars because for this amount of money, I would expect it to feel more sturdy. Build quality feels very cheap.

I picked up this lens just before heading out on vacation to Oregon and Washington. On my D610, this lens is great. Fast focus, nice color, sharp images, nothing to dislike. This lens is great for landscape and nature shots as well as tight quarter shooting. Plastic mostly, but the trade off is light weight. Not as spectacular as my 85mm f/1.8G, but still very good.

I would have liked the 1.4 24mm, but could not afford it. This 28 looks good so far. I live near the water, so the polarizing filter is essential. The reviews on this lens are very good, the test shots I have taken so far are good, and the lens itself feels substantial and smooth, so I am prepared for the best.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 28mm f/1.8G Lens:

The first thing you notice about this lens is that it is very light, it does not feel very substantial. It is close in size to the Nikon 16-85mm DX zoom, but weighs 155 grams (5.4 oz) less. The 28mm focal length is equivalent to the focal length used by cell phones and people who are used to selfies taken with a phone like the 28mm perspective. It takes surprisingly good portraits though you have to get very close to frame them. This is also a very competent landscape lens with low distortion and great depth of field. This lens can produce great results, but for the price I expected better build quality. My one real issue is there is too much play in the focus ring, you can achieve sharp focus but you have to work at it. Lenses are an investment, I hope this lens will prove to be as durable as it is sharp.

They say don't pay any attention to the gold band. They say that there is no comparison with the 35mm f/1.8. I'm using a D5100, I've shot a many shots with the 35mm f/1.8 and I really love this lens. It does everything for me that I've needed, but I just wasn't satisfied with my products/photos. So I decided to invest in myself by purchasing a better lens with nano crystal and a wider lens. This was a great decision. I'm going to make good money with this lens/I'm going to produce great photos with this lens. It is absolutely incredible. At f/1.8 fantastic bokeh, at f/9 fantastic crop. There's nothing else you'll need. Buy the lens, it's worth the extra bucks to take you to the next level of your photography.B&H did they're job and provided a great product and at a great price.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 28mm f/1.8G Lens:

I havent used this lens too much, but so far it is amazing. In my eyes it appears very sharp wide open and produces some beautiful photos. I have so far used the lens to shoot low light situations which my intentions for this lens originally was and still is. I shot a friend's concert with this lens and the images turned out really good. I love the fact that it is super light, although sometimes that makes it feel as if it is not as durable as my other lenses. I definitely think this will be a lens I keep on my camera not only during low light photography, but most of the time.

Used for landscapes and general walkaround scenics.

Focus is faster than I can compose shots.

Feels like plastic but performs like all metal.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 28mm f/1.8G Lens:

This lens is tack sharp even wide open, which combined with its wide angle, makes it a perfect lens for indoor photography where flash photography is not allowed, especially in churches. I felt the 28mm was a good option for the range I wanted to shoot, and wow am I impressed!

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 28mm f/1.8G Lens:

I used this new lens for the first time in Yosemite last week. Got some really nice shots, although some were soft, my fault I'm sure. I bought it originally to shoot the failed Camelopardalid meteor shower using my D800, and it did very nicely almost wide open at f/2. A little bit of astigmatism in the far corners, but otherwise quite sharp. While not a cheap lens, it's still far less expensive than the f/1.4s and I can afford to give up 2/3 stop and save $$$. Overall, quite happy with this purchase.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 28mm f/1.8G Lens:

I have seen a lot of remarks on the soft focus for this lens. Wide aperture exposures with this type of prime really need the use of the center focal point.I know its not fun to re-compose but this lens does very well under those conditions. I have the same issue with my 50mm 1.4 on my D800. This is not the D800 edge focus issue BTW.
