The Synology DiskStation DS412+ 4-Bay All-In-1 NAS Server For SMB Users is specially engineered for small- to medium-sized businesses requiring a high-performance, easily-managed and full-featured NAS (Network Attached Storage) solution. The DiskStation centralizes data backups, safeguards vital assets and shares files across various platforms.

The DS412+ enables fast transfer speeds of approximately 205MB/s read and 183MB/s write when using a RAID 5 configuration in a Windows-based environment, with link aggregation enabled. It's equipped with 2 LAN with failover and link aggregation support, which, combined with a convenient hot-swappable hard drive design, ensures continual service uptime in the event that the drives require replacement or LAN fails unexpectedly. The DiskStation features blazing-fast USB 3.0 connectivity, offering transmission speeds of up to 5Gbps.

CPU Passive Cooling Technology and System Fan Redundancy work to prevent overheating, in order to keep the DS412+ running optimally. This also allows the system to avoid reliance on a dedicated processor cooling fan and mitigate critical points of failure. When the system detects fan failures, the integrated redundancy mechanism spins up the functional fan, giving proper ventilation to the system, while supporting continued operations until your replacement fan is in position. Thus, system damage is minimized, while availability is maximized.

Synology's Hybrid RAID (SHR) automatically constructs an optimal RAID volume with data protection based on the hard drives installed, so you need not have hard drives of identical size. The SHR still provides a manual setup option for advanced users. Multiple Volumes on RAID enables you to generate numerous volumes on a RAID structure, giving you a versatile and efficient way to manage your storage across all available drives. Should the need arise to expand your volumes, just allocate additional storage space on the UI and DSM will take care of the rest for you--without any service disruption.

The system runs on Synology DiskStation Manager (DSM), delivering comprehensive applications and features targeted at office and business workgroups. Web Station with PHP / MySQL support permits one Synology DS412+ to host as many as 30 websites, as well as multiple 3rd party web applications, including Content Management, Customer Relationship Management and e-Commerce systems.

The integrated mail server transforms Synology DS412+ into a dedicated mail service provider, while the add-on package, Mail Station 2, offers a webmail interface for users to access emails stored on Synology DS412+. Synology Surveillance Station provides a centralized interface from which to control IP cameras deployed in your office or home, giving you the freedom to travel miles away and still watch live views, record events, and capture snapshots with a computer or mobile device.

A slew of add-on packages enables the Synology DS412+ to replace multiple pieces of network hardware. The VPN Server provides a simple VPN solution that turns your Synology DS412+ into a VPN server, giving you a safe way to connect to a private LAN at a remote site. Directory Server lets Synology DS412+ host LDAP service with centralized access control, authentication, and account management, further boosting your office management efficiency.

Enjoy Windows ADS and ACL support. ADS integration permits Synology DS412+ to quickly and easily fit in an existing business network environment without requiring a recreation of users' accounts on the Synology DS412+. The User Home feature reduces the amount of effort required for administrators to create a private shared folder for a large number of users. ACL support offers much finer-grained access control and efficient privilege settings, enabling IT staff to set up privileges to files and folders on DS412+ via their familiar Windows user interface. The privileges will be applied to all access entries, including AFP, FTP, File Station, NFS and WebDAV. The secure privilege gives IT staff peace of mind, eliminating worry about loopholes.

Additionally, the iSCSI support in DiskStation Manager (DSM) allows the DS412+ to offer seamless storage solutions for virtualization servers, including VMware, Citrix, and Microsoft Hyper-V. This is a perfect alternative to a SAN business solution. Not only efficient but also affordable, the iSCSI enables SMB users to consolidate storage into data center arrays while giving hosts the appearance of locally-attached disks.

Designed to make efficient use of resources, the DS412+ boasts a low operating power consumption of a mere 44W. Offering dual 3.62 x 3.62" (92 x 92mm) fans, plus smart airflow to keep the system running cool all the time. In addition, the noise-dampening design makes the device whisper-quiet compared to PC counterparts. As if this weren't enough, the DS412+ also supports Wake on LAN / WAN, multiple scheduled power on / off and hard drive hibernation to further minimize power consumption and operation costs. Like all Synology products, this NAS server is produced with RoHS compliant parts, reflecting Synology's commitment to the preservation and protection of the environment.

Note! Read and write speeds may vary in different environments

High-Performance Data Throughput

DS412+ enables fast transfer speeds of approximately 205MB/s read and 183MB/s write when using a RAID 5 configuration in a Windows-based environment, with link aggregation enabled. It's equipped with 2 LAN with failover and link aggregation support, which, combined with a convenient hot-swappable hard drive design, ensures continual service uptime in the event that the drives require replacement or LAN fails unexpectedly. The DiskStation features blazing-fast USB 3.0 connectivity, offering transmission speeds of up to 5Gbps

Dependable and Reliable

CPU Passive Cooling Technology and System Fan Redundancy work to prevent overheating, in order to keep the DS412+ running optimally. This also allows the system to avoid reliance on a dedicated processor cooling fan and mitigate critical points of failure. When the system detects fan failures, the integrated redundancy mechanism spins up the functional fan, giving proper ventilation to the system, while supporting continued operations until your replacement fan is in position. Thus, system damage is minimized, while availability is maximized.

