An SSD drive is required but not included with this item. Please be sure to purchase a compatible SSD drive that suits your needs.
The Blackmagic Design HyperDeck Studio Pro is a file-based deck that records uncompressed in QuickTime and compressed in ProRes and DNxHD, storing the files onto two 2.5" SSDs. Two SSD slots are available and allow continuous recording--the second disk automatically begins recording when the first becomes full. The disks can afterwards be hooked up to a computer by USB.
A diverse set of connections consists of 3G SDI, component, HDMI, XLR, RCA, Thunderbolt, USB and RS422. SD, HD, and 2K formats are supported, and capacity is additionally available for 4K playback from an SSD in ProRes. Color options are SD and HD 10-bit 4:2:2 and 4:4:4. Recording in 4:2:2 uncompressed offers higher dynamic range and thus more precision in color correction. Alternatively, recording in compressed ProRes or DNxHD allows five times longer recording and all the same maintains 10-bit color and full frame 1920 x 1080 sampling.
The panel controls and overall functionality of the HyperDeck Studio Pro are very similar to those of traditional tape decks. The transport buttons are illuminated crystal; a jog/shuttle wheel is available; and an integrated LCD displays timecode and transport information, full color thumbnail previews of the clips being recorded or played back, and also format, frame rate, and audio levels.

Comments about Blackmagic Design HyperDeck Studio Pro:
Simple to setup and use. Some of the most amazing video quality I have seen. Images are rich and audio is full and not distorted.

Comments about Blackmagic Design HyperDeck Studio Pro:
Solid product, works well on 1080i. It will not I/O 1080 23.98PsF... Well it will ingest Psf material but will not output PsF, only 1080 24p. According to Black Magic they have had several requests for this to work but because HDMI does not do PsF, their box won't either. Seems simple to me. Disable the HDMI output and send the 1080 23.98PsF signal out the SDI output only. If they fix this I WILL buy again (returning unit).
Just some info... After calling AJA. I think the AJA Ki Pro Rack will I/O PsF (see manual page 52) BUT it does NOT I/O uncompressed. I can't use this either.

Comments about Blackmagic Design HyperDeck Studio Pro:
I own both the HyperDeck Studio and now the Pro version. I work on several projects where the sound is not embedded in the SDI signal so this deck is a must for me without more adapter boxes added. At this point with very limited functions working I would hold off on this purchases until BMD gets to it's claimed working functions.03/23/2013

Comments about Blackmagic Design HyperDeck Studio Pro:
First of all, this product is still hard to beat from a prices standpoint. However, out of the box it was advertised to have DNxHD codec and didn't. After a phone conversation with BlackMagic support they are still writing this and hope to release an update soon.Secondly, unlike every professional gear it doesn't natively take embedded audio over SDI. You need a separate convertor for this. While this isn't clearly spelled out it is assumed to have this feature as do all decks in it's class. Finally, the product is still a good product. Works great and solidly and the price is hard to beat. We would still recommend this product but additional information on Black Magic's website would also be helpful in the future.

Comments about Blackmagic Design HyperDeck Studio Pro:
Yet again features left incomplete I guess to get it out the door before NAB,
Prores 422HQ ONLY, no DNXHD option in setup, lacking control of settings from front panel, did figure out the source timecode with the remote button on, I'm also seeing inconsistencies on source audio levels to record, they seem to come in hot through SDI, no control or handles for levels.
Also, documentation is limited, at best.
Trying to get it functional to act as a backup for my current playback system for a huge upcoming show, may have to buy another of the more expensive product instead- tried and proven. I predict a return if it isn't up to it's specs within a month.

Use in a small post-production! After waiting nearly two month for delivery we have got a product with a software in its beta stadium. (DNxHD isnt working).

Comments about Blackmagic Design HyperDeck Studio Pro:
According to Black Magic many of the features listed are not actually available yet, but instead will be delivered in a update sometime in the future. Currently the XLR ports and DNxHD (and perhaps ProRes) apparently do not work. At this time it has less functionality than the standard hyperdeck.

Comments about Blackmagic Design HyperDeck Studio Pro:
I use the HyperDeck Studio Pro to both record video demonstrations to be given out to physicians as well as for recording live presentations. The high quality of the video recordings is essential in order to see the etiology of the disease presented. I have used no video recording equipment that is better at retaining the quality of the video in the rawest format. There is a great deal of connectivity with this device making it easy to choose the format which is proper in different A/V situations.
I wish that the device were more controllable from a computer.
I don't know why the device came without a power cord...
