Comments about Celestron Solar Observer 70mm TravelScope Telescope:

I got this telescope in preparation for viewing the 2017 solar eclipse. I needed something to which I could attach a camera for photography. Once you slide out the prism image erector which is used with eyepieces for visual observation, the back focal length is large enough to accommodate the necessary adapters for attaching a camera (I used a 1.25" to T-mount adapter, coupled with a T-mount to micro four thirds adapter). With this combination, it's easy to focus at infinity, or as close at 15 feet. Before buying this system, I had been looking for a solar filter, but prices were pretty high. Then I found this system, which included a filter, for not much more than the price of the filter alone. It was a no-brainer. The optics are excellent and movement of the focuser, though made partially of plastic parts, is smooth and steady. My first photo of the sun showed numerous sun spots, and a moon shot was very sharp, showing craters clearly. Used visually, the system makes an excellent terrestrial spotting scope. In addition to photographing the sun and the moon, I use it as a super telephoto lens (400mm) for wildlife photography. A comparable micro four thirds lens would cost many hundreds of dollars. Of course, you must focus and set exposure manually, but for the price, I can manage it. The included tripod is fine for visual use, but for photography, the added weight of the camera, and the imbalance it causes, is a little too much. The backpack which holds the optics and tripod also has room for accessories. It's well made and convenient for hiking to remote sites for observation. All in all, this was an excellent purchase. I'm very happy with it.

Comments about Celestron Solar Observer 70mm TravelScope Telescope:

I'm a life long fan of astronomy, but a newbe.I had a larger Meade astro scope, but it was always a hassle to set up and observe for a brief time. This great for a wonderful observation of our sky.The tripod is light and a little shaky. I can use my photo tripod for longer observations.
