I purchased this camera from B&H about 2 weeks ago now. Before this I owned the Canon XA10. Obviously the HM600 is in a different league, and I'm loving it (for the most part). Here's a quick summary of my thoughts:General fee:- The camera is a lot lighter than I expected. It's very well balanced and easy to handhold. The buttons are all on the same side, and logically placed. Most buttons are able to be custom assigned in the menu.- Image quality is very good. However low light isn't quite as good as I expected. Anything above 6dB gain is unusable in terms of noise. The LOLUX mode is ridiculous - just a noisy mess. I wouldn't bother with it. Although it does light up very dim environments.- Another reviewer here said that there isn't a -6dB mode. This is not correct, there IS a -6dB mode which can be assigned to the gain switch or selected from the menu. Build quality:- Excellent for the most part, the camera feels solid and well-built. However:-- SD Card door feels weak and flimsy.-- When I pull out the LCD screen, it feels weak and cheap, and it creaks when moved.-- The plastic near the handhold strap creaks when held. It feels hollow and cheap.Rings:- Focus ring is rubberised plastic and it's HUGE, so it's really easy to find and use without looking.- Zoom ring is servo driven. It's quite responsive, there doesn't seem to be any lag unless you pull it really fast, then the lens has to catch up. Otherwise it's really nice to use.- Iris ring is thin and small, but it's a different kind of plastic than the other two rings so it's easy to find without looking Auto focus:- Most of the time it seems to be fast and accurate, but occasionally it takes a a few seconds to start auto focusing. A couple of times I've noticed it even hunts back and forth to find an accurate focus, making the footage unusable However in general it seems to be quite good.Image stabilisation:- Not really impressed. The stabilisation on my XA10 is far better. The default setting on the HM600 is "normal" but you can go into the menu and set it to "high" which I think may introduce some form of digital stabilisation. It doesn't seem to make a huge difference. I can't find a way to assign normal/high to a button so it can be annoying to have to go into the menu to do it.LCD screen:- Resolution is good, it's reasonably crisp and sharp with great colour. Easy to focus on, but very reflective in the light. - The EVF is extremely good, it's huge and really sharp which makes it easy to focus on. Unfortunately the colours aren't great, they look quite dull and washed out.Other stuff:- Zoom lever is massive and really nice to use- 3 record buttons, very ergonomically placed - Fan noise can be heard on the internal mic in quiet environments - I'm having trouble getting the .mp4 and .mov media into Avid MC 6.5, others may encounter issues- I had to update the firmware as 25p mode was coming out interlaced. No further issues after the update, it's a simple process and takes about 10 minutes.

This is a very good camera for run and gun journalism, it has an amazing zoom and all the necessary features to work well and deliver professional work. The white balance is sometimes tricky to manage and the colors of the LCD screen are not that reliable, usually the quality of the footage is better assessed once the footage is downloaded. The focus assistant feature also doesn't work that well, the red (or yellow or white line) isn't that visible.

Comments about JVC GY-HM600 ProHD Camera:

I bought two of these for event and studio shoots after reading reviews from B&H. I seriously searched for a week trying to find someone who bad mouthed this camera. After buying I realized why no one said anything bad. I love both of them and could give you millions of things I loved, but here is my very critical honest review for people who have deep concerns of any draw backs on this camera. First even better news about this camera. There is a firmware update that makes this camera contend with $ and $ cameras. It allows you to now record in 50mbps in various formats including 30p and 60p. Great in low light, but you have to adjust manually. I have noticed in locations that when it starts to get dark the auto low light bumps up gain and there is a bit of grain. It is all still good useable footage, but after manually adjusting, you can achieve a very crisp picture in lowlight. Auto focus issues. This may be the worst part of this camera, and it is not that bad, it's just noticeable. If you are trying to zoom in very fast the auto focus takes a full second to catch up. For professionals, this won't be a problem as most people I know manually focus, but if shooting a wedding or speech I would be careful of a fast zoom during an important kiss or speech. Sound: I honestly do not use sound from this as I use a Zoom H4N. In an event I would make sure to throw sound on auto. It does give decent quality, but nothing crazy. (If you need a camera with auto sound that will blow you away check out the Sony VG-NEX series.) Easy learning curve once out of full auto: There are so many buttons on this thing, that if you want to adjust something, there is likely to be a button for it. Reading the manual can help with adjusting shutter speed or how to manually set white balance. The one main issue is the menu system. It takes a bit getting use to, and the first few times using this camera you may get lost changing frame rates or video settings, so I recommend spending an hour or two mastering where everything is before going on a live shoot. Hopefully if you are hesitant in making this your purchase like I was this has answered your main fears. This camera is amazing and for the price you will not be disappointed. If my review isn't long enough, here are some recommendations on how to get the best performance out of it.If your wanting the best HD, Make sure you buy SD cards with a write speed of 50 mbps or higher. They are more expensive, but if you are picky, then I would invest before you start shooting.Buy an extra battery and invest in the dual battery charger if you are shooting live events. It will cost you a lot of money for another battery and the dual charger, but it will save you if you are working unexpectedly overtime.

I use the camera to shoot a web series. I love the picture quality and battery life. I think this is a great camera for the price. I don't like that the camera can go out of focus in low light when it is trying to refocus but overall this is a great camera. You can't get all you want in a camera but this camera comes really close.

I took a chance in buying this camera. It was between the Sony NX cam and the JVC. I was surprised at the picture quality they where very sharp and crisp with ultra high resolution. Camera is extremely easy to operate. I particularly like the capabilities to changing format of the recording media AVCHD, QuickTime Movies files or MPEG 4. The cameral is only been out approximately one year in the states so I am going see if there is going be any issues from anyone else in the near future if they encounter any problems before I buy another one. The only issue I seen so far is that it does not come with a shoulder strap if you need one you are going to have to buy it separately.

