The only downside to this drive is that it ONLY has Thunderbolt ports. Drives should be built with Firewire800 in addition to the dual Thunderbolt ports for maximum convenience of use.

I get it--it's not meant to be a field drive--but FW800 is still widely used in the pro-sumer market. I for one have countless other drives which all connect via Firewire800, it would be excellent to be able to daisy this new drive with the old drives without occupying my computer's other ports. I have much smaller, 1TB drives that have both types of ports, this 6TB should as well.

I still highly recommend this drive. Again, the size is perfect for HD audio and video, any bigger is too big, any smaller is too small, especially if you need to multi-task between many active projects.

Film, of course, is another story...

It's a fast drive, there's no question about that, but it's inability to switch from RAID 0 (striping) to other RAID formats is crippling in my opinion. Otherwise is a solid design and will likely hold up well in the field. I travel often for my film projects so it'll be a useful companion for quick editing on a Macbook Air. Only thing is that I'll need to bring along extra drives just for backup, so that's why I would've preferred the ability to switch to RAID 1 or 5 for redundancy protection.

So far so good. Running this on a new Mac Pro 12 core. It is used for storing pics, rendered videos, and graphics. The speed if fast with thunderbolt.
As you have read it is loud, but that is not a problem for me since all my hardware is in a different room from my mouse, keyboard, and monitor. So the noise does not bother me.

Comments about G-Technology 6TB G-RAID External Hard Drive Array with Thunderbolt:

I have been looking for a RAID solution to backup TBs of photo/video files. This GTECH is fast, quiet and easy to use. I like the fact it has a power button and can be turned off while still still attached to the computer. Having a second Thunderbolt connection to daisy chain has been fantastic for loading content from other drives and quick consolidation. The only downside is there is no hardware raid switch to move from 0 to 1. That said, this is very easy to do using Disk Utility for OSX.

This is just what the doctor ordered to accompany my new Mac Pro. It is not as fast as a solid state drive but more than adequate for editing HD or storing video files. I also have a bunch of RAW photos on there as well that are easily and quickly editable in Lightroom.

I use this drive for motion graphics. The high capacity allows me to store tons of HD content and the speed allows me to work directly off of the drive without any issues. It's also quiet, doesn't take up much space and doesn't judge me.

The one con is, like other Thunderbolt drives, it doesn't come with a Tbolt cable.

So far it's been reliable, easy to setup and fast speeds. Finally I can run Lightroom straight to an external drive. It's not noisy but it's not whisper quiet either. Very happy with my purchase.

This G-RAID, is my first one. So far, after 2 weeks of continous use the drive works as intended, the speeds of READ/Write are as espected (270 to 290 MB/sec).

Comments about G-Technology 6TB G-RAID External Hard Drive Array with Thunderbolt:

I'm a professional photographer who shoots high speed racing and sports in addition to to portraiture and people. I purchased this drive to move over 4TB of photos from multiple drives into one single unit. I looked at many other options for NAS/RAID setups. The appeal of this drive was both the cost ($750 + free thunderbolt cable at time of writing) and the speed of thunderbolt connectivity. At the time of writing, the cost of the 4TB was $600, so for $150 more you get 50% more storage AND a thunderbolt cable (Apple branded, too). A small concern or mine is having many TB of tiles on a single unit, however, I'll likely pick up a second one to run as a backup - and even at [$]for two, you're still coming in closer/cheaper than many other NAS options. Also, there is another reviewer that posted who doesn't even own this product. That's just stupid. His complaint is that this drive has a power button. Really? It's not life-ending that you have to turn this unit on manually... Size of the unit is fairly large - but it IS dual 3TB drives inside. Unit is quieter than I expected. Thunderbolt is incredibly fast of course. Light on front can be annoying if working in dimly lit rooms (ie: when I'm color correcting, etc)
