Product Highlights
  • Variable 0.45-2.7 Density
  • Reduce Exposure by 1.5-9 Stops
  • Greater Control Over Exposure Settings
  • Low Profile, Rigid Aluminum Filter Ring
  • Optical Glass Construction

The Hoya 52mm Variable Density Filter is a solid variable density filter providing an exposure reduction of about 1.5 to 9 stops. The 0.45 to 2.7 density creates a darkening of the entire image, allowing you to photograph with a wider aperture or slower shutter speed than would normally be required. The degree of density is easily controlled by rotating the front filter ring, helping you to predetermine the additional exposure length required. By slowing your exposure time or increasing your aperture, you are able to control depth of field and convey movement more easily.

This filter is constructed from optical glass to maintain image clarity and is set within a slim profile aluminum ring, which helps to reduce the likelihood of vignetting when used on wide-angle lenses, and does not feature front threads.

Comments about Hoya 52mm Variable Density Filter:

I do a lot of outdoor photography (waterfalls, rivers, beach, and bright sunlight). Having the opportunity to adjust the amount of light aids in the creativity of the photographs. Having the variable density feature allows me to "experiment" without having to change filters.

Comments about Hoya 52mm Variable Density Filter:

It's nice to have one filter to carry in your bag if you're going light or don't have much room to carry multiple filters. The filter is built solidly, as I've come to expect from Hoya.

Comments about Hoya 52mm Variable Density Filter:

i use this filter out in the woods i like to shoot moving water, at a slow enough exposure to create the effects without washing out the frame from too much light, this filter works exactly like i expected, and it lets me create the images i was hoping for.....there is a warning that comes in the package that at the absolutely darkest setting there will be a cross pattern in the image, and sure enough there is....it was the only negative thing i could say, but they do warn you about it....it is the nature of the ND lens construction

Comments about Hoya 52mm Variable Density Filter:

ND filters are a big deal in photography and most people who take it seriously will tell you that you're looking at $300+ for a decent one. I've been using this for a couple weeks with a Canon 50mm f 1.4 (FD mount) and the Panasonic Leica 25mm f 1.4 (m 4/3 with a step up ring) and the colours have been fantastic and everything has been tack sharp. I should mentioned I'm shooting mostly video but all at very high bitrates and at 1080p. I would definitely buy this again and highly recommend it to anyone looking for a variable density filter at a reasonably price.