No camera has all the features we could want , however , this model comes close. The JVC GY HM600 works great at the Full Auto setting and on Manual it eliminates any focus hunting. My first shoot included difficult lighting sources and the focus/ exposure/ white balance was very good. On Auto the Assist Focus works great while recording! The build quality is very good.I handle my camera like a newborn baby so any item that seems a bit weak should not give me any trouble. The EVF is a pleasure to work with. Out of the box this camera satisfied me.

Small package with big detail. Can mount on tripod or use as mobile camcorder to follow action. Battery life is good and it gives tons of recording time when using 2- 32GB SD cards. You can use bigger ones as well. Downloads direct into Final Cut Pro but the files seem large. 30 minutes of recording can equal 30-40GB files.

Comments about JVC GY-HM600 ProHD Camera:

I like the variety of recording formats, and zoom on the lens is really nice. The picture is very nice, although it isn't RAW, but then at this price point you can't really expect that.
The zoom/focus/iris rings on the lens to not actually control the lens in any way. They are simply controllers that can be enabled or disabled with the buttons on the side. I found this to be somewhat annoying, but it's not a big deal. I just can't zoom in as fast as I'd like for certain shots. Viewfinder is good, and I like having metering for audio right on the camera.
Most of the controls are laid out nicely enough so that it took me just a portion of an afternoon, and I had it figured out. Even without reading the manual.
All in all a very nice camera. I use it as my main camera, and would buy a second one if I had the money.

I use the JVC HM600 to live stream Church services as well as make DVD copies for cable tv distribution
This camera has an abundance of features that make this process very easy and efficient. We use a Livestream Broadcaster to upload the video directly from the camera's HDMI output. Having the HD-SDI as an additional output source gives us a very versatile means of connecting to any professional monitor or device.
The ability to record in Quicktime .MOV files or AVCHD give the option to choose whichever format works best for your workflow. Quicktime allows for near instant ingestion into FCP for editing and DVD duplication
The images produced are very crisp and true to color, even in fairly low light level situations.
Audio inputs are good, if not great. The level controls for Line are somewhat limited. This has been the only drawback so far.
Overall This is a very good camera with a nice form factor that produces a quality picture

The basic lense that the camera comes with lacks a little but besides that this is an excellent camera that is crisp, portable and user friendly. I would definitely recomend, however, with an additional wider lense.

Comments about JVC GY-HM600 ProHD Camera:

I bought 4 of these cameras for use in a studio setting, for live events and in ENG news gathering. So far they have done extremely well in all three situations. The 23x lens works extremely well for live events, making it easy to capture video from far away. It works just as well zoomed out, with a beautiful wide angle. The sensor and lens have also made it easier to achieve some nice rack focus shots than our previous cameras (Sony Z5Us). My one complaint for the cameras so far has been their underperformance in low light situations. Even in situations where other cameras could get by without adding too much gain, these occasionally struggle. However, they have done extremely well otherwise and I would definitely recommend them for the price.

I use this camera mainly for independent films but also for events. The image quality is terrific and the fully manual controls on the body make for easy use. They are very sensitive and I am still learning how to make adjustments without going too far. I especially like that I can save files in MOV format so that I don't have to deal with AVCHD. It is a bit heavy so I never use it off a tripod but it is supposed to have good image stabilization.

Comments about JVC GY-HM600 ProHD Camera:

Comments about JVC GY-HM600 ProHD Camera:

Have used this camera on two shoots so far. Has some great options including the ability to record two formats on two SD cards at once, say XD-CAM MP4 on one and FC-Pro MOV files on the other. Perfect when the producer doesn't knot they need. Records in native 1080P. Has a super wide angle lens and a 23X zoom which covers most situations. Although I'm not a big fan of image stabilizers, I have to say the stabilizer on the lens is EXCELLENT - there are three settings OFF - Level 1 - Level 2. Also happy with the IDX batteries that come standard - seems about 2 or 3 hours per battery. The camera is relatively light, but well balanced and the buttons are all in the right place, easy to access and use. The zoom control is smooth and the variable operation from super slow to super fast is excellent. Seems to be great in low light - but have not fully tested. The viewfinder screen is great - looks like it is actually a HD monitor, so super sharp. The bad stuff: BAD 1: The camera does NOT come with a battery charger - you need to purchase from B&H at $. BAD 2: There is full manual operation of all functions, but I found that the manual (non-servo) use of the zoom is not real, it seems to still use the servo, so crash zoom is impossible to do.BAD 3: The manual says that the DB gain can be set to -6. This is not the case, the lowest setting is 0db gain. I contacted JVC support - still waiting on a response after 10 days.

Comments about JVC GY-HM600 ProHD Camera:

I received this camera on December 11. After charging, I tried many shots in the family room after dark. I was amazed by the low light performance and dynamic range. I have been using a Canon Vixia G10. The G10 takes wonderfull video. I expected to have to compare these two cameras over several days of shooting to find a meaningfull difference, but in this case, the the JVC GY-HM600 was clearly better in dim room lighting. The next day in bright daylight the difference was not so apparent. I had to shoot for several days to find evidence of impovement over the G10. Overall, the JVC footage is better. I then installed the firmware update. Now the low light performance has gone from great to awesome. I like to make Travel videos. I edit on Corel Video studio 14 and burn Blu-rays. The JVC will be more difficult to carry around and it will draw more attention than a small camera. So far, I love it.