Flexible Storage Management

Synology's Hybrid RAID (SHR) automatically constructs an optimal RAID volume with data protection based on the hard drives installed, so you need not have hard drives of identical size. SHR divides each drive into smaller chunks, producing extra redundant storage--enabling use of the maximum capacity of each disk. The SHR still provides a manual setup option for advanced users. Multiple Volumes on RAID enables you to generate numerous volumes on a RAID structure, giving you a versatile and efficient way to manage your storage across all available drives. Should the need arise to expand your volumes, just allocate additional storage space on the UI and DSM will take care of the rest for you--without any service disruption
Another plus is that you need not wait for volume setup to be finished before storing data in the NAS server; start moving data into the DiskStation during the volume creation process
Depending upon your choice, SHR provides 1-2 hard disks fault-tolerance of data protection. Even if one of your hard disks fails to function properly, your data is still accessible and safe

Expectations of a small NAS have to be tempered by realization of the inherent limitations in this kind of storage. The link between the computer and the NAS is one; Gigabit Ethernet has a line speed (and thus absolute speed limit) of 125 MB/sec. No matter how fast the computer and the NAS, this bottleneck imposes a constraint that cannot be exceeded.

We compared the DS412+ to an older Seagate NAS440 in a simple test with compelling results. Both NAS devices had identical Seagate 3T enterprise-level drives, had the same quantity and type of existing data stored, and shared the same LAN segment that was kept free of all other traffic for the tests.

B&H advised us that the DS412+ uses hardware-implemented RAID; on one occasion, Seagate tech support claimed that their NAS uses hardware RAID, on another it was software RAID. This matters greatly, as software RAID imposes a major speed impediment, especially with the kind of modest CPU used in NAS devices. No Haswells here.

We ran a number of comparisons with the ATTO benchmark program. The important thing to remember is that these benchmarks yield phenomenally variable results and thus have value only when comparing different set-ups with the same parameters.

In short, the NAS440 proved that it's nearly an order of magnitude slower than the DS412+.

In other respects: the DS412+ has a prettier (but not necessarily better) UI; both are happier with PCs than they are with Macs (but then who isn't?); both are much quieter than their drives are; the NAS440 has a better drive caddy design; both claim to have link aggregation but don't bother explaining that this works to your advantage only with simultaneous multiple workstation access and has NO value for a single computer; both have backup software included (we did not make any comparison of these); and the DS412+ powers down the drives during prolonged inactivity.

The bottom line? The DS412+ is much costlier, and its higher performance makes that viable.

One minor gripe: Synology refuses to talk to you until you have a product serial number for the contact form on their website. This makes it impossible to enquire about product details before purchase. Normally, we would disqualify a manufacturer right then and there.

There are problems with the unit as it does not turn off as it should. I have contacted Synology but they will only send a refurbished unit. I will be contacting B&H to see if it can be returned for a replacement.

The unit has been in use for six days

This has left a very poor taste in my mouth.

I mainly used the product for storing my precious photos and videos. The nas works very quickly b/c its two ethernet ports. Also, I like the feature that it support RAID5 which is a combination of both data security and capacity. Overall it is a very great product excerpt for its a little bit higher price.

I bought this NAS server with the harddrive kit. Made research with different brands and Synology stood out for good reviews and at the same time offers more applications that is useful for my wedding photo and video business.

I use this mainly as extra storage and back up/Time Machine system for my iMac, Mac book Pro and couple of PCs... Yes it is capable of cross platforms!

Very easy and user friendly installation, does not need to be an expert to do it. If needed help, they have customer support that can assist you.

Not cheap but worth the investment specially if you have large files that you always work on.

I've only had my Synology DisckStation DS412+ NAS Server setup for a few days, but i love having a personal cloud. I'm running a 16TB Raid 5 which is suitable for my needs. I used it with Seagate 4TB NAS HDD. It was super easy to set up and implement. I am using it for a number of reasons. Time Machine backup for multiple macs, media server to house and stream vast photo, music, video & film collections. Will be accessing the server from tablets, macs, pcs, and a few books running ubuntu linux. the whole setup was more costly than a new macbook, but i hope it pays off. I have had so many other backup solutions repeatedly fail.

        Perfect Expandable Home Storage

        By cstout

        from Stockton, CA

Comments about Synology DiskStation DS412+ 4-Bay All-In-1 NAS Server For SMB Users:

With four bays this allowed me to build out network storage with my old smaller capacity desktop hard drives. After building out my first volume I started pushing all my data to it and set up network Time Machine for my iMac. I ordered a much larger capacity WD Red drive and expanded the volume with extreme ease. The expansion process took over 24 hours to complete but that's completely normal. I'm blown away at the snappiness of this box. It's not just storage sitting on your network...it's so extremely customizable. Currently, I have it set up for Plex, VPN, Time Machine, and rsync backup to another Synology NAS at a remote location for off-site backup. I had a FreeNAS box setup before this but I was extremely motivated to move to Synology due to two major factors. First being that I'm not a Linux administrator and FreeNAS is not the friendliest setup. Second is that I benefit greatly from a GUI. Synology's web interface is extremely fast, gorgeous (definitely upgrade to DSM 5), and feels just like I'm in a desktop operating system environment.

Overall, I'm completely satisfied with this purchase. It is accurately described by B&H and Synology. There's no smoke and mirrors. This is the real deal. On gigabit Ethernet I get incredible transfer rates, set up was effortless, VPN worked first try, backup to another NAS...so simple. Unreal. I'm hooked on Synology.

Comments about Synology DiskStation DS412+ 4-Bay All-In-1 NAS Server For SMB Users:

The reviews on this unit are great. The Product itself is actually pretty good, considered I am a person who had no idea about servers/networking.

The main thing that sold me about this product is the fact that you can store multiple drives in the unit, and incorporate the type of RAID system you would like to run while utilizing it.

A negative is the fact that since I have no idea about networking, I am still having some trouble utilizing it to its full potential (ie router, gigabet, switches, etc . . ) However, after doing a few searches online, there are numerous forums that help you get to where you need to be with this product.

            A1 man, A1.

It was easy to setup and the instructions for basic use are very easy to follow. You can get into more in depth setup and use if you want but for me SHR system provided the best operation.
I only gave it 4 stars because I've only been using it 2 weeks. I feel sure after I know more about it that rating will go up to 5 stars.

I had a Drobo FS that was incredibly slow and with software that was very basic. I moved the drives to the Synology, installed the software, and the system was operational within minutes. I have low skills with network-related matters, and much of the software has options that I don't understand. Yet, the small part I do understand is readily managed, and I now have three laptops (using Time Machine) completely backed up and automated. A very worthwhile purchase. And, this NAS on a wired network transfers data very quickly -- about 50GB/hr.

There are problems with the unit as it does not turn off as it should. I have contacted Synology but they will only send a refurbished unit. I will be contacting B&H to see if it can be returned for a replacement.

The unit has been in use for six days

This has left a very poor taste in my mouth.

Comments about Synology DiskStation DS412+ 4-Bay All-In-1 NAS Server For SMB Users:

I deployed this NAS with 4-2TB WDblack sata disks. Setup and configuration is easy. I'm an I.T. guy, but if you can read, you can get the NAS online with no problem.
Browsing, read, write performance is superb. On writes I can get anywhere from 80-160mb/s. I use the NAS for:
                      - My raw 22 megapixel images
                      - Family photos, documents, applications
                      - Backup all laptops and computers to this device
                      - Used as movie/music repository for my media server.

I can backup 180GB image in 35 minutes. The unit is also slick looking, looks great in my room of black and greys. Full 1080 movies streaming from this NAS are fluid with no stuttering. I've tested this on my Android phone, Nexus tablet, laptop and pc.

                      Also:
When I set it up, I only had 3 of the 4 drives I ordered, so I decided to set it up anyway. I confirmed the NAS to use Synology's SHR RAID, which promises to allow for dynamic addition of drives. Well, when I received the 4th drive days later, I simply inserted it in the slot, opened up the management tool and selected "add disk". The disk was added and the storage automatically accounted for the new space (minus RAID overhead of course). Awesome.

Negative - Do NOT use the Plex server app on this. It's terribly slow. Instead, use a laptop or other external computer, run your media server on that and a mapped drive to your media files on the NAS.

Comments about Synology DiskStation DS412+ 4-Bay All-In-1 NAS Server For SMB Users:

I have other single-disk NAS enclosures, however this is my first multi-disk, hot swap NAS/server. I hit a few snags during initial setup, mainly due to missed option settings, but otherwise have not had a single problem with the unit since purchase nearly 2 weeks ago.

Wanting to see how the NAS handled new drives, I first installed a single 2TB disk, uploaded about 250GB of data, then added a second 2TB disk. The unit took about 8 hours to format, initialize, back-up, and complete the parity check process on the second drive. I was able to use the unit continuously during the process, without experiencing performance lags. The duration may have been impacted by my testing of streaming audio and video capabilities during the process.

I also successfully tested uploading and downloading from IOS devices while on a business trip approximately 100 miles from home. The native apps (available from the iTunes App Store) worked flawlessly.

In response to reviews mentioning noise issues. I placed my ear within a few inches of the device while uploading files and did not hear the drives or fans using "quiet" fan mode. Perhaps people are recycling older drives?

Overall, I am very pleased with the unit and its cross-platform compatibility.

This is the easiest to setup of all the servers I have had. The software yhat it has is just what most small business or a home user could use.
I have been in the computer game for more than 30 years and if you need a small server than please concider this one.

I bought the enclosure in a bundle with four 2TB drives from Western Digital. Installation was so easy following the instruction. Also the initialization was not too complicated just the purpose of two functions is still a mystery for me (iSCSI LUN & iSCSI target). After initialized and installed some programs like photo station and audio it is so awesome accessing my data from anywhere I want. Whenever you think about getting some station like that just go ahead you won't regret it.
